A relic of a more decadent era, this elaborate tent was originally commissioned by then-Lady Naoki for a theoretical camping trip that alas, never happened. On the outside, it seems small and rather inconspicuous and even has a stylish camouflage print, but the interior is quite spacious. The tent features such amenities as a nice sturdy bed covered in warm furs, a kitchenette & a stove, rugs all over the floor, a bookcase stocked with light reading, and even a cute little vanity.

Later on, just as the sun is beginning to set, Naoki’s tent is erected. It was substantially easier to set up than the command tent, so much so that Naoki insisted on doing most of it herself. (The most manual labor she’s done in years.) Looking at it, the tent leans a bit to the side, but she doubts it’ll come down and the enchantment should still work fine. All that’s left is to pull this string on the front, and…
The flaps of the tent pull themselves to the side before her, revealing the interior for the first time. Naoki’s mouth forms a small ‘o’ as she ducks her head to step inside. The interior is lopsided in the same way as the exterior but seems fine otherwise. There’s the bed, the table, the kitchenette, the stove, the bookshelf, and even a little mat for boots. The rugs on the floor add to the coziness, but what it’s really missing is a fireplace. ... The stove, perhaps? She’ll see about that in a minute.
“It’s not quite as nice as my cabin, but not bad for a leftover that was collecting dust in the hold for years,” Naoki supposes. “Come in and shut the flaps, I don’t think there’s anything more to be done tonight.”
Plopping down in one of the seats, she starts undoing the clasps on her boots. “Not bad for a first day’s landing, either. Got a lot of tents set up, a lot of equipment ashore, and hopefully, some of those hunting parties will bring back something nice to eat soon.”
Striking her constant companion of the past day with a look, Naoki hums. “What do you think, Alden? About anything. You’ve been quiet.”

