The faceless cooked it's head in confusion before slowly nodding in understanding, it then began to dig through the pile and provided some more herbs for Kua to search. Content with the branches offered it piled those up and beckoned a nearby faceless over, making vocalisations while gesturing at Kua's herbs aside to say: "Keep an eye out for these but don't eat them."

Appearance: A thin half-elf, whose olive skin has a greenish tint. Slightly pointed ears. Noticeably wide grin. Dark brown eyes and straight black hair.
Her knuckles are calloused with little scars.
Equipment: A pitch black long coat-style gambeson and a kettle helmet. A longsword inscribed with runes. A pouch of medicinal herbs. A buckler with a long chain attached to it.
A clay flute. A pair of fuzzy pink earmuffs.
A thick black book filled with strange notes...
Skills and Abilities: Kua possesses remarkable gymnastic and martial arts abilities. Her kinesthetic intelligence is very high. She is also a skilled sword fighter and unconventional buckler wielder. Kua also possesses the potential for fire and holy magic. The mists keep it at bay, but the force of her emotions can occasionally overcome it.
She is quite skilled with a flute.

Biography: Kua Redford was born with a disability similar to William's Syndrome. Her parents were overprotective and fearful Kua would never be able to live a normal life. Kua was enabled by the King of her city-state of Whitehall, a man who saw great potential in her. He had her further trained so she could fulfill her wish of becoming a great paladin someday. Although there were many doubters and Kua's progress was slow, the king went to his deathbed still believing in her dream.

Kua put her fist in her palm to her chest and bowed in gratitude to her cow ant friends. It was satisfying that they understood her. She wanted to hop for joy and clap, but she found herself conscientious of every action she took. She didn't want to scare any of the faceless or make them think she was having a seizure or something.
She'd continue to gather more sticks and offer the superior biomatter for more of the lesser but special biomatter. She'd also occasionally check the pile for things like fruits, nuts, flowers, and certain insects. If she encountered anything else of value, she'd of course offer more sticks as trade.
This would go on for about half an hour before she'd decide to return to Crown of Fingers and Turns Pages. She was curious what sort of flesh food was available on this island.

Crown of Fingers was nudged a few times by Turns Pages, alerting them to the approaching Kua, for some odd reason the sight of the Trueborn filled Crown of Fingers with a peculiar warm sensation a gentle warmth like body heat in winter as opposed to the violent internal fires that burned when they learned of the goals of the Empyreans.
Speaking again in that coarse stone-hewn voice Crown of Fingers asked Kua: "How was journey? We finish cooking many trial and error." And indeed there was a noticeable smell of charred flesh however sat on a rock were some lumps of crudely roasted unidentifiable meat that appeared to have been roasted over a fire and possibly stuck into the fire.

"Journey was good. I learned many things. I met more of your kind, and they treated me well. We found some herbs that I think I can use for medicine. I offered sticks to the faceless gathering them in exchange. And I did not meet the scary ones, Cannot Heal or Loyal. Not yet anyways."
Kua approached the assortment of charred meat. She sniffed the air as she came close. It wasn't the perfect meal, but she was hungry enough that it would have to do.
"That reminds me. I think there is a way to preserve flesh food for true borns using ash."
She gingerly took the roast and sniffed it again. She was about to take a bite when a question popped into her head.
"Just out of curiosity, what animal was this?"

