The magic of two peoples filled the air the day the dead were disturbed. The forest thickened with enchantment as they pushed back the ghouls and shadows, graves covered again by the loving magic of the mute queen. Crystals began to sparkle in the sun and the moon in the days and nights afterward, creating for a beautiful scene comprised of the harmony of two clans.

Uma had walked these woods countless times and found her breath taken away by the sight of rainbows splashing the land and the waters. Crystals were there where none had been before, and the feeling of enchantment coiled thick in the air where there was none before. She stared in awe and sank to her knees in the water of the stream, the water warmer than before as if touched by the summer sun while it was yet cool. She skimmed her fingers over the surface of clear water, the fabric of her ceremonial gown soaking up the water to the hips.
She cupped her hands into the water and felt as though she was home in the old world, the vibration of magic humming within the molecules of the water, almost electric in nature. She could not help but giggle softly and watch the light of the full moon cause the ripples to sparkle like the crystals that surrounded her.
Her dark hair, longer now after over a year on the island, seemed to dance as if alive, but only with subtle movements, just as Faisine's hair would. She sipped at the water, let the purity of it wet her mouth. The urge to sing came to her after a minute.
Looking around, she made sure she was still alone first, for she was shy about her voice. When she spotted nobody, a voice so lovely lilted from her, a sweet soprano that filled the air and seemed to make magic. The sparkling increased and fireflies began to dot the surrounding, not just with yellows, but a rainbow of colors.

"So, a part of you is still Dirk, huh?"
Mina knew the entity wouldn't answer. In a way, she was being silly. It had fused with her own soul, so asking it questions was a bit like talking to herself.
Every step she took in the crystalline forest was a gingerly one. She wasn't a powerful mage. She had no business being here. And yet, she felt like magic ought to be able to get to know magic. Bringing her guardian spirit to this place felt a bit like encouraging children to get to know each other at a day care.
Ugh, that's a terrible analogy.
Her eyes darted about insecurely, as if constantly asking for permission. Really, she was the child. At least, she felt like it. A fool who was granted power beyond her understanding, who followed a child's dream and leapt into the world, now surrounded by power which was hopelessly beyond her comprehension.
"Do you like it here, Dirk? Uh, me?"
The spirit didn't answer, again. It was visible, a shimmering specter whose form refracted the mystic glow of the crystals, a walking mirage. It didn't react, didn't articulate its limbs. It was like a statue being pulled gently along a friction-less plane of air. It was beautiful in its own way, like a glass sculpture.
"I like it here." She replied to herself and chuckled.

The sound of her song would probably soon reach Mina's ears the more the girl advanced into the area. Fireflies started to circle Mina and it was as if they started to urge her toward the enchanting sound that was stirring the very wind subtly. The sound of the birds and the animals seemed to accompany the feeling of enchantment. She stirred the water around her gently with her hands, oblivious for the moment as to the other nearing.

At first the singing unnerved Mina.
Uh oh, did I die and go to heaven? Is this a trap? Am I gonna get pulled into a siren's nest?
She checked herself and her senses. She also examined the fireflies carefully. She realized she wasn't being compelled to follow the song, meaning it probably wasn't a supernatural trap.
I really gotta learn to relax.
Mina and her guardian followed the trail of fireflies until she spotted the source of the melodious tones.
This place reacts to music? It made sense. The Eygor Mjok had brought out the spirit of the forest in the first place with chanting and drums, and the calls of the Usqueans solidified the magic, bringing this place to life.
Mina had a funny idea. She decided to try singing along. She had been too embarrassed to join the Eygor Mjok's procession, but with just one other person here, she wouldn't feel as judged.
Mina started to sing, closely matching Uma as much as possible. Her voice wasn't quite as beautiful as Uma's, but it was clean, clear, and youthful. She'd been told she had some talent in the past, but singing in public was difficult for her.

She wasn't sure how to react. The woman jumped and whirled around, fumbling over the words of the spell she had been weaving through song like Faisine was able to do. She swallowed and looked away. Uma turned so her flaming cheeks could not be seen from where she was in relation to the girl and her companion animal. Uma was used to being alone for the most part and had found herself in the forest where the crystals were in order to find solitude.
She was slightly disappointed when the person wasn't the man who she was starting to grow fond of despite not wanting that kind of thing in her life. But she wouldn't bring that disappointment up with the young lady, she wasn't the one causing such confusion within the half fae who was so surrounded by fireflies and sparkling crystals.
She kind of fidgeted with the hem of her skirt, drenched that it was. She didn't know what to say at being caught singing.

