Everyone looked at him strangely, with something akin to awe and disgust. He didn't want to loose what he had, so he kept his act up and made sure he appeared normal on the outside.
Once he found out about his fate, he fled his kingdom on a raft on the day of his sacrifice as people chased him to sacrifice him. He arrived to the isles clinging desperately to life.

In the newly found land the works of a new town was ready. Even though the settlement was only a few nice houses, one could tell something was in bloom. The river in the outskirts brought fish and enough water to plant. The forest nearby was littered with flora and fauna, close enough to touch. Perfect place for a botanist.

Eskil arrived with Ralf in a gray horse. He was at awe at how nice the place looked. Even something like him could appreciate the opportunity that could come from having this place as his abode. There where barely any people here, but that could change in a while. His horse was not as bit as the beautiful white horse Ralf had, but he wasn't going to complain after seeing this.
"Well it certainly exceeds my expectations." he said simply, looking around at the few houses and especially at the forest nearby." Looks like a place for research and studying. Hopefully I can do more than just build this place up."

Ralf nodded, pleased that Eskil liked the parcel of land. "There's only a few folks here at the moment, collecting what little they can. Carts arrive from the Twins every so often to collect the resources, and dropping off essentials if they need any. But given time, more will come. Children will be born, your estate will grow. It is up to you to lead them, manage them, enforce laws, judge them, and meditate disputes."
Ralf looked towards the forest. "Plenty of plants, animals, mushrooms, and more to collect. Explore at your leisure, document what you can. I would be very interested to know what you find. And please, tell me what you need to conduct your studies. I will be sure to visit you from time to time. Perhaps we can even go hunting together one day."
Ralf pulled an apple from a satchel on the horse's saddle, and then offered it to the steed. He patted it's cheek and then stroked its pristine white mane. "The Brothers gave this horse to me. Have you heard of them? The Knights of the Black Cross? No force has ever withstood the charge of the Knight-Brothers. They're unmatched in mounted warfare, and excellent on foot should the need arise. I plan to give them land on the frontier as well, so they will be your allies." Ralf looked to the forest again and pointed, "knowledge and adventure awaits. But so does danger. Enemies will come, and we must be ready. It will be up to you to protect your estate - and thus the Twins. You can train your own force here, or I can supply you with Knight-Brothers. What do you have in mind, Lord Eskil?"

Eskil smiled blankly." Well I think this is a wonderful place for some new changes. I can see why you see promise here. I promise I will make the best of this place." He got off his horse and tied it down. Looking around he fixed his vision on the people. He wondered how pliable the people here were.
"If these knights come from you, I suppose I can trust them. I'll need materials for building many many things, but those will come in time. I think I'll have a field day here. I can teach you my hunting ways if you want." He said, smirking at Ralf." I am glad you trust me with caring for this place. Opening your heart is the key for growth, if you didn't know."

"Oh, I do know," Ralf laughed, happy to know that Eskil was pleased. "The Knights are... they have their ways. You may find them cold and independent at first, but you will grow to respect them. They have lived hard lives; everything has been taken from them, they have nothing left to lose. They exist only to exact vengeance on those who would do harm." Truly, the Knights were mentally tormented; many had lost their homes, their wives, and their children. A few, however, were actually criminals. Some men were not keen on living a life imprisoned, or were hesitant to accept death. So they were given the choice to join the Brotherhood - to be born again and redeem themselves. Ralf could manage to send a few Knights here who would protect the place, and also train the villagers, not to mention counsel Eskil if necessary.
"I will leave you to it," Ralf told Eskil. "Expect to receive some Knight-Brothers soon."

