"Hm." Luci watches the river as they walk, then the trees. A moth flutters by her head. "Honestly? I think I understand that. I, uh." She frowns, staring straight ahead, deep in thought. How much did she want to share with this stranger? "I had a... complicated job. But I guess it was my life for a while. It was all I knew, and I thought it was all I'd ever know. But now that it's over? I'm starting to wonder. Maybe I could have done something different. Maybe I can do something different. The end of the world is just a lot to take in, I guess." Hævys is silent for a moment, slowing down for a few paces. "We all have scars and regrets from our past." She says to Luci. "And even if we try to hide them, the effects they have on you show. But they can't stop you from moving on, and living your life without them controlling you. Hindering you yes, but not controlling you." She speeds back up to her former pace, sighing. Seeing as how this girl was following her, and it would likely be a while before they find a settlement(if they even do), it would be better to know at least the bare minimum about her. "Who are you, anyways?" "Oh." She smiles sheepishly. "Probably should have started with that." "I'm Luci. Just Luci, honestly; I've never had another name that mattered. You?"

Age: Nearing her mid-30s
Appearance: She has a dark brown, bordering on black head of hair, kept short, not reaching halfway down her neck. Her skin is a darker tan-ish shade, with grey eyes. Standing around 5'10", she has a rugged frame, used to heavy labor and working in the forge. She usually wears a pair of loose fitting pants, with a snug cloth wrap covering up her chest. While in the forge, she wears a black smith's apron as well. While her pants usually covers it, there is a large indent into her skin on her thigh, as if part of the skin had been sheared off of that area, a few layers deep.
Equipment: While a smith before she got here, most of her equipment couldn't be carried during the flood. She's lucky she got out with a few forging hammers and a pair of tongs for handling hot metal, as well as her trusty pata(a type of sword-gauntlet), for if someone attempts to cross her or steal her wares.
Skills and Abilities: A skilled blacksmith, focusing on weapons and armor, with some skill also with jewelry and building materials such as hinges or nails. As well as this, she is skilled in the magics of enchanting her wares while creating them, giving enchantments of durability, of good health, or other small enchantments to make using them easier. However, she could only do this for things she was forging, not finished works, and even then she currently refuses to enchant her works. As well as this, although she currently refuses to do it as well, she can give people permanent marks on their skin, that would not wash off no matter what, and even enchant those.
Biography: A skilled smith from a young age, Hævys loved to create. She would work with her father in his forge, learning his craft, even if many others said she couldn't, or that she shouldn't and she should be proper. Naturally, Hævys wanted to prove them wrong. After learning all she could from her father, she travelled her land, looking for the best smiths to teach her what her father could not. Eventually she'd stumble on a smith who taught her many other talents, including, most importantly, the art of enchanted forging. Upon returning home and beginning her own work, she was soon summoned to the capital, to work towards making equipment for the army. Here, she would gain the epithet of Magesmith.
As well as working for the army, she would open a small business on the side, giving people permanent marks on their skin in any design they chose, a skill she picked up on her travels. However, one day she would experiment(with a willing participant) on attempting to enchant her marks. It was a success, and word soon reached the king. Immediately, she was given a new position with the prison. She would use her marking ability to give prisoners permanent enchanted marks, ones that would seal any magical ability they possessed, as well as teaching others to do the same.
However, soon, it became apparent that many of these prisoners did not deserve their punishment, nor prison time at all. Many people were sentenced to this not only for crimes, but for things outside of their control and for speaking out against the war. Hævys could not take this, speaking out against it. As a result, she was branded a criminal and given one of the marks she taught others to make, sealing her magic as she was thrown in prison.
Eventually, she would escape, and cut the mark off of her body, barely surviving with the bloodloss and possible infection. Even though she was no longer sealed, she refused to make another mark for anybody, and refused to enchant anything anymore. She refused her old epithet and became simply Hævys Bladesmith, and opening a small, struggling smithy for a short time, before the flood hit.

She responds, averting her eyes down as she walked forwards. "Hævys Bladesmith." "Bladesmith," Luci repeats, Hævys's earlier comments coming to mind. "That sounds straightforwards. I like it." She shades her eyes, looking for any sign of nearby civilization. Surely they'd be able to see some of the buildings over the trees... there were people here, right?

As the two conversed, a chilly wind rustled the trees around them. Though the trees were starting to bud, winter had not yet released its grasp on this land. As if to spite it, the sun beamed down warm and strong, battling the cold air.
In the distance, just down the river, something stood out among all the browns and the young greens of the landscape: a figure, pale, but dressed in purple skirts. With a gloved hand, it waved at both women, as though beckoning them to come close.
And then it walked into the woods, disappearing in the brush.

Hævys narrowed her eyes at the figure as a shiver ran down her spine. Whether this was the chill in the air or the unsettling feeling from the figure was something that eluded her. She unhooked the pata from her waist and dawned it on her right arm as she shuffles in that direction, following towards the strange person against her better judgement. "Did you see that?" She asks Luci. "Something doesn't feel right here..."

"Something doesn't feel right here..." Luci nods. She had fallen into a ready stance without realizing it, and slowly forces herself to relax. "Well, maaaaaaybe she's just showing us back to town? She could be mute, right? There's an explanation to this that doesn't involve her being a forest spirit out to get us, I'm sure. Lots of them, even." She trots after Hævys, catching up after her momentary pause. "Either way, we should see where she wants to lead us. It's not like we have anywhere else to go, right?" She shrugs.

