The hunters have returned and brought with them a great many beasts for the people of Port Argentium to sample. Simultaneously, the lumberjacks are beginning to flume logs down the river. A great many supplies have been ferried ashore from The Depravity, and The Refugee — Dawn Rider carrier that once enabled Isra’s signature cavalry to project force deep into the open ocean, has been beached on the shore and is in the process of being dismantled. Construction on basic wooden buildings is just about ready to go, but despite having spent the days since they’ve landed doing surveying work and drawing up plans, Lady Naoki hasn’t yet given orders on where to start construction. Rather, she has ordered the beasts butchered, and a feast prepared. She’s said that she intends to solicit opinions about how to go about building the settlement at the feast, which she figures to be as good a forum for soliciting suggestions as any other. The actual food on the table is, if you’re Naoki, the most disappointing excuse for a feast that has ever been served at her table. It’s not so much distinct dishes and courses as much as it is a bunch of pots filled with whatever food-type items the poor folks working the Mess Tent could scrounge up, interspersed with grilled beasts. It’s abundantly clear that none of her chefs made it, and the supply of spices is essentially spent. She hopes that none of this is poisonous, but also somehow doubts that could be the case. But… if you’re anybody else, it’s the nicest food you’ve seen in at least months. What it lacks in quality it makes up for in quantity, and not very much of it is fish. A smattering of alcohol is available, dug from some forgotten chamber in The Depravity’s hull and broken out for this festive occasion.

Naoki stands at the head of the middle table, the feast spread out before her. Many people have arrived, and she expects more will filter in as the feast progresses, as everyone is invited. She’s had a few of the more appetizing dishes placed within arm’s reach of her, and she’s brought a notebook and quill for taking down suggestions. She’s wearing one of her signature sweaterdresses, and seems much more vibrant and herself than the day they landed. Outside, the sun is just starting to meet the horizon, and she figures now is as good a time as any to start. She stands to address everyone, “Before we begin, allow me to thank you all for coming and being here! I have high hopes for us here; this land is promising, and I do not doubt that we will, in time, thrive here. But before we indulge ourselves, let us pause for a moment and remember everyone that isn’t here.” And Naoki pauses, shutting her eyes. A lot of people died. A lot of her people died. A lot of those important to her made it and sit around her now, but many more did not, and she doubts that many are as lucky as she in that department. Their existence here isn’t a happy thing, per se; it’s making the best of a bad situation. But there’s not much to be done about it save for solider on, so that’s what they’ll do. After a moment, Naoki nods. “Very good. Now,” she gestures, “We feast!”“Oh, when you come up to give your suggestions, have your thoughts in order beforehand and bear in mind there are many others looking to do the same. There’s enough of me to go around,” she adds, “But be courteous about it!”

Mint struggled their way through the crowd to better see the Lady-Captain-Madame toasting. Anxiously, they eyed for a free seat and found none. They had been lifting heavy… well, moderate boxes from one place to the next in an attempt to make themselves useful, so a stool would have been nice. Standing here, they leaned against a table to stop their legs from shaking. They’d better get an idea for a story, a song, anything soon or their back would say a loud goodbye. Mint had always been frail, and even now they weren’t sure if they were just in the way of the more capably crew. At least listening to their coworker’s stories had sparked some ideas they quickly jotted down in their notebook.
Mint was still trying to catch their breath when the Lady suggested a silence for the fallen. They felt like an absolute fucking donkey for heaving throughout the moment, sure everyone heard. Tuer-moi… Maybe it was better for them to not think about the past, they had done plenty of that the last few days, too much honestly. It was still a little too much to think about, to actualy think about that the people Mint loved the most were probably-. Non, pas encore.
Then it was time to feast! Finally some good-

Another shove, a multiplicity of shoves from all sides as the dam broke and the good folk of New Isra sought to sate their hunger.
“HEY! Can I just- Fils de pute!” Mint saw just one spot where they wouldn’t be trampled and exhausted all their leftover energy to reach that point. They felt like a hero in some age-old epic swimming out of an underworld river.
Out! They gasped for breath and chuckled a little, having gotten out of-
Oh. Mint realised where they ended up. Well, they thought, I suppose the next step after climbing out of the styx would be facing some the monarch.
There Mint was, standing in front of the impeccable Ex-Empress. And no, they hadn’t prepared anything for the occasion. Before their brain caught up with the body from the mayhem before, Mint found themselves saying “Oh, hi.” and then, inconceivably adding: “I didn’t have anything to say. You just looked lonely.” A smile appeared on their face, without any reason they could discern.

Naoki is in the middle of loading her plate with some variety of meat when someone is ejected from the rolling crowd to stand next to her. A thin little wisp of a thing, absolutely brimming with pluck, but otherwise hard to read.
“Hi,” Naoki shoots back, but the comment that she ‘looks lonely’ hits like a punch to the gut. Naoki visibly deflates, as though struck, and it’s only half-jokingly.
“Is it so obvious,” she laments, putting the back of her hand to her forehead, “Or, are you the type to introduce a problem that you oh-just-so-happen to be uniquely positioned to solve, hmmh?”
Fixing this newcomer with a look, Naoki gestures with her fork at a seat. “Sit,” she says, “And figure something to say. Or don’t — eat, and get some meat on your bones. I don’t doubt the others will be here soon.”

