Jace's eyes are sympathetic when lets him into a glimpse of her past. "For it's worth, I am appreciative that you still live and have not set with the sun." Jace thinks to himself, it's probably his turn to share a bit of his past. "I was not very welcomed by the members of my village. I did not look like everyone else and did not enjoy the same things as all the other schoolboys my age" Jace hasn't met anyone who shares his same condition of paleness, so pale some even though he himself had crawled out from an unmarked grave. "I am grateful for your kindness, many have not shown me many pleasantries. I want to earn your friendship," friendship was a good start, he felt too nervous to ask her to be any more than friends at the moment. His heart wanted companionship but his brain had more common sense than his foolish love-starved heart.
"you have a good protector with you. He seems a foe to be reckoned with for whoever is at the other end of his blade. I am not much of a fighter, my skills are with the occult but I want to protect you too"

Age: 90 (appears early 20s)
Appearance: A thin half-elf, whose olive skin has a greenish tint. Slightly pointed ears. Noticeably wide grin. Dark brown eyes and straight black hair.
Her knuckles are calloused with little scars.
Equipment: A pitch black long coat-style gambeson and a kettle helmet. A longsword inscribed with runes. A pouch of medicinal herbs. A buckler with a long chain attached to it.
A clay flute. A pair of fuzzy pink earmuffs.
A thick black book filled with strange notes...
Skills and Abilities: Kua possesses remarkable gymnastic and martial arts abilities. Her kinesthetic intelligence is very high. She is also a skilled sword fighter and unconventional buckler wielder. Kua also possesses the potential for fire and holy magic. The mists keep it at bay, but the force of her emotions can occasionally overcome it.
She is quite skilled with a flute.
She struggles with complex abstract concepts and mathematics, and demonstrates no social fear. She has a heart condition that requires periodic herbal treatment.
Biography: Kua Redford was born with a disability similar to William's Syndrome. Her parents were overprotective and fearful Kua would never be able to live a normal life. However, Kua also possessed a fierce, independent drive. What started as basic self-defense lessons became an obsession with becoming a warrior so that she could survive on her own.
Kua was enabled by the King of her city-state of Whitehall, a man who saw great potential in her. He had her further trained so she could fulfill her wish of becoming a great paladin someday. Although there were many doubters and Kua's progress was slow, the king went to his deathbed still believing in her dream.
(It didn't hurt that the king was secretly her grandfather. But that is a very long story.)
Because Kua is a half-elf, she ages slowly. Bigots from her world believe her "condition" to be a result of her being a half-breed.

"I know. Everyone wants to protect me. I have that effect on people." Kua smiled softly. Her words were soft and easy, perhaps entrancing to the young Jace.
She rotated the roasting fowl a little.
"The thing is, the easiest way to protect a bird is to lock it in a cage. And I never want to be locked in a cage. I want freedom. I want to hug others and befriend whoever I want. But, ironically, that kind of freedom requires power. So I train a lot, with my sword and my body. To be the damsel I wish to be, I also have to be the knight."
She gave a quick glance to Travels Far and turned back to Jace. "You have my friendship. It's his you have to earn. Hehe."
She again rotated their lunch slightly.
"I understand what it's like to look different. I'm a half elf." She held her arm up. Her skin was a very light, very human olive skin, but it had a slight green tint to it which was impossible to un-see once you noticed it. "We weren't common when I was young. I... Mmm." She paused. She had more to say on that matter, but she wasn't sure she was ready to continue further. It was still a sensitive topic.

he chuckles nervously when she mentioned Travels Far. "I will also try to befriend your knight friend here. If I am to die by his blade I hope you will come to my funeral" he jokes with her the initial butterflies having been digested. "I know this much that you're probably stronger than me. I run away from problems instead of facing them head on. I am not one who wants conflict."
Jace does have quite a docile and passive personality. "I ended up running away from my home because of my features. How ironic that people thought I was born from a grave and went on to study things that have gone to the grave. I am pleased that we are now friends"
"so your friend Travels Far does he goes wherever you go?" He wonders how much privacy Kua has been allowed under the watchful supervision of this strange knight.

