On one of the largest islets south of the plains and the great valley is a slow moving river joining the sea. The freshwater cascades down a series of waterfalls and is lined by tangling mangroves. Moss clings to rocks, and sea grass sways back and forth to the motion of the waves. It seems peaceful here, and it's certainly sunny. Unlike the north, it feels as though the mist is the farthest away from this spot.

“Now this is the best view I’ve had in months.” Taidha whistled at the surrounding cascades as The Pearl Necklace approached an islet a bit removed from the larger island. She had to admit, despite her love for sailing she had missed solid land.
She turned to her crew; “We stop here for the day, look for supplies. If you find anything interesting, you know what to do.”
Taidha took a sizable sip of rum as she watched her crew leave the ship and make their way in different directions. She smirked. She was glad most of them survived, they were some of the best pirates Komali had seen.
“Uhm. Captain?”
Well, most of them were. Thaidha turned to see Donnie Barnes leaning over the edge of the quarterdeck, pointing below.
“There seems to be a mermaid passed out on a raft”
Taidha got closer to the assistant cabin boy and took out her spyglass. She looked in the pointed direction, there was someone passed out, but … She raised an unimpressed eyebrow at the boy.
“I don’t think this mermaid got the whole memo about having a tail and gills Barnes.” She said, gesturing to the person’s legs.
Donnie Barnes did a double take, then turned red from embarrassment as he muttered a small “oh.”
Taidha rolled her eyes. At least the boy was amusing. She briefly considered her options; they seemed to be a castaway so they wouldn’t have much intel on the land or resources. They also didn’t seem to have much with them, she did take note that their clothing bore some resemblance to that of Anvalian farmers though. However, the person did appear to have some swords on them, maybe they could use them well. With Avalon and Diego gone, Taidha did not mind getting more sword-wielders as allies. At the very least, she hoped that the stranger would alleviate her boredom. Taidha smirked, having made a decision.
“Take them to my office,” she ordered Barnes, “Bring me their weapons too.”

Appearance: It is, at first, difficult to make out Roman, as they are often dwarfed by their hakama and large, pleated pants. A head of long black hair, often covered by a wide-brimmed straw hat, doesn't help to wipe away their anonymity. Beneath the layers, one can find a tan-skinned youth with warm eyes and gentle features. Rather average in height, Roman sports an impressive build beneath, but appears rather unassuming and delicate otherwise.
A mark, pale and splotchy, stretches from the right underside of their jaw down their shoulder, past a shoulder blade, to their wrist. It isn't immediately apparent if it's a scar or a birthmark.
________________________________________________________
Equipment: A wakizashi, katana, bow and arrow, skinning knife, small water gourd, coin pouch, food pouch, spyglass, roll of bandages, and a bottle of lotus oil is all the ronin brought with them to the new world.
_____________________________________________________________
Skills and Abilities: Though they are a skilled swordsman, Roman's best feat shows itself in conflict aversion. Be it disappearing silently or deflecting aggression, the drifter finds it easy to slide out of trouble. Or so it was, back in the old world.

When they awoke, it was in the middle of being manhandled. They didn't know what, who, or why, but the ronin didn't much enjoy it. Despite this, they were exhausted, sunburnt, and starved, and could barely reach for their weapons, let alone draw them. They kicked their legs weakly to no avail. Every word the people around them spoke was muddy as if they were underwater.
Before they knew it, a door creaked open, and they were thrown in, sliding across the deck like a penguin on ice. The world spun as though it were a whirlpool of paint. It spun so fast it swished the seawater right out of their stomach and deposited it onto the floor.
All they could do was sit up and breathe, watching their vision steady. For a moment there, the ronin swore they were surrounded by ten women. As time passed, all ten of them fused into one. The stranger raised a brow and blubbed:
"Hanji? Common? Tonuao?"

Taidha watched, amused, as her new guest got thrown like a pitiful fish into her office floor. Though she would have preferred her floor to remain seawater free. Whatever. She’d have the assistant cabin boy clean it up later. Taking a closer look at the stranger, she had two observations:
First, while they had delicate features, the stranger definitely had a strong build under the layers of cloth they wore.
Second, their two swords looked worn, they had been used a lot. Combining both of her observations, Taidha concluded that the stranger had experience with those swords. Of course, there were other possible scenarios; the swords could’ve been stolen or they were given to them. But, her guest’s strong build suggested that at least they had some combat experience. They could be useful in exploring this place.
She finally looked down at the stranger, chuckling at their raised brow.
“Common will do just fine.” She said, “Now, given that we found you floating near the shore, I don’t suppose you’re from around here, are you?

