Appearance: (note: icon temporary)
5'7" tall with a relatively thin, semi-athletic frame. Her blonde hair is cut to her shoulders and held up in a half-tail, with a pair of goggles resting on top of her head both keeping the hair out of her heterochromatic one-blue-and-one-aqua eyes. Generally she wears simple orange-ish tan breeches and a green sleeved shirt, occasionally with a harness made of wood and metal scraps and often carrying one or more of her creations.
Equipment: She has a small set of tools with which to cut and nail together wood and thinner metals, as well as a buckler-like shield with a blade coming out the front, cobbled together from scrap materials. She also has a pair of broken mechanical wings that are missing their old power source and a half finished forearm-mounted crossbow.
Skills and Abilities: She is highly creative, able to use even discarded and scrap materials to create interesting small tools, weapons, and similar pieces.
She is good with carpentry and basic mechanics, with passable knowledge in working cold metal.
Biography: She was born on the island of Éledún, home to one of the most magically gifted groups of humans in her world. However, from her birth it was known to all that she would lack any of these gifts for her entire life. Her eyes were enough to tell them that. So, to make up for the magical inadequacy she was so self-conscious of, she took up tinkering with wood and metal, creating small inventions to help around the town or to help fight(some...working much better than others). She spent most of her life trying to prove herself to her peers, but was always viewed as some eccentric outcast on the edge of town, until the flood washed everything away.

Here stands a quaint, sandy shore, speckled with red remains of material that seems to have once grown here, now dead or dormant. Before, this land was the edge of the domain of a great city of both demon and man. Now, though, after the coming of the mist…this is all that remains.

Today was a wonderful day. The sky was clear, the water calm. Truly, perfect conditions. Givena took a deep breath, enjoying the sea air before going back over her checklist for a final run-through.
By now, Givena guessed, it had been a few weeks since a bad storm and an all-encompassing fog shrouded this side of the central isle. A few weeks since she headed towards Helsreach the next day, only to find nothing there. No one there. Except her. Ever since that point, Givena had been working on getting off this gods-forsaken place and going to the other port city she’d heard about in her time here. Her boat, if you could call it that, was unstable and hard to steer, it would only leave her lost in the current. So, her other option boiled down to one simple plan.
She looked at the scrap of paper she had scribbled the list on. Patching the wings? Check. Fixing the joint mechanisms? Check. Replacing the cracked frame pieces? Check. And, finally, replacing the power source.
Givena glanced back at the wing-pack that she had brought with her to the island, almost entirely repaired from when her arrival had rendered it useless. Sitting in the center back, where once sat a glowing blue crystal, a small metal frame containing a red, organic-looking material now resided. The tinkerer knew that the old magic-sink battery that used to power it was entirely unsalvageable, however, she hypothesized that she could draw some magical energy out of what remnants of dormant fiendstuff was left behind by the people of Helsreach when they vanished. She figured without any other alternatives, she had to try getting something out of it, and spent most of the time repairing the wings on that.
Check.
With that, Givena stowed the list back into the pod-like contraption she had been living out of since she arrived, before exiting the small, haphazard lean-to she had used for shelter. She carefully strapped herself into the harness, making sure they were tight enough, before storing her few other things she was bringing securely and approaching the shore.
“Alright, here we go.” She muttered to herself, taking a step back. With a deep breath, she flipped open the casing of a small switch, before activating it. Slowly, then with some more force, the wings stirred to life. Her heart fluttering, she ran forwards and leapt into the air above the water, heart sinking as she slowly went from going up to going down.
Then, with a lurch, she began once again to rise. And rise, and rise, into the sky. She started to laugh with joy as she continued forwards, glad to finally have her magnum opus working once again. Gods, she missed this! She felt so alive, here in the sky, her elation taken even higher with her elevation. In her joy, she didn’t even see the boat sailing nearer in the water below.
She felt glorious, powerful, like once again she and her mind could take on the world. Like she was unstoppable. Like she…
…was falling.
Without warning, her wings went from smooth movement and strong pushes to a jittery flapping, not even enough to ease her fall. After not much longer, she heard a loud crack as the wings stopped completely, and Givena looked up just in time to see bits and pieces of metal cage and red organic matter falling slower than the rest, leaving the casing her power source was in. Then, she looked down at the rapidly approaching water. The only thing keeping her from screaming in her descent was a body seizing fear of what she could only see now as the inevitable.