Mina suddenly stopped singing and smiled sheepishly. "S-sorry. The little firefly things led me here and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Next time I'll uh..." She looked around awkwardly. "...knock."
She make a mental note not to engage in non-consensual duets in the future.
"My name is Mina. I'm a friend of the Eygor Mjok. I was the one who fought that weird ghoul guy initially. I would have joined the procession but uh-" She gestured to Uma, "I know what it's like to be shy too. But, you're a much better singer than me."
Her translucent guardian unfolded itself from its inert state. Since Uma was magically inclined, she could see it a bit more clearly. It wasn't an animal, but rather an armored woman with long, slender, almost otherworldly proportions. The creature was elegant, almost insect-like. It appeared to bow apologetically.

As if her privacy wasn't already ruined enough, a dog could be heard barking not too far away. A few moments later a torrent of magical fireflies flooded the space between them and then dissipated.
Apparently Fisk had been chasing them; he appeared in between Uma and Mina and swerved around erratically. He pounced empty earth here and there in a last ditch effort to try to catch one.
Hoegr Rakki appeared almost as suddenly as Fisk had, his agile feet having adapted to this forest. He appeared with a huge smile for Uma, and a gift!
"Some lands whisper. This forest speaks very loudly. It sings from all around." He said as he attempted to hand Uma a makeshift garland of flowers. He was a little out of breath from chasing Fisk to their party.
Only then did he become aware of Mina's presence. "Uh, sorry, I did not bring you one." He chuckled and waved at the Mjok ally.

The dark haired woman froze. She had wanted to see him, but he had never witnessed her in ritual and she felt a little more exposed than she was used to. The gown was the typical Usquean silk and it was toga like, very feminine in comparison to the garb she wore when fishing, though the dress was fairly modest as far as coverage. For a moment, she gazed at the man who had started winning her favor even as aloof as she may have first appeared. The girl glanced behind her, but it might surprise Mina to see her cover up a giggle... That giggle of one who had feelings for another. Oh, and her blush had deepened and wrapped around the back of her neck. It made for a lovely picture of the fae thing that she was.
But then there was a hiccup. She wanted to shrink into the water, she panicked and instinct caused her to flee the scene, encumbered by the water but for a moment.

"Oh, she's socially awkward too." Mina the Self-Taught Knight nodded assertively. Rakki shook his head, though he was clearly amused by the whole thing. "Women." He said to himself. "Hey I agree and I am one." Mina replied. Rakki decided to give chase. Though, he didn't exactly run after her, more like trotted along. The whole scene was still wonderful, the fireflies, the magic, the birth of a new land. It just had an extra layer of humor added to it now. Following her would be easy. She wouldn't be as quick with the water on her gown, which itself would leave a trail for him. Mina, already feeling like a third wheel, wasn't sure if she should follow them. She knew the two liked each other and were on the cusp of courtship, but quite frankly she was a tad lonely and just wanted someone to talk to besides her ghostly guardian. Luckily Fisk was there. She knelled down and offered to let him sniff his hand. "Sup fellow third wheel." After deciding she was a decent enough person, Fisk rolled around a bit as a sign of good faith and then also trotted after his master. Mina decided to follow along too at a distance. Her guardian, of course, accompanied her.

She had been caught up in a moment that should have been privately shared, true, but chase wouldn't be on had that not happened. She stumbled into a deeper section, crystals seemed to spread for far enough it would take time to find the border opposite. Then she found herself in another predicament. After a time, she grew lost. Then she blinked in surprise as she realized what the song had done because of the people. She approached a rather large crystal jutting out of the earth, as clear as glass and incandescent with a slight green tinge. A sort of eerie feeling passed as she found herself mesmerized.
At first, it was as if she could see herself reflected within the forward facets. She saw them seemingly ripple as if a placid lake, only very subtle in movement. She gave a shudder and peered closer until she saw the face of the woman, her recently deceased friend's face.
With a gasp, she stumbled back and fell backwards, hitting her butt firmly on the ground. While her posterior was sore, the feeling of that presence hit, and it was not a threatening presence, nor did it seem to stay shining for too long. It seemed to sputter out like a lightbulb as it dies.
She felt as if there was a nearly silent whisper in her ear that seemed to indicate that she was happy to have a way to help. And then it dawned on her there were several similar promises. She slowly stood up and looked every which way, a stare of disbelief.
Rakki would be able to catch the scene at least partway in and might be able to feel it once he made it to the spot, and then Mina too. An overwhelmed Uma slowly turned toward the others, her expression quite palpably awed in the best kind of way. "The souls of those who were buried came here to protect us... It's ... Faint. They have yet to gather strength, perhaps..." She turned about and looked around, then gave a gentle laugh, we are the Usque, my people... I... I think I understand," her eyes seemed to mist over them with the overwhelming emotion of this.

