Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Jun threw her hand up above her head, revealing the two glowing stones attached to some plant vines. Then the night filled with sparkling light. The stones came alive and shrieked. They shot away from Jun in opposite directions, like little comets. But they stopped about two meters away from her body and began to orbit her, spraying fire and embers at anything that got too close, and striking anything careless with the force of a sledge hammer. They spun so quickly as to draw a golden circle of light around Jun's body.
Jun backed off from the stinging tentacle and fluidly stepped back, warding off attackers by threatening to slam them with her fireworks display.
Although she controlled them with the vines, her wrists seemed to be under very little strain.
"From now on, if you guys get hurt it's your own fault!" She decided that was her final warning.

Appearance: The look like a light Portuguese Man O War with a brain. It's brain cavity is clear allowing you to see inside it's body. The tentacles are long and lets them move around quickly and attack themselves to others of their species.
Equipment: They sometimes carry living weapons made out of other Synchs
Skills and Abilities: Using other members of their species they are able to shape their bodies to look like other species. Their mimicry is imperfect and normal intelligent species are able to tell the difference. This process involves synchphons analyzing their target and attaching themselves to each other to shape themselves. This process takes them about half an hour.
Magic helps this process and allows them to change colors to match the species or environment.
They can mimic abilities of other species when they shape shift. The abilities they copy are not as strong as the thing they copy, depending on the power level. They first transform into the user and see the ability in action for them to be able to replicate it.
Given that they are are colonial organisms their bodies can be cut into prices multiple times and are able to regenerate in a couple of days. If their brain is damaged however they die, and the body returns to their colony. Some parts are able to photosynthesize.
Usually they live underwater but are fast climbers and tunnelers because of their hardiness.

The synchs backed off and moved behind their tall friend. He looked human, with dark skin, bald cut and normal looking clothes. Even their facial structure was uncannily human.
But upon closer inspection, they where clearly an imitation. The neck was a mess of tentacles attaching themselves to the torso, they had no joints where there where supposed to be joints.
And their movements where more fluid and flexible than what any human should be able to do. "He" mimicked her voice." Your fault, it's your fault." Sounding almost exactly like her, but with a quiet squelching sound.
Reno joined them, hopping on their friend's back and leaping to Jun, stinging nerve endings extended.
The humanoid synch followed suit, dashing to her with a branch in hand.

Jun felt a rush of emotion seeing them work as a team, and using mimicry not only as a lure, but straight up in battle. This is how you survived. This is how you bring down prey larger than you: teamwork and wits. The fact that she was the prey did sort of put a damper on the spectacle. However, she was exactly the sort of person to get fired up by a worthy opponent.
"Bring it!" She cried as her fiery thralls unexpectedly split apart and flew off in random directions.
In the brief interlude of sudden darkness, Jun drew her longs sword. Then, with her body suddenly illuminated by light, she lunged forward and slashed at the extended tentacles. But the light didn't come from her own body; it came from behind Reno and his tall friend.
The stones had ricocheted off some nearby rocks and circled back towards the synchs. They then spun in between then and threw sparks like deadly pinwheels. They also shrieked wildly, filling the air with chaos. Jun instantly conceived a strategy to disrupt her enemy's formation and use the distraction to counterattack. And her blade work was swift; she could transition quickly between slashes and guards.
The sparks were hot enough to burn and set fire to branches. The synchs might notice that the stones had an organic shape to them. The flames were coming from a horizontal slit for a mouth inset in a calcified gem-like structure. They were barnacles. Very angry ones.

The humanoid jelly was blasted away. The other jellies scattered, being spooked by the lights. They where a mess of emotion, but that wasn't anything new.
A mass of flesh dragged itself to the battle field slowly. It had no mind or will, being the brainless versions of the species.
Reno chirped for help, the obnoxious noise startling some nearby animals. Dragging their friend away from the overwhelming attacks they ordered a command to everyone.
Using it's long arm, they wrapped themselves onto their friend's 'spine' and glared cutely at Jun.
Suddenly a long sharp piece of coral was thrown at the two, piercing the ground. It was just barely longer than the broadsword Jun had.
"Bring it!" The humanoid said, mimicking the sound of someone familiar to Jun. They opened their hand and threw something. A single barnacle, just like what Jun threw, was flung at her.
Instead of ricocheting it circled aimlessly around Jun with blinding speed, only to fling itself away and explode behind her.
Since the two synchs where far enough way, they tested this ability a few times. They and brandished their "sword", then darted forward attacking in a similar attack pattern to what Jun tried, except their moves where just a bit sloppy.