Mai'a Leilani
New
Roleplay posts: 5
Age: 27
Appearance: Mai’a is a human with dark tanned skin and wavy, wild brown hair. She sports sharp features, from the brow that sits under a pair of dark eyebrows, to her high cheekbones that sit just under her magically blue eyes, to the strong jaw that frames her pretty face. She can usually be found sporting a wide smile that pulls at her cheeks, greeting each passerby with the brightness she sees in the world.
She has a toned, muscular body after years of solo sailing across the waves, and her skin is decorated with a series of dark blue tattoos, each one in line with her island folk’s traditional design and made with a mix of dark blue and aqua pigments.
She usually sports light clothing and usually clothing that is designed to dry quickly in the warm island sun. She wears loose, traditional sleeves that weave from half way up her hand to her upper arm before being capped by a thick golden bangle. Her chest is rather bare, except for an ornate piece that covers her chest, connected to a vest-like piece that curves up into a collar that frames her neck on either side.
Finally, she wears a light blue and white skirt that opens from the top of her right thigh across to her left knee, along with a matching sash that she wears around her waist.
Equipment: The clothes on her back, a hand carved surf board, and her wa kaulu, dual hulled boat that she uses to sail the world.
Skills and Abilities: Though slightly drained of her full strength by the mist, Mai'a is a skilled water mage, able to manipulate water to her will. Though taxing on her body, and to the layman her mana pool, she can also generate water to an extent.
She is an incredible swimmer and can free dive for several minutes at a time.
Mai'a is a life long sailor aboard her single person craft.
Finally, she had to train as a warrior as part of her mage training, making her deadly with a spear, a shark toothed sword, and in hand to hand martial arts.
Biography: Mai’a started life as the daughter of parents who hailed from far away lands who met a tragic end in the south seas when their ship sank with all hands. The sole survivor, as far as anyone is concerned, was Mai’a. The people of the Sapphire Chain found her as a baby amongst the debris that washed up on the shores of one of their islands. Try as they might, no other survivors were found, and she was brought into their world, where she was named Mai’a Leilani.
Her exciting entry to life was only the beginning of a life filled with adventure. She took to the island nations like a fish to water, almost literally. The water was as much her home as the shore was, much to the delight of her adoptive parents. It came as no surprise when she began showing signs of magic, starting with her natural deep brown eyes turning a light blue over time. The island’s elders called it a blessing from their gods when she began to use basic water spells, much to her delight. She trained under the elders for many years, honing her skills as a water mage.
Her life was filled with fun and adventure, and her new found skills only seemed to improve that. She spent her days either lounging on the beach and practising her combat skills as part of her training, or out in the sea, either swimming and free diving below to collect shells, trinkets, and pearls, or skimming along the top on a special board that carried her over the waves, or from island to island on her small, two hulled wa'a kaulu. With the sails up high and the twin boats at her feet, sailing across the waves was as easy as the breeze.
Though her time in paradise seemed unending and wonderful, she always found herself staring off into the horizon, her mind wandering what lay beyond it. She knew she wasn’t from the Sapphire Chain, she had similar dark skin to her family and friends, but she didn’t quite look right. The Chain was her home, there was no doubt about that, but she always wondered where she came from, and who her parents were. Did she have some family somewhere out there that still lived? The elders always said she was destined to join them on the Chain, her love of the ocean and water, along with her natural born magical skills, convinced them of that, but it didn’t stop Mai’a’s curiosity.
So, a few years after she finished her training, she decided she wanted to travel. To see the world as others saw it. Her people were reluctant to let her go, but they knew that choice would eventually come, and denying her that would only have her go in secret. So, they ensured she was supplied, and gave her their blessing. She set out to see the seas aboard her wa’a kaulu, navigating by the sun in the day and the stars at night.
She would return and visit at least once a year, bringing with her tales of far away lands, fascinating people and their stories, and gifts for her friends and family. The locals always looked forward to the wanderers returning to their shores, but there always seemed to be a little more excitement in the air when the watchers along the beaches spotted Mai’a’s sails on the horizon.
Unfortunately, while Mai’a seemed to have all the luck, the world was a different story. Mai’a was away from home when the cataclysm struck, but between her expert sailing and natural magical skill, she managed to survive the initial floods that claimed so many around her. It took her months to return, but all she was greeted with was the tops of the higher hills of the island chain and the floating debris of what was once her home. Surely there would be survivors though? She searched, but found nothing. They had to have sailed off, so she would follow. She picked a direction, and with a hope and prayer she set off.
Weeks passed without finding any sign of her people, but she herself was quickly found by the dreaded Mist…

