Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Although most of the village of Ma'ar is planned to be above ground in the trees, Jun decided to place her more permanent dwelling beneath it. Using basic tools and what little earth magic she had, she was able to carve out steps, shelves, and trenches of dirt to create the foundation of a home, then erect walls and basic furniture with sticks and mud. Animals that hang around the home are a bit friendlier and more intelligent than average. This is a side effect of the various magical experiments Jun performs. Mosquitoes and snakes are a little less likely to bite, rodents a bit less likely to steal food, and large predators a bit less likely to attack... a little.(Don't push your luck by petting things you wouldn't normally pet.) The interior has earthen jugs filled with water, dried foods, and foods preserved in ash. There is a very small fire place with a slot over it for ventilation, which can be covered in times of rain. Jun sleeps in a willow bed with fur blankets and straw bedding and pillows. She also has earthen shelves filled with research notes, rune designs and rough drafts, mana-laced seeds, and other various take-home bits of her time spent on Avalux's research ship.

Jun led Duna to the Village of Ma'ar, which was nearing completion. Most of it consisted of a large network of communal tree houses connected by plank bridges. There were still some homes on the ground, however, including Jun's earthen one. Some of the builders seemed to have planned something like a fortress with a moat?
The Usqueans are a relatively peaceful people who subsist mostly off of hunting and fishing. They generally try to live in harmony with the land, and worship the forest and forest spirits. Among the Usqueans however are burly lumberjacks and hunters who survived the floodwaters and decided to join the Usqueans.
As they passed by, Jun would of course vouch for Duna; lizard women were not a common sight here.
"Make yourself right at home." Jun said as she brought the lizard girl to her front doorstep; she would still be wearing Jun's gambeson if she accepted. Jun went to her shelf to grab a chalkboard and some chalk, and carefully handed it to Duna.
"What kind of clothing would you like?"

Duna was a bit confused by the situation. She'd never seen a chalkboard before. However, she's understood the question and simply shruged. She'd never worn much in the way of clothes, and didn't really have any preferences herself.

Jun looked to the side, squinting. Her lips twisted in thought.
"Ooookay, be right back. You can stay inside if you want, relax. Take a nap. You're still welcome to the leftover food I brought to the cave too. And if you need help just call one of... oh." Right, she almost forgot.
She held up two fingers as a wait signal and darted into her home. A few seconds later she came back out with a large empty jug and a ladle.
"If you need help bang on this really loudly with this a bunch of times." Jun demonstrated by hitting the jug with the ladle exactly once so as to not alarm anyone nearby. The jug made exactly the sort of sound one would expect. "The nearby hunters and lumberjacks will treat it as a distress call. I may have some... other friends that might come running too. Just don't abuse it."
After quickly going over the awkward conversation of where to use the bathroom, Jun left Duna to her own devices for a bit.
--------
A few minutes later, Jun returned with several gifts. One was a long, indigo blue tunic which Jun felt would go well with Duna's current skin tone. The fabric was a bit like linen, but thicker and coarser, and in some places the color was a little splotchy. But it was well-made enough given the circumstances, and it breathed well in the warm climate. The Usqueans were skilled enough with textiles that even the apocalypse wasn't going to take that away from them.
"Uh so this is a bit awkward. We don't exactly have a tail cover so..." Jun grinned sheepishly and showed her what looked like a long cloth cone, a cut-open water skin, and some twine. "You can kinda jury-rig this into a tail cover."
Jun also presented her with a regular water-skin, a knife and a spear.

Duna's eyes widened as Jun returned with the items, something of a childlike wonder appearing in her yellow pools. She'd rarely received gifts as a child, her and her parents not having much to spare. She took the various items and cradled them in her arms, and looked up at Jun, immense gratitude in her eyes that didn't need to be translated. She did look at little confused by the tail cover materials, but it didn't take long before she understood and managed to cobble one together.

