They wear a wide jingasa upon their head made from straw and layered with cloth to protect it. Over the cloth, there is a translucent black veil. In the central island, just at the bottom of the great mountains and beside a small lake, is a small village. More than three dozen houses are scattered about, and though they are made of thatch and mud, they are sturdy and keep the rain out on most days. The beginnings of more permanent dwellings can be seen under construction further up on the hills, closer to the treeline. Rice paddies have been dug out and started, but no signs of budding can be seen just yet. A large rock has been carved into, poised just outside a stick fence, bearing the words: 産骸 It is very quiet here. There is no chatter, no laughter, no cries; at least, not from its denizens. The sound of work during the day and the occasional sounds of nature is all one will gleam. But at night? All is different.

In the village by the river and the lake, the people were hard at work. Trees were being cut and hauled to a makeshift workshop, where they were turned to lumber. Branches were put into a pile for firewood and leaves were tested to see if they made suitable teas or anything else that might be useful. Down at the river, water was being scooped into buckets, thrown into a cauldron to boil. A few sat in circle threading strands of fiber. Others were tending to the fields. All in all, the village was busy, and few had the attention to give to the pegasus until it was upon them. Only one or two noticed at first, raising their masked faces to the sky. Then, it was three, four, ten, twenty. Soon enough, the entire population of robed figures were gazing over at the magnificent sight and waded through the lush grassland toward it. One, who was tall and regal, wearing red and black robes, raised a hand toward it.

Pocketing his spyglass Renaux blinked digesting what he'd seen. It was, honestly, nothing too strange on the surface. A small village going about its daily life. However, he'd noticed a few things. A truly staggering number of huts had already been built for a village as new as this one must be and every person he'd observed was wrapped head to toe in heavy robes. He supposed that this far north things got chilly but he'd not seen anyone wearing less, even the people hard at work.
"They appear to be friendly, one waved at me. But they also seem to be a bit odd."
The knight informed Ti'el as he directed Neige down toward the ground just outside the village. This put them a few hundred feet from the group as he dismounted, stroking his steeds mane before he offered Ti'el a hand if she needed one. If she accepted or refused, he'd head towards the gathered people once she had her footing.
"Greetings, I am Renaux de Travére another stranger in these strange lands. As I have the means I've been travelling between the villages in this region to share news. If you came here escaping floods then you are not alone, many are struggling to settle after being forced from their homes."
This was where he usually started, to make it clear that despite his armor and steed he was not representing some larger kingdom at present. Because there were no large kingdoms at present, at least, not in this region.

Appearance: Tiny and lithe, Ti'el is as spritely as the desert fox that she resembles. Two brown, tall ears sit atop her head in a nest of messy blonde hair. Spots of dark melanin decorate her face, stretching from the inside of her eyes down the bridge of her nose. They also freckle the back of her neck, her arms, and her stomach.
Though her body is predominantly human, her feet do end in dainty paws. Stretching from her lower back is an incredibly fluffy, golden tail with a hazel stripe down the middle.
Her eyes are a dark, washed-out blue, making it difficult to tell whether her pupils are slit or round.

Skills and Abilities: Though she does not enjoy combat, Ti'el is a fine hunter by nature. Small animals and insects cannot escape her grasp when her stomach when she is hankering for a meal, and sometimes even larger prey, perhaps even deer, will find themselves in danger from the vulx's claws. She has incredible hearing, good enough to detect prey underground, and can survive with very little water for long amounts of time. She has a fantastic resistance to heat but suffers greatly in cold climates. Though not strong, Ti'el is very agile and swift. Scaling trees or skirting through a forest is no difficult task for her.