Mai’a pulled on the rigging and angled the ship once more, trying to pick up as much speed as she could. The new land she found herself in was as strange as it was foreign, but one thing remained the same, and that was the power of the sea. It stretched from shore to shore and even though it was clear enough, there was no telling how deep it went. Perfection.
Grinning from ear to ear, Mai’a scanned the horizon, making navigational notes and taking in all the landmarks to mentally map the new lands. She’d already passed a few boats as she sailed further into the inlet, but the designs were more of the northern design. Her search for her people may not have yielded results, but at least there were people!
She even spotted a settlement on her way in, but that could wait. The sun was high and bright, the skies as blue as her eyes, and the water shimmering and glittering in the afternoon sun. You couldn’t drag her towards land, the water was where she wanted to be. With every shift of the boat’s dual hulls a spray of water jetted up towards her, making her feel like she was home once more. Whatever the new land was… it would make a fine home.
The woman shifted her gait and tugged on the sail, shifting course once again, then again in the other direction, merrily snaking across the water’s surface with joy on her face and a laugh in her heart. She paused only to close her eyes and take a deep breath of the fresh, salty sea air.
Then something cut over the noise of her boat cutting through the water, forcing her out of her joyful trance. It sounded like a crack! She frantically looked all over her small boat, pivoting in place so she didn’t let go of the sail, but she didn’t see anything. Did she hit something on the surface? An errant branch? No, it didn’t come from her boat.
She quickly scanned the nearest shore but saw nothing, then she looked up. Her eyes went wide in shock for a moment, spotting a large bird plummeting down towards the water! No, not a bird… a person? With wings?! The new lands were already throwing brand new things at her!
Mai’a had no time to waste on trivial thoughts though. Instead she shifted the sail once more, turning the boat and picking up speed once more. She looked out over the side, watching the falling woman as her boat started to sail away from her, but not by accident.
Timing… the timing had to be just right or the falling angel would die, there was no doubt about that. Mai’a had trained for this - well, not quite this, but she was trained - and the new world’s wind and water were no different than the ones back home. She could do it.
“Wanau… guide my hand…” she muttered to herself as she watched, then before her mind could react her body did. With great strength that tensed all of her muscles, she fought against the momentum of the boat and pulled the sails and shifted her feet, changing the direction to circle around the falling woman.
The boat leaned and listed hard, bringing her closer to the water as she leaned further. She wrapped the sail’s rope around her extended forearm and pushed her free hand out towards the water. “Talk to me…” she whispered as her tattoos began to glow in bright aquas and blues, flowing over the lines like water over stone. The water spoke in a language she was fluent in, thank the gods above, even if it didn’t feel the same.
She opened her eyes and let the magic course through her. A current formed at her guidance, swirling through the water and gathering size and speed as the boat circled, then, when the timing was right, a geyser erupted from the water, all that momentum and speed channelled into an upward motion that pushed up and around the falling one. She’d be soaked, yes, but it would slow her descent.
“Bullseye,” Mai’a grinned as the water continued upwards, at least until the falling person could land into the water safely, gear allowing.