North of Eskil's Estate a party of horsemen was observed. They rode atop barded white steeds; the sun glimmered off of their plate armor; banners fluttered overhead, displaying the Black Cross set upon a white background. At the forefront was Hochmeister Godwin, supreme commander of the Knight-Brothers. Footmen armed with pikes, crossbows, and other weapons followed behind them. The Brotherhood had seemingly fared well during the Flood; their ships were laden with supplies, and their forces already prepared for such endeavors - such was the way of these crusaders.
This small 'army' was headed towards Eskil's Estate at Ralf Valgard's commands. They were tasked with patrolling the Eastern March, and bolstering the defenses of the borderlords when necessary. That they were coming from the north indicated they were not traveling from the Twin Cities, no, they had already been active in the frontier.
As Godwin's retinue of knights and professional soldiers arrived they halted on the edge of the establishment. "I am Godwin," the man's voice was fierce and raspy. "Inform Eskil of my arrival. The Knight-Brothers are here."

Eskil watched them come in secret. He had asked a town's person to talk to them while he was getting squared with the place. He had some "errands" is what he told her.
The friendly lady told the horsemen."Mr Eskil is away for a while, he had some errands to tell you but he said he won't take more than a few minutes." Now for the moment of truth." Has the one who sent you here told you anything about Eskil?"
Eskil made sure to ask the person that was most likely to ask questions. Someone curious but innocent. Frankly this lady was perfect." I've seen him around, but I surely don't know anything about him."

Godwin groaned in frustration. He didn't have the time to speak to petty messengers. He was a man of action, and when something needed to be done expediently then that is exactly the way he intended for it to be done. He clutched the reins of his horse tighter. "Go find him," Godwin growled at the woman, ignoring her question. "Whatever errands he has can wait." Normally, Godwin might have retained some information so as to not alarm the townsfolk, but the enemy was on the move.
"There are orcs in the forests," he said, loud enough for others to hear. "They gather in the darkness and are preparing to strike at your home." He looked at the woman, his one remaining eye squinted, "now, go find Eskil. Unless, that is, you're keen on learning what orcs are capable of doing."

Eskil growled at the lack of information but decided to intervine. He pretended to come from farther away to seem like he just got there." Ah, newcomers quite a pleasant surprise. I'm sorry if I kept you waiting for too long, I've been distracted by this place."
He looked at Goodwin dead in the eyes with his hands behind his back." Are you the ones I heard where scheduled to come?" He asked, smiling emptily at the group.

"I expect Ralf did inform you of our eventual arrival," Godwin replied, his one eye piercing Eskil. The Hochmeister carried a certain aura of defiance and authority, and his raspy voice carried that well. "He must have also informed you of potential dangers on the frontier, Lord Eskil. I am Godwin, Hochmeister of the Knights of the Black Cross." He raised one hand to indicate the knights behind them. "These are the Knight-Brothers. There are halbruders with us as well: pike and crossbowmen. The orcs are closing in and before long they will come rushing out of the forest. We're here to help you fight them off."
Godwin took a quick glance at the townsfolk, but his piercing gaze immediately went back to Eskil. "If there are fighters among you, they may join our ranks, or you may lead them yourself. In any case, it is imperative you join us on the battlefield. We can defend from here at the risk of damage to your homes... or we can meet them near the forests edge and fight them in the field. What do you prefer?" As Eskil considered his response, Godwin would say one last thing: "remember. The Twins are watching."

"I am not much of a fighter. . . but I suppose I can help." Eskil said, staring coldly at the horizon. He could try to make a good first impression. He knew what killed people fast, he was slippery and he had found a knife on the ground." Give me some preparation time, I am sure i can be helpful."
He hurried onto the small town, and went to his quarters. He grabbed a match box and looked around for some ropes. In the time he was her he decided to find some way to deal with bigger threats. He had found the substance that could help him. When he had been a herbalist back in his kingdom, he had made a new substance that ended up being the key to his escape.
"Adhesive fire, I think we will have a fine time." He said, holding a flask of a strange brownish green liquid. He opened a box which had a few more flasks of the substance.

