Surrounded on all sides and hidden away deep in the city is a tall, round building covered in moss, sea grass, and kelp. There are etchings beneath the foliage of what were finely painted murals, but the brine of the sea has washed them away into nothing but splotches. A platform for what might have been an impressive statue, or perhaps a place to hold forum, lies in the middle of the room. It is here that the brood is hidden away, the last legacy of every variant within the Tueima family.

Echo
New
Roleplay posts: 5
Age: True Age: Unknown
Maturity level for cycle: 18-20
Appearance: Echo consists mostly of a translucent gelatinous bell-like body. While she is mostly transparent, she has bioluminescent "veins" that outline her body and gives it a visible shape. The top of the bell would be recognized by land-dwellers as a maiden dressed in a gown, though atop of her head is not hair, but additional stingers and a long cap that when its unfurled looks like a veil that protect the delicate upper portion of the bell. She resembles like a ghostly bride except instead of legs under the folds of the skirt, she has long frill-like oral arms and gracefully swaying tentacles.
Skills and Abilities: Even at her fastest, Echo is fairly slow. In spite of this, her travel speed is consistent and energy efficient which in theory gives her the ability to travel longer distances on less resources.
Her Tentacles contain potent venom that will paralyze when injected. It will start by paralyzing muscles, but without an antidote quickly leads to the paralysis of vital organs and eventually death.
Echo can regenerate parts of herself if they get cut off or damaged. If a chunk of her bell is missing, she can re-arrange her anatomy to become symmetrical.
If she has starved too long, or has taken irreparable amounts of damage, her body will break itself down back into a polyp stage. If this happens, all memories she has had are erased, and effectively, she has to go through all development stages over again.

Among the colorful splotches over the stone, the skelp and seaweed, dozens if not hundreds of round jewel-like eggs lined the walls and rows of the forum. Hidden in alcoves for the ones who must stay away from too much light and currents, or resting in kelp hammocks along the columns for the ones who needed constant flow and light. While eggs weren't exactly great conversationalist, they still needed constant watch and upkeep. If they lose some of these eggs, for some Tuema even losing one egg would have devastating consequences, the end of an entire family lineage.
Echo herself was in that boat, from what her elders had told her. Ever since she was assigned to help guard the nest, she took her job seriously, as boring as it could be. Patriarch had gone elsewhere, so she was inside, some kind of paddle in hand reminiscent of the oars from the land walkers which she used to stir the water over the eggs that did not get as much current. All the while she was keeping a mental count of each egg. The task had practically become second nature by now, almost distracted as, once again, nothing changed. There was one where the Tuema fetus had not squirmed in a long time. At first she was concerned, had it not made it? Then as if on cue it would vigorously squirm in its sac and then go dormant again, bringing with it a sense of relief. Nothing changed.
Except something did change in the next clutch of eggs. There were supposed to be 6 eggs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. That couldn't be right. Now Echo really woke up, an egg was missing, on her watch. Oh no, an egg was missing on her watch.
There was a moment of panic as she recounted once, then another time for good measure. Still only 5. Maybe it got.. misplaced, surely that was it. She searched the alcove before and after, but each had the right number of eggs. She even checked under all the eggs to be sure it was just hiding. The jellyfish woman scrambled to look for the missing egg, at first not finding it until, from the corner of her eye she noticed something move. Approaching it carefully, she was prepared to come face with an egg-eating fiend, but instead what she found was... The egg! with a tail coming out of it. The little tail squirmed and thrashed as it was trying to escape its confinement, but by doing so it was sliding along the floor.
Echo exhaled with relief as she picked up the hatchling still buried mostly in its own egg. With a smile she carried it towards its appropriate family, setting the egg down among its siblings. two snails with spiky shells were stuck on each side of the alcove and a net of kelp was strung between them. That would hopefully prevent the hatchling from escaping from the alcove until it was fully hatched.

