Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Jun's head sort of just flopped down. She sighed, defeated. "Well, it was worth one last shot." She started putting things away, a little dejected. But it wasn't Duna's fault, she supposed. It was a little strange, making friends with someone who loved magic but couldn't use it, then for the first time meeting someone who actually seemed to detest it. Jun felt oddly sleepy. "Well, if you don't mind, I'm gonna take a short break. When I get back, maybe we can learn some sign language instead, yah? No more funny glowy business. Regular drawings instead of runes." She smiled politely, hiding the fact that she felt like she had failed somehow. Assuming Duna didn't object to it, Jun would leave and go for a short walk around the village. Damnit. If only I knew more about her species. What could I be missing? Or is she just being obstinate? Lizard teenager maybe... Or maybe her entire family and everything she ever knew and loved was destroyed.Yah, maybe best not to take it personally. When they passed through the village, nobody seemed to indicate they were familiar with blue lizard people. But maybe she had missed someone. Could there be someone in the village who knew what Duna was and could help?

Outside of her house, a young deerfolk sat on a bench reading one of her books. Having just finished with a patient, the physician needed a short break, and took the time to enjoy the day’s sun. She paused for a moment to look up, only to hear a woman going around town, asking if anybody knew about “blue lizard people.” Now, this intrigued Flora, as it was quite the peculiar request. When she saw who was asking, it piqued her interest even more.
Flora had heard talk before of Jun of the Celadine, who seemed to be quite the character back in her old world. However, due to her busy work(coupled with how much time Jun spends away from the town), she had never gotten a chance to truly meet her. Interested, she put away her book and walked up to the skillful lady, clearing her throat.
“Hello, I heard you asking around about, uh, blue lizard people?” She asks, knocking a stray branch away from her antler. “I’m one of the physicians in town, my name’s Flora. I think I’ve heard of such people before, and I may have a book on their physiology, if that could help you. If you would like my help I’d be honored to give it.”

Jun was speaking with one of the local traders.
"Yah, it's a real tail! She can swivel it around and everything." Jun shook her hips slightly for effect. "No I don't know if it's prehensile- oh."
She gave a last quick smile at the trader and trotted over to Flora. She was surprised how much meeting with new people was brightening her mood. "Finally! Thank the forest." Oddly enough, she was less shocked by deer people than lizard people, though she found herself feeling her lack of height against Flora's antlers. She extended a hand for Flora to shake.
"Yes, please. My name is Jun. I... guess you could call me a local magical researcher and general do-gooder now. This lizard girl, Duna. I was under the impression she used psionics to communicate back in her old world, and that the island was blocking her powers. But she seems to have a strong aversion to magic. And I'm at a loss as to how to help her. Do you think you can help? She can barely talk and will have to learn sign language if we can't figure this out. Not that that would be the end of the world of course..." Jun assumed Flora was familiar with Tana. "But, well, you know what I mean."

Flora shook Jun’s hand, smiling. “Oh, I’ve heard of you, Jun of the Celadine. And from what I’ve heard, you seem to be selling yourself short.” She turned around to head back to her office, waving her hand in a gesture for Jun to follow her. “But that’s no matter. I may be able to help but you might have to tell me a little more about her.”
Once inside the building, she began rummaging through some of her books, looking for a specific one. “But just from what I’ve heard so far? She’ll have to anyways, if only for temporary measures and if this circumstance ever happens again. Besides, it’s a useful thing to learn.”

"Well I am short." Jun said as she followed her in, smirking at her own little pun.
She helped herself to the nearest seat and watched as Flora dug through her books.
It was nice to meet a fellow do-gooder. Jun could tell by the fact that Flora didn't keep her books heavily guarded. That meant she used the knowledge often and freely. Books were still quite valuable on the isles. Jun had insisted on helping Avalux set up magical defenses on his ship due to how important their research was. She wondered if she ought to help Flora do the same. Then again, she knew precious little about Flora, having just met. Who was to say there weren't some sort of defenses already in place? She lamented slightly, realizing that back in the old world she probably could have sensed such things immediately.
"Maybe I'm not the most qualified person to help Duna." She said idly, a bit of doubt creeping into her voice.
When Flora turned around, she'd catch Jun practicing various signs she learned from Tana: simple words like "House", "Water", "Hello," and "Thank you".