"Odd how?" asked Ti'el. "Odd like me?" She looked down below at the robed figures, brow pinching as she tried to make out faces, only to find out that there were no faces. They were wearing masks, each one of them scribbled with words the vulx couldn't understand. They did not have ears or a tail like herself that she could see, so they were odd in a very different way.
The robed figures approached Renaux and Ti'el with a patient stride. Other than their height and the color of their robes, the style of their garb stayed the same. Even the way they walked was similar.
Ti'el felt threatened by the oddness of such a sight and hid behind Renaux, ears pinned to her head.
Not one of the figures responded to the man's words, but they continued to advance. When they were upon the couple and the winged steed, they paused their stride. At the vanguard was one with robes of gold, red, and orange. The rim of their hat tilted with their head, a pose that was universally questioning. The figure was several inches taller than the knight and loomed forward, but not to belittle him. It held out a gloved hand.
Within it, there was a ball of rice.

"Oddly dressed for what they are doing."
Renaux clarified his statement to Ti'el before they landed. He did not protest as she hid behind him, the large man standing straight and proud with no apparent sign of tension. Though he was feeling what she was to an extent, it was rather unnerving to see so many masked people approach in uniform silence. But he kept his hand from straying to his sword as he tried to figure out the writing on their masks. He knew a few different languages thanks to his royal tutors so he was trying to dig up some of those lessons.
When the rice was presented to him he blinked slowly deciding on the best course of action. Eventually he reached out a hand but he did not take the rice ball from the figure. Instead he just moved it close enough to see if that was the figures intent. If the rice was pushed towards him he would accept it otherwise he'd drop his hand. Either way, he did try speaking once again.
"Do you understand me?"
He inquired in the common tongue before rolling through a few others. Gauldish was a long shot but his mother tongue came first, Sakadian, Katashiman, Tawakoshian, and a few others. Most he was only knew enough to get by in but he'd learned quite a few of them because the youngest prince was typically supposed to help with diplomatic matters.

The red-robed figure inclined their head in a nod, though they gave no verbal confirmation. They pressed the rice ball into Renaux's palm, gesturing for him to eat. A smaller one, this one in green robes, pattered up to Ti'el and did much the same. Though the vulx's tail hid between her legs at the approach, her curiosity got the better of her. She took the rice ball, sniffed it, and with some hesitation, took a bite. It wasn't a roasted strip of meat, but it was certainly better than the flower petals she'd been starving on for the last few days! She took the whole thing into her mouth but choked on it as she tried to swallow. The onlookers would raise her hands to where their lips would be as they watched.
Should the man eat his treat, he would find something sweet and tangy in the center. It was a red paste, thick and soft. Perhaps in his travels to Tawakoshi, he'd had something similar.
When Ti'el finished choking, the figures gestured to their guests to follow. Were they so inclined, as Ti'el was determined to stay by Renaux's side, they would lead the two to an outdoor platform. Interwoven pieces of bamboo kept a piece of cloth- it looked like a sail- suspended above to keep the rain out. Beneath, various projects were spread out. Most were tools, but tiny little figurines were on a few tree stumps laid down as desks. They were of all different shapes, every one of them a monster. One was a little fishman with gills spread out from beneath his chin; another was a beast with large tusks, not unlike an orc. One of them was a little fox person. Red took it up and gave it to Ti'el, cocking their head to the side while pointing. One in purple robes came up to Renaux and gave him one that would seem familiar. Not like him, but more like a Tawakoshi samurai, heavily armored, and pointed to him in turn with a questioning tilt.

Renaux would not eat his treat, at least, not right away. When he noted how swiftly Ti'el wolfed down her riceball he'd paused. First offering her a swig of water from his water skin to clear her throat, then offering her his riceball since he was nowhere near as famished as she seemed to be. If she did not want it, he'd eat it himself as to be polite. He was not overly worried about being poisoned. Perhaps he should have been but most people he'd met in these lands were not overly hostile. Those who were tended to wear it on their sleeve and not hide it behind robes though the robes did raise questions.
Either way, the writing he saw all about was familiar. Definitely similar to the style in Tawakoshian lands he thought. He might have tried writing a message to them but his education had only extended to the spoken language the written was beyond him. The offered figure is accepted and he recognized the make of armour. "So your people are from Tawakoshi?" He inquired but he suspected there would still be no answer despite him delivering the question in the language. "But you appear to all be mute." Which suggested that whatever was underneath the robes was not human since it would be exceedingly strange to find a village of only mute humans would be unlikely.
"I don't suppose you've understood anything I've said?" He asks. "Perhaps you could nod your head if you do?"

