"Seal hide."
Düen responds with a grunt to Jun's question. There were few things better at keeping out water than that, their fur shed water like little else and when he'd found a group of them on the beach... Well, it always paid to have a nice rain cloak.
"Naw, but I can help you."
Was the dwarf's response when Asa came up to offer to help start the fire. The old dwarf opting to encourage the lad's desire to help by, potentially, taking the chance to teach him a few things. The older dwarf giving the young man a few pieces of advice on how to stack the firewood and to make sure that the sparks caught more readily.
"The reason we are staying near the mouth of the cave and we are going to keep another watch."
Was Düen's answer. Whatever it was, they were better off not checking. If it was some kind of animal then the group, and Basco, would be enough of a deterrent to keep it at bay. Since most predators preferred to look for easy prey. If it was the sort of beast that would attack a group this size regardless, he'd rather have the easy retreat into the rain if required. But he'd rather not require that since the rain could kill them more reliably than any animal. Investigating was asking for trouble they didn't need.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 305
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

"... Oh."
Jun turned back to her coat and continued focusing her mana on it.
Sure hope you at least ate them or fed them to Basco after, she thought to herself. It was a morbid thought, but she was of the opinion that if you were gonna kill something cute, you'd better at least not waste any of it.
Jun watched Duen give Asadrack pointers on fire-starting. She of course would remember the tips for herself. But more than that, watching Duen teach Asadrack helped her realize that Duen really did care about their group. Maybe it was too soon, but perhaps Duen was becoming a sort of a father figure to them. As for Jun herself, she had been an only child, and she started to wonder what having a younger brother would have been like. She wondered if Asadrack had anything like a sister in the world before the floo-
And then the back of the cave groaned.
Jun quickly turned back to her gambeson and rushed to put it back on. Thankfully it was bone-dry now, though she didn't have time to figure out how to waterproof it. Regardless of Duen's answer, she'd make sure her spear, sword, and bolas were right by her side, even while sitting near the fire.

Asadrack listened carefully, payed attention on the placement of everything, he thought that it would've been great if he still had his diary, he wanted to draw the campfire.
Than there was the growl of... something, I thought came through his head and he spoke "If enough smoke goes inside the cave whatever is inside the cave will come out, wouldn't it ?"

The growl came from further away now. It was highly doubtful the smoke would get that far back into the cave. Or at least, that was what Magda thought but said nothing. She was going to take Duen's lead on this one.

It was a good thing that Jun didn't voice that last thought aloud. Not only would Düen have been mightily offended at the suggestion he'd leave good meat to rot, he would have offered Jun some seal jerky. As it was he found that the young lad still needed a bit of schooling when it came to fires.
"Smokes hot and hot air rises." The dwarf explains pointing up to the ceiling. "That's why we build the fire near the edge of the cave, you see there is a bit of rounding there, the smoke will rise and then follow the easiest past flowing out of the cave as it hits that slop guiding it naturally outward. No smoke is going to get out."
There is another sound and Düen looks towards the back frowning. Hopefully, whatever it was, wouldn't be making noises all night. They were lucky to find shelter this quickly so they weren't going anywhere but missing a nights worth of sleep wasn't going to do anyone any favours.

Jun tried to relax. Duen seemed confident that the cave creature wasn't going to bother them. As it seemed to retreat further in, she felt her grip relax on her spear.
"Yah you better nnnnnnnnn," she muttered.
She rested her head against the cave wall. Her gambeson made it so she felt comfortable sitting just about anywhere. Her legs were finally free to start feeling like lead.
"Back in my homeland, one of the clans was experimenting with making farms in caves, growing mushrooms and lichens and what-not. There are some lichens that are medicinal and make good soup broths. They even tried doing up in the snowy peaks of the northern mountains with magic."
She sighed. She really hadn't had time to grieve the loss of her old home and people. She hadn't allowed herself any.