The first thing Givena noticed was the pain. Dull, aching pain throbbed through her shoulders and her back after the impact she had, taking up the forefront of her thought. The fall may not have killed her, but if it didn’t leave her with a good few bruises it’d be even more of a miracle.
The next thing she noticed, though, was the fact that she could notice. That she could think. It meant she wasn’t dead. Which, as far as she could tell, made no sense. The fall from that height should have killed her, unless it wasn’t as high of a fall as she first thought.
Her memory flashed in her mind, of what seemed like the water reaching up to greet her while she fell. At first she thought it was simply the delusions of a mind meeting its end. Now, she wondered if what she saw was true, and what had saved her.
Finally, Givena noticed one more thing. She was sinking.
Her eyes finally opened to see the shimmering ocean surface through her green-tint goggles, rapidly moving further and further away from her. Try as she might, she couldn’t make progress upwards to meet it once more. Her wings, she finally realized. They were what was keeping her from it, their weight too much to bring to the top.
It was a matter of moments before she began struggling at the straps, finally undoing them as she felt the weight lift and herself stabilize in the water. She turned around for a moment, watching as the culmination of all her work sank down, down, down into the ocean depths below. A pain formed in her chest. Whether it was the loss or the lack of breath was something she didn’t spend time pondering before she turned back around and started upwards. It pained her so to leave her finest work here in the sea, but it was preferable to dying here with it. She would just have to create an even finer piece one day.
Givena burst up from below the water’s surface with a loud gasp, basking in the fresh air she was almost deprived of. After a moment spent catching her breath she removed her goggles, finally noticing the vessel that had found her here. She squinted, unable to make out specifics of the person on the boat in the glare. She could tell, however, that it was moving, and very quickly. Right in her direction. "What the..." was all she had the time to mutter to herself, before the vessel was upon her.

Mai’a felt a sense of determined panic spool up inside her as she saw the winged figure sink under the surface of the water. “Come on now…” she grunted as she shifted the sail once more, trying to squeeze as much speed out of the wind as she could. Her relief when the figure’s head burst out above the water was a welcome feeling, but it did nothing to tarnish the steel of her resolve. Whoever it was still needed help all the way out there in the water.
Her boat sliced through the current under the woman’s guidance, pushing the water aside like a hot knife through the silkiest of butters. She shifted on the boat as she grew closer, trying to time everything just right. She wrapped a rope attached to the sail around her arm and pulled it tight before leaning hard to the side and over the side of the boat. She was practically parallel with the boat with a hand outstretched, the other still on the sail as she barreled towards the woman.
Her timing… had to be… perfect! She lunged out and clasped the waterlogged straggler’s hand in hers. Her grip was tight as she flexed a bicep and with a mighty heave she pulled the woman from the water as the boat zipped by. Mai’a pulled her aboard and quickly wrapped an arm around her waist, her other was still attached to the sail, to steady her on the boat’s deck.
“Kia Ora, fallen angel!” she called out with a hearty, triumphant laugh. “Welcome aboard!” She shifted and pulled at different parts of the sail and the boat started to slow and pull to the side and circle the area the angel had dropped from the heavens. Her grip around the woman’s waist loosened as the boat slowed, the need for haste coming to an end. “Are you alright?” she called out, eyes very much on the sail.
She finally let her go to stand freely on the deck as the boat came to a much more gentle speed. “I have never seen a woman fly before,” she said, not mentioning how it was more of a fall than a fly. “Then again, I’ve never seen a woman with…” she looked to the woman and raised an eyebrow. “...wings?” She turned to her and placed her hands on her hips, looking Gineva over. “...I swear you had wings, angel woman.”

