Flora looked at the strange food on her plate, before looking up to Duna and smiling. “Thank you, it looks good.” She said, before turning back to the food and inspecting it closer. The asparagus she had seen before, she knew it would likely taste good. The loaf, though, now that intrigued her. She gave it a few experimental taps, feeling the hard shell, before taking her spoon and poking at the inside with it.

As the two opened up the shell, they would find none other than a whole, baked fish!
She had salt baked the fish, spicing it, then coating it with a thick layer of salt. Duna smiled at the two of them, hoping they would enjoy the piscine meal.

Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

At first Jun was a little aghast. She was fully expecting something bread-like based on the appearance. The sight and smell of silver scales and ocean threw her. But as she took another breath, she felt warm and tingly. And then she dug in.
...
It was the most moist, evenly cooked, and aromatic fish she had ever tasted.
"This is brilliant." She said between mouthfuls. "Thank you so much."
She knew salt was a useful preservative, and a seasoning. For some reason it had never occurred to her to use it to actually cook, probably because she was still somewhat new to living by the sea.

Flora’s eyes widened as she saw the fish within the loaf, only now realizing that it was actually salt. She looked up at Duna and smiled as best she could, feeling bad about the news she had to break to her. “Thank you, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to eat this lovely fish you’ve prepared.” She pats her stomach. “I can’t eat meat, you see. My body isn’t built for it.”
Looking back down at her food(not wanting to look Duna in the eye in case she caught any disappointed or saddened look), Flora took a bite of the asparagus side, savoring the delicious flavor. Then, her eye would turn to the part of the shell that was set aside. After a moment of hesitation, she broke off a small part of it and licked the side of the salt shell that wasn’t touching the fish, savoring the treat. “Again, thank you. Everything else here is still delicious!”

In the meantime, she returned to the kitchen to begin washing up.

"Psst." Jun pointed her chin at Flora's plate and grinned. She took her asparagus and placed it on Flora's plate. "Do you wanna trade?" She whispered. "I eat plenty of veggies it's fine."
One could hardly be called a glutton for overeating fish in a world where one's protein wasn't guaranteed (unless it was bugs).
"Can you eat the same sort of plants as the rest of us or can your body handle some things we can't? Next time I go foraging maybe I can save some things for you that I wouldn't normally eat myself. Oh, oh, how well versed are you on ocean plants? There are some fronds, mosses, and algae that we know are edible, and some we suspect are edible but aren't too sure about because they look like things that are poisonous... or things that have tried to... er, eat us back when we attempted to harvest them."
She suddenly had a flashback to Mr. Carrot in her old world. She missed him.

Flora smiled at Jun, before happily handing over the fish(after breaking off a little bit more salt, that is.) “I thank you.”
She truly felt bad about not being able to eat the fish, it seemed Duna had worked quite hard on it. At least this way it wouldn’t go to waste. Plus, she did get more of that delicious asparagus.
“Most things green tend to agree with me.” Flora answered, trying to think of anything that might stick out to others. “And while they don’t make a very good meal, I do like the taste of most flowering plants. Just be careful not to pick the ones you know are poisonous to you, I have the same immunities there. As for the potentially poisonous substances I’m sure I could get you in contact with someone more knowledgeable on how to test that, once we’re done here. It’s the least I could do to help out around here.”

"I'd love to meet someone like that. Maybe we could write a guide for foragers and pass it around. In this world even seemingly small gestures like that could save a lot of lives. I need to make a note of that." With some food still on her plate (and in her mouth), Jun got up from her table and walked over to the desk where her failed magic lesson lay. She took a quill and some ink and scribbled something on the side of the psionic sigil.
(Jun was prone to frenetic bursts of energy. When she had a good idea, she committed to it. She was a very proactive human being, driven by powerful emotions. It was easy to imagine how someone like this had become a heroic sorceress in another realm.)
When she was done making her note, she hopped back to her meal, her butt landing in the chair with an uncouth thump which shook their table slightly. "... Sorry." She smiled at Flora apologetically, and briefly.
(Avalux had made her aware that the strengths of her character also came with weaknesses, mainly self-absorption, recklessness, and sometimes exhaustion. She promised she'd work on her flaws, but at times they were noticeable even in slight day to day events such as this.)
"What was it like for you, when you first arrived on the isles?" Only now did Jun realize how little she knew about the stranger she had just invited into her home to interact with her confused refugee charge. It was obvious Flora was benevolent, and Jun was used to being fearless around strangers anyways. But it wasn't the first time she wondered if she ought to practice more prudence when it came to meeting people, if only for decorum's sake.

Flora made note of Jun’s enthusiasm, resolving to get her in contact with her friend as soon as she could. As Jun accidentally shook the table with her fall into her chair, Flora grabbed her plate and lifted it up, so none of her food would rattle off. “No worries.” She reassured, setting her plate down and taking a piece of asparagus in her hand. “I’ve dealt with much worse. You might be surprised how often patients kick.”
She put the piece of asparagus in her mouth, chewing thoughtfully as Jun asked her question. She stayed silent for a moment, thinking before swallowing her food and answering.
“At first it was miserable.” Flora answered bluntly. “So many people were hurt, and there was little I could do to help. I didn’t have supplies, clean working environments were slim to none. We…we lost quite a few good people.” She went quiet for another moment, bowing her head slightly in respect to the fallen.
“At that point I felt helpless, like there was nothing I could do to help. I wanted to give up. Then this nice man spoke to me, and he told me what I needed to hear. He reminded me that even more would’ve been lost without my effort, and that the worst of it was already passed. I forget exactly what he said, but it was very flowery. I wonder if he was a poet, or maybe a philosopher. Either way, he really helped me regain focus on my goal of helping as many people as possible. From what I heard I wasn’t the only one, either. Some of the others he spoke to are starting to get together, and they said they may turn his temporary shelter into a sort of communal house. It sounds like an interesting project.”
Flora took another bite of her food. “What of you? How were your first days on the island?”