"Aww, you are young and handsome. You have plenty of time to become stronger, and braver, if you want of course."
She intended the handsome bit to be in contrast to his perceived paleness. She blushed slightly. Oh, maybe I shouldn't have said that.
"Um, anyways, uh, Travels Far found me when I washed up on the beach. His, um, order [she almost said 'colony'] came here after getting away from very bad kings who ruled with evil magic. They looked after me, and then decided they wanted to explore the isles and try to make friends. I was the one who chose to go with Travels Far. His people can be scary, so I want to make sure others know they are not so scary when you get to know them. So in a way we are keeping each other safe."

"h-handsome?" he squeaked out his face turning 5 shades redder. "t-thank you" he quickly cleared his throat to help him calm down. "He doesn't seem too scary when he isn't pointing a sword at me" he nervously laughing taking a peek at Travels Far. "I will join you in your adventures. I want to find a new home in this new place, well maybe not right this place."

Kua hung her head in amusement when she saw him blush. Oh she really wished she hadn't said what she did!
"What can you do to fight? I used to have fire magic which let me jump around, and I could combine it with kicking, punching, and my sword. But, this land suppresses magic. It doesn't bother me really. New land, new rules. I understand. But sometimes I think I should try to practice it again to see if I can adapt."
She pointed a single finger towards their cooking fire, and a single, solitary ember halted itself from its usual updraft. Kua slowly moved her finger sideways, and the single ember drifted away from the campfire. She lowered her finger, and the ember settled into the sand, extinguishing itself. "Hehe." She giggled softly.

"I uh well I too also use magic but my magic is used to commune with the deceased and scrying. I was not made for fighting. I did not know this land suppresses magic, though I did not have a reason to use it. Before, I fought with pitchforks to chase away violent villagers wishing for my death." Jace is a lanky lad that looks as if he has never had enough food to really give him enough meat on his bones. He was good in many other things but he did not enjoy fighting, he was useful in other ways but hurting people made him feel guilty even though he was protecting his own life.

Kua had a thought. On top of being separated from her people (possibly forever), she had come to these isles with a separate burden.
"Commune with the dead..." She said softly.
She rotated her bird. She also peered at the fish as if curious if it was done.
"My grandfather... once befriended a god of death. It's a very interesting story. He lived much longer than most humans of my world. But sadly even he had to succumb to old age. He was one of only a handful of people who believed I could become a mighty paladin. On his deathbed, he told me he would continue to believe in me until his last breath."
Kua didn't immediately tear up, but there was a stillness to her face that suggested it could happen any moment. "I know he is from another world, and his spirit is far away, but... do you think with your power you could try to speak to him? I want to tell him I saved Whitehall on my own. That I really did it."

"your grandfather. Were you close to him?" he asked swinging the black bag he wore on his back off his shoulders to gather the supplies for communing with the dead. "Do you have anything that belongs to him? That is the best way to contact him specifically or else we'll be connected with whoever died nearest to our location." He will pull out a leather drawstring pouch of salt and a half-used black circle as well as a sturdy hardbound book. "Many people do not like this type of so-called magic. People often believe the dead should rest and living folks ought not to meddle with the affairs of the dead. I hope you will not judge this magic I do and think of a monster. I will be honest with you the connection with your departed grandfather may not be as clear or as long as what is typical as we may be quite far from his burial grounds. The further we stray from their final resting place the more muddled the connection"
He will begin to crave out a symbol within the dirty using a nearby branch. The symbol looks archaic and beastly but it has an odd familiarity to those that look upon it. The symbol doesn't seem to originate from any language. Jace will sprinkle salt from his closed fist into the indent in the earth until they're filled with the salty grain.

Kua folded her arms as she tried to think of something. She didn't have anything that specifically belonged to him. All her equipment was her own. Her sword was of elven design and not from the old king.
But then, inspiration struck her. The rules of magic were often nebulous. Maybe she could use something that was sentimentally tied to him. She reached back to her things, which were in a bag next to her gambeson. "When I was younger, my condition made it hard for me to deal with loud noises. They hurt my ears and frightened me. And it was hard because explosive magic was common. Many people thought that alone would make it impossible for me to be a fighter. But King Ash was always very determined. He taught me to never assume something is impossible unless you give it a shot first."
Kua carefully handed Jace a pair of fuzzy pink earmuffs. They looked strangely solid, with leather chin straps and tightly woven band. The fuzzy part was covered with hard leather and even had what looked like protection runes sowed in. They were combat worthy, but they were still fuzzy and pink.
"These were the last thing he gave me. The old ones burned up. It was kind of my fault." She snickered.