When the bun was offered, Ti'el devoured it with the same ferocity as the first. Though she hardly listened as they came to the workshop, her interest became piqued when she was given the statue of the fox-person. Her ears stood straight as she turned it over in her hands. She turned to the robed figure next to her, asking questions they would not answer.
Meanwhile, the red robes turned their attention to Renaux. To the Tawakoshi question, they shook their head. To the question of whether or not they understood, they nodded, as they did before. They raised one slender, long, gloved finger to where their mouth would have been, and with the other, produced a hexagonal coin with a hole in the center. The rim was silver, while the center was gold. Right as it would have entered Renaux's palm, the coin vanished. Ti'el yelped at the display, ears pressing against her head.
"Illusion magic!" he hissed. "That is evil magic!"
After exchanging glances, a few of the robed figures clinked what seemed like tassels before, but were now revealed to be delicate chimes. The coin was produced once more and plopped into the vulx's palm. Red robes then gestured to Renaux expectantly.

The illusion magic didn't really startle Renaux but Ti'el's reaction did. The man started slightly before he turned to look at her with a slightly worried expression on his features. "Er, it is not considered so in my land and it may not be in theirs. So perhaps best not to pass such judgements on people who have been nothing but cordial to us?" While he did not think it was his place to chastise her behaviour he did want to mitigate some of the potential damage her outburst could have caused. Though it made him feel mightily uncomfortable to do so.
Red Robes was gesturing between the vulx and himself though the exact intent was hard to parse. "Do you want me to take the coin from her? To give you coin in turn?" He wasn't quite sure what the goal was here. To extract payment for the food? Asking for coin would be quite odd considering, at present, it was only worth the material it was made out of and that was valued at far less when most people were more focused on surviving.

The chimes played again. The noise was carefree, light, easing away at any tenseness that Renaux felt coming from Ti'el's outburst. Red Robes shook their head at the man, then turned to lead him elsewhere.
They came to the edge of the forest, where Red Robes placed a hand on the trunk. Though it was the middle of summer and the leaves were green as could be, but with a little concentration, they flushed with a rainbow of vivid reds, yellows, and oranges. Red Robes tapped the symbol on their mask, then offered to them the leaves before pointing to themself again.
Another, one with white robes, arched a hand above their head, creating the smallest stormcloud Ti'el had ever seen. From it, a torrent of snow collected into White Robes' hands, which they offered to Renaux and the vulx.
"... is the symbol Snow?" asked the vulx, perking a brow. "And are you, um, Leaf?"
More chimesound, followed by a jubilant shake of Red Robes' head.

"Par le ciel!"
Renaux swore in surprise at the display of magic Red Robes just put on. Maybe it was just illusion magic but it was still a more impressive display than the young knight had seen in some time. He'd not thought that anyone was still capable of something like that in this strange land. And it was being used as symbolism to help the strange robed figures communicate.
"Truly, I wish I had paid more attention during my art course."
The man murmured to Ti'el as her guess was dismissed. He looked at the red leaves, then at the snow, and then considered what was being conveyed with all that and he took a guess at what they were trying to say.
"Winter? You are Winter? Your people are Winter?"
Honestly, he was guessing here and hoped he wasn't too far from the mark. He was a pegasus knight first, a soldier second, still technically a prince maybe even if he no longer had a nation to be a prince of. But it was a part of his identity and the only part that had gotten tutoring on interpreting art. So he was going to lean on it even if it had been his worst subject.

