As Duna walked back from the kitchen, Flora stood, cracking her knuckles. “Alright then Duna, let’s see what might be the problem. May I?”
Upon the spreading of her arms inviting inspection, Flora quickly took to looking over her, attempting first to see if there were any external signs of injury. It took only a short while for her to find what appeared to be bruising on the back of Duna’s head. “Hm…” She tutted, quickly retreating and opening up the book she’d brought, looking through the section within for anything that may help her form a conclusion.
After a few moments, she snapped her fingers, looking up. “I believe I have a theory on what happened, and why her communication was stunted. It appears her specific subspecies is capable of telepathy through a special lobe present in their brains, and it’s used as their primary method of communication. My guess, especially by that lump on her head, is that it’s been damaged by blunt force trauma.” She turned to Duna. “I’m afraid there isn’t really much I can do, though, as sad as it is. You will heal, and eventually you might be able to use it again, but judging by the external signs you took a very bad hit. It’s likely your communication through telepathy will never be as clear as it once was. My recommendation? Rest, and staying away from activities that may cause you to hit your head again. Too much of that and it won’t heal even that much, and it may give you a proper concussion as well.” She paused for a moment, looking down. “And perhaps you should take a few lessons on sign language. It should ease communication in the interim, and if the damage is worse than I can tell here…” She trailed off, turning to close the book. “I wish I could help more.”

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Jun opened her mouth to say something. But then she stopped herself. She gave Flora an awkward glance.
Jun could attempt to heal the injury with magic. But, for the very first time in her life, it seemed like the wrong thing to do. First of all, healing a brain injury was much riskier and more complex than healing a different part of the body. Secondly, Duna was an entirely different species of humanoid, which exacerbated the former problem significantly. And finally, Duna hated magic. It would be morally wrong to inflict treatment on someone who didn't want it.
It wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. She and Avalux could do some separate research. But they were already fairly taxed dealing with people who not only needed their help, but wanted it.
And so, Jun decided to swallow her pride.
"Queen Tana is a mute. She can't speak either. So we have some gestures we've learned to recognize."
She held her hand over her chest, fingers stretched and thumb sticking out, and made a circular motion with it. "Please."
She tapped her hand to her chin and gently moved it forward, a bit like blowing a kiss. "Thank you."
She made a first with her thumbs up and tapped it forcefully onto her opposite palm. "Help."
Perhaps this was a fitting moral lesson; in the absence of a hero, a good friend will suffice. I should write that down somewhere.

Appearance: She has bright blue reptilian skin, and fuchsia hair. Her ears are long and pointy, and she has a long tail, helping with balance. She is warm blooded however.
Equipment: None, besides her clothes.
Skills and Abilities: She used to be able to communicate psychically, and thus has no idea how to speak vocally, or use language. She has the ability to shift into a raptor-type dinosaur at will.
Biography: A Dinurian, Duna is A somewhat shy girl. She was always something of a recluse, communicating with her mind and staying away from the noisy thoughts of other people. However, the mist has stripped her of this ability. Now mute and bereft of the voices that accompanied her all her life, she must learn to survive in this new reality.

Duna wasn't entirely sure what Jun was getting at, seeing as these hand motions just seem... arbitrary, to her, but she decided to play along. At worst, Jun would just repeat the motions. She wouldn't curse her, right? Can never be sure with magic, especially with Magicians. Still, it would be best to humor Jun for now. At least the deer girl seemed nice enough to intervene if something goes wrong.
She brought her hand to her chin, then brought it forward. "Tank Yu"

“It seems like Jun can at least teach you some basics then, when it comes to the sign language.” Flora noted, setting the book aside and turning back to the others in the room. “Unfortunately I’ve been quite busy and haven’t yet had a chance to learn it, but it’s a useful skill to have. A good way to speak when words can’t be used.”
She looked between the two. She felt bad, having only been able to tell them bad news and a few maybe-remedies, but working on the mind was dangerous, especially without proper tools or knowledge, both of which she lacked enough of. So there wasn’t really much else she could do. “Again, I’m sorry I couldn’t do more. But, if you need anything else, you can find me in my office up top. Otherwise if you need help there are those others working on that place down here. I think they’ve decided to call us the ‘Azarana.’ They’ll always be happy to help out as well.”
She took one last look around. “Is there anything else you need before I take my leave then?”

Jun smiled. Thank you was perhaps the most valuable word one could learn in any language.
Well, old world naivete aside it was probably still in the top 10.
"I think we're alright for now. Thank you so much, Flora. If you get the chance, tell your fellows that Azarana is a lovely name for a mysterious benevolent faction."
She turned to Duna. "I know some of what I am makes you uncomfortable, and that, well, some of that is here in this home. But regardless, if you need a place to stay and sleep for now you're welcome here. But if you'd rather find a place of your own that's fine too. I would ask that you please stay near the village as much as possible. The wilds of this world can be very dangerous. Best to travel in groups if you must. You might find other people washing ashore as well. I... I guess I'd appreciate it if you tried to help others whenever possible. But the truth is, survivors of the flood can come from any number of strange places, and some of those people might be dangerous. So, always be on your guard, even when you have good intentions."
Jun quickly realized she was probably talking to herself and Flora more than Duna. If she wasn't already working with Avalux, Tana, and a bunch of side projects, she would seriously consider signing up with the Azarana as a permanent bodyguard.
"... You probably already know that though."
If Duna was willing, Jun would continue to share with and drill her on some more sign language. It wouldn't be enough to write a screen play, but she would be able to make basic requests from the nearby guards and hunters and maybe ask about the weather.
"... You might wanna carry a wax tablet and a wooden stylus on you, just as a back up. Hehe."

She'd learned that much from her family. Admittedly she wasn't all that experienced with people but she wasn't stupid!
Duna wasn't quite sure what she meant by a wax tablet, but she figured she would explain.