“Oh gods she’s not stopping.”
Givena barely reached up in time to take her savior’s hand. The force with which she pulled her from the waters was enough to knock Givena’s breath away, or at least she assumed that was what it was. The fact she didn’t notice until after she saw the face of this woman holding her by the waist was surely just a coincidence. “Hm?” Givena asked, Mai’a’s words breaking her from her reverie. “Ah, y-yes. I’m fine.” She decided against mentioning the strange, unnatural-seeming heat consuming her face. She cast her eyes downwards as they began to slow, letting them fall away from her rescuer’s face and down to the muscular, powerful arm gripping the sail in an attempt to escape the weird feeling in her chest. Strangely it did not help. As they finally stopped, the chill of the ocean wind Givena felt as Mai’a’s warming embrace left her reminded her of just how soaked she was after almost drowning mere moments ago. It was strange just how much that felt like a lifetime ago.
Wait did this woman just call her an angel?
“Well, uh, my…” She stuttered, her legs feeling weak as she struggled to stand. She looked back at Mai’a’s face as she began to speak, but upon looking into her eyes the words died in her throat. It took a full second for her to remember she had to speak; this woman couldn’t read her mind. …Perhaps that was a good thing.
“Uh, right.” She finally got out, remembering how this whole situation even came to be. “Well they’re well on their way to the bottom of the sea right now, unfortunately. If I hadn’t ditched them after I fell, I’d be going down with them.” She shrugged, glancing down at the ocean’s surface. “It’s a shame, they were my best work. But I guess I’ll just have to build a new pair.” She looked back at this woman who pulled her from the water, trying to ignore the way her chest seemed to be doing flips. “A-anyways, thank you. For pulling me from the water. I honestly didn’t even think I’d survive the fall honestly, let alone the swim back to shore with all these bruises. So uh…yeah. Thank you…w-what would your name be?”

Mai'a listened for a moment, making a mental note about Givena's sudden rosy completion. "Fine aside for that sunburn setting in, eh?" She asked as she reached up and gently took the tinkerer's chin between her thumb and forefinger. She shifted her head from side to side to get a good look for just a moment. "Tsk. You should fly with a helmet, Angel, your face is far too nice for a burn. Or perhaps that rescue was just that impressive, eh! Haha!" She let go with a laugh before placing her hands back at her powerful hips, striking an impressive stance. Of course it was impressive! It went off without a hitch.
A smirk crossed her lip as she listened to Givena stammer and trip over her words, there was something almost adorable about it, like a baby turtle stumbling across the beach towards the water for the first time. They usually made it on their own, but sometimes they needed a little nudge when they roll onto their backs. The islander kept a close eye on the woman, so when her balance seemed a little off, Mai'a took her hand and gestured to take a seat on the deck. She sat with her without interruption, listening carefully as she crossed her legs before her. Whatever woman was able to sprout wings at will for certain had her attention.
Then her smirk slipped from her face as Givena told her story. Of course, a construct! She'd seen the inventions of those who lived in far away lands, some far beyond her imagination and comprehension, and all of them fascinating to Mai'a eye. For one to go missing in the endless blue? It would be an incredible waste. She lifted a finger, then stood and looked out into the water. "You can thank me in a moment," she said as she pressed her hand to her brow, shielding her eyes. "Stay here."
With that, she leapt from the vessel and into the water with perfect diving form. In the clear waters, Givena could probably see Mai'a dive down a few metres, then stop, as if looking for something. Then a light began to shimmer through the water, seemingly climbing up the tattooed arms of the islander, until they shone a series of beautiful marine blues and greens, which dispelled into a force that pushed out from around the woman, causing the water's surface to ripple outwards.
She remained still for several more moments before shifting, reaching out into the water. Currents shifted beneath the boat, streams of bubbles and particulate in the deep waters pushed and pulled with Mai'a's manipulation, until they all lined up. A splash erupted from the water far behind the boat as something breached, aided by a geyser of water, and it quickly skimmed across the surface directly for them.
A wave splashed against the boat, followed quickly by a heavy thump as Givena's wings landed on the deck.
Mai'a quickly surfaced beside the boat and gave a hearty grin. "I will not have your efforts wasted, Angel," she said before grabbing hold of the deck and pulling herself up with a flex of her impressive arms. She clambered to the deck and stood, not bothered in the slightest by her hair being matted down and how her wet clothes clung to her body, but then again they seemed as well suited to water as they were open air.
"Now you can thank me," she said as she offered her hand. "Mai'a Leilani."