This was not the answer Kua expected.
Kua had made many strange friends in her (actually pretty long) life. None of them had offered themselves as food before.
She stared at the lump of meat, mouth still slightly open from her initial intention to take a bite. The more she looked at it, the more it smelled appetizing. And yet, she was literally about to eat a friend. She studied the various nooks and crannies, the opaque black of the grill(?) marks. Her eyes seemed to be stalling for time.
Her hand moved an inch closer to her face as the seconds drew painfully long.
Kua occasionally hunted. She always killed the animal quickly and respectfully and said a little prayer after. Elves had an enormous respect for life. But in this case, nothing had actually died.
Besides, turning down the offer would probably ruin her friendship with the faceless. And, well, it was fully consensual right?
Right before the meat touched her lips, she recalled the humans and their taboo about eating other people. Not that elves ate other people on the regular, but really humans were the race you'd most likely find someone who'd rather starve to death than eat the corpse of another person. Was it distasteful among elves (no pun intended), sure. But they'd understand if you had no choice. In most human cultures you could still be exiled for such a thing even if it was to save your life.
There were a few reasons why cannibalism wasn't really relevant in this case, but the thought still crossed her mind.
Ok. Enough was enough. She couldn't stall anymore.
She took a bite. She chewed.
She swallowed.
"You... taste like chicken." She said flatly.
"D-does it hurt when you offer yourselves like this?"
She slowly went for another bite. She was scared, terrified, mortified beyond comprehension, to admit to herself and to the faceless that they actually tasted pretty good.

"Trueborn hurt, old masters make faceless no hurt. Just take meat sometimes, normal for us, Trueborn feel pain, very strange, pain make it so you not work, very slow." Crown of Fingers seemed to pause, completely calm seeing Kua eat. "Why do Trueborn still feel pain?" Asked Crown of Fingers as if they were discussing the weather.
"Pain seems obstacle, why keep?" There was a casual curiosity in it's harsh voice as well as a clear lack of understanding of basic biology. Crown of Fingers thought about pain and hurting, it knew that the Empyrean's took a strange joy in pain, often using their vast power to ensure that pain was maximised.
It took a moment for Crown of Fingers to notice the dramatic change of expression in Kua's face...perhaps it would be best if they didn't mention anything about what the Empyrean's did.

Thinking about the question distracted Kua from the fact that she was eating consensual meat. "Hmm..." She took another casual bite.
"Trueborn, we cannot heal as quickly as you can. My shoulder hurts, and it will take at least a couple of weeks to be as strong as before. Our bodies are the bodies created by nature. They were not built to fight. There is no assigned purpose until we give them purpose."
She took another bite. "Not feeling pain, I think is like my curse. I told you I am strange among trueborn, because I do not fear the things I should. I fear being a failure. I fear physical things. But I do not fear other trueborn, nor beings like you. When I was young, I would get into trouble. My life could be in danger. I could not be trusted, because I was too kind. Trueborn must feel fear to protect themselves."
Painful childhood flashbacks also distracted her from the nature of her food. She finished the last bite and then reached for her sword. She held it out to show it to Crown of Fingers and Turns pages. It had an ornate hilt and was engraved along the blade.
"But then my parents and my grandfather taught me to fight, and I became a warrior. My lack of fear made me stronger. I could face anyone and anything and do what I needed to do. Even some evil magicks don't work on me. So I could ask, why should one feel fear of others? Is it not an obstacle? Is it not a detriment?"
She winced slightly and rubbed her shoulder. "For beings that cannot heal quickly, pain is a warning that we must care for our bodies, just as fear is a warning that we must care for our positions. To remove those things would be good in some cases, but it would be bad in others."

Crown of Fingers studdied the weapon, it's crest slowly bending back and forth as it did.
"It strange...in so many way Trueborn are weaker than faceless, but faceless never build like Trueborn. We remember from before ship, remember thing Trueborn and Old masters talk about. Thing called soul, soul make person a person is what Trueborn words say. I wonder now do faceless have soul? Did Old masters make soul for faceless or does soul grow? Maybe faceless are not soul things maybe we live without soul."
Crown of Fingers paused in contemplation.
"What do your Trueborn say about soul?" The homunclus asked Kua

Kua withdrew her sword and blushed slightly. "I don't know if I'm smart enough to talk about such things."
But it was more than that. Kua began to see a certain innocence in the way the faceless viewed the world. Even though they were weapons of war, they did not seem to be malicious in the slightest. They were curious creatures, untainted by the burdens of history or culture. And Kua wasn't sure she should be responsible for giving them religion. She would have been horribly embarrassed to wake up one day and find her visage carved into a mountainside or something.
She struggled to think of an innocuous answer that wouldn't accidentally land her in the position of trueborn high priestess.
"I think, any creatures that thinks it has a soul, probably has one. I think, a soul can grow and mature. And I don't think it would be up to the old masters to decide if you have a soul or not. I think that is beyond trueborn and faceless."
She nodded slightly at herself, satisfied her answer would not cause a great faceless upheaval.
"What were your old masters like? They seem not very nice."