Asadrack nodded to Düen's words, whent the noise seemed bro get further he shrugged and sat down near the fire. "Back home everyone just fought eachother both figuratively and literally, Mercenaries were in a all time high demand and I was one of them, I met man and woman days before their deaths time and time again." Asa sighed, "Our group was great though, at least when we weren't fighting, the cook made great food."

Outside, the rain beat a heavy tattoo against the ground, so loud that it echoed in the cave. Thunder boomed as the rain pelted down upon the earth. The group would be stuck there for as long as it was raining that badly.
Magda would move to pull out some dried fish and a pot from her gear and place the fish in it along with some wild onions they had found, a plant that tasted like black pepper, and some yucca root. When the fire was ready, she would move to fill the pot with some of the rainwater that was accumulating pretty quickly.

"The past ain't worth troubling yerselves over." Düen says with a snort at Jun and Asadrack's words. The two had certainly taken on a maudlin air and the old dwarf wasn't having it. "Trust me, I've got more of it behind me than either of ye two have years ta count. The more time ye spend thinking about what was or might have been, the more life you miss out on living. Ye can't change the past and if ye don't want ta repeat it then focus on getting better."
That was all he had to say on the topic. Glancing over he can see that Magda is prepping a stew so the old dwarf settles on the most comfortable looking stone, which for a dwarf was an actual distinction that could be made, pulling out a pipe and filling it with some herb before lighting a small stick to ignite the pot. He draws in a lungful of smoke and breathes it out into the rain.

Jun's eyes shifted thoughtfully between the youngest member of the group, and the oldest. She took a moment to think about Duen's words carefully and read Asadrack's mood.
"That's true," she finally said. "But it's also not healthy to not mourn or cherish the past at all. There are times when our only reason for living, for wanting to get better, are the people we loved. Those bonds are a lifeline. They give us purpose."
Her head tilted more to Asadrack this time. "But, on the other hand, it's good to have an efficient means of honoring the past so it doesn't consume too much of ourselves. Things like prayers, incense, offerings, stories, rituals like that. We can also honor the people we lost by sharing the things they taught us with others."

"I'm with Jun on that one," Asa said, he looked at the rain, sighed and stayed near the fire, sitting cross-legged while tapping his finger on his knee.
The rain was pouring much like when he came to the isles, he thought of his past for a bit and eventually came to think of Tana. The young man couldn't help but to smile. He then thought of what Jun had said, "Wanna train a little ? It's not like we have anything better to do."

Magda smells the herbal smoke and glances over in curiosity as it is a familiar smell that comforted her. She sidled on closer to the dwarf just to sniff the scent, letting the food come to temperature for now. The noise from deep in the cave had stopped for the moment, they were safe.

"The bonds of the past can just as easily become chains. Take it from a dwarf. Honour your ancestors but do not dwell on their deeds. Remember your fallen but do not mourn them eternally."
The children were correct, you couldn't ignore the past entirely. However, tradition and ceremony could drag the present down and mire people in the past. Making them miss the joy and potential the world offered simply because it was not how things were done. Grief could consume you, remembering those that had passed making you neglect those that needed you in the present. To Düen's way of thinking the maudlin Asadrack was a prime example of that considering, as best as the dwarf could tell, Asa had a child on the way with the queen.

Duen certainly wasn't wrong. Jun had to concede that her obsession with her grandmother had almost destroyed her. On the other hand, she would never have become what she was without the drive to succeed that had been instilled by her.
"Moderation I suppose." She groaned as she sat back up. "Sure, Asadrack. Let's show each other some moves and stances and practice them. But-" Her head craned towards the back of the cave. "Maybe let's not contact spar. Don't wanna make too much of a ruckus and piss off whatever's back there."

Asa knew Düen was right but he said nothing, he only thought about it, it would be clear to the Dwarf that Asa had taken his words seriously.
The young man got up, "Yeah, you're right," Asadrack would show Jun different stances than the ones he showed her before and tried learning the ones she would show him. That training session felt better than to sit around rotting.