Age: 53(?)
Appearance: The reference image is a commissioned piece and is accurate.
Alden is 6 even, with shoulder-length messy black hair, and several days worth of beard stubble. He is handsome, with a powerful jaw, mid-set cheekbones, and a perpetual grin that makes him seem younger than he really is. His bright green eyes, constantly sparkle with barely contained mirth. He has the lithe well-muscled body of a swordsman, and he moves with considerable grace and dexterity.
If one were to do a more thorough examination of Alden's eyes they may notice a further detail. Around the outside edge of his iris, there's an intricate series of minuscule grey runes.
Underneath his shirt, Alden's skin is a mass of scar tissue. Starting from just below his neckline, there is very little space that does not sport some relic of a past injury. A particularly observant person may also note that among these scars, some are a bright scarlet. These scarlet scars form an intricate series of runes hiding amidst the rest of the scars.
-------------------------------------------
Equipment: Alden's general loadout when he goes fighting consists of the following:
A twin set of enchanted shortswords. The simple straight blades are unnatural dark, absorbing rather than reflecting light. Giving the enchanted steel an appearance closer to cold iron. The guard has the Isran sun emblem emblazoned in a medallion shape just above the guard, which is wrapped in simple leather. The enchantments increase their sharpness and durability, as well as being able to ignite the blood of anything that he has pierced with either blade.
Numerous braces and hidden throwing knives all over his body. At one point, these were also enchanted but when the calamity struck he didn't have time to grab his original set. So these are all well-made but ultimately mundane weapons. Still, with his strength and skill, they can be quite deadly.
Unfortunately, at present, he is also missing his armour. His preferred armour is leather dyed in mottled black and greys, with strike plates sewn between layers for added protection. His old set was also enchanted for increased protection from physical and magical attacks.
-------------------------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Alden is, for lack of a better term, a weapon master. He has been trained to use almost any weapon you can think to name. Relentless daily training with each, with extraordinarily demanding expectations on performance and harsh incentives for failure giving a level of skill with most of them that make him formidable.
However, his preferred style involves twin short swords. While he is skilled with all of his weapons thanks to training, he discovered a natural talent with the blade. His level of skill when wielding his short swords is on another level entirely, nearly transcendent in his skill.
On top of that, he is a living magical enchantment. Carved into his body are a variety of runes that grant him numerous innate abilities. He is inhumanly strong, around three to four times stronger than a man in a similar state of physical fitness would be. This also applies to his endurance, speed, reflexes, and other physical traits. He also has regenerative abilities exceeding human normal, able to heal from even broken bones in a matter of days rather than weeks.
In addition, he is immune to most poisons and resistant to the rest. The runes etched into his eyes ensure he can see the same no matter the level of light and reveal magical auras to him. Runes along his back make him impossible to scry on directly and provide him a measure of resistance to magical attack. This, combined with training, also makes him immune to magical mental influence. Finally, runes on his feet dampen any sound he might make taking his already considerable stealth abilities to another level entirely.
Speaking of his training also included all of the skills one would think an Assassin should have. He knows how to mix poisons, move without being seen or making noise, scale walls, lie or disguise himself, pick locks, pick pockets, just for starters. He is also quite skilled at clerical work and he has some diplomacy ability after thirty years leading the Sun Marshals.
Beyond all of this, Alden also possesses an incredible amount of willpower. If Alden decides that he will do something, there is very little that can stop him from doing it. In fact, at present, the only thing that could deter him from a course of action is Captain Naoki. The former Empress is the only person he has any loyalty to and he often values her judgement on matters above his own.
-------------------------------------------
Biography: Alden was born to a small farming family in an out-of-the-way village. His parents named him Toan and until he was five his destiny was most likely to live and die on the same farm he was born. However, that all changed when Pride arrived.
The leader of a criminal group known as The Set, Pride offered his parents a sum of money that would make any poor farmer's heart stop. Enough money to change their lives forever and all he wanted was Alden, one of nearly a dozen children. A child that wasn't even old enough to help with chores around the farm yet. And the man as so nice, he wanted a ward that he could train to be a retainer how bad of a life could that be?
The answer to that question was basically Hell. Pride was a potent alchemist, enchanter, and scholar and he had but one goal in mind. To create a superior warrior. Alden was subjected to hellish daily training along with six other children. Forced to learn to fight with every weapon, against any foe, in any condition. His limbs were broken deliberately and he was forced to continue to fight and train in constant agony. And this was among the mildest of the ways he was trained.
The culmination of the training came when he was twelve. When he and the six other children were locked in a room and told that the only one who got to leave... was the only one to survive. Of course, surviving was hardly a reward.
Once Pride had only the strongest of the children left he proceeded to the next step of his plan. Alden's memories and identity were seared away as Pride carved runes into his flesh and his very soul. Transforming the young man into a living magical artifact and keeping him on a drug that suppressed all of his emotions.
From there Alden became the new Wrath of the set, a weapon meant only to slay those he was told to. That may have been all he would be but Pride made a miscalculation, Alden's runes helped him to build an immunity to the dosage meant to keep his emotions in check, a weakness made worse by Pride having let him keep his anger thinking it would make him a better weapon. Eventually, events conspired and Alden snapped when the only member of The Set to be kind to him, Sloth, was killed for threatening to expose Pride.
Alden, driven into a deeper rage than ever before killed Envy, Lust, Gluttony, and even disembowelled Pride. Greed manage to escape and Alden slaughtered everything in his path trying to catch the man. Eventually succeeding in his goal. Bereft of a target for his rage and the chase having left him in the middle of nowhere Alden finally collapsed the trauma and coming off of the dosage causing him to bury most of his memories.
He wound up in Isra where his talents and skill soon earned him the eye of the then, criminal Madam Naoki. She recruited him as one of her enforcers a role he continued as her power expanded and grew until she finally became Empress. His reward for his loyalty? Appointment to the head of The Sun Marshals her special police force, effectively making him her right-hand man.
During this time he also uncovered his own past and learned that Pride had survived, the man had made preparations for such an eventuality and his death only saw his soul moving to a phylactery as he became a lich.
Pride created a new Set, this time making each member just as he made Alden. Eventually, this culminated in Pride attacking Isra and his eventual, final defeat.
Decades have passed since that time and Alden, whose power kept him at his prime for years continued to serve Isra until the new calamity took him to The Island of Mists, his empress reduced to a captain and he now serving as her first mate.

