Age: Too old for any shenanigans.
Appearance: In her natural shape, Va'nei is a large green dragon that is seemingly covered with moss and grass. But since the Flood, she has been contained to her human form, and is currently stuck in it. She is roughly five and a half feet tall, with light green hair that falls past her hips, and pale skin that bears a faint green iridescent scale pattern. Her eyes are a vivid shade of gold and hold great intelligence and wisdom due to her long years of life. She wears intricate robes of green and a feathered and beaded headband inlaid with a red gem.
--------------------------
Equipment: Equipment is for humans.
--------------------------
Skills and Abilities: As the Earthwarden, Va'nei is very closely tied to the earth. Even with the magic dampening effects of the mist on the isles, she can feel the "emotions" of plants, and create and control them to a degree, as well as communicate with animals. Her ability to move the earth has been greatly weakened, but still remains. Even in her human shape, she has the keen senses of a dragon, with a powerful sense of smell, excellent hearing, and sharp eyesight.

Biography: (For a full accounting of Va'nei's past, please see her website, linked in my profile/signature.)
Va'nei was born long ago, seemingly a normal dragon like any other. But through a series of events, she became the Earthwarden, guardian of the earth and the natural cycle of life. She's had many adventures, and met many people.

Va'nei and Patriarch had followed the coast north for a time, then veered east to trace the path of the ley line. It led them deep into a rainforest, which was much more comfortable for the dragoness, to be surrounded by her element. But she wasn't inconsiderate of the leviathan's needs. Sensing the gaps in the tree cover made it easy to locate water sources, although most of them had just been tiny springs, barely more than puddles, welling up from the forest floor.
That day, as they prepared to make camp for the evening, she located a river, and led them right to it. The part she found was calm, and for the most part not terribly deep, but there were a few hollows along the banks where water eddied and gathered to form pools he could revitalize himself in. She flopped down at the base of a tree, removing her boots and sticking her feet in the water. They hurt. She'd never walked so much in her life, and she couldn't help complaining a bit, a tiny frown on her lips.
"I miss my wings."

Age: A few hundred years or so.
Appearance: Patriarch is a sea elf, the last of his kind, or he was in the old world. While he looks youthful he carries an ancient soul that has known countless tragedies. Where in some this might have bred cynicism in Patriarch it bred compassion and kindness. After losing so much he decided to dedicate himself to helping others as much as he could. This eventually led to him becoming an Egg Bearer or in his case more of an Egg Protector. Dedicating himself to protecting and guiding the youth of the younger races of Fishfolk, steering them away from the path that led to the doom of his race.
----------------------------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Sea elves are exceptionally long-lived, possessed the innate magical talent to manipulate water, could breathe on land or sea, and were quite harder as they can survive at the depths of the ocean.
In the new world, Patriarch has found that his ability to manipulate water drastically reduced and he can no longer perform auguries or scry. A learned specialty from when he used to be an advisor to the king of the sea elves. But he remains hale and hearty as ever or so he thinks, he does sense some change within himself. Like the water in the vast sea of years he had before him was dwindling to more of a puddle.

"They would make this quite a bit easier."
Patriarch acknowledged as he strode into the water, it didn't get terribly deep but he waded out far enough that he could submerge himself entirely. He stayed under the waves for a few moments before he reemerged and floated on the surface. His feet hurt, mostly around the part that had turned into coral. Other than that he had few complaints, he missed the open water of the ocean but the surface was interesting. Plus the relative humidity of the jungle was fairly pleasant on his skin so he wasn't suffering too much between water sources.

"Understatement."
She muttered the word as she soaked her feet in the water, letting the water soothe away the aches and pains. She was exhausted, and she missed being able to fly. She didn't know if she'd be able to regain her dragon shape when they found the junction, but as long as she could keep Patriarch from calcifying into coral, and hopefully herself from turning into petrified wood, she'd be content. Although what her life would entail if she couldn't get her wings back, how she would serve her purpose as the Earthwarden without her abilities, she didn't know. As she sat there considering this, a momentous frown formed on her face. What was she supposed to do with her life if she wasn't tending and mending the Earth?

"I believe you. I've never flown but I imagine it to be like swimming through the air. Walking on land is very restrictive, how to people cope not being able to go in any direction they wish to move? I haven't thought on it much but it's frustrating."
He admitted with a rueful smile as he stared up at the tops of the trees. This wasn't the longest he'd been on land, but it was the furthest he'd ever travelled and he'd forgotten how little he cared for it. It was so strange when the world around you was an obstacle you had to overcome, a chasm wasn't just a curiosity but something you had to figure out a way to get across, a hill wasn't something to ignore far below you but a an obstacle to be climbed.

"It's extremely frustrating. It would also make getting to the junction much faster, and easier."
And that, of course, was the goal. She wiggled her toes in the water, looking at the little fish that came to investigate her feet, and sighed.
"Are you content as things currently are? Well, minus slowly turning into coral, that is."
Yes, there was a reason behind her line of questioning. She'd get around to it.

