The music was a strange sensation for Travels Far, they recall faint memories of hearing artistic sounds, they recall fragments of similar sweet sounds leaking from the imperial buildings when they were issued orders. More memories of walking amongst people like the elf behind it in the streets of the enemy, sounds shaped and moulded much like it and its kin.
Yet Travels Far could not recall the pattern of the sounds, the an ancient tapestry lost to time the details had frayed and crumbled. Instead of attempting to grasp the eroded memories Travels Far took in the sounds they were hearing and simply enjoyed them.
"These sounds." Croaked the vaguely humanoid shaped organic construct "Like gold on the air."

Age: 90 (appears early 20s)
Appearance: A thin half-elf, whose olive skin has a greenish tint. Slightly pointed ears. Noticeably wide grin. Dark brown eyes and straight black hair.
Her knuckles are calloused with little scars.
Equipment: A pitch black long coat-style gambeson and a kettle helmet. A longsword inscribed with runes. A pouch of medicinal herbs. A buckler with a long chain attached to it.
A clay flute. A pair of fuzzy pink earmuffs.
A thick black book filled with strange notes...
Skills and Abilities: Kua possesses remarkable gymnastic and martial arts abilities. Her kinesthetic intelligence is very high. She is also a skilled sword fighter and unconventional buckler wielder. Kua also possesses the potential for fire and holy magic. The mists keep it at bay, but the force of her emotions can occasionally overcome it.
She is quite skilled with a flute.
She struggles with complex abstract concepts and mathematics, and demonstrates no social fear. She has a heart condition that requires periodic herbal treatment.
Biography: Kua Redford was born with a disability similar to William's Syndrome. Her parents were overprotective and fearful Kua would never be able to live a normal life. However, Kua also possessed a fierce, independent drive. What started as basic self-defense lessons became an obsession with becoming a warrior so that she could survive on her own.
Kua was enabled by the King of her city-state of Whitehall, a man who saw great potential in her. He had her further trained so she could fulfill her wish of becoming a great paladin someday. Although there were many doubters and Kua's progress was slow, the king went to his deathbed still believing in her dream.
(It didn't hurt that the king was secretly her grandfather. But that is a very long story.)
Because Kua is a half-elf, she ages slowly. Bigots from her world believe her "condition" to be a result of her being a half-breed.

Kua paused. "Gold on the air. Ooh, like a sunset."
She continued playing. The path towards the mountains seemed to go by quickly. Her song became simpler and monotonous at points, which seemed to reflect the tedium of their journey. And yet it simultaneously served to ease that tedium. Music could be therapeutic.
Eventually, though, she would stop. "Sorry, my shoulder is hurting badly." She had almost forgotten about the circumstances in which she arrived in this world.
Kua started to wonder what she would do when she met more of Travel Far's people. "You said you are part of a whole. What is your whole like?"

Travels Far paused, how would be a way to explain what they were? This person this Kua, would they accept the truth? Would they accept what they had done? What any of the faceless had done? Were they accountable? They were serving the Empyreans after all not their own needs but...was that their whole now? After all there was no way they could reach the empire again was the whole the empire or was it this colony?
"We...we are not like you, not like your kind. We work and we eat but not much else, work, eat all we know all we did before...this" they replied gesturing to the landscape around them.
The faint sound of croaking similar to Travels Far was carried on the wind towards them as they approached the mountains, around the area trees seemed to have been uprooted judging from the earthy craters and a path had been beaten into the grass presumably from other faceless marching up and down it.
"We are close, Crown of Fingers would want to speak with you I think. Remarked Travels Far

Kua contemplated these words for a moment. "I see..."
She gently put a hand on the closest thing the faceless had to a shoulder.
"It's ok. I am not like my kind either. I am also different. But as long as we understand that we are different from each other, we are alike in a way that matters the most."
The closer they got to the base of the mountain, the more Kua spotted the environmental changes that the faceless were making. Finally, something clicked.
"Oh, I get it. You are kind of like bugs. Like ants and termites. But you are very big and very nice for ants and termites. Ants can be very mean. I think you would have eaten me if you were like a big ant. Do you have a big nest? Is the Crown of Fingers your queen? Or king? Or something in between?" Because her last few words rhymed, she spoke them with a slight sing-song quality of diction. This seemed to amuse her.