Alden had been quiet as was often the case when he was asked to fulfill the role of bodyguard. After all, if he was going to shadow her there was little enough for him to add to conversations. He better served as a silent deterrent and by carefully listening and observing those that spoke to Naoki and those trying to avoid her interest.
Ducking his head slightly he enters the tent looking around curiously. While the magic of the mists seemed to dampen the power of most magi thus far enchanted items from the old world seemed to be functioning more or less as they were intended to. Which was likely why his own abilities seemed to be around the same level they had been. He'd found he could no longer push and draw out more strength but the basic functionality was all intact.
"Would you like my thoughts as First Mate or as your friend first?"
He says in response to the question. They were on another world and he was not the Alden she'd know, nor was she the Naoki he'd known. Yet both were similar enough to the other's that they had fallen back into familiar roles. Alden assuming that she would want both sets of thoughts but knowing the other in which she requested them would dictate the full tone of the conversation.

“Well,” Naoki supposes, pulling off one boot, “I think I can guess what First Mate Alden thinks — and I think you can guess how much of that I already know, so let’s have that first to get it out of the way.”
The idea that this Alden isn’t the same Alden she’d known isn’t something that sits particularly well with Naoki. It raises a lot of questions, not just about the nature of existence and what-have-you, but more troublesome ones, like ‘Is this her friend?’. Alden is, sure, and this isn’t... not Alden, but... Many of the fond memories she shares with Alden have to do with his children, and this Alden hasn’t had children, which makes him different. And it begs the question, what memories does he have that he would call her friend? Different ones, certainly, which is the part that’s strange.
“You can spare me the part about how the ‘colony’ here has grim prospects,” she adds. “That’s the part I know.”

"I wasn't going to," Alden says with a slight grin at that implication. "I would say prospects are bright given the circumstance. Morale largely seems to be on the rise with the discovery of land and that was among our biggest dangers." Low morale caused far more problems than any other issue as it magnified all other issues. "For the moment I'd say the biggest danger we have right now is that we don't know when we are in the season yet or if this place even has seasons. If winter happens upon us before we are ready that could be bad but seeing food and shelter are our biggest priorities right now, there is not much more we can do on that front."
Scratching his chin in consideration he reflects on some of the conversations he'd overheard on the beach. "So far as it goes most everyone just seemed eager to get started. If that Kobold can manage to shift even some stone that would be a huge headstart on some more permanent and defensible structures. The hunting party should be fine I say mostly good spirits there and I know the Fletcher to be competent. The horned one, Shyv'Ahna, might be a dissident. She had some issues on the ship according to the Quartermaster, nothing major thus far but worth keeping an eye on just in case."
With that, he inclines his head indicating he'd said his piece for now.

Naoki hums and considers what Alden has to say. “Given the circumstances,” she supposes. Many things would be better than being stuck on the ship any longer, and this is one of them.
“Winter could be bad, why, because you didn’t bring your coat?” Chuckling a bit to herself, Naoki stands. Nobody has ever accused her of being funny, but he raises a good point: if winter rolled around Alden would probably put on a shirt, which would be bad. What he said about the others doesn’t stick to Naoki. She nods along, but she’d had many of the same thoughts herself and doesn’t have much more to say about them.
Crossing over to the kitchenette, Naoki begins rooting around in the drawers there. “There’s some food in here,” she remarks. Though, judging by the way her nose scrunches and ears fold back, it might not all be very fresh. That drawer is closed, but she keeps looking.
“Ah-ha, here we go.” From one of the drawers, Naoki extracts a kettle and a box of teabags. “You like tea?” Truly, she doesn’t remember ever offering Alden tea, it never came up. She’d like some tea, though, so she up-ends her waterskin into the kettle and holds it there as it begins to drain. “You could start the fire,” she adds, gesturing to the stove.