Having successfully disrupted their first attack, Jun took a second to breath and walk back a few steps towards her camp. She thought of running back to warn them that there was a rival, er, expedition and that they ought to stay away from this side of the beach. She bent down and picked up Barney and Knuckles, who were now inert and a bit exhausted, but none worse for the way.
"Ouch, hot hot hot." She muttered to herself as she put the little fire aficionados away into her pocket.
But then she heard something ponderous and squelchy drag itself towards the battlefield. She turned around.
She breathed a deep, hissing breath through her nostrils. She reached hesitantly behind her back to her travel pack, fingers caressing its base. But then she changed her mind.
...N- no. I won't use the coconut. I will not use the coconut. I will not use the coconut.
Instead, a second and third seed dropped from her sleeve into her palm. One split apart and once again grew vines. The vines stretched out and attached themselves to her long sword, forming it into a spear. The second seed seemed to sacrifice itself instead, crumbling into ash, as blue bolts sparked out of it and spread throughout Jun's gambeson.
To her surprise, the new creature seemed to be some sort of support. It tossed a "sword" to the jellyfish stack. She was even more surprised when the humanoid threw a whizzing barnacle at her. She was going to try to knock it back with her new spear, but then it exploded behind her. She held herself tight and flinched ("Ack!"), but the explosion caused little damage thanks the effects of her second seed, which she'd keep hidden for now. She hissed again.
What magic allowed them to copy her abilities so quickly? Whatever these things are, they must have been terrifyingly strong back in their old world.
"Kind of like I was... I guess." She whispered to herself.
The creature charged forward, but Jun saw immediately that she had the upper hand. Not wanting to take it for granted however, she backed up and focused on jabbing and parrying, occasionally taking some pot shots at Reno and his little lantern.

The other synchs seemed to cheer from behind them. They chirped, almost like a war chant. Some of the synchs signed to Reno, so Jun would not hear them and react. Reno nodded and made what looked like a sneer.
Reno used the little light on the tip of one of their 3 legs they shook it, forcing it to flash a bright light. They where trying to blind her and find an opening. The light could not be held for too long, so instead they flashed it, on and off, irritating her eyes eyes.
Suddenly the humanoid threw another barnacle, but not at her. Instead they threw it at their friends, who wacked it back to their direction. The barnacle exploded right on Jun's back, finally giving them a good hit on her.
They threw a few more, which the synchs reacted to by waking them back at their direction.

Seriously?!
Flashing the very target she was aiming at was a perfect counter, especially in the dark. It disoriented her to the point where she had to stop taking potshots at the lantern and instead just focus on the battle.
She got ready to knock back the second barnacle, but then the creature threw it at the... audience?! "Oh y'all really have an audience now-"
BANG!
Not expecting audience participation, she took yet another hit from an explosion. She flinched, raising her arm up to her face, her spear crossing her body defensively. She leered at the creatures over her arm.
When the smoke cleared, the synchs would see that a large section of her coat was covered in shimmering scales. The blast had blown a crater in her coat, leaving behind ordinary cloth. But then little plant stems shot out of the threads of the vacant area, and at each tip of the stem quickly grew a leaf. The leaves then turned solid and glistened, flattening over the coat. They were frozen solid.
I... will not... use the coconut. But the temptation was killing her. Her regenerating lamellar wasn't going to last forever. And while she did have a decent supply of mana seeds, they weren't going to last forever either. She needed to end this fight soon.
Jun leaped back to try to dodge another barnacle. And another. Once she had the timing down, she'd try to knock one of the barnacles away from herself and towards the humanoid using her spear. It was her turn to copy them.