The idea of comparing Crown of Fingers to royalty amused Travels Far prompting a croaking with a short rhythm akin to laughter.
"We were compared to bugs before this." Somberly remarked Turns Pages reminiscing on the empire, the memories seemed clearer and strangely awful than before landfall. "The old world was unusual. I do not think you would have liked it. Now we simply do whatever helps us survive."
As the colony came into view a multitude of faceless could be seen with much more overtly inhuman body shapes compared to Travels Far, some were hauling bits of the beached ship, some were dragging trees and other plants onto a large pile and others were milling about slotting broken branches or fistfuls of leaves and grass into orifices opening up in their flesh.
"Stay close." Cautioned Travels Far as they wandered over to the growing pile of ship scrap which the three legged homunclus Crown of Fingers was overseeing, flanked by the rotund form of Turns Pages who's golden cloak swayed idly in the breeze.

Kua legitimately had to resist the urge to run up to each new faceless form and get a better look. Their bodies were all fascinating. Her own world, which was just as bizarre and magical as any other fantastic realm, had no analog for the giant homunculi. Even slimes, which weren't even made of what one considered flesh, were somehow less strange than these things (which were a bit fleshy).
She had to remind herself, intellectually, that she was surrounded by dangerous creatures with who-knew-what kind of abilities, and that she had no magic to defend herself with. Of course, she nodded and would heed Travel's Far's warning.
She was tempted to pull out her journal and start taking notes. But despite her lack of fear, she figured decorum would require her full attention. She took a deep breath, preparing with all her might to be serious.
They actually look like fingers. Can it waggle them around? I wonder if I could teach it to play the flute with its head.
The thought made her unconsciously smile.

At the top of the spire are eight fully functional fingers. No visible eyes, ears, nose or mouth.
Equipment: A 10ft pole comprised of tough wood with homunculus carapace on both ends
Skills and Abilities: Due to their alien biology their internal antenna allows them to perceive the world based entirely on waves, airwaves for shape and sound and lightwaves for colour as well as other wavelengths but I doubt anyone's going be using radios or microwaves, another trait shared by all faceless is their ability to learn voraciously, they are capable of learning by observation, mimicking activities, reading, hearing and eating things, furthermore they are capable of growing new body parts to solve problems though this needs time to analyse the problem, gather and consume organic material and then grow the part the process can take up to days depending on the size and complexity of the part. Their carapace plating is completely disposable and can be safely removed if damaged to a point where it is no longer useful. Faceless also struggle to feel pain which helps when they remove parts of themselves to upgrade or replace thus is due to their decentralised nervous system. Furthermore the faceless can safely eat and digest any organic matter even if it's horribly rotten as they are naturally immune to infections due to their tendency to simply devour whatever's infecting them. Crown of Fingers can expel a stream stream of corrosive acids a short distance and can of course grip things with it's decorative crown.

Travels Far traded words with Crown of Fingers in the croaking tounge of the faceless before gesturing to Kua, who until then had gone unnoticed by Crown of Fingers, however one of Turns Pages eyes was following the bipedal trueborn.
Crown of Fingers lowered themselves somewhat and spoke to the elf with a voice that sounded as if it had been hewn from stone.
"Greeting Trueborn. I Crown of Fingers. Who you and why here?" Asked the overseer as their fingers curled in curiosity at the sight of such a creature.

It can waggle them!
She grinned and bowed her head.
"My name is Kua Redford. I was a soldier from a far away place. I came because... Well, I didn't come here on purpose."
Her expression changed suddenly. She appeared worried. Then she fell into a sort of sad resolution.
She pointed behind her into the sky. "I fell from above into the water. There was an evil man. He tried to spread a bad thing everywhere, even other worlds. I tried to bring him to a place with lava, where we would burn. But we came here instead. The bad thing disappeared. I guess magic doesn't like this world. I grabbed him before we fell in the water. The fall killed him."
She turned to Travel's Far guiltily. She neglected to tell it that she had taken a life before meeting it. "I am strange. They did not want me to be a soldier. But I wanted to be... a piece of whole, too."