He will take the earmuffs and examine them. "Are you alright with my getting wax on these? I would hate to ruin them" He then quirks an eyebrow at her last sentence. "you burned the old ones? That sounds like a good story that you must tell me"
Jace will then return to the task at hand and with her approval, he will drip some wax onto the earmuffs before putting it in the center of the symbol he created earlier. "Hello?" he asks listening for any type of reply. "We seem to have connected with someone. Someone named Ash, he says he knows those earmuffs but the connection is faint. What do you want to ask him Kua? We might not have very long."

"That is fine. They were made to be easy to clean. Big elf ears can get gross sometimes." Kua frowned slightly, thinking maybe that was too much information to share.
Kua watched the ritual carefully, breath bated. It looked deceptively simple, and to Kua it felt rather mundane. This was fine of course. Kua had already decided that, despite her hopes, she wouldn't hold it against Jace if he couldn't make contact. It was just nice of him to try.
Then Jace said Ash.
Kua's face ran cold. Her eyes bulged. She seemed paralyzed. Was... was it really possible?
-------
Jace would feel heavy and warm. It was a strong and courageous spirit, but also a kind one. There were eyes on Jace's neck; a tingling would come from behind and to the side, though of course there was nothing visible, and no hint of physical manifestation. But with his mind's eye, Jace would imagine an intense, bearded man, with speckled grey hair, and an aura of light that could shatter boulders.
Tell her her flames shone brighter than the sun that day.
Tell her they're throwing parades in her honor, even though I know she doesn't care.
Tell her she'll surpass me one day, if she hasn't already,
And this one's for you, Jace. Take good care of her. She'll protect you with her life.
It was a soul alright, the soul of a dead man. But in life he was exactly the sort of man who'd look at the vast void of time and space and treat it as a challenge. He was determined in death, and even beyond. If he could wrestle demons down and tear liches apart in life, he could answer a simple greeting from the mortal realm, vastness of the universe be damned.
And Kua was right, Jace was a pretty handsome young man.

Travels Far looked on. It had no expression, and it's body language suggested slight intrigue at this ceremony. However all the faceless felt seeing this display...was utter confusion.
Two Trueborn sitting, looking at waxy earmuffs. Saying something about ashes and frail connection. Travels Far did not see sinew or tissue connecting to the earmuffs and that wax wouldn't be coming off without some work, perhaps it was some kind of Trueborn game.

"This man has many kind words to say to you, Kua." Jace listens intently before repeating the words. "Your flames shone brighter than the sun that day, that parades are being thrown in your honor, and you'll surpass him one day if not already." Jace will give her a hug. "He seems like a very powerful and devoted man in his life to whatever he set his heart to. Thank you for visiting us Mr. Ash" The signal soon fizzles away and with that, the ritual is completed.
"did that answer your questions, Kua?"

Kua leaned deeply into the hug. And she felt him. Jace's words tracked; the king fancied himself an articulate soul. But somehow she could also just sense he was telling the truth.
"Silly, he knows I don't care about parades," Kua spoke softly in Jace's ear.
It felt good to hug another trueborn. The moment itself was wonderful, but Kua had almost forgotten what it was to hug someone of her own kind (or at least close enough). She wanted the moment to last a long time, even though she had just met Jace.
Kua sniffed the air. "Oh, uh, our flesh food is probably finished cooking by now." She pulled back with a giggle to examine and removed the cooked fish and bird.
A curious phenomenon happened as she pulled away. Where Kua's hands had been on Jace's back, there would be a warm tingle which lingered beyond the hug. It would be a pleasant, mildly empowering sensation. Jace might notice that Kua's fingernails had the slightest red glow, as if sunlight was shining through them and being filtered through their capillaries. Little embers would gently drift towards her hands, but not quite reach them or make contact. It was more like they were magnetically drawn to her fingers.
Travels Far might notice this too. Strangely, Kua herself seemed oblivious, perhaps lost in thought about the seance.