Patriarch
Established
Roleplay posts: 49
Age: A few hundred years or so.
Appearance: Patriarch is a sea elf, the last of his kind, or he was in the old world. While he looks youthful he carries an ancient soul that has known countless tragedies. Where in some this might have bred cynicism in Patriarch it bred compassion and kindness. After losing so much he decided to dedicate himself to helping others as much as he could. This eventually led to him becoming an Egg Bearer or in his case more of an Egg Protector. Dedicating himself to protecting and guiding the youth of the younger races of Fishfolk, steering them away from the path that led to the doom of his race.
----------------------------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Sea elves are exceptionally long-lived, possessed the innate magical talent to manipulate water, could breathe on land or sea, and were quite harder as they can survive at the depths of the ocean.
In the new world, Patriarch has found that his ability to manipulate water drastically reduced and he can no longer perform auguries or scry. A learned specialty from when he used to be an advisor to the king of the sea elves. But he remains hale and hearty as ever or so he thinks, he does sense some change within himself. Like the water in the vast sea of years he had before him was dwindling to more of a puddle.

Patriarch oriented his head toward the roof of the nursery as he approached. His movement through the water was not as swift as it had once been but he still moved with considerable grace thanks to his hydromancy. Propelling him through the door at a gentle drift as his gaze swept over the nursery. All seemed well at first glance but as his gaze landed on Echo and the net she'd just finished settling the newborn.
"Did one of the little ones hatch?"
For the moment his current task was forgotten as he moved over to peer into the side alcove. The sight of the small egg with the tail sticking out, the little one now being added by its siblings in removing what was left of the shell.
"Wonderful."
Patriarch said though his lips didn't move, he used a form of high-pitched noises he let out through his gills and a bit of telepathy to communicate while underwater. It worked well enough for the old sea elf.
"You are doing excellent work Echo. I came down to let you know we had some visitors from another settlement, we will be throwing a feast in their honour. If you wish to attend I will be happy to watch the nursery by myself."
He'd been to plenty of parties in his long life and while Echo could say the same, her current cycle hadn't had much opportunity as of yet to his knowledge. Perhaps she'd enjoy the chance to see what old memories came to the surface.
"Oh, and Paragon sends his regards."

Echo abruptly turned at the sound of Patriarch's voice, her stingers and bell twisting and wrapping around itself before flaring out again.
"Yes! Well- Hatch{i]ing[/i]- But basically the same thing.." Echo anxiously replied, not wanting to draw attention to the escape since it didn't seem like he was around for that at least. She watched Patriarch as he hazarded a look for himself. She was used to the way the man communicated. He was unlike any of the Tuema, but he'd always been around from her perspective. Like a constant, he'd been reliable, dependable, calm.
The Guardian smiled, only a faint bioluminescent outline of lips to show it, as he praised her work. Visitors from another settlement? That could still happen? "A feast!" There was excitement in her voice as she repeated. "Wait- Are you sure? Because- One hatched, and more might hatch, and if a lot of them hatch at once you're going to need the hands but-..." It was clear that while she wanted to go, she also took her role seriously.
And then, all that excitement swam away with the current when Patriarch brought up Paragon.
"... This was his idea, wasn't it?" she asked rhetorically and flatly. "Then I'm not going. I don't need a pity invite from him of all people." she grumbled and "busied" herself with more of the eggs instead, as if tempering the excitement now turned disappointment.

The sudden shift in Echo's atitude wasn't missed by Patriarch who looked her way with a slight frown on his features. Paragon was certainly struggling to live up to the legacy of his father but he'd not known Echo was so poorly disposed to the lad. Which was unfortunate since that disposition was putting her in a situation where she'd deny herself pleasure out of spite.
"It was not his idea to invite you but he did want to check up on you. But I will not insist you go to the feast if you do not wish to."
Tending the nursery was certainly a lot of work but he could manage that himself. He'd rather she go since he thought it would be good for her but he wasn't going to give her unasked for advice, there was no surer way to get someone to resist the tide than to try and change their mind about which way it went.
"I am sure we can have some food brought down to us and we can have our own little feast here."
Patriarch said as he got to work checking on the clutches of eggs. There was always something to do in the nursery even if it was just small little tasks to keep the eggs as safe as possible.

Age: Unknown, but much older than she appears
Appearance: Pip's main body is thin and lithe, sporting a long tail that curls at the end instead of a pair of legs. From that tail to the top of her head grow a number of long leaf-like protrusions. They offer her no propulsion, but they do offer her fantastic camouflage, especially with their ability to change colors. A small pair of dorsal fins sit on the sides of her hips, allowing her to travel gently through the water to give off the illusion of floating seaweed.
The tip of her tongue is barbed and poisonous, as are several of the leaflike protrusions on her body, which inject venom in a similar manner as a jellyfish.
_______________________________________________________
Skills and Abilities: Once a swift and deadly warrior on the front lines of every battle, Epiphany sustained an injury that kept her from her soldiering duties. Over time, she went through a change in both body and mind, becoming a shadowy rogue that defended the homefront from attackers who managed to slip by the new vanguard. Her ability to camouflage is frighteningly good, and though she cannot move swiftly over large distances, her knowledge in weapon training has never gone to waste.