Besides the initial awkwardness that Mint could not avoid anymore, they glimpsed something besides her eyes. Yes, unmistakable! For just a split second she had been emotionally bare, sucker punched by a remark Mint had intended a joke. She was a touchy miss, this one.
In one fluid motion, she had already deflected the remark and was already flirting with Mint. They could only wonder at the genius at play here. But Mint would pretend not to notice. They weren't that easy.
"I'm not a solver of problems, exactly..." They paused for a moment to gape at the air, as if the words they wanted to use were swimming behind their conversation partner's head. "I do recognise them better than most people, I point them out... Not always at opportune times." And with you, dear Lady, I recognise a fair amount. No more than a slight jab and you're already trembling, c'est malhereux...
They tried to pass as if they hadn't noticed the veneer shifting, and moved on, smiling. "I have never had trouble thinking of what to say. Not with a femme or a homme. I'll partake and join you, if you're not terribly busy by then." Mint scored a drumstick from the buffet and took the seat where it was shown (ah there they were).
Biting into their meal, they started with the first thing that came to mind. "So what did you want to talk about, Miss Nakoi?"

Naoki hums in response, her mouth full. This is just as well, as she doesn’t have any particular response to what her newest acquaintance just said. It’s a strange thing to say, as though they’re alluding to an inside joke. A strange sort, for sure.
“It's La-dy Nao-ki,” she corrects, politely this first time. “If you’d like to introduce yourself…” She gestures with one palm up, that would be fine.
“But otherwise, part of the reason I’ve gathered everyone here is to gather input on how the colony should be constructed. I’m not about to design the settlement by committee,” she explains, “But to give everyone a chance to come up and share what they think is important, what features they think the place they’ll be living in should have — I think it will be helpful,” Naoki says, pouring herself some wine. “Help build a sense of community and all that.”
“So,” Naoki continues, gesturing at them with her wine glass, “Which features of your homeland do you think we ought — or ought not, to emulate here?”

Dawn Riversong
Established
Roleplay posts: 17
Appearance: A bit on the short side, with a thin, lanky build. Round amber eyes, round face, dark brown hair cut to rest about mid-way down her neck. Tends to wear simple and well-fitting clothes: knee-high leather boots, riding breeches, a simple blouse, and a hooded cloak, all in earthy browns and tans.
Equipment: An enchanted compass worn on a strap around her neck, a travel bag containing several tubes for storing rolls of parchment, bottles of ink, wooden quills, and a spyglass.
Skills and Abilities: Dawn has a natural knack for directions, as well as night vision and a fine sense of hearing. She is skilled in navigation and cartography.
Biography: Dawn was named after the time of day she was born, and grew up among her people in the forests to the West. She enjoyed exploring the woods, and as time went on came to tagging along with guides as they lead merchants and travelers around the region. Soon she came to being a guide herself, travelling north and south among the forest to see as much as she could. However, even the wide breadth of her homeland couldn't satiate her wanderlust, and she soon made the uncommon decision to depart and explore the lands to the East. As a parting gift her father bestowed upon her an enchanted compass, an old family heirloom none had seen a use for before then. She wandered nearby lands for years after that, drawing up maps of everywhere she went.

Dawn's mouth waters, and her stomach lets out another desperate growl. She slips her compass back beneath her shirt, scanning around the tent. "Huh, maybe we should ask around first? Make sure we don't accidentally make everyone angry?"

Looking to the newcomers, Naoki sizes them up and quirks an ear to listen to what they have to say. They seem sincere enough, and hungry besides.
“Ah-hah, someone who knows their manners.” Naoki nods approvingly. Too many people have been approaching her without introducing themselves as of late, and it’s refreshing.
“I am Lady Naoki, and this is Port Argentium, first of New Isra’s settlements here in the new world — welcome. We landed here only a few days ago, and this feast is thanks to the efforts of our intrepid hunters. I’m not one to deny food to the hungry... But I would prefer that you not partake of the feast and immediately skip town to go cavorting off across the land.” She looks particularly to the one introduced only as ‘The Bard.’ She knows their proclivity toward cavorting.
“I would ask — no, I would invite you both to join the settlement, throw your lot in with us of New Isra, and use your talents to benefit the group. It would then be your right to partake in the feast,” she explains, gesturing.

Dr. Indys Vulpin
Established
Roleplay posts: 43
Appearance: Few have seen Dr. Vulpin's face, which he generally keeps hidden behind a plain white mask. He alleges that it's for cleanliness purposes, but rumors abound that he uses it to hide a horribly scarred visage. His rather thin and lanky body is typically hidden by his voluminous dark red robes, colored strategically to hide the bloodstains from his work.
Skills and Abilities: Dr. Vulpin is known for his medical prowess: few can amputate a leg with such speed and enthusiasm. He's skilled with bonesaws, stitches, and scalpels and possesses a vast knowledge of ailments and medicines.
Biography: Nobody's quite sure where (or if) Dr. Vulpin actually studied medicine, but none can argue with the results. Most of his patients end up surviving, although they are frequently left with fewer limbs than they came in with. His medical skills have been invaluable on the long voyage, although his eccentricities and odd hobbies have made him rather unpopular among the crew and passengers.