"I don't need a coat." Alden observes wryly, which wasn't strictly speaking, true. He could certainly survive longer than most without one but he'd die of exposure eventually. Even magic couldn't stave off the chill forever. "However, you and the rest of the crew will need them." He pauses and then adds. "Though I suppose if anyone were to have brought one along it would be you as you seem to have remembered your house." He observes in the same wry tone chuckling lightly.
The tent was noticeably larger than it should be and contained a few things that he hadn't known they had in storage. Moving over to the small stove he gets to loading it with wood and tinder, sparking it by the expedience of drawing one of his swords and driving it into the wood. What lingering moisture was left within the material sparking to live and setting aflame creating a rather large fire almost instantly.
"I could start a fire and I do like tea and would enjoy a cup if that was an offer."
He observes as he closes the grate. It hadn't exactly been harder to anticipate what she was looking for. Comfy sweaters and warm beverages were a Naoki staple.

“I wish!” Naoki replies emphatically. “If I had even a third of my Chalet…!” Trailing off, she tsks to herself. The majority of The Chalet’s bathrooms were larger than this, to speak nothing of her closets.
When Alden starts the fire in the manner he does, this startles Naoki, and she takes a half-step back. She was unaware that his sword lit shit on fire. Whether this is something specific to new!Alden or just something she’d never bore witness to, she’s unsure. Beats looking around for the firestarter, though, and she hums her amusement.
Having filled the kettle with the contents of her waterskin, Naoki sets the former atop the stove and places the latter on the counter to refill later. It’s joined there by her spyglass, coinpurse, and the pouch of gemstones that’s always at her hip. Unburdened of her kit as such, Naoki plops down into one of the chairs, as the water will take some time to boil.
Looking around at the relatively meager contents of the tent, she sighs. “It’s a lot less to worry about, I suppose.”
“And maybe that’s a good thing,” she continues, reflexively aiming for a silver lining. “A lot of my problems related to the size and complexity of Old Isra, but this promises to be a simpler life. It’ll take ages to repopulate back up to a size where I’ll have to start worrying about those sorts of problems again.”
“Say, tell me Alden,” she begins, fixing him with a look, “What bothered you in the old world? Something you hope might be different now, perhaps.”

It wasn't often old!Alden had been called upon to start fires for her and if he had, he would have had easy access to more practical means then his swords. But the blades were, more or less, identical to the ones old!Alden had made by the Black Toward and the Red Witch whom had once served as its enchanter.
With the kettle on Alden opts to join her in sitting. Thus far the conversation had an entirely casual tone so he saw no reason to continue to stand. Besides, easier on both their necks.
"Which I suppose we will both live to see." He says with a soft chuckle. His own runes didn't make him immortal but he'd live a long, long time. A few generations at the very least, in the time he'd known Naoki she'd shown no signs of aging and she was talking about personally having to deal with things once they returned to that size. "Who knows, maybe by that time you won't want or need to worry about it all anymore. I imagine a lot can change in a hundred odd years."
Naoki's question is met with an arched eyebrow. "Hrm, for myself? Not much but I was in a rather privileged position." He cocks his head and considers it for a time. "Though I'll say, I probably enjoyed my time on the ship more than I've enjoyed many days over the last few years. Not that there weren't better days in Isra but standing here I realize I got into a bit of a rut. I've also been thinking on what you told me of the other me, the one with kids. Something I never really considered before. So on a personal level, I suppose I've realized that I was too content with what I had. I hope to try more things in this world, helps that I no longer have to do paperwork I suppose. But that is on a personal level."
Stroking his chin he continues to think. "As for how we do things at large. I don't know. Were their improvements that could have been made to the system? Yes, no system is perfect. Could I point at one specific problem and give you a solution that I could guarantee would work? I don't think so. I think our best bet is to simply... focus on creating the best new nation we can for everyone. Try to ensure that as we build up we continue to provide for them all, do our best to try and stop things like the ghettos before they even happen if we can. What else can we do on the grand scale?"