The response Kua gave to the question was puzzling, but then again Crown of Fingers really wasn't any good at this sort of philosophical stuff. So they just nodded along. Then, then she asked, she had asked the one thing, the only thing that the homunculus had wished that she hadn't asked.
There was a pause, a gap filled with a flowing uneasy silence as Crown of Fingers thought to themselves, would it be right (morally speaking as words did not carry directions or planes like a body) to restrict information? To lie to her, she had shown kindness to them, an alien kindness that was until now beyond anything they had known.
The silence was unbearable even the wind seemed strangled.
Finally Crown of Fingers replied: "Certain want to know?"

Kua wasn't sure how to interpret the long pause. Maybe it was a bad question to ask. Or maybe the faceless didn't understand the question. Funnily enough, it was only now that she realized how hard it is to read the expressions of things with no faces.
The longer the tension ran on, the more she realized that it wasn't an easy topic for her new friends
Crown of Finger's question seemed to confirm it.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. But..."
She hesitated a bit to speak her thought, as it was a bit of a loaded statement. She wasn't sure exactly why the old masters were a difficult topic, but she had a good guess.
"... I won't judge you for the bad things the masters made you do."

Appearance: Around 9ft tall with a body visually composed of a red marbled fleshy substance and hard bony plates, three legs terminating in roughly spherical nubs, a tall spire of meat where a head is located on a human, near the top of this spire is a vaguely humanoid mask devoid of most facial features. At the top of the spire are eight fully functional fingers. No visible eyes, ears, nose or mouth.
Equipment: A 10ft pole comprised of tough wood with homunculus carapace on both ends
Skills and Abilities: Due to their alien biology their internal antenna allows them to perceive the world based entirely on waves, airwaves for shape and sound and lightwaves for colour as well as other wavelengths but I doubt anyone's going be using radios or microwaves, another trait shared by all faceless is their ability to learn voraciously, they are capable of learning by observation, mimicking activities, reading, hearing and eating things, furthermore they are capable of growing new body parts to solve problems though this needs time to analyse the problem, gather and consume organic material and then grow the part the process can take up to days depending on the size and complexity of the part. Their carapace plating is completely disposable and can be safely removed if damaged to a point where it is no longer useful. Faceless also struggle to feel pain which helps when they remove parts of themselves to upgrade or replace thus is due to their decentralised nervous system. Furthermore the faceless can safely eat and digest any organic matter even if it's horribly rotten as they are naturally immune to infections due to their tendency to simply devour whatever's infecting them. Crown of Fingers can expel a stream stream of corrosive acids a short distance and can of course grip things with it's decorative crown.
Biography: A former Slave unsure of it's place in the universe, Crown of Fingers is one of many faceless that was lost by in the mist, they acted as a general construction overseer before the mist however they lack any sense of aesthetics as they used to simply instruct others to instructions. At the time of the flood they and other faceless were in transit to a separate colony.

"Empyrean." That was a single word Crown of Fingers managed to get out. Well there was no going back from this.
"Empyreans were old masters. Empyreans made us, once make us they know that they not need work. Empyreans make more faceless, make faceless make faceless. Empyreans enjoy things, spend many times hurting other trueborn. Just for enjoy. Empyreans control all thing, change people body for enjoy, killing for enjoy."
Crown of Fingers paused at let out a tired vocalisation slouching over.
"There was Trueborn place, place call 'Iron ring' Empyreans sent faceless into it, sent Travels Far and others to disrupt to kill, to anger. Iron Ring grew tired and declare war, that was what Empyreans wanted. Iron war, faceless sent to kill in wave, Trueborn make Ironborn to fight, Ironborn not heal, Ironborn not hunger, Ironborn like faceless. Empyreans enjoy war, enjoy hurt but get bored eventually and make Iron ring into ash land. Anyone not Empyrean who live was broken. Faceless here put on ship after, were going be remade with less mind, with more loyalty. Storm and fog come, Empyrean captain dead, we here now. Others I not know."
Crown of Fingers tone had fluctuated throughout beginning with it's usual scraping voice but wavering at times sounding like rock being chipped.
"Empyrean is monster." Crown of Fingers ended on with a grave certainty now dominating it's voice.