"Guilt hangs over you like flies, know this every faceless here judge not. Cannot do so."
Crown of Fingers knew that they weren't the best at comforting trueborn yet they felt as if the truth would be better than a nest of half truths and hidden knowledge.
"You tried to stop bad thing from spreading, you did well you did better than all here."
The larger cloak wearing faceless made a few vocalisations.
"Turns Pages saying trueborn word for people like you is hero."

Kua beamed. The Crown of Finger's words brought relief.
"To be a hero, that is my dream. But it is not easy. You see, I am very strange. I do not fear the things I should. And while that is a blessing, it is also a curse. There are trueborn who see the blessing, and some who see the curse." She found herself liking the term trueborn, even though she didn't really understand the context. There were many different races in her world, but there wasn't a good general term for them all as a collective.
Kua pulled out her little book. "I have written things to help me. I can show you if you'd like. I also want to know more about your people. Travels Far tells me you were likened to bugs. Are you the queen? Or... king?" She cocked her head curiously.

"I not rule" Answered Crown of Fingers. "I give orders, I oversee work, but I not rule, old masters ruled."
Crown of Fingers paused and contemplated thinking on the idea of being likened to bugs.
"I not think anyone thought of faceless as bugs, old masters would use as tools. Trueborn scared see us as weapons. Trueborn are right. Fought for long...too long saw too much."

Kua felt a little guilty, though for an unexpected reason. It was normal for trueborn to fear the faceless. And she let herself be brought right into their lair. It hurt to remember why she wasn't normal.
And yet, her lack of instinct had led her to discover that these creatures weren't hostile. They even offered her food.
"Trueborn are right to fear you, but they are also wrong to fear you. It is very strange, how one can be right and wrong at the same time. Ooh, I should write that down."
Kua pulled out a small graphite implement and began writing in her notebook.
"One should fear beings with no faces, but beings with no faces can be gentle and friendly." She dictated as she wrote. "Oh, it depends on their master." She paused for a bit. "Oh oh. One can be right and wrong at the same time." She liked it when she came up with a thought that approximated the sounds of sage advice. Being a sage was almost as admirable a goal as being a hero. Not quite as fun though.
And then, Kua's stomach started to growl.

Biography: A former Slave unsure of it's place in the universe, Crown of Fingers is one of many faceless that was lost by in the mist, they acted as a general construction overseer before the mist however they lack any sense of aesthetics as they used to simply instruct others to instructions. At the time of the flood they and other faceless were in transit to a separate colony.

Turns Pages leaned over towards the elf, watching her write with it's three eyes making quiet sounds in reaction to seeing the graphite etch words into the parchment.
Upon hearing the quiet grumbling of Kua's stomach Crown of Fingers turned to face Turns Pages before having a conversation back and forth in their strange language.
"You say you strange." Finally spoke Crown of Fingers after a while. "Eat like regular trueborn or eat like other thing?"

Kua Redford
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 104

Kua's face scrunched up with embarrassment. "I guess I'm not that strange. I eat like a regular trueborn. Oh, but I do have this."
She pulled out a pouch of herbs she had shown Travel's Far earlier. "I have to drink tea made from certain plants once in a while, for my heart. I have enough for a few days but I will have to find more soon, and I don't know the plants on this island very well."
(Crown of Fingers would probably have no way of knowing that her medicine was a sort of vasodilator to help increase blood flow.)
"I want to help your people now. Since I am separate from my whole, maybe I can be part of your whole for a while."

A sting of panic rung through Crown of Fingers like a neurotoxin, this person needed special medicines? How were they meant to get that? Creating a structure or disassembling a ship was simple, easy, medicine was an alien concept to them. They would have to check what little information they had from the empire to see if they could learn anything of value.
"Not know plants well either, faceless eat any plants. Turns Pages say Trueborn need eat special food from fire yes. We make you fire and flesh food, this is good yes?"
Medicine was not an issue that could be solved at the moment food was simpler, they weren't exactly lacking flesh and most faceless would be willing to part with some to help another.
"You stay with us as you like, we no order, old masters order. Old masters evil." Crown of Fingers explained attempting to give reassurance to the Trueborn in front of it.