Alden has a bit to say, and Naoki is quiet as she listens. It’s the most she's been able to tease out of him in a while, and it’s always interesting to hear Alden articulate his thoughts. At his suggestion that at some point, she won’t ‘want or need’ to worry about matters of state, Naoki only smiles in mock pain. She’ll believe that when she sees it.
Listening to what he has to say on the construction of the nation, Naoki shrugs, waving a hand. “We’ll need to build a lot of houses, yes, but that’s nothing new. I’ve successfully built a nation once before, I can do it again. It wasn’t my taxation processes that brought about the cataclysm, I don’t think.” Humming, she considers and decides: probably not. She’s not put much thought into grand-scale revisions because she doesn’t think she needs to. Does she? Maybe, but, again, she shrugs.
“But too content with what you had, hm?” She humms again. “Without children, without paperwork, and without enemies of the state to dispose of in the dead of night…” She tsks, teasingly. “You will have to find something new to do, won’t you. I could—”
Cutting herself off mid-sentence, Naoki comes to a realization.
“Wait, wait, wait a minute,” she says, with a sudden change in tone, standing and turning to point an accusatory finger at Alden. “If you’ve not any children and no partner, that means I’ve— or rather, the-alternate-version-of-me-that-you-know, has already slept with you, and probably has been for years, hasn’t she (the lucky bitch)?”
Sitting down, Naoki turns away, three shades redder than usual.
“I don’t know how I feel about that,” she admits. “I should have realized sooner.”

Naoki may not see it in herself but she would see signs of it in Alden. Freed of the responsibility of managing a branch of government he was reveling in having less people to oversee. He wasn't sure if he would want to take up his old role within the new government once things were settled. In these early days though he would continue on as her right hand, after that maybe he would just retired to bodyguard? Something like that maybe. a While she is considering things Alden interjects. "You did at that but that was when we could import goods. We are starting from scratch this time." Isra had been built on a trade road and had become a trade hub, New Isra would doubtless become the same in time but there were no other settlements large enough to be producing surplus yet. No established mines, forestry yards, farms, no anything.
However, as Alden freely admitted. "But I have no doubt you will succeed, just don't feel the need to try and improve my moral by sugar coating things." Not that he thought she was doing that necessarily but he would make the offer. That done she starts into her realization of something and when she was finished he blinked in surprise.
"Really?" He snorts in amusement at that. "I find that rather surprising all things considered." The grin on his face and the amusement dancing in his eyes told her that she had, indeed, correctly guessed on that subject. "Honestly, I was surprised you hadn't asked at any point during the trip, I just assumed that you were too focused on the problem." He shrugs his shoulders as he fights back laughter at her reaction to all this.

“It is surprising!” Naoki agrees, “For years you were off-limits, with a partner and children and that, and I respected that. I never laid a lewd finger on you. We were friends, I babysat your children, they called me ‘Auntie Naoki’. I gave them gifts at Yuletide and tours of The Citadel!” Gesturing emphatically, the fond memories are easy to see in the tone of her voice and the spaces between words.
“And the world ends and they're not here and now you roll up,” she continues, jabbing a finger at Alden’s chest, “All smug and shirtless, having dodged having the children at all, and rather having spent the last however-many-years bending an alternate version of myself over a desk every Wednesday after the finances are done.” Naoki’s blush, which had been abating, returns with that mental image.
“I’m pleased,” she adds, re-seating herself for the umpteenth time to compose herself. “Don’t misunderstand. I know I’ve been missing out and you make some incredibly good-looking children. But at the same time, also understand that it’s more than a little bit strange for me to know, A, that alternate worlds exist(ed?) in such a manner, but also B, that you know every inch of me, what I like and how I like it, probably all of it, but the most I’ve ever done with you is, what, share a platonic hug? … With your pants on, even.”
That sounds like a prompt, but Naoki stands, as the teapot has begun to whistle. She removes it from the stove, grabs a coaster, some teacups, saucers, and brings the lot over to the table. She has to go back for the tea, and flips through the selection on the way back.
“Ooo, Keemun. I like that. Here,” she says, passing the box to Alden for him to make a selection while she pours the water.