Kua Redford
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 104
Age: 90 (appears early 20s)
She struggles with complex abstract concepts and mathematics, and demonstrates no social fear. She has a heart condition that requires periodic herbal treatment.
Biography: Kua Redford was born with a disability similar to William's Syndrome. Her parents were overprotective and fearful Kua would never be able to live a normal life. However, Kua also possessed a fierce, independent drive. What started as basic self-defense lessons became an obsession with becoming a warrior so that she could survive on her own.
Kua was enabled by the King of her city-state of Whitehall, a man who saw great potential in her. He had her further trained so she could fulfill her wish of becoming a great paladin someday. Although there were many doubters and Kua's progress was slow, the king went to his deathbed still believing in her dream.
(It didn't hurt that the king was secretly her grandfather. But that is a very long story.)
Because Kua is a half-elf, she ages slowly. Bigots from her world believe her "condition" to be a result of her being a half-breed.

It was a bit of a long story, so Kua sat down and listened carefully. She gazed sadly and sympathetically, trying to understand where such evil could come from. She tried to put herself in the faceless' shoes (that is, if they wore shoes... or even had feet in some cases).
"I agree, Empyrean is monster."
The tragedy of the Empyreans and the faceless reminded her of Whitehall's past. Though she supposed, given everything her home city had been through, they would have been analogous to the Iron Ring. She wondered if one day the forces of darkness would get bored of toying with Whitehall and reduce it to ash too.
"At least you're not monsters." She reached out and gently touched one of Crown of Finger's appendages.
"Actually, your story kinda reminds me of my grandfather and how he helped save the world. In our world, there existed a bad thing, maybe like the Empyreans. His name was Vokus. He was not a trueborn, but something from another plane, something beyond a trueborn. A god-like bad thing. And he tried to destroy my world by weakening it while he created more bad things. He did it by putting an evil queen in charge named Ashia. She stole and tortured from people, and let other bad things attack and weaken it while Vokus became stronger."
She realized she was throwing a lot of details at Crown of Fingers. "Sorry this story is a little confusing. One of the bad things that attacked our city was undead. They are slaves made from the bodies of dead people, and they are weapons of war, kind of like the faceless were. But there was one who had a very strong will, and became a champion of light even though he was undead. His name was Ash, and he was my grandfather. He and a small group of rebels fought against the bad things, and against Ashia. And eventually, he fought against the really evil bad thing named Vokus. He won. And as a reward, some good gods restored his humanity. Because the bloodline of the old kings and queens had been killed, Ash also became the new king.
"As king, he worked with his friends to protect Whitehall and try to be good. He had many friends too. Umm..." She stretched out a palm and started counting fingers one by one.
"Kai, Susanno'o, Mentha, Zack, Shade, Rain, Flain, ah that rhymes, Kaz, ah that's just Zack backwards. Hehe."
She sighed. "King Ash passed away recently. Old age. But he was a good king. He showed the world that good kings protect their people."
She looked up at Crown of Fingers and smiled. "... And that things made for evil can choose to be good."

"Vokus thing sound like watered down Empyrean using reborn instead of faceless."
Crown of Fingers thought about Kua, she was a storied traveller, keeping her in one place seemed wrong, wasteful even.
"This place." The homunclus began "it just a small piece of bigger land, I saw from mountaintop, there is more land that way." Crown of Fingers gestured west with it's staff. "If want explore more that is way, I not able to go, must stay with faceless, Travels Far go with if want. You welcome to stay if want, always welcome."
