A gull cried overhead as it flew away from the sea---and thunder head angrily rumbling in the distance. A gust of wind howled in the gull’s wake as if chasing the bird from the sea - desperately the bird dove into the hull of a ship long since dashed against a rock face…
The cliff face resembled a serpent swallowing the ship whole--- or at least halfway as the mast was stuck on the “snout” of the cliff….The once proud black sails flutter -tattered- in the buffeting wind.
The ship had been sleek, sharp and angular with all the grace of a predatory fish. Its shape spoke of a long forgotten speed , cunning and thirst for glory of a foreign nation never seen on the island, but there were no flags. The cliff face was far enough from the shore that even at high tide, only the belly of the ship would be touched by water-- and even a decent storm surge wouldn’t dislodge it from its resting place. There were several large holes in the ship large enough for a person to walk through unhindered should they wish.

Somewhere along the way, she had lost her way back to the ship and serving the man who had found her. Sure, he had kept her fed but it seemed like there were other things he needed to do and she wasn't of a mind to battle sea creatures at the moment with how much effort it took not to fall into the brine. She had gotten lost, but how would it not happen when the island was so disorienting that it was hard to figure out which way was up, down, left, right, or diagonal. The Duralam had at least been able to find small prey, she wasn't starving, her strength was coming back little by little. Something about the mist had caused a lot of things to go wrong.
She was currently flying about for a place to rest, for she was tired.
Upon espying the oddly placed ship, she frowned and tilted her head before preparing to land. She spread her taloned toes and slowly let her wings float her on down toward the opening at the side of the ship that looked big enough for her to get some shelter at least from the sun for the moment. Perhaps a nap would do nicely too. There was a satisfying click as her biggest talon touched the planks, and she soon disappeared into the darkness with ease. The bird woman waddled as a bird would toward the welcoming shade.

The strong smell of mildew and rot rushed the woman as she landed , her talons sinking into the soft wood. Pillars of light pierced the inky blackness that was belly of the ship- It was actually pretty empty inside this part of the ship, or seemed to be anyhow… Ransacked? Maybe…but there seemed to be an order to it all, as if it had been gone through with purpose not someone who “didn’t care” about the ship.
Despite the smell of rot in the air, it wasn’t that awful stench caused by decay of flesh, but the earthy one from mushrooms and fungus. Curiously the darkness only seemed to deepen if she turned to her right, towards where the stem of the ship would have been. To her left were stairs leading to what would be the second floor of the ship , perhaps the deck.

At first, she was just content in the way the scent of decay, not of corpses but forestry and such, perhaps. It wasn't unpleasant at all to her because she knew that rotting wood could provide grubs and such, which she liked to snack on from time to time. The thought of those caused her belly to growl. Damn, she should have hunted first. But she was tired. And then curiosity did get to her. She glanced out toward the stairs, glad she had the vision of a bird to see things better than most, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to even risk putting her weight on those, not yet anyway. She decided that now would be a good time to salvage whatever could be carried and make camp nearby. Adjusting her wings so they were folded neatly behind her back, she moved around, her hand against a no doubt slimy wall to keep her balance since walking with talons took effort.

With her wings folded it was much easier to move through the ship and her caution was rewarded when she stepped on a wooden plank- only for it to crumble under foot like wet sand… The slime covering the walls , as expected, was some algae or some other such plant based slime.
There were small bits of broken boards and other debris that might be useful for kindling strewn about the lower deck. Most of the ship was completely empty, not even the expected barrels or boxes were left opened --- except for one she found lodged under the ruined stairs.
It was small only about two hands across and two hands deep. The wood seemed largely unphased by the sea water, likely treated with oils. Still sealed.
Under what might have been a bench once upon a time there was a faint shimmer of metal covered by debris.
Lifting some planks , small crustaceans scurried away in terror , small fish were stuck in a notably deep hole , none larger than a human’s pinky finger but fish none the less.
With the smell of rot and decay slowly fading to the background of her aware senses, a new smell mingled with it. Animal , mammal of sorts… It was musk, very very faint but it was there, and smoke thought it wasn’t very strong.

She continued with caution. She gazed at the fish longingly, deciding that morsels to eat would be best served to be saved for later. And so, it was with some regret that she cast a look away, back once more, and then away again. She espied several things, her head tilting and cocking almost like a normal bird. She fluffed her feathers out slightly as if to push her along, and she peered through the darkness. Part of being an owl variety Duralam. Annnd part of being a bird also meant... "Oh," a shiny, she silently finished and moved to examine that first.
Her nostrils flared at the smell of smoke as she approached the shiny glint of metal. Upon closing the distance, she squinted her eyes and gazed intently, but did not touch without looking for signs of a trap first.

Caution , instinct and a bit of luck all aliened in that moment.
The glint of metal she had seen in passing was in fact a thinly stretched wire attached to some sort of mechanism attached to an oddly shaped cross bow, the limbs were near the grip , giving the whole device a W shape almost- With a broad headed bolt in the center - pointed to right where someone would be standing had they been too curious of the obvious chest.
It wasn't decrepit - the debris covering the device had been set in such a way it would readily function --- it had been camouflaged recently judging by the fresh "over turned" nature of some of the debris.

She looked intently as birds tended to do. She moved carefully to disarm the trap. Not only could she see about what was in the box, but she could take the crossbow as extra protection. One bolt was one bolt more than she had before. She had never really used a crossbow, however, so she would spend some time looking at it and checking the various mechanics of the object. Once she was successful, if indeed she was, she would be the proud owner of a weapon she did not have before. She was even careful to check for substances on the tip of the arrow. If there was poison, even better.
Once she was done with that, she moved to the chest and examined it. She knew that chests were usually locked and that might pose a problem. She checked for a lock, checked to see if it was rusty if there was one.