As the two women followed, they would find themselves walking into a mossy grove filled with weeping willows, their leaves feathering their skin as they walked by. The river slowed here, rounding out into a deep pool lined with vibrant green seagrass. Fish of all colors darted in and out of it below, some no bigger than one's fingernail, while others were longer than their arms outstretched. A soft breeze flowed through the grove, asking the willow leaves to dance on the water's surface. The wind would grow until it tousled the hair of the two lost adventurers, stirred up the loose flower petals and leaves, obscured their vision for brief moments in which the pale figure in purple could be seen. There was a hum in that wind, soft and motherly. It felt like a warm fireplace, smelled of buttered pastries, and looked like home. No sooner had the wave of nostalgia washed over them, was it gone, ebbing away as a tide would. There was no trace of the figure, nor could one be certain of the direction it went, but there wasn't nothing.Floating down from the trees, flipping through the air in little loops, was a piece of paper. It grained with age, but it was well taken care of, devoid of any rips, tears, or fraying. If one of them were to catch it, they would read the following: To the one who receives this, use this knowledge well. This is the first page of a long journey: the saga of the Little Whittle Witches.

Speak them and test thyself Luci snatches the page from the air, distracted from the disappearing figure and the strange feeling the wind had brought about. Sparing a glance to Hævys, she skims over the page, mumbling as she goes. She flips it over, reading the back, and can only turn it over once more, reading more closely this time. "Your first lesson is to observe the earth..." she repeats, looking up at Hævys. "Do you have any experience in magic?" she asks. Even if she had spent her life molded by it, she had never really had the time to study magic. There was only so much studying required to launch sparkling beams from her hands. Incantations and rituals were far beyond her. Hævys Bladesmith

Hævys furrows her brow, quickly looking around for the figure that lost before accepting relatively quickly that she'd lost whoever it was. "All too much." She addresses Luci quietly, her open hand falling to her thigh, grazing the side of the leg she put less weight on.
"Let me see that paper." She peers at the text on the paper, reading the incantation through the dappled light. In her mind her curiosity at the situation fought against her sense of caution, trying to decide what to do here.
Hævys half-limps over to the nearby pool, watching the fish scatter as she approached. She dips a finger into the water and tastes it, her face scrunching at the taste as it confirms its salt content. "It isn't as high as the sea, but there's salt in this water." She relays to Luci. "I'm not sure if that would affect the quality of the spell the same way steel quality does, but it can only be so good in general since its not integral, if you want to try it." She stands back up, scanning for that figure again. "If you have something to test it on that is. If not...I guess I could risk a hammer. Not like I can do much with it without a forge."

"Test... what exactly?" Luci scans over the page again, trying to make sense of it. "Some sort of... warding spell? Seems like a roundabout way to say it." Even as she speaks, though, her mind is wandering in a different direction. Her scarf's magic was fading... maybe it was worth trying something new. "Yeah. Yeah, let's try this." Her face sets in determination, and she steps towards the pool. She accepts the hammer, reading over the instructions once more. "Alright, it's not a knife, but..." She dips the hammer in the brackish pool, then holds it out in front of her. "Here goes nothing." "Vu tehil fith."

No sooner was the word spoken did particles of light ignite within the water and separate from it, arranging themselves into a series of runes along the head of the hammer. For now, it seemed to work, but there was no real way to know without testing it. As though to answer the call, something in the bushes to their right rustled. An ooze slithered out from its branches, and a deep growl- or was it a hoarse scream?- reached their ears. Then, quite rapidly, a dark figure tore out of the leaves, dashing toward them on all fours with a bony face and a rotting body falling to pieces as it pounced toward them, no higher than their knees but making up for it with sharp, sabrelike teeth.

Hævys Bladesmith

Roleplay posts: 61

Hævys lets out a startled yell, and with the pata still gripped in her left hand tries to slash at the oncoming demonic corpse, stepping slightly to the side and pivoting on her good leg, trying to get out of its way as it barreled towards them. Afterwards she attempts to shuffle backwards, keeping herself facing towards the monstrous visage as she backed off.

The howl rings in Luci's ears, anticipation coursing through her. She falls into a ready stance even as she turns to face the sound, instinct taking over. She presses one hand to her scarf, feeling the power pulse inside- -then stops. She doesn't have time to think about why, stumbling back to buy herself a few more moments. No, not the scarf... the hammer! Her hand tightens around the hammer as she remembers its weight in her hand, and she brandishes it before her. Her breath catches in her throat, fear opening a pit in her stomach. A fragmented thought about the hammer working properly flashes through her mind as she lunges forwards once more, waving her new weapon at the beast. Hand of the Mist

As the bladesmith swiped at the creature there was nary a cry. The blade plunged deep into the running carcass but found no purchase, only air where muscle and skin should have been. She did manage to redirect it, turning the creature toward Luci, who bashed it on the side of the head with the enchanted hammer. The blow drew a pained whine from it, and the side of its bony face cracked and glowed with the same light that etched the runes on the hammer.
Down, but not out, the creature rose again to lunge at Hævys.
