Jun of the Celadine

Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

While not exactly shelter, the cave provides respite from the worst of the sun and wind. It is large and somewhat private. Exiting during high tide can be difficult.

Washed up on the shore was an odd, tailed figure. She had bright blue skin and fuchsia hair, dark blue pants and cloth covered her lower half and bust. As it stood she was soaking wet and unconscious on the beach, her legs reaching into the water, and her upper half on the sand, face up.

Slowly but surely, something started pulling her out of the water...
A few minutes later, Duna might start to come to as a bit of strength poured into her body. If she did, she'd find a sea gull sitting on top of her, and a coconut crab a couple of meters away, watching her head with curious beady eyes.
Around the rock at the edge of the cave, wading through water and approaching her, was a woman in an old green gambeson, carrying a couple of sacks.

Echoing in the cloudy distance of her senses, Duna would heard the voice of a young woman.
"Damn. She's in bad shape. Keep trying. Maybe another animal around here..."
Even after working with Avalux, Jun still wasn't the most competent healer on the island. And not every nearby animal took to light magic equally. The poor... uh, girl? She was likely dehydrated, something Jun was too familiar with as it nearly killed her when she first arrived on the beach.
Fortunately the cave was partially shielded from the sun, and Jun had brought some broth and some food and medicine. She could treat her with mundane methods. But damn would magic be convenient right now, especially since she wasn't very familiar with the creature's physiology. The closest Jun had seen to a reptilian humanoid was a kobold. But this creature looked much more human than kobold.
"Oh, wait a second... that might work."
------
More strength would pour into Duna's body, which was now dragged safely away from the water. She'd cough up sea water and (hopefully) awaken in a daze.
To her side would be the same woman in a gambeson, waiting and hoping expectantly. And sitting on top of Duna's chest would be the biggest, ugliest sea hare she'd likely ever seen. Its little undulating frills for feet would be glowing translucently, as if someone had placed a tiny sun underneath the creature's body. It'd be warm to the touch too, though it was still lively and intact. It would be pressed against Duna's sternum with wet, mucous-y suction, and pulsing in tune with her heartbeat.

She scrambled to her feet, her mind filled more with confusion than anything else as she tried to figure out where she was and what was going on.

"AHISHOULDHAVESEENTHATCOMING!"
Jun leapt up and caught the squishy beast and then skidded through the sand next to Duna face down.
The sea hare survived.
Jun made a sputtering noise and spit up some sand. Her hands were outstretched in front of her and stiff as boards while the oblivious beast oozed out of her fingertips. "Ok, you know what, that's on me." She gently let the creature down and turned over to face Duna, who would be standing over her. Her gambeson was covered in wet sand, but she didn't seem upset by this.
"How are you feeling?" She asked as seriously as she could while lying up with her arms outstretched comically.

Jun half expected to be attacked by the reptilian. She was surprised by how fearful she seemed. Then again the sea hare probably wasn't the best start, but it was the creature with the strongest light affinity she could find in the area.
(The seagull was chilling on a nearby rock. The coconut crab skittered over to pick up the sea hare and take it back to the water.)
"I'm sorry. I needed its help to heal you. I'm not sure where you're from but in this world magic is severely muted." She spoke softly and calmly, though she did side eye the coconut crab to double check that it wasn't going to eat the sea hare (though she seemed to remember that they were inedible).
Jun sat up and crawled over to her bags, which she opened up, revealing some bamboo-like containers and a couple of leather water skins. A faint smell of food would waft from the containers.
"My name is Jun, by the way. Are you hungry or thirsty? I'm quite certain you're thirsty it's almost a stupid question sorry."

She did warily take one of the containers of water. Testing a bit before quickly chugging down the liquid. She wasn't ready quite yet to trust a stranger, but she lowered her hackles, and simply watched the stranger.

"Ok, yah, that's it."
Jun was glad to see the girl drink some water. She went ahead and popped open some of the containers containing food.
Island fair consisted of dried coconut, dried pork (at least it was closely related to pork), dried kelp, dried fruits, dried fish, dried sap, etc. The only not-so-dried fare were some edible fried insects, which Jun wasn't shy about eating.
Figuring that the bugs were the grossest thing to some outsiders, she started by eating a few of those. If that was safe to eat, surely everything else was, right?
"Do you... have a name? Do you... speak common at all?"

She shook her head at the question, not even sure how to even begin assembling the sounds, let alone constructing the words.

Jun furrowed her brow and rubbed her chin. The person could understand her, but not speak?
There were only so many explanations for that. It didn't seem like the girl was deaf. Perhaps a mute, like Tana. Or perhaps she was partially bilingual. Some people could understand a language but simply not speak it due to lack of practice. But then again the girl didn't even try making noises at all.
This was a difficult puzzle. She needed more information.
"Oh, I know." Jun dusted herself off a bit and sat with her back straight about a meter and a half away from the reptilian. Then, she waved her hand over the sand between them. The sand magically formed into a flat surface.
Jun stuck her finger in the sand and drew a happy face. Man I'm really just throwing darts in a board and hoping one sticks.
"Can you draw me a picture of how you're feeling right now?" She did her best to keep her tone soft and non-threatening.

The girl bent down to answer, then stopped. She'd never had to try and explain things to another person, she always just... shared, with them. After several moments, she took her finger, and drew, as best she could, a face shriveled in confusion and fear.

The wiggly mouth, the scrunched up eyes. Yes, that all tracked. But it also gave Jun a lot of information. The girl really could understand her, and their way of thinking was more or less compatible. The reptilian was different species, yes, but not so alien that they couldn't share smiley faces.
"It's ok. I know how you feel. Also know I have no plans to hurt you."
With another wave of her hand, Jun erased the sandy board. Then, she drew a stick figure with an open, Pac-Man sort of mouth. She wrote the word "Hello" coming out of the mouth.
"So, how would you normally talk to someone? You can draw, or you can show me. Whatever you want. I'll try to understand."