Noting the woman's answer, the stranger surmised that they weren't close to home. Were they still near the docks of Maveda, they wondered? No, what they saw of the trees was too different. Where had they ended up after that terrible storm, then? And who were these people? This woman looked cold as steel as she looked them over. Well, she had to be the captain.
"...no," they replied, looking her in the eye, even as they swayed on their knees upon the floor. "Where is... around here?"
Their words swam with an accent, twinged with the short vowels of their home language and the drawl of lands juxtaposed to it, marking the colorful speech of a fellow well-traveled.

Taidha raised an eyebrow. A disappointing answer, alas not a surprising one. “My guess is as good as yours.” She kept her gaze on the stranger. “We found this island after the big storm threw us off course.”
The Captain squinted her eyes. The stranger’s accent was not one she recognized, a surprising feat given she had traveled all over the known world, having contacts in the few places she couldn’t personally go to. Interesting.
“If you are not from here, where are you from?” Taidha poured herself some rum, eyeing the swords now. “And where did you get such beautiful weapons?”

Ah. So this stranger also didn't know where they were. Perhaps they were in a completely different country? It would not be the first time the spirits of the earth and sea decided that the ronin was needed far beyond the horizon. They stood on wobbly legs, bracing themself against the wall, and looked Taidha eye to eye and found her just a hair taller.
"Luhua," they answered. "That is my homeland, but I have been in Maveda for many years. My weapons-" They glanced down at their swords, one long and one half its length. Indeed, they were gorgeously crafted, not just in function, but in craft. The pommel was engraved with cherry blossoms, while the guard was carved to look like bellowing smoke. The details were finely carved and immaculate. When Roman turned the handle, it revealed something barely visible behind the silk ties: the mean glare of a Fu dog. Their expression softened. "Made by an old friend. The best smith I know."
They lifted their chin, looking up at the captain again. "I'm T-" They paused, then scratched the back of their neck as they stumbled over their words. "Roman. People call me Roman."

Ah yes, Luhua, Maveda. Those were definitely two places that Taidha had never even heard of. Could the stranger be an unknown continent? What would be the chances her crew would get stranded on the same island as someone from an unknown land? Then again, she had seen weirder stuff happen. She would keep her theories for herself for now.
Upon the stranger’s mention of their weapons, she chuckled. “Poetic and vague. But, I can tell you treat your weapons well. I respect that a great deal.” Even long before she met Diego, Taidha maintained the belief that one must take good care of their weapons. Having a talking sword in her crew only solidified this belief.
Her guest stumbling over their words did not go unnoticed by Taidha. “People may call you that, but is that how you want to be addressed?” She took another swig of rum. “People call me different names but here, I am addressed as Captain Kensington.” Taidha motioned around her and added, “Welcome to The Pearl Necklace. Would you like some rum?”

The samurai's cheeks reddened as their gaze hit the deck. They held their swords just a smidge closer. "They... they mean a lot. As more than just blades," they told her softly. It was rare their weapons, and by extension, their care for them, were so respectfully complimented. Too many people grabbed at them and poked their noses in places they didn't belong. This woman did nothing of the sort, even though they were an intruder on her ship.
Especially surprising was her asking for the name they wanted to be called by. The swordsman looked up, lips parted in surprise. This wasn't a trick? Or maybe it was. The spirits of old hadn't forgotten them, no matter where they were. All the same, they smiled.
"For now, just Roman. What is rum?"

Taidha was not a woman who ever got surprised, or lost composure. She was known across all of Komali for her ability to lead under the most strenuous circumstances and always came out on top. She had seen everything; from Leviathans, an actual nice Winterlight, sarcastic talking swords, to Komali’s ugliest dog thing. But she could not help but make a look of disbelief - for the smallest second - when she heard Ronan ask her what rum was. She quickly masked it and addressed the samurai.
“Ronan it is.” She poured some rum into an empty glass and motioned them towards it. “And rum is the kind of drink that makes life worth living. Feel free to have some, though I would recommend drinking it slower than water.”
Taidha then started heading towards the door. “Now please do follow me. I believe we have much to discuss.”

Roman took the cup and smelled it. It stung the back of their nostrils, much like the wine they were given in the countries they visited overseas, but it didn't smell like fruit as wine did. "Makes life worth living..." they repeated, and they were only a little dubious when they said it. With a shrug and a small scrunch of their lips, they took a sip of the beverage.
Their face grew red as they played with the liquid in their mouth. A war was waging in their mind as they tried not to spit out the spicy water or make a face saying they wanted to do so. With all the strength they could muster, they swallowed it, but the cough tickled at the back of their throat was suppressed.
"... yes," they wheezed, following her.
