Asa looked at all the food in front of him, he seemed very excited to taste everything. He began eating.
"Ok," he said after tasting the beef, next was the dried fruits, his reaction was nodding, the fish made him stop for a second and lift an eyebrow. The worst reactions came from some of the eggs.
The next few seconds were spent by organizing the food left to right, with the insect pupae being the most left and the eggs on the most right.
"The pupae was really good, I had insects and insect based food before but in they were rations and we're repulsive, this is good."
He pointed to the meats "There's not much to say about these, they're well made and taste like they should, they don't get even close to the slop I've been forced to eat in between battles, very good."
Next was the fruits "I the fruit is well dried, maybe let them dry less, they're beginning to lose the flavor. Far from army food, good."
"Now the fish." Asa took a few seconds to think about this one "Not horrible, not good either, it's edible but it tastes a little weird. This is good army food."
The last one was the eggs "This is... I've had worst ? Maybe. It tastes like my cooking. This is what we get after 6 months of a war that was expected to end two months ago."
Asa looked at Jun, thinking that the last comment might've went too far "I wasn't trying to be rude with the last one but some of these eggs are bad, not all of them though." Asa pointed at the eggs that were actually good so Jun would know which was good.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Jun took careful notes every step of the way. She was pleasantly surprised that Asadrack had no issue with the bug pupae.
"Well, worst case, the fruit makes good necklace material."
Perhaps Asa thought he was being rude because, not for the first time, Jun started to feel guilty about the differences in the worlds they grew up in. Jun had lived a dangerous life, sure. But one thing she felt she was never lacking in was decent food. Most battles in her world were abrupt and fiery, so there was little reason for soldiers to carry rations designed to last for weeks on dusty roads. She also came from a culture that could grow delicacies out of rocks and caves with magic.
"No, you're not being rude." She forced a smile. "To be honest, I'm glad most of them passed your test. I'll share the good recipes with as many people as I can."
The Azarana cult would probably be a good place to start, she thought.
"You know, in my world, people fought wars too. But, they tended to be short, violent, and explosive. Usually the winner was determined by whoever had the most resources, arch mages, and dragons. Being forced out in the field for weeks or months at a time, it must have been really rough, huh?"

"In Cortal, magic was mostly used for small tasks, healing, cooking, cleaning, no spell were specially deadly, dragons died long ago and any summons were small and cute, we threw dead bodies with deadly sickness over walls, we stopped water and food from coming into cities so they would starve or surrender, we dug spike traps and let them fall in." Asa's breathing was slowly becoming more frantic "We couldn't pull them out of those pits, they screamed, sometimes for hours until they bled out, wining a battle meant nothing if your men were sick, starving and thirsty."
Asa could almost hear the sounds of swords clanking, the smell of blood was creeping into his nostrils and his eyes were wide open "the counties in Cortal were big, sometimes it took us days to go from one target to another, sometimes we spent weeks just positing around a town, than months of weakening them and finally hours slaughtering them."
Asa avoid looking at Jun, the guilt on his face was very obvious "Jun, I don't deserve any of this," he lift his stump "except for this. There was this time, we spent three months, maybe four surrounding a city, they never got reinforcement and things were too quiet, so, we decided to invade, everyone died of hunger and disease, the church was filled with children," Asa began crying "we were told that the city was being used by the military but there were only civilians inside Jun, civilians, we changed sides aftet the atrocities we committed unknowingly, our group was known for denying any civilian targets so they lied to us," there were anger building up on Asa's voice"We hanged their king in the middle of the capital one year after that."
Asa was becoming emotional and couldn't stop crying, the memories flooding into his head were too painful, "I'm okay, life gave me a second chance and even if I feel like I don't deserve it doesn't change the fact that I'll do my best to be the person who deserves Tana's love and your friendship."

"Oh forests come here." Jun put her arm around Asadrack yet again. They had really gotten in the habit of hugging each other lately.
Duen would have a fit if he saw this much maudlin' in a single square meter.
"It's over. All that is over now."
Though, being honest with herself, it was going to take years before Jun and Asadrack were anything resembling normal. But this hug was one of many baby steps in the right direction.
This time Jun hesitated. She really didn't want to keep trading anecdotes, partially out of respect for what Asadrack had been through. And honestly, Jun had in fact never harmed children. She had been lucky enough, privileged really, to have mostly been on the side of good. She had witnessed many atrocities. She'd even seen children die. But to have been the cause of such death...
It wasn't fair. How could people be so cruel? Not Asadrack, but the people who had sent him into battle.
She stayed silent for a bit, just focused on comforting Asadrack, and then finally she said, "War makes bastards of us all."
She decided he didn't need to hear about the exploding fruit vines that brought down a city wall, or the zombie invasion which spelled the death of a nation, or the orc hoards, or the...
Seriously, how the fuck am I still alive?
She gently patted Asadrack on the back. "You know, I told Queen Tana it would be up to her to preserve the knowledge of healing to safeguard her people. As king, I think it'll be up to you to make sure that the Usqueans never follow the path of unjust war. You can never erase the past, but you can always create a better future. Now... alright, I confess. I haven't gone through what you've gone through, but, I have seen a lot of nations go to war. And, I think it would be helpful to think about why a person, or a nation, might go down that path. Greed, corruption, zealotry, revenge, pride, self-preservation... it's hard to avoid being bad sometimes."
Jun hesitated a bit longer before adding, "I used to be able to use blood and demon magic."