Rakki caught up to Uma.
He erred on the side of caution, approaching Uma and the dominant crystal carefully. He saw his reflection in it, and he indeed felt... something: whispers, though not the usual kind.
He heard Uma's explanation, and then he approached closer in awe.
"Then... your loved ones, your dead, can become landvaettir." He said as he reached down to help Uma up. That was the explanation that made the most sense in his mind. If so the implications were astonishing. It would mean that the collective power of the Usqueans rivaled those of the giants of old, and that the Usquean essence was truly ancient.
He unconsciously reached to hold her hand as he continued to gaze in wonder.

Mina also arrived at the scene just after Rakki. But she held back a bit to hear their explanation while letting them share their intimate moment. However, her jaw dropped when she realized that, without meaning to, she had brought her guardian to meet fellow guardian spirits borne out of the deceased. That implication literally sent shivers down her spine. I guess fate isn't always arbitrary and cruel.
She decided to carefully step past the young couple and take a closer look at the crystal. She wondered what would happen if she tried to see her guardian spirit in its reflect-
Keep them safe, kid. You can do it. She heard a faint, masculine voice in her ear.
It was Mina's turn to fall on her butt. She looked up at the couple, embarrassed.
"... Sorry."
Her guardian spirit helped her up.
"I will. Thank you." She whispered, barely realizing she was audible.

She lifted her arm, looking down to see that her hair was standing on end, goosebumps dotting her flesh heavily. She gave a soft laugh again. When Rakki took her hand, she felt a tingling sensation trickling up her arm. The whispers had her turn her head to look at him. She froze and her smile died, though she wasn't upset looking, more surprised. She stared at him for a long moment before opening her mouth to speak to him, "I would... Have a word with you in private soon. For now though, we should probably find out way back to the river and sit for a time... All of us." She looked to Mina then and continued, "It seems we need to speak of this and decide what to do from here.. obviously, the others will know if we tell them or not so we should... But we should probably give ourselves a chance to think on what was said."
And then she started toward where they had come from, the crystals seeming to glow subtly in the burgeoning dusk. The moon was a giant disc in the sky, tree fungus began to glow as well as darkness descended over the world. They might have felt like they were only gone for a short time, but it took about a half an hour to get back to where they had been, yet it was as if hours had passed by the way the moon was suspended.
She took a deep breath as she found a seat at a sort of clearing where the crystals were more pebble like. Without a word, she reached around her for larger rocks to ring a fire with.
Soon enough, she had a small fire going and dried foods were chucked into a pot that was stuffed in the rucksack she had tucked away for when she was ready to eat. She was silent still as she fashioned a stew and the aroma of it filled the air. A loaf of bread was put on a rock to be warmed up, and other things were produced such as cheese and fresh fruits like funny plums.
She watched the fire as that simmered in the coals. "I know what I must do. It's not the land that was enchanted as much as the people... It makes so much sense."

As they walked, Rakki looked up thoughtfully at the moon. "It's been a long day, has it not?" Mina the Self-Taught Knight, who walked along with them, replied, "No kidding." After a few minutes, the mood became entirely too somber for Rakki's tastes. So he began thinking of song lyrics to incorporate into future chants. "Poems humming under moon, shanties sung under the sky, loved ones rejoice beneath the stars, devils beneath our feet cry... Hmm, not bad." By the time they got to the campfire, Fisk was noticeably tired. He took a nap next to Mina by the fire, unperturbed by her guardian spirit hovering above him. Rakki added some of his rations to their little potluck as he reflected on the day's events. "It is curious, how much importance these lands place on death. The dead seek out other dead for nourishment." He spoke in reference to the cursed Ghoul King. "The dead return anew to protect the living." He smiled at Mina briefly. "And the dead make themselves known to their children." He looked over at Uma. "The native landvaettir are obsessed with death. Perhaps no one taught them better." "Maybe these landvaettir or however you say it, just wanna teach us to be stronger. Strength, bravery, defiance against unfathomable odds, they all get their meaning from the context of death." Mina leaned back slightly and stretch. "Wise words. Well-suited musings for a chant." Rakki replied. "Maybe Uma can teach me how to sing better." Mina chuckled. Fisk yawned. The humans talked too much sometimes.