Givena of Éledún
Established
Roleplay posts: 48
Age: ~23

Givena felt her heart stop as Mai’a took her chin in hand. Why was she getting so close? And why didn’t Givena mind it? “O-oh, my face is sunburned?” She stammered out, feeling her face. Strangely it didn’t hurt, it just felt very, very warm.
As she talked about what had happened(and narrowly avoided a heart attack when Mai’a took her hand to sit her down), she could feel a powerful sense of tiredness seeping its way into her veins, fighting the flustered feelings for dominance. She let out a sigh and looked down at the water. Not hearing Mai’a’s request to stay until she’d already jumped into the water.
The tinkerer quickly looked over the edge, watching as the woman’s tattoos began to glow. The odd feeling that had been pestering Givena’s heart soon became accompanied by something she was more familiar with. That strange mix of resentment and envy she felt whenever she found a magic wielder. Paired with whatever else she was feeling, it felt…wrong. She tried to push it away.
It wasn’t long before Givena saw the wings she thought lost fall onto the boat beside her. They were battered, mangled quite heavily. But, they were here, and they were salvageable. For that she couldn’t be more excited.
Givena immediately turned her attention to Mai’a as she breached the surface, watching in awe as she brought herself back on board. She tried not to stare as her clothes clung to her. “Uh, t-thank you. It means so much to me that you’d do that.” Givena said, taking the hand. “I am Givena, of Éledún. Your magic is quite impressive.” She said, changing subject. “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen hydromancy that worked quite like that.”

Mai’a let out a short chuckle, her hand giving Givena’s a gentle squeeze, but she doesn’t let go. “Don’t worry about it, Angel, it was nothing! The currents found them easily.” She smiled warmly at the artificer, that’s what they called them, right? Those technologically inclined folk from the big cities. Mai’a always had a thing for the smart ones, inventors and scholars, it was rare they gave her the time of day. Hopefully that was merely because they never crossed currents.
“Kia Ora, Givena,” she said, her hand still holding hers. Her thumb shifted over its texture, partly out of a habit, and partly to feel the texture. She wanted to believe she was the inventor, but any calluses would answer that for certain. Mai’a’s own made it obvious that she was a true sailor. “Chur mate, but I don’t think its as impressive as your flying machine, even if it did crash.” She nodded to the wings as she finally, and somewhat reluctantly, let go of her hand. “I’d love to see the next version. I’m no stranger to the sea, but the open skies, flying like a bird? Choice stuff, I’d rather be up there.”
She pointed up briefly before looking back to Givena. “Hydromancy, common tongue, eh?” she asks. “That’s what most call it, I guess it translates well. My gift doesn’t work exactly like most think it does, but those that understand I appreciate.” She reached out with hand, palm flat out, and her tattoos began to glow, travelling up each piece of ink until it reached the end, then her stunning blue eyes began to glow. The water from her outfit began to seep outwards, leaking from the fabric and travelling down her bare, muscular arm, until it formed a perfect sphere in her hand.
She allowed it to shimmer and roll her her hand before she placed her other hand atop it and it began to ripple. “I can create a little from the pool within…” Then her glowing eyes looked to Givena for a brief moment. “And not like that, ha!” Then back to the orb. It rippled and small specks began to appear. “But manipulating the water around me, that comes naturally, cuz. And just like that…” She pulled the orb upwards, leaving a fine layer of crystals in her hand. “Salt.”
With that, she cast the water back into the ocean with another chuckle. “Sorry Angel, I’m rambling now. Haven’t seen another soul in months.” With that, she placed her hand on Givena’s shoulder and gave her a wink. “You must be knackered after all that. Relax, take a moment to breath, and I’ll get you back to shore. Where do you wanna go?” She reached up and grabbed hold of the sail’s ropes and gave them a tug. With a little help of her magic, the strange boat began to move. “A good looking smartypants like you must have someone waiting, eh? Gotta be waiting on you, worried sick, hey?” she asked, looking out of the corner of her eye.