"Content with what? My life in general or with the trip?" He said as he shifted to look at her. "I was content with the sea folk, even with turning into coral. Right now I am..." He trailed off, frowned and thought of how best to articulate what he wanted to say. "Excited. This is the first sizable break in my routine in some time. I wouldn't say I felt restless but many days have blurred together. It is nice to be doing something that will stand out in my memories once again."

"I meant in general, your life with the Sea Folk, specifically."
She dug her fingers into the earth to either side of her hips, her expression thoughtful. She spent several long moments organizing her musings into something coherent before getting to what she'd been meaning to say.
"I've never.. done what you have. Chosen a people, lived among them, cared for them. My duty to the Earth always superseded any sort of.. commitment like that. But now that I don't have my duties as Earthwarden to occupy me.. I'm wondering if perhaps I shouldn't form some.. attachments."
The way she said the word made it sound very awkward. Then again, it was an awkward topic for her.

"I see." He said, he understood what she was getting at and pondered the best way he could respond. "I can't answer that question cleanly for you. I have had joy and I have had sorrow in getting to know the sea folk. If you ask me if I think it was worth it, I would say it has been. I was given the chance to help guide their young and I did my best to see them raised to value life and community. Many of them do and I take great joy in that. But there have been those who ignored what I tried to teach and sought out conflict despite my council and that wounded me. But the wounds mattered less to me than the act of trying to guide a younger race to a better future. I do not know how it would go for you, because I do not know what sort of attachments you might try and make."

"I don't know, either. I've never had any sort of attachments. The people I've spoken to have always seemed surprised by that. Many have asked why I've never had a mate, or hatchlings of my own. Some sort of.. Earth Mother association, it seems."
Which she always found rather amusing. Yes, the Earth was somewhat like a mother to all that lived upon its surface, nurturing them, providing protection, sustenance. But it was also somewhat unforgiving and harsh, at times, and that didn't seem very motherly to her. She mused on this as she tilted her head back, looking up at the leaves of the tree she was leaning against.
"I'm just wondering how I'm going to fill my time if I'm no longer the Earthwarden. It's a somewhat daunting prospect."

"An unasked for change is often a daunting prospect. But life continues on one day at a time and you do not need to answer that question right this moment. Time moves forward whether we wish it to or not, you will wake up each day and face its challenges as they come. When your mind drifts to the future, I recommend starting by asking yourself what you want. That I think is the best way to start the process of figuring out how you will fill your time in the future and for now you know what to do next so take what comfort you can in that." Patriarch said and when he finished speaking he paused and chuckled.
"My apologies, I spend quite a lot of time in the nurseries raising the young sea folk. It's been a very long time since I've talked to anyone my own age or even close to it, so I spend a lot of time dolling out the wisdom of my years which you may well not need." He finished with a shake of his head. He did it to the young without asking because they looked to him for guidance already and he shouldn't have assumed she was doing the same.

Asking herself what she wants... It was clear by the expression on her face that she'd never done such a thing before, and that she didn't relish the prospect of doing so now. Because honestly, it had never been a question of what she'd wanted. All she'd ever wanted, ever since she first became the Earthwarden, was to.. be the Earthwarden. Before that... Ye gods, that was so long ago, did she even remember what it was like before? She closed her eyes and furrowed her brow, trying to remember those days. What had she wanted? Before she could start sifting through those long-past, hazy memories, he spoke again, and she opened her eyes to look at him.
"Your wisdom differs greatly from my own, and only a fool turns away wisdom when it's offered. I like to think that after living for so long, I'm no fool."
A smile quirked up one corner of her lips, her eyes sparkling with good humor. Obviously she wasn't offended by his advice, because even though she hadn't explicitly asked for it, she had been seeking some sort of response, reassurance even.

"I was certain I wasn't a fool once. I turned out to be wrong. But even a fool can have wisdom."
It could have been a joke, his tone was light but there was also a faint hint of melancholy. He'd already shared some of his past and she knew the shape of his regrets. Still, he matched her quirk of the lips with a smile of his own. He let silence rule for a while, leaving her to ponder his wisdom. He was there to listen if she had anything else to say or an answer to the question of what she wanted.

Va'nei was silent for quite some time, pondering what he'd said, and more importantly, herself. What did she want? It was a difficult question. She'd always only wanted to be the Earthwarden, to tend the Earth and its creatures. But without her dragon shape, without her abilities, she couldn't do that. What would she have wanted if she'd never been the Earthwarden? She closed her eyes, her brow furrowing as she sank into deep thought, trying to imagine a life where she hadn't been chosen for her role. Perhaps she would've wanted a mate, hatchlings of her own. Now? The thought was.. disconcerting. She shook her head, dismissing the thoughts, and opened her eyes again, looking at Patriarch.
"Do you ever get lonely? I know you have the Sea Folk, but being the only one of your kind, of your age, among such short-lived beings..."

Roleplay posts: 49

"Of course." He had no reason to deny it. "I've struggled with loneliness for a long time, if there were any other leviathans that lived in oceans I never found. Being the only one of my kind these many years has weighed on me. But I find the joy where I can, even if they never quite reach my age the Sea Folk can often be mature beyond their years." He had no answer on how to fix this, though, he supposed he actually did since it was pleasant to be in her company knowing she was just as ageless as he. Which was to say, they had been but now seemingly not so much.