Flora chuckled at Jun’s joke. “Well you’re in good company. I’m only taller than you until shedding season.” She commented, tapping her horn in emphasis as she pulled the book she was looking for from her shelf. She opened it and began skimming, to make sure it was what she was looking for.
“We’re all doing things we aren’t exactly qualified for these days.” She commented as she looked for the page she wanted. “But that’s just the world we live in now. A man once told me that the most important qualification for most jobs now is a readiness to help, and you seem to have that in spades if what I’ve heard is correct. Ah!” She exclaimed, tapping her finger on the page before bringing it over to Jun while silently noting her practicing signs.
She set the book down on the table, Jun likely being able to note the title “Physiology of the Sentient Creatures of the Western Forests” on the cover before it hit the wood. She tapped on a diagram of a lizard-like biped, with long pointed ears and a long, thick tail stemming from the base of their spine. Above it was a label: Dinurian. “Does this look correct? Based on what I heard it seems to be the most likely species we’re dealing with.”

"I've found it useful to have at least one skill you are really good at. For instance, I'm very very good at digging latrines."
Jun wasn't lying. For whatever reason, her weakened magic excelled at exploding craters of dirt in the middle of the forest, craters that were the perfect size for taking care of one's business.
"Western Forests? Western Forests. I know a Western Forest. But I've never seen such-" Then she saw the picture of the Dinurian. "That's it. That's her!"
She folded her arms and her mouth twitched sideways. "I was gonna say this must be a Western Forest from a different timeline but I suppose it's a pretty common denomination for any forests that are west of you."

“Where I’m from, it’s a catch-all for all lands west of us, forests and beyond. Not very descriptive, I know, I’ve complained about it a lot.” Upon hearing Jun’s reaction to the picture, she nodded. “Good. It says they’re known as Dinurians, native to Hafulback. Bright colorations of pink and blue, scaled, yet hair growing. Egg-laying, yet milk-bearing. Mostly agrarian with occasional carnivorous and pescatarian tendencies. They’re quite the interesting anomaly it seems. Like a walking contradiction.”
Flora looks up from the book for a moment, realizing she forgot to ask a very important question. “Oh, yes. What issues is she having? Perhaps we should go have a look at her?”

"Well, they're no weirder than some of the local fauna. They also remind me of these odd duck-billed beaver things with poison glands we'd hear rumors about from Isran traders. They say these creatures also laid eggs and produced milk. Wouldn't have surprised me if they were real, but most people thought it was nonsense."
She was just as entranced by the picture when Flora posed her question.
"Oh, yes please! She's at my home. I'll lead you there and I can explain along the way."
Jun even offered to carry some of Flora's things as she led her back to Duna.
"I found her washed up on the beach. She was unconscious, dehydrated, and sunburned on her tail. I used what little healing magic I could to awaken her and treat her burn. She was very shy. I tried communicating with her and we ended up using pictures in the sand. Her drawing indicated that she spoke to others using her mind. I assumed this was psionics, but she seems to be repulsed by magic. She CAN talk, but with extreme difficulty. She sort of grunted her name.
"Anyways, she's alright now. So far she hasn't spoken much with anyone else but forests know we can all use more friends. But, like I said, she IS kinda shy."
When they arrived at her home, Jun would call for Duna. "Hello? Duna? Don't be scared; I have a new friend who'd like to meet you."
She immediately remembered Duna's jury-rigged tail cover and wondered how Flora was going to react. It was the best she could do on short notice after all.