Jun nodded along while taking bites of her fish. She felt a little guilty; her meal was legitimately delectable, an uncomfortable match with their topic of conversation.
Jun scarcely had to think about how to respond. "Well, I rode a whale to shore, nearly died of dehydration, met a queen, became friends with some foxes with wings, nearly died to a giant moss bull in heat, befriended a surly dwarf and a mercenary, and discovered how to make latrines with what little magic I had left. So, you know, same as everyone else I supposed." She chuckled, but the tone of her tale was flatter and more pensive, lacking in the enthusiasm from before.
"The hardest part for me has always been not knowing. Not knowing what happened to my family, my friends, my nation, my patrons. I could deal with only having a fraction of my previous strength. I never gave up, no matter what the odds were. I'd fight a god with a toothpick if I thought I had a chance to give it a splinter. But..."
She took a quick glance back at Duna before returning to Flora. "I'll always do what I can. Always. But, every day I still hope and pray that everything I did in the old world, before the floodwaters, wasn't for nothing. That some of the people I saved survived. And maybe, just maybe, they aren't crying out for help."
Jun managed to take another bite. She suddenly started to feel full.

“I can understand. I don’t get many free moments, but that’s all I think about when I do.” Flora paused for a moment. “...I miss them. I miss my brother.”
Flora’s gaze followed Jun’s, looking at Duna before turning back to the conversation. “It’s very admirable, what you do. Not many would, and Duna was lucky to encounter you.” She paused for a moment, poking at the food she had left. “I’ll tell you now, Jun, it wasn’t for nothing. Even if only for a while, you improved lives. Theirs and you own.” She took the last piece of asparagus and ate it, giving her a chance to organize her thoughts. “Every flower is going to wilt one day. At least you helped them bloom first.
She set her plate back, before looking back at Jun and seeing her expression. “Oh…I brought down the mood, didn’t I? …Sorry.”

Jun shook her head slightly and smiled softly. She forced down another bite of fish. She was grateful, but in a peculiar way which left a lump in her throat.
She wanted to tell Flora that she blamed herself for bringing down the mood, not her, but she was afraid her voice would crack if she stopped eating fish.
After a few moments she said, "My younger self is practically begging me to join your group. I think a part of me is starting to outgrow working myself to death though."
After a tense moment, she bit her lip and swallowed.
"So how do I join?" A muted chuckle punctuated her tone.
What little vestige of maturity that resided in her brain smacked itself in its metaphorical forehead.

Flora let the silence lie there, if only for the fact that she wasn’t sure what to say next. Even after Jun’s first comment, she didn’t speak. It was at this point she wished someone like Erahnya or Mavury were here instead. They were much more involved with what the group were doing, they might be able to talk to her about it. She just did what she could between patients.
At Jun’s question though, Flora chuckled alongside her. “Honestly? You already have the helping taken care of, so all you would really need is to start saying you’re a part of it. If you have more questions to ask about it though I wouldn’t blame you. But I can only help so much unfortunately. With my practice I’ve only been able to act on the fringes of what they’re doing. You may be able to ask someone near the house I brought up earlier though, they’d be able to talk to you about it. They should be easy to find too, since there aren’t many other projects being done on the forest floor here.”
Flora looked back at Duna. “Speaking of my practice though, maybe we should get back to why I’m here.” She said to Jun. “I’m quite intrigued by what the problem she’s facing might be.”

"Hmm, non-magical communication. Aside from their voices, people communicate with body language and facial expression, and of course words and letters. There are animals that communicate with scent and visual displays, and sometimes with sounds that normal people can't hear."
Jun stared thoughtfully down at her fish bones.
"When I first arrived on the isles, I had a little bit of magic left in me. I used it to reach out to the creatures around me. I was asking for help. A large whale-like creature carried me and helped me get to shore. When I connected with it, I... well it's a little hard to explain. I felt what it was like to be it, just barely. I remember a part of my mind was focused in and around my throat, er, its throat. And I felt a thought. Well, it wasn't a thought like a person thought, it was more of a feeling, a flash, of communion, being part of a group. And with that feeling was the sensation of... singing. Singing to someone very very far away."
She looked back at Duna for a second. "Maybe Duna has a special organ or tissues in her throat or somewhere else in her head which let her produce special sounds, sounds which her kind are especially sensitive to. And maybe they were injured somehow."
Jun might wave awkwardly if they made eye contact. "She can understand us, by the way. Wasn't sure if that was clear."

"Hmm, non-magical communication. Aside from their voices, people communicate with body language and facial expression, and of course words and letters. There are animals that communicate with scent and visual displays, and sometimes with sounds that normal people can't hear." Jun stared thoughtfully down at her fish bones. And with that feeling was the sensation of... singing. Singing to someone very very far away." She looked back at Duna for a second. "Maybe Duna has a special organ or tissues in her throat or somewhere else in her head which let her produce special sounds, sounds which her kind are especially sensitive to. And maybe they were injured somehow." Jun might wave awkwardly if they made eye contact. "She can understand us, by the way. Wasn't sure if that was clear." Duna nodded, smiling at the two of them. She still didn't like all this talk of magic, but Jun didn't seem to be a bad person. But if she wasn't a bad person, why could she use these terrible powers? It just didn't make sense. Anyway, she needed to figure out how to communicate again.
She spread her arms wide, hoping to show that she was willing to be examined as needed.