As Eskil scurried back into the town to collect his things Godwin began issuing orders. The camp followers, which included clerics, began to setup a camp on the outskirts of Bountiful Hollows. Tents were raised and fixtures assembled; food was being prepared as well, and all of the fighters present began to check their weapons and armor in preparation for battle. The clerics were non-combatants of the Brotherhood, but they provided a valuable service as healers, enchanters, as well as organizers; with their leadership the camp layout was quite efficient and organized.
The bulk of the allied force consisted of pike regiments and supporting crossbow regiments. The cavalry made up a third of the army, and consisted of the Knight-Brothers themselves as well as light cavalry. Those light cavalry units were tasked with scouting and would report back as soon as they saw enemy movement.
When Eskil returned he would find Godwin directing a number of subordinates. "Adhesive fire?" he asked inquisitively. Godwin was known for his hard and ruthless nature, but now his curiosity was piqued and now he seemed inclined to listen to Eskil. The Hochmeister waved an arm at some nearby squires who quickly brought a horse over. "Mount up... and tell me more about this adhesive fire, Lord Eskil." He was keen to learn exactly what this strange fellow had concocted, and what it could do.

As email returned he made sure to hurry just slow enough for them to analyze the place. In his little time seeing the camp he was already trying to come up with ideas on what the most vulnerable areas could possibly be. In case he needed to defend it or eliminate it.
He gave a smirk at Goodwin as he mounted his horse." Some time ago, I was studying a few flowers in my quarters. I didn't have a proper lab, but I worked with what I have. I discovered something when I tried making a sort of balm that gave protection for the sun." He said, making sure he was on correctly.
He stroked the beautiful fur of the creature." I saw it as a failed experiment. It was too runny, but also too sticky. It would stick to everything, leaving a thick layer of the stuff, and was very very sticky."
"When I tried cleaning it up, I dropped s candle next to it, causing it to ignite quickly. Not only did it extend the flame's burn time, it also made the fire much stronger than a mere candle light." He said, looking at the flask of brownish green liquid." After some modifications, this is what came out. I think I have an idea on how to use it."

"Fire, eh," Godwin said agreeably. He seemed to be thinking of his own ideas; perhaps if such a concoction proved useful in the battle he might seek Eskil's aid in the future again. "Since we'll be using fire... and an experimental weapon at that... we will deploy our forces away from the town. We don't want the flames to burn down everything you and your people have built. That being said," Godwin shrugged and sighed, "the alternative is burning the forest down. That's not exactly great either. We'll only be destroying resources, and running wildlife away." He shook his head. "This won't be good for your estate, Lord Eskil. And if it's not good for you, then it's not good for Ralf or the Twins."
Godwin led his horse to a sort of hill, the highest spot that his men could find. Some other important knights were also present. From here they could see the fields that rolled gently down to the forest's edge, where the orcs were expected to come from. Eskil would be able to see scores of pikemen and crossbowmen moving in squares onto the field. Various units of knights and other horsemen rode back and forth.
"This weapon of yours... can you control it? And if the forests catch fire, is that something you're prepared for? Can Bountiful Hollows survive if the countryside is scorched?" Godwin looked at the bow Eskil was carrying. He wondered if the liquid spread quickly, and how long it burned. Perhaps the substance was viscous enough that it would only cover a moderate area where the bottles were thrown, and so would not spread too much. In any case, he wanted to hear more about it from Eskil.

Eskil didn't seem bothered." You don't just have to throw it, you know?. It's versatile. I experimented with it. While it is devastating when thrown, it can be used far more precisely." He said, looking at the bow he had. He had had practice using one, but he hadn't really trained it. He will probably miss a good amount of shots, but that's what his experiment was for. "Watch." He dipped the tip of an arrow into his fanciest looking flask. This was his more refined version, which is less potent but far more sticky. he made sure to make multiple. He lit them with a match. He drew his bow and shot at a nearby dirt parch, where the fire won't spread. "I have enough to cover a small area. This can serve as a good test."