Flora ponders the duck-billed beavers Jun was speaking of. “That does sound quite odd. I wish I would’ve gotten a chance to see one.” She says, gathering up her things. “I’m ready to go whenever you are then.”
As they walk, the deer woman takes in the city in the making, trying to guess where the two would be heading. It took her until they headed to a path spiraling around one of the trees to realize they would be heading to the ground. Ever since the first few public areas were erected within the canopy, she had been staying up in the trees, safe from whatever may be below, and only now did she see just how little was actually down here. A few small buildings by the paths up, the thrown-together abode of that man with the hook when he was still in town, but not much more. Soon though, she would see Jun’s house as they approached.
Caught up in her own mind, it took a minute for Flora to register what Jun had been saying. “You said she speaks with her mind?” She questioned. “And yet it isn’t magical. I didn’t see anything about that in the main article about Dinurians, however there did seem to be a section about a subspecies within them. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I’ll have to see her first though.” Upon their arrival, Flora followed Jun’s lead. “Hello, Duna? My name is Flora, and I was hoping I could help with some of your problems today.”

Duna for her part, had found the kitchen and was cooking something on the stove. At the sound of the pair's voice, she quickly turned around, stirring whatever was in a pan with her tail. She gave a short waist bow, before turning back to her cooking, not entirely sure who this new woman was, and frankly that wasn't important right now, she needed to focus.

So it IS a prehensile tail.
Jun side-eyed Flora and craned her neck up to get a better look at what Duna was making. She didn't recall if she had given Duna permission to use her kitchen, but it didn't really represent a problem.
"We'll let you finish then. But just so you know, Flora is a doctor with a lot of books, and we found an entry about your kind. She might be able to help, after lunch of course."
Feeling somewhat awkward, she invited Flora to sit down and would ask her if she thirsty. The home was exceedingly spartan, with virtually no decoration. The walls were unnaturally smooth given that they seemed to be made of simple earth. There was a general presence about the place, a friendly one, though a little odd. And there were no insects or any unpleasant smells (depending on Duna's cooking of course). The most interesting bit of it was the shelf along the wall with research notes and odd trinkets. Beneath it was the table where Jun had laid down parchment and runes in her failed attempt to teach Duna magic. She hadn't bothered to clean it up, so Flora would see the drawing she had showed her, along with some random oddities she had taken off the shelf. (The creepiest thing was probably the jar with the living worm in it.)
"I do most of my research on Avalux's ship, but sometimes I get bored at night. Or I'll have extra time on a hunting and gathering day. We're working on a few things, in particular a new type of healing rune, an autonomous one. I dunno if you've met Avalux. He hardly ever leaves the ship." Jun spoke the last words with genuine concern, giving away how much she cared about him.

Flora thanked Jun as she stepped inside, accepting the offer for a drink. She looked around at the bare walls, thinking the place seemed rather homely despite the lack of decor. Her eyes would fall on the notes and trinkets, anything she could see being focused primarily on magic. She paid it little mind, being outside of her expertise.
Her ears perked up at the mention of a healing rune. “I don’t believe I have.” She commented as she set her book down, turning to the section on the Dinurians and looking for mention of the previously mentioned telepathic abilities. “Though from the sounds of it, you two seem to be trying to put me out of the job.” She said slyly, trying to make it obvious she was joking, even if it didn’t land very well. “Maybe you should bring him around town sometime, if you want to get him off of his boat. Drag him if you have to.” She sat down, head in her hands as she continued to scan the section for mention of Duna’s affected abilities. “It sounds like he needs more sunlight anyways, magic man or not.”

While she would try not to not interrupt the two, Duna would come out of the kitchen with a pair of plates, which she would set down in front of the two. The Plate consisted of two elements, one which was pan roasted Asparagus, set as a side dish, while the main attraction was a moderately large loaf of some sort, though upon inspection it would appear to not be bread.
Duna would produce a spoon, and hit both of them, cracking whatever shell was upon it. She would smile and hoped the women would take it upon themselves to investigate further.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated

"He really does."
Jun was surprised Duna had managed to cook something so quickly. She wondered if she was especially gifted as a chef, or if every member of her family or even species was good at cooking. "Thank you so much!" She was still wide-eyed with surprise. The heat and smell were catching her off guard, though in the best possible way.
She examined the not-bread with one wide-open eye, and she sniffed. And finally she poked her spoon into the opening to see what was inside...