There were more than a dozen murals and sculptures carved right into the ruins of the nursery, one of which was a scaled ring on the inside of the drum. While Echo and Patriarch weren't looking, that ring began to move. Around and around it went, slithering down towards the caretakers, until a hand dipped down to run its fingers through Patriarch's hair.
"My, my," laughed a deep, feminine voice. "I did not expect a visit from you, Patriarch, though it is Echo you've come to see."
Little by little, from head to tail, the figure revealed itself, shifting from the mismatched painted marble to the rich greens and reds of the kelp outside, the effect like sequins flipping from one side to the other. She was a sight to behold, with a tail long like an eel but winged with leafy fins to mimic sea foliage. She was older, certainly, but sea folk did not procure wrinkles like the land folk did. Instead, she was covered in battle scars, thick grooves that ran past her scales down to the flesh.
She snaked down past the sea elf in a spiral towards Echo, smiling. "My dear, a feast will be a good way to stimulate your mind. Spending time with eggs and fry endlessly is hardly a good way to spend your time and enrich yourself." The woman circled the translucent caretaker, hovering close, but never touching her. "And there will be outsiders. Why don't you display to them the beauty and strength of the Tueima?"

Echo figured Patriarch wouldn't push her beyond the initial "No". He always preferred going with the flow instead of trying to find a way to fight it. Herself she was often at the mercy of the currents, but she always tried, trained and persevered to fight against it and to change the tide. If not for herself then for others to have an easier time.
Patriarch mentioned having food sent down instead, but the jelly-Tueima seemed more distracted in her thoughts. Perhaps still fuming at Paragon, perhaps thinking of something else entirely that had her preoccupied. So much so she didn't noticed the swirling and moving mural ring until it spoke out loud. She turned at attention towards the all too familiar voice as she immediately saluted one of their heroes and oldest veterans.
"E-Epiphany! How long were you there for??" she asked in a startle. She followed with her eyes the slowly swirl of the older warrior. Unlike Patriarch she was urging her to go to the feast. Echo crossed her arms. "Well if you want to show them the strength and beauty of the Tueima, you should send..." She couldn't bring up Cutthroat without it feeling like one of her own stingers got stuck in her throat. "-Then you go. You qualify more than me." she argued.

While Patriarch's expression didn't betray it, the way his eyes snapped to Epiphany as her fingers ran through his hair said it clearly enough. She'd managed to escape the keen senses of the sea elf, perhaps they were finally starting to fade in his old age? Patriarch decided he'd rather believe Epiphany was simply that skilled. It wasn't as though he'd never been startled before, it was just a rare thing. He shouldn't be so worried.
"I spend most of my time here, why would you not expect a visit Epiphany?"
Patriarch asked, a certain sharpness in his tone. There was, he could think, one particular reason she might have expected him not to visit today at the very least. If she'd assumed that Paragon would have foisted the duty of seeing to their guests onto Patriarch. The old sea elf well knew many Tueimas held a poor view of the boy for not living up to his father's legacy. A view that Patriarch did not take kindly to, he had a fondness for Paragon the lad was good-natured, even if he was a bit... anxious.

"Longer than you were expecting. There is too much buzz and bubble during the day for me to keep up with, so I came here for a nap." Epiphany grinned as she continued to circle the immutable defender before her. With the tip of her finger, she tapped the space between Echo's eyes. "Otherwaters do not want to see a dull, hidden assassin as much as the assassin does not want them to see her, Shining One. They would rather cast their eyes to the most vibrant and celebrated of us, and who else would that be if not you?"
It was true that Cutthroat would have been another good candidate, but her sour and sarcastic remarks often left a deep impression on strangers. Not only that, but indeed, the huntress had been missing for quite some time. "And, since they are from outside, perhaps they have seen things we have not. It would not hurt to ask, yes?"
With the grace of an eel, she spun through the water toward the sea elf in an arc, so she was facing him upside-down. Her stripes fluttered into a shade of pink. "It was a jest, Old Scales, about how little I see you visit me. Of course, it swam over your pretty head." She flitted away with a chuckle.

