To create an account for the first time, click on the button marked in the top right, directly below the banner. It will prompt you for your email and other information. This is your global (proboards) account, which represents you as a player. It is tied to your email address and hosts all of your characters.
When it asks for a 'username,' put in the username you would like your first character to have. Note: Usernames and display names are not the same; display names can be changed, usernames cannot. It often makes sense to make your username a shorter and less-likely-to-change version of your display name. For example, if your character is Captain Hook, it might make sense to make their username @hook, in case he gets promoted or loses his captainship down the line. (But no canon characters, more on that below.)
After successfully creating an account, you will now have access to the button on the top navigation list; clicking it will take you to the character's profile. Part of creating a character is filling in their profile with descriptions and biographical information.
To start, click on the button, and under the "Personal" tab, fill in your character sheet. There are no requirements for character sheets. You may put as much or as little as you would like, but we suggest you at least describe the character's appearance. Make sure to save your changes when you’re finished!
You can switch rapidly between your characters by using this button on the toolbar in the bottom-right corner of your screen:
You may not create accounts to represent gods or spell effects, and excessively large characters are disallowed. You also may not import characters from existing franchises. No canon characters, no characters from canonized settings. Additionally, do not directly relate your characters to real-world history. Beyond this, there are no other restrictions on character creation, and there is no approval process, but bear in mind that the goal of this site is to tell a collaborative narrative and provide a space for roleplay that fosters creativity and a fun environment.
For example: No mile-long dragons, no Alduin. No Naruto, no Harry Potter, no characters from Hogwarts, nobody from Star Wars. No Ghengis Khan, no Franz Ferdinand, no George Washington. No historical-fiction type characters taken directly from history. Note that characters inspired by real cultures and history are generally fine and encouraged, but direct rips and using real names is discouraged.
Additionally, you should choose a method to introduce your character. Nobody lived on The Isles prior to the events of the RP, and everyone needs to come from somewhere. You can choose if your character arrives on a ship with other characters, floating on a bit of driftwood, or just by swimming.
Once your character is ready, make your first post in The Edge of The Mist thread, emerging from The Mist, and then make your way to shore!