Post by Dr. Indys Vulpin on Apr 25, 2021 18:47:19 GMT -5
Vulpin strode into the feasting tent, immaculately tailored cloak billowing behind him. As always, he wore his mask, but he'd made sure to scrub off all the splatters of blood. His clothes were freshly cleaned as well, washed by some of his subordinates until the various stains and unpleasantries were removed. Unfortunately, he'd been forced to attend without Ms. Starling, as she simply couldn't stand being among crowds. He could hardly blame her. These people, starved as they were for any manner of entertainment, would point and gossip over anything. Attending an event like this at his side would almost certainly make people whisper, and he didn't want to do any undue damage to her reputation. Still, the event promised fine alcohol from the anchored ship's dwindling holds, and so he would have been remiss in not making an appearance.
Sweeping through the entrance, he immediately spotted the captain standing among a small crowd of well-wishers and syncophants. Lady Naoki, he corrected himself, chuckling softly as he made his way towards the feast's host and sponsor. She'd stopped calling herself the captain, which led him to suspect that the worm-eaten hulk of the Depravity would never sail again. Picking up a glass of wine from a tray, he slid and twisted between feast-goers until he found himself standing before her. Once she turned away from her current conversation partner, he raised his glass to her before giving an exaggerated bow as though they were standing in a fine Isran ballroom.
"Lady Naoki," he said, his voice as smooth as oiled glass. "A pleasure to see you again tonight. It's quite the marvelous feast you've put on. The skill of your hunters is second only to the prowess of your cooks. An impressive display, to be sure. A more critical man than I might question the choice of some of the garnishes, but who can fathom the mind of an artist?"
He gestured vaguely with his glass, waving towards an unfortunate sailor who'd become quite ill after eating some questionable berries. Vulpin chuckled as the man was helped out of the tent to the infirmary and watched as attendants quickly removed the offending fruit from the table.
"Ah, science," he said. "The inexorable push towards making the unknown known. I see that your gatherers have taken the opportunity to perform a bit of science here themselves. The knowledge of what fruits bear toxins is invaluable, and for that I must applaud our poor experimental subject. In his suffering, he has kept pain at bay for us all. A brave soul, if a bit trusting. Tell me, ma'am. I've heard rumors abounding that a winery is to be constructed. Have these glorious tales any credence, or are they but the ramblings of wishful imagination?"

I lived as a poet within the capital of Gauldin. As you may imagine, the competition was fierce so I had to be able to peer deeper and deeper into mankind’s soul to make a decent coin. And with the world with such variety of lives as varied as Overworld… Well, you can imagine the task broke many. With this new world, just thinking of the poet’s task to capture every essence living in this land fills me with terror… And sublime excitement.

“That’s what I said. Was it not?” Surely not. Mint ignored the strange, buzzing sound in their head. “Call me Mint. I don’t doubt the name will taste sweet on your lips.”
“Straight to business, oui?” They think for a second, then reply: “Why reconstruct? Our children will not have the chance to see the walls of Travére. Or Isra. It won’t be more than songs and legends.” Mint smiled sadly. "There were a lot of places, alehouses for la boheme that I'd like to bring back, but those would not be the same."
“If I had my wish, my indulgence, I would like to have some flowers.” They nodded. “Yes. Gardens. Or if that proves difficult to do, then just leave some patch of woods untouched. So wandering minds and bodies have somewhere to go. I think there are… a lot of people who would like that.” Mint wasn’t sure who had mentioned this. They had a sense someone had.

They had a sense someone had. “Mint.” Naoki tries it immediately, and finds it… sweet enough, but quite the right pairing for this wine. Perhaps another. She’ll need more wine to say for sure, and gestures for someone to bring her some. “Gardens?” Naoki looks to Mint, then slowly nods. “Yes, that’s an important thing to bear in mind when planning the town,” she agrees. “There’s not been an ugly city with flowers at its center.” “Hum. Could do it like this, look…” Wetting her quill, Naoki begins to sketch in her notebook. “The plaza goes here, with the government building on this side so the other side faces the water. The on the opposite side of the plaza, we put the gardens. The gardens stretch like... this, and then down on this end, my house. That way, in the morning I’ll walk through the gardens and then the plaza to get to work.” Naoki considers for half a moment before shaking her head, “Wait, no, during the winter, when the flowers don’t bloom, that walk would be awful. Better, perhaps, merely to live atop the government building and be bracketed by the sea on one side and the flowers on the other. Hmph.” “But we’ll have flowers,” she assures Mint. ‘But what else? Would you see some industry or public work be completed before others, such that you might ply your trade?”