Jun had never seen anyone be so happy to receive basic survival amenities. And yet, she felt she understood. As long as civilization was still in its fledgling stages, even a good rag was a valuable commodity.
She smiled and patted her on the back.
While Duna was jury-rigging her tail-cover, Jun went over to her shelves and rummaged through her scrolls, mana seeds, and other odd mage things. She wanted to figure out if there was some way to restore her telepathic abilities, at least temporarily.
"Duna, what can you tell me, er, scribble me, about your telepathic powers? Like, how did you turn them on and off in your head? Were they tied with a particular element? Stuff like that?" She continued rummaging as she spoke, placing more odd little trinkets and samples on her table. The oddest thing was a little worm in a glass jar filled with water; it appeared to still be alive.
Jun herself had forgotten to ask for her gambeson back. As the linen sleeves of her shirt billowed back from her rummaging, Duna might notice little scars all over her right arm, and a gnarly burn patch on her right forearm.

Jun was about done laying random oddities on the table when Duna posed her question. She paused and looked at her scars, and then hung her head in shame and grinned. A slight, halted chuckle escaped her throat. She wasn't sure when it happened, but at some point her shame over the scars had vanished.
"Well, you see, I have a bad habit of trying to do the impossible. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes, not so much. An evil god threatened my homeland back in the old world. I hit it as hard as I could. It didn't work. So out of desperation, well, I tried to figure out how to hit it even harder."
Jun picked up what looked like a brown seed, with faint glowing blue capillaries running along its skin. She examined it, as if to make sure it was in good shape.
"Some problems require cleverness to solve. Other times, the solution is just to hit it even harder. Picking the right one can be tricky sometimes."
Jun handed the odd seed to Duna.
"There is a bit of magic in that seed. See if you can absorb it into your body by concentrating."
Jun wished she knew more about how Duna's powers worked. But she figured this first step alone had a 50/50 shot of working, perhaps greater depending on Duna's magical aptitude.

It was a shame she had to learn in such a hard way.
When Jun placed down the seed however, Duna just looked at her confused. Magic? It wasn't real, was it? Still, Duna tried to concentrate on the seed, scrunching up her face cutely as she did so. After almost a minute, all she had given herself was a headache.

Jun observed carefully as Duna tried to absorb the magic. She did her best to appear polite, even though her facial scrunching was quite adorable. More importantly, she started theorizing what was wrong, and how she could make some more headway.
"It's ok, don't hurt yourself." She said reassuringly. Then she took a fresh scroll and a charcoal stick from her pile of trinkets and started scribbling. "It might take a lot of hard work for you to get your telepathy back," she said without taking her eyes off her notes. "It must have been so innate, so... instinctive. I know the feeling."
She drew some runes at the top of the page, and then in the middle made several C shapes next to each other. The C shapes formed a long row, like a stripped cylinder.
"Ok, Duna, this is going to be complicated." She took a deep breath and tried to remember everything Avalux has taught her about magic.
"So, something about this island is preventing magic from coalescing as easily at it should. Now don't freak out, but there is a good chance said thing is, well, alive. Some sort of deity or spirit or something. We don't know if it's good or evil, or if it even exists, but if it does, then it doesn't want large amounts of magic to coalesce. This doesn't mean you can't use magic, but it means you have to try harder, and you have to be more efficient. Things that used to come naturally are gonna take more focus."
Jun pulled out another mana seed. Holding it on the palm of her hand, she placed her other hand above it. The seed started to glow. "Picture magic as a sort of matter. It's like water. It can exist as a vapor." A faint cloud of glowing gas materialized in the space above the seed. "Liquid." The gas condensed by a factor of ten, and formed a little floating tear drop. "Solid." The little tear drop shrank down even more, forming into a single point of light. The little sparkle couldn't have been bigger than a single grain of sand, but it produced enough light that it would hurt if Duna stared straight at it for too long.
Jun pulled her upper hand away, and the grain expanded back into a cloud, and then slowly sank into the seed again.
"Think of magic as a living thing. The more you take the time to understand it, the more it will listen to you. It's like a new friend. In fact-" She put her hands on the runes she had drawn earlier. "These symbols roughly translate to 'Duna is a new friend'." Jun smiled. "The little squiggly line is your tail."