The humanoid tried to throw another explosive barnacle. But as they did this, Reno realized something. The humanoid was getting a tired. The humanoid backed off as soon as they threw that last barnacle and hid behind a rock.
Now it was Reno's turn of attacking. They took the sword of the humanoid and leaped to their adversary. The nerve endings attached themselves to the broadsword of the sharpened bone.
They could not copy anything as they where not transformed, but they decided to see if they can get their enemy to reveal more powers. They called for help and some more jelly fish arrived. They came with bone shields attached to tentacles similar to the one Reno had.
Reno hoped they and their cohorts would be a match, but their opponent proven to be much stronger than what they have been dealing with.
Then the barnacle was sent flying towards Jun.

The exhausted humanoid's retreat told her what she needed to know. The creatures were tenacious, but they were not invincible. Their stamina was limited, and they required preparation time, just like most wielders of mana in the isles, including Jun herself.
"It's over!" She slammed the wooden shaft of her spear into the barnacle to knock it back towards the approaching jellyfish army.
BANG!
Unfortunately she hit it a little too hard.
The blast splintered her spear shaft and sent the shards flying everywhere. Some of them stuck frozen to was left of her ablative armor. Many of them caked her hair like sprinkles on a confection. She recoiled back. And when she recovered, she stood there for a moment, frozen with embarrassment.
She spit out a wooden splinter and tried to shake the tinnitus out of her ears. She blinked at Reno with a deadpan expression.
"Y-you guys probably shouldn't copy blowing yourselves up."
Jun took a couple more seeds, and dropped them listlessly onto the ground. Like one of the seeds from before, they crumbled into ash and released their power, this time into the sand. "You know what? I'll take care of that for you."
And suddenly there were small explosions everywhere.
They weren't particularly powerful, but Jun wasn't aiming to kill the synchs. She just decided that she had had quite enough of jellyfish monsters and that it was time to leave. Covering her escape was what seemed like the beach itself. The landscape boiled and writhed with blasts, as if the earth had chosen a side in their battle. Thanks to Jun's magic, this was partially true.
See, although Jun used life forms as weapons, she did her best to treat them with respect, and not sacrificial pawns unless it was absolutely necessary. Barney and Knuckles, for instance, were well-taken care of when they weren't being used as fireworks. But the mimics had missed that little nuance in the application of their knock-off magic, ruthlessly sacrificing barnacles to gain the advantage in battle. So it wasn't hard to convince the nearby denizens of the beach to avenge their comrades, at least for a little while.
Each little earth blast was being projected by a single angry sand flea. But there was an army of them.

The synchs cried and chirped. They ran off, each filled with spite and fear.
Reno however ordered the humanoid to do one last attack. Despite being tired, the humanoid sent one last explosive barnacle at the sand.
As soon as the sand exploded they ran off towards the human camp, directing Jun's attention towards them. The two synchs called for some of their kin to follow them. Some followed, but most made their way to water, having another plan of invasion.

The blast scared away the sand fleas just beneath it, creating a calm crater amidst the broiling beach.
Jun sprinted away until she was clear of the battlefield. She looked back and saw that most of the synchs were retreating as well. Once she was far enough, the sand fleas would calm down and go back to being normal crustaceans.
"Until we meet again, you adorable bastards." She chuckled, a bit out of breath. Even though they were her enemies, she still marveled at and respected the creatures. She looked forward to reporting back to Tana and Avalux that an entire magic jellyfish civilization had survived their floodwaters. She wondered if there was still some way to make peace with them.
But as the evening grew cold, grim reality set in. It wasn't like the old days where she could just walk up to a dragon and demand to be friends with it. Dangers needed to be taken more seriously. She needed to go warn her friends.
Then, a bouncing glowing light and some chirping caught her attention. A group of them had broken off and were now heading towards the Usquean camp.
"Wait. Wait a second!" Jun ran after them. To her it looked like their leader was refusing to give up. Were they planning to fight? Were they confused? Was it some kind of suicide charge? Or was she being lured away?
"Wait! Stop! I give up! I'm retreating! Don't go near the human camp!"
If Reno and the synchs didn't listen to her and went too far, they'd hear a loud whiz, and several arrows would land in front of them. Jun wasn't just trying to stop them. She was trying to save them. Even humans without magic were far from defenseless, especially in large groups.