Asadrack tried recomposing himself, he had a serious look on his face, probably the most serious Jun would ever see him "I will die before letting the Usqueans go to war for unjustified reasons, that doesn't mean I won't fight by their side if I have to."
"Jun, please don't tell anyone... Wait, demon magic ?" He lifted one eyebrow "Demon. Magic ? That sounds impressive... And awesome." Asa looked a little confused for a second, like he was trying to remember something "I completely forgot what I was about to say." He thought for a second "Oh yeah, Jun, please don't tell anyone what I told you today, I'm trying to escape that past, not forget, escape, I got the chance for a fresh start and I won't let it go." A cheeky smile grew on Asa's face as he lifted his stump "I might need a hand with that."

Jun chuckled at the awful joke. "Both my hands. Or, have the carpenters make you a hook as well." She made a hook gesture with her finger. "Don't worry, I won't tell a soul." She added more seriously.
"I did a lot of experimenting with magic, some of it was dangerous. Most of what I'm capable of now is elementalism and life magic. But when I was a teenager, I learned how to summon demons, how to power up attacks with blood, how to fight with shadows and psionic abilities. The only thing I stayed away from was necromancy because it was forbidden in my tribe. Which was fine. Way overrated in my opinion." She smirked.
"I discovered not all demons are evil, though a lot of them are. I discovered dark magic isn't inherently evil. But, the truth is, there were times growing up where I was obsessed with violence."
Jun/s face grew a bit melancholy. "And, even though it made me stronger, sometimes I kind of regret it. I was so busy fighting all the time. I never took up painting or art. I never really learned how to dance or sing. I could have been a pretty good chef." She sighed. "Not many romantic partners either, besides a grandiloquent mercenary... and that one night stand I had with a bird man." (She said the last statement in a low voice.)
Then she slapped her knees. "But that's all in the past. What matters is who we choose to be now."
Jun gritted her teeth slightly. "But I'm still going to do a lot of fighting because I can't freaking help myself. Gerrrnerrrrrrrerrr." She muttered exaggeratedly and then started chuckling again.

Asadrack's mind fixated in one thing at first, a one night stand with a bird person, he was very curious on how the bird person to human relations worked but, deciding to mind his own business, he did not to ask about it.
"I learned painting because of necessity, usually, where I come from, people who have paintings of themselves were Rich folk, as a teenager, I painted portraits for them and after that, knowing they had some money to spend, me and my peers pickpocket them."
Asa looked up at the tree tops, he had a smile as he remembered some of the people of his life, the friends he made through hardship, he thought about his journey in life so far and where it brought him "I regret a lot of things Jun, still, I'd do it all again because that brought me here, a place where I feel like I belong, where happiness seems possible, here, I have a family, I don't need to kill for a living, here, I can be myself."

I still hope my family's alright. Jun thought.
She squeezed her fingers together insecurely. Asadrack had brought up something she had wanted to talk about with someone but wasn't sure who. It felt almost silly asking someone younger than her about family... But after everything he'd been through and confided to her with, she decided she trusted and respected him enough to go for it. Sometimes age really was just a number.
"You know, it's kinda funny. I'm at a point in my life where, for the first time, being a parent seems like a... a real possibility. We've already talked about this but, one of my biggest fears in the past was becoming a mother and a wife and then leaving family behind because I decided to go fight an... evil vampire army or something. And..."
She winced. No anxiety attack! Bad!
"... This might sound silly but, someday I might need yours and Tana's advice on taking care of... babies. Maybe! Possibly! I- I mean it could happen!" She chuckled nervously. "It might not! Me and Avalux haven't really even talked about it it's... almost silly to even think about and I mean there's still a lot of work to do and... it's not like I need to have children. The birth part is not fun. I can attest to that. Oh Avalux acquitted himself very well though. I would love having him by my side, if I decide that's what I want and if he decides... you know he's not exactly a spring hen but he's very wise and intelligent and competent... he's not a grandpa either don't get me wrong hahaha..."
She was rubbing and twisting her fingers in knots so hard she looked like she might break one of them.
"How does it feel being the father of a newborn ?"

Asa thought for a second before talking, he had a smile on his face and love in his eyes, it was clear he was thinking about his daughter. "The first time I laid my eyes on Mara, I took everything in as not to forget, her eyes, her tiny hands and feet, her big baby head," Asa chuckled.
"The emotions I felt were love, happiness and fear. I loved her immediately and her presence was enough to bring me to tears of happiness and feared for what will come next." He looked at Jun with a smile"Nothing can compare to seeing your child for the first time, nothing."
Asa stretched, his back cracked. He looked up and thought for a little more, "You want a child ? Well, if you think he's the right one, go for it, you'll definitely be a great mother."