Echo gave her superior a look that begged her not to pursue the issue, but then she had to bring in her duty into it and now she felt the dread of obligation bubble out. Her mouth released a flurry of smaller bubble as a sigh. "Fine. I'll go. But only to civilly question the Otherwaters, then I'll be right back at my post. I'll bring back some food for you Patriarch, I'll make sure of it." She turned to the sea elf and bowed out of respect to her perceived elder.
Epiphany was giving him a hard time in jest, but Echo couldn't help but come to his defense. "Ever since supervision over the fry became more... dire, he's been quite occupied. He means no personal disrespect."
The Jelly woman noticed she had been drifting in one of the currents that ran through the nursery. She pulsed her Bell and caught back up with Patriarch and Epiphany. "... When is the banquet? Will I have enough time to find something to wear?" she grasped at last ditch excuses not to go.

Epiphany pushed where Patriarch wouldn't and that made the old sea elf frown lightly. While didn't disagree that Echo should attend the feast since he thought it would be good for her, he didn't want to force her to go. In his experience, a person who went to an event because they were coerced often made the decision to not enjoy themselves before they arrived. While he trusted Echo to be polite to the newcomers he'd rather she be delighted by them then approach them out of duty.
Patriarch held himself back from arguing on the matter though. Echo was no longer a hatchling and he would not fight her battles for her. If she asked for his support he'd give it but true strength of character was not developed by having another step in without a request for intervention. Which was why he held up his hand when Echo defended him to indicate that he wished for their to be peace on the subject.
"Perhaps your jest did go over my head. Or perhaps Echo is correct and the tide flows both ways Epiphany. If I'd known you missed my council I'd have made time for you as I make time for all the Tueima."
After all, Patriarch viewed them all as his children. He spent most of his time with the young ones who needed his care and guidance the most. But he knew that the elder sea folk sometimes needed council just as much. Of course, if they never approached him to let him know his duties did keep him busy in the Nursery, which made him rather easy to find. So perhaps Epiphany had missed something as well.

The assassin chuckled, causing every leaflet on her body to shake. She passed a hand through the water to dismiss the notion of disrespect. "Such is what I understand, for I only meant to tease, Echo." She looked to Patriarch to answer the jelly's question before waving her off with a hand. "Be on your way. Enjoy yourself."
Turning to the sea elf, Epiphany swirled around him and rolled her eyes. "Then I shall ask for your council more often, Patriarch. At least now we have plenty of time to ourselves. What has the young prince gotten himself up to? The king's guppy." Coming to rest beside him, the tueima rested her chin in the palm of her hand. "He is much like his grandmother, don't you think? I see it in him each day. Let us hope he does not drive us into ruin the same way."

Echo gave Epiphany a salute before making herself scarce. She understood When Epiphany and Patriarch needed to speak in private. Her bell expanded and contracted, pushing herself forward through the water. Once she was out of the Nursery, the obvious shift in temperature and currents flowed over her membrane, causing an initial ripple followed by a sort of stabilization. She let out a frustrated sigh.
"Why does he Always stick his nose where it doesn't belong? Every. Single. Time." Echo grumbled as the idea of having to mingle with Paragon turned her off from the whole party. Think of it as a mission She knew Epiphany would tell her. The Jelly let the cap above her head unfurl to its full length acting almost like a ghostly veil covering over her body, as she travelled towards the heart of their society.

Patriarch

Echo left leaving Patriarch alone with Epiphany. The question that came next didn't surprise him much. The issue with letting out a sigh underwater is that it just created bubbles if he used his mouth. It was a damn hard thing to manage underwater. The vast array of vocalizations available to him above water was one of the few advantages of leaving the sea but he made do with a long-suffering look that said much of what he thought about the question.
"I think that so many are hoping that he will become his father that the boy is barely allowed to be himself. He is currently establishing diplomatic ties with some sea folk from another tribe."
He knew well what Epiphany thought of Paragon's grandmother and what she was angling at with the question. It was a view that many of the Tueima shared, the worry that another leader who valued diplomacy would take the reigns and their people would have their blood spilled without retribution. Never mind that far more of them had died fighting in Legend's wars than had been felled during Sentry's reign.