I know the feeling." She drew some runes at the top of the page, and then in the middle made several C shapes next to each other. Things that used to come naturally are gonna take more focus." "These symbols roughly translate to 'Duna is a new friend'." Jun smiled. "The little squiggly line is your tail." Duna gave her a look like a deer in the lamp lights. She might as well have been speaking another language. Matter? Vapor? Turning water into some sort of light? These weird symbols? This was all so... alien to her. Magic even being a possibility was near comprehensible to her. In the end, she simply looked confused and a little scared.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated

Jun's enthusiasm faded a bit as she saw how reluctant Duna was.
"I guess, aside from your telepathy, magic wasn't very common in your world."
It started to dawn on her how rough this was going to be. Jun desperately wanted to help Duna, with talking, with, well, anything really. But although she was humanoid and sapient, and although they both understood smiley faces, there was certainly a cultural gap between them.
Could Duna even use magic? Some people were just lacking a certain spark. Jun thought briefly of Avalux.
"Well, let me at least reassure, any magic that happens around me isn't going to hurt you. It'll treat you with respect. And if you decide to try to learn some of it while you're around me, it'll do its best to respond to your will. The more you get to know it, the better your chances are. And maybe, just maybe, we can use it to talk."
Jun paused for a moment, then added, "That is, if you want. If you decide this stuff just isn't for you, there are some folks around here who are very, very good at sign language. The queen is a woman of few words, you see."
Tana the Tongue-Tied was a mute. Jun figured maybe she should have lead with that.

At least, she didn't think so. Though maybe the Queen could help! Well, maybe. At least she could empathize. In the meantime she just smiled at Jun, hoping she would understand that Duna didn't hold anything against her.

"Alright. At least I'm not that much of a weirdo to you."
Jun cleared some of the clutter from her table to give adequate room for her sheet.
"Ok, so from here on out, this is just for fun. You're just humoring me. There were be no homework assignments and you don't need to do anything you don't feel like doing." She smiled.
Jun went on to explain, as simply as she could, the natures of elemental magic. According to her school of thought, each element had a certain "personality" to it, with feelings and emotions associated with them. Fire was fueled by anger and passion, water by beauty and tenacity, psionics by deep thought, etc. Different people could sometimes resonate with the elements better with different emotions; it was all about cultivating a relationship with each element.
Avalux, Jun's new friend and a world-class rune smith, had taught her even more about magic, and she tried to simplify these lessons so that Duna could understand them too. In addition to a spiritual property, the elements had physical and mathematical properties, and understanding these could make spell usage more efficient. For example, controlling earth was aided by imaging mana forming into heavy lumps, while air's mana shape was more fluid and wavy. Lightning was a bit criss-crossy, And psionics were like C-shape waves.
Jun would do her best to go slowly so that Duna's head wouldn't explode. Also, depending on her perception, it'd be obvious to Duna that Jun really, really liked Avalux.
In order to demonstrate the fact that Jun wasn't crazy, she of course gave visual demonstrations of each element. Probably her most frightening demonstration was when she infused a leaf with water magic and hurled it into a spot on the floor. The leaf formed into an watery blade which struck the ground. The water then froze, splitting the earth apart. (There was no sense in hiding the fact that magic, when used properly, could be deadly.)
"Alrighty, so now that you understand magic a little better, how about we both try the seed thing again? Together, at the same time. And we'll try to use psionics to talk to each other."
Jun really did try her best to not seem pushy, but it was obvious she really wanted this to work.

Duna watched all this go by in a blur, overwhelmed with information and nursing a growing disgust and annoyance. She didn't know what any of this was but it was strange, unnatural, and she didn't like it. In the end, Duna simply stopped watching and turned away from Jun, seemingly rejecting her attempt to push for the seed, both out of disgust, and out of exhaustion.