Age: 20

The synchs where protected by their armor. Hiding in shadows they mimicked the voice of Jun."Stop! Stop!" They cried, hiding their face from the humans and mimicking her voice. However anyone paying attention could tell that it was not Jun.
The arrows did not stop, forcing the synchs to flee. Reno was not happy. They decided to head for the shore as some of their synch friends called for them to escape.
The humanoid was getting tired. They where not built for running and dropped to the ground, crawling on the sand quickly.
The synchs had lost another battle, and where not getting anywhere in their conquest. Once again a stronger species defeated them.
Reno was not happy. As they and the humanoid dived into the water he plotted on how to fight this other species. Their friends called for Reno to flee, but they where already tired of loosing.
Reno chirped and signed, using his light and arms. One last plan. Ordering some synchs across the shore and giving 3 of them an arm, they decided to enter the town more subtly. Body parts where dragged under the water by the group, ready to be fused and used.
They tried to find an unguarded spot to hide and spy on the new species they encountered.

Assuming their plan took a while to execute, Jun and her fellow humans were resting around one of the campfires. There were a couple dozen humans encamped in tents around several fires, and most of them were currently eating fish and trading notes. Some long canoes rested ashore close by.
"We'll set up more fires and post night watchers. We'll move the camp further away in the morning."
"Jellyfish people? Now I've heard everything."
"I swear to the forest Jun if you try making friends with them-"
"Trust me, she tried."
"Hey, they were kinda cute!"
"You suspect they wanted to eat you."
"... Well, my statement remains valid."
It appeared Jun wasn't the expedition leader. There was a taller woman armed with a well-crafted spear who seemed to command the others. There were also many large men with axes and longbows, and a few women with crossbows and daggers. They were all ruggedly dressed and seemed ill-adapted for the desert life, meaning they were new to the region.
No one would notice the synchs as long as they remained quiet and in the dark.
Jun and the others would continue to talk and banter until it got very dark. Jun would be among the first to go to sleep, but there would always be a few people on night watch duty. If they waited a few hours, they'd see Jun come out of her tent for a later night watch.

The synchs planned their attack. The humanoid decided to blend in, attempting to copy their way of movement. They covered their face with a living scarf and hat.. It looked at some fish that where pulled out and took one, eating it raw and whole.
They walked with a spear in hand, trying to pretend like they where guarding. The other warriors however where watching, hidden under the people's homes. They took some things from their camps, trying to make out what they where but ultimately throwing them away.
Reno watched the fire they had made. Deciding they didn't like it they put it out while the humans looked away. They replaced it with a fake fire, a pulsating jelly that attempting to copy the movement of a flame.
The humanoid synch joined the other humans, but spoke not a single word. Just awkwardly standing next to them. They looked into the direction of some rocks, knowing their friends were watching over them in disguise. They looked at the humans nervously, really not licking having to be near them.

The humanoid's plan might have worked early on. But as night watch duty shifted, they would run into a problem. A young, homely, nearsighted researcher with primitive bifocals was up next. The lenses did give her some long range sight, but they also overcompensated, giving her awful tunnel vision. She would easily miss details in her periphery.
"Hey, I'm here to relieve you."
If the humanoid didn't know what that meant, the woman would smile, revealing a bit of a gap tooth. "You wanna hang out a little longer. I gotcha. Desert night's kinda nice, isn't it?"
She'd stand next to the humanoid for a moment, looking out towards the horizon.
"It's hard to find time alone with people, you know? Everyone's so busy surviving and stuff. Nobody's been in the mood to be, I don't know, closer. More tight-knit. Intimate, you know what I'm saying?"
Presumably the humanoid would say nothing, to which the woman would reply, "Ah, strong silent type. I can respect that. My father was a strong silent type. I remember when I was a little girl and we used to go camping together..."
While the night watch girl began sharing literally her entire life story to the humanoid synch, a dull-witted lumberjack came crawling out of his tent. He had a sausage on a long stick.
"Your night watch isn't until before dusk. Mine's in just a few hours. Go back to sleep." The annoyed voice that came from within the same tent was Jun's . It seemed like they were sharing.
"Agh, I can't help it. I get hungry in the middle of the night."
"I swear you're going to be only man I know in this apocalyptic wasteland with an obesity problem."
"Stop shaming me, woman!"
"I'll shame yer her ger shmer..." The sorceress grumbled. The rustling of cloth suggested that she was struggling to go back to sleep.
The oversized dullard meanwhile began poking his sausage on a stick into Reno, waiting for it to start sizzling.