Ti'el squinted her eyes hard and flicked her tail in as much annoyance as she had curiosity. If it was not leaf and it was not snow, then...
"Winter?"
Renaux's realization had her perking up her ears and forming her lips into a silent "o". As he asked what was winter, they both pointed to the white-robed figure. To illustrate further, Winter put their hand out, filled with snow, and Red Robed put their hand out with the red leaf. Beside that, they presented green grass, and to the left of that, a flower. With these four things in a row, Red Robes pointed to the leaf, then to themself.
"Autumn," Ti'el realized. "You are Autumn." She looked to them with a furrowed brow. "These names are unusual."
And yet again, the chimes rang out. The vulx's ears flicked back and forth as she thought. They'd done this three times now!
"Are you laughing at me?"
With jubilance, they nodded. Every single one. Autumn patted Renaux on the shoulder as they passed, walking back into the village. They came to the paddies, where the rice was still growing, and showed him the crop. They presented to him the grasses, which they were turning into a fiber. Though they had no words to give, they had much to teach. Mysteriously, however, they offered no drink except for water.
As the sun began to sink below the horizon, the denizens of Sianhai rose their heads to gaze. More hurriedly than the rest, Autumn gestured for Renaux and Ti'el to follow. The figure would lead them to one of the bamboo huts, and while it was no fancy house, the craftsmanship was expertly made. Ash planks were laid on the bare ground but the closeness of the bamboo for the walls closed them off from the elements to provide some level of comfort. Within, there were two cots made with a down of feathers and animal pelts.
Before they were kept inside, Autumn began to draw something on the wall with a stain of grass. The first image was of the village, crude, but clearly represented. Above, they drew the sun, then smeared the sun below the horizon. They drew everyone going inside, then sketched a symbol on each of the doors. It was the symbol they motioned to draw on the door to their little abode currently. They then clapped their hand on the door, pointed to the sinking sun, and cut a hand across their neck. Moving over to the wall, they illustrated a newly rising sun, then opened the door again.
They tapped their temple, as though to say, "Understand?"

Renaux did not comment on the lack of water. It was an easy thing to wave away considering that most people in this land were refugee and would likely have wine and spirits in short supply, the sort of thing one would be inclined to save for special occasions and perhaps guests did not qualify. Who was he to fault their hosts for that when they were otherwise quite genial, to the point that he lost track of time and the sun was drifting toward the horizon.
It appeared as though their hosts were willing to provide shelter for the evening but it came with a caveat. "Er." Renaux looked toward Ti'el and then to the robed figures. "I understand that you are saying we need to remain in here until sunrise. Or I think that's what I understand." He said looking at the beds. "But should not miss Ti'el and I share a separate hut in respect to her modesty?" It was a bit improper for a man and a woman to sleep together in the same room if not married after all.

One of Ti'el's ears swiveled around to point at Renaux before she turned her head to face him. Her brow pinched and her eyes narrowed. In all her life, never had anyone brought up such an issue. Back when she lived with her den, they bundled up in the back of the cave for warmth, no care for who they curled up next to. When she lived with humans, they slept in the same tents or beside each other, next to a fire. This seemed no different to the vulx, who was even more alien to the word than just the concept.
"Modesty?" she chirped, raising a brow. "To what end?"
The robed figures exchanged glances but appeared to be waiting for Renaux's answer before offering an alternative.

Renuax’s experience differed vastly from Ti’el’s. He’d been born into royalty and then joined a branch of the military that only held officers. Even when he traveled he was typically offered his own room and the few times he’d shared a tent with other soldiers they had kept the genders separated. In short, he had never in his life slept in the same room as a woman.
“I… to, its own end?”
The question of why they needed modesty left Renaux working his jaw in silent surprise since he wasn’t actually even sure how to answer the question. It appeared as though his companion did not mind sharing a room and perhaps it was inappropriate to ask their hosts to give up even more space.
“It's just… never mind, we can share this room.”
Even as he said it his cheeks were turning a brilliant shade of scarlet at the thought. There was no good argument to insist on such a thing when there was so little to go around. But par le ciel he had handled more intimidating things than this and he’d felt significantly less anxious about it.