That information surprised him quite a bit. He had a hard time imagining Naoki letting anyone call her Auntie but he supposed if he had kids, that is what she would have been to him. The thought of it actually makes him chuckle. The Empress of Isra babysitting a gaggle of children. Another reason for him to want to try different things, he couldn't really imagine what it would be like to have kids but he kind of wanted to find out now.
Alden looks down at his chest as she jabs a finger at it. He'd forgotten he'd taken his shirt off because he'd gotten it soaked. It was hung up to dry... back on the depravity. He should probably raid his own limited clothing supply for another. They'd managed to scrounge a few uniforms that were roughly in his size from the general stores of the ship. "It was Thursdays and not always on your desk but yes, you have the gist," Alden says in a voice that suggests he is either making a joke or being entirely serious and it was hard to tell since he wasn't giving it away.
Rather than immediately commenting on how much of her body he knew he waited as she fetched the tea boxes. Sorting through them he settles on a box of Green Tea, placing his leaves into the water to leave them to steep. "It is a bit strange." He agrees. "To find out that there are alternate timelines. I imagine it is entirely possible that everyone but the people you already had on the Depravity is from such timelines." He strokes his chin then dismisses it, they would find out the ramifications of that first hand no need to dwell on the possibilities. "But yes, I do know every inch of you. There was one particularly memorable night at the Chateau where we decided I wasn't allowed to use my hands. It lent itself quite well to learning you quite thoroughly." He says with a slight grin, he wasn't used to being the one able to make her blush so he was finding a bit of amusement in that.

“I can’t imagine what would possess me to do finances on Thursday, but fair enough,” Naoki supposes, arranging her tea leaves.
What he tells her next doesn’t have as much of an effect as may have been intended: she simply nods along. “That does sound like me,” she agrees, stirring the steaming hot water with a pinky. “Which... saves me having to teach you, I suppose, but at the same time, I don’t get to teach you. I must— no, I know that I enjoyed that quite a bit, but alas! The cruel machinations of fate have robbed me of that experience entirely, and for that particular twist, I am not grateful.” She mock-pouts for a moment but doesn't dwell there for more than a second longer.
“Speaking of,” she continues, “My heart, my apologies, and my condolences all go out to the me that I stole you from. I know that if I were me in that situation, and I ended up with the you that I knew, what with the children and all, I wouldn’t appreciate that trade in the least. I would come to appreciate the children in time, but now that I have you all to myself…” Trailing off, Naoki humms in consideration before another thought strikes her.
“Oh, oh!” Excited, she taps the table three times and points to Alden again. “I know what— well, actually,” Naoki rephrases, eyes glistening with devious intent, “As far as you know, I don’t have any tattoos, do I?” It’s a leading question, asked in such a way that suggests that she does, but due to the circumstances involved, that she doubts her alternate-world counterpart does.

Alden

Disappointment, not surprise, is what Alden feels as Naoki quickly regains control of herself. His Naoki had been the furthest thing from a prude and he guessed that this Naoki was much the same though this was the first time they'd travelled into this territory. So while he'd hoped to get a bit more of a rise from her, that she did not blush at his teasing comments was more in line with his past experiences. It was good to know that not everything changed.
"You know yourself well." He inclines his head when the subject of how she would have enjoyed training him is broached. "There was a certain lack of subtlety in your proposition, not surprising considering how dense I was back then. When you, well the other you, realized that I didn't need to take breaks your exact wording was: I am going to enjoy training you." That had been quite the memorable... He'd say afternoon but it had lasted almost into the next morning so whatever you would call that chunk of time.
The idea that the alternative him was now with the Naoki he'd known was certainly interesting. There was a level of symmetry that he could appreciate if it was the case. Though the Naoki he knew could just as well be dead. So could the Alden she'd known. Or they could be in some other reality. Whatever was in those mists certainly had power they couldn't comprehend. "Well, if it was a trade as you speculate then I suppose that makes me your Alden and you my Naoki now. Probably easier on our minds if we think in those terms where possible rather than on the ramifications of multi-dimensional theory and what it all means vis a vie our position within the universe." He notes with a grin right before her next thought strikes her.
"Tattoos?" He says musingly. "No, no tattoos." He says with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "No permanent ones anyway. A few temporary magical seals and there was an artist that gave you a few temporary normal ones at one point so you could see how you felt about them."
