Somewhere to the Northeast is a beautiful river dotted with islands and a small waterfall.

She lay on the bank of some river she didn't recognize, her eyes closed against the bright light of the sun. She'd been there for a time, it seemed, untouched, unbothered, though not in the deliberate sense. Viessa lay on her back, her arms splayed out as if ready to be sacrificed.
The wind tickled at her face and she could hear the roar of the falls off in the distance. Was she dead? For whatever was going on, she was at peace at the moment... content not to move, not to open her eyes.

When Renaux went scouting for people on the back of Neige it was usually the pegasus that managed to spot them. Sure, he had a little spyglass to observe the ground and look for things of note but the pegasus had eyes that could see the ground as clearly as a hawk. His steed gave a whinny to grab his attention and he followed her gaze with his lens until he spotted what had caught her eye.
"Could be dead but we will check to be safe."
Snapping the lens close he pocketed it securely in his belt and then guided Neige down to the ground. Or more, gave the command to let her know that was what they were doing since she knew better than he how to land. Her hooves hit the sand lightly and he slid from the back of the horse to approach the prone figure slowly.
"Excuse me, are you alright? Do you need some help?"
The questions were directed at the woman but his gaze was on the treeline. There was always the possibility for some kind of trap or the like and he'd rather not be caught off guard.

There was a whimper... where did it come from, she wondered? She then realized it was a noise she must have made if she could hear it over the waterfall. There too was a voice, a masculine one, coming from close by. The young woman slowly opened her eyes, but they kept closing rapidly again and again until she finally managed to pry them open. She peered up at the man and took a moment to work her tongue against the roof of her mouth.
"Water?" she had such a soft voice as he might not hear her at first, but he would certainly see her mouth moving and her eyes opening.

It was clear that she was either a far more convincing actor than most or she truly was in desperate need of help. Renaux was not so weary that he couldn't believe the latter and if there were others waiting to ambush him, he was sure he or Neige would have spotted something by now.
"Of course."
The knight said as he knelt down next to her and pulled his flask from his belt. He helped her sit up and offered it to her, if she needed help he'd even go so far as to tip it back gently against her lips but he didn't assume she needed such aid.

She shook against his arm as she took a tentative drink from the flask, her arms feeling like leaden weights as much as her legs did. She drank until she choked, then forced herself to slow down. Nothing came out to attack, not beast nor person. She didn't drink too much because she knew her stomach would cramp if she did, so she put her hand up slowly. He would be able to see the sores from the shackles she had been bound to before she found herself in a new world.
Viessa then murmured, "Many thanks."

"Of course mademoiselle."
Renaux said as he waited for her to finish drinking without a word. His gaze noted the marks from shackles and her obvious fatigue. It was clear that her coming to these strange lands had been more trying than most.
"I do not know how much of your present situation you are aware of. But this is a land of stray souls, from what I've observed looking for new arrivals the mists bring people from all over and abandons them on these shores."
He informed her. Some people had come escaping floods, some like him had just been caught in a strange fog, but the story was always the same. One moment you were in your own world, the next you were travelling through the mists for minutes or sometimes days, and then you were here.

"To be honest, I thought I had died..." she winced as she felt her shoulder where she thought the blade had plunged, but there was no sticky feeling of blood, only soreness. She struggled to sit up, looking down at her ragged appearance. How long had she been there? She said, "One moment, I was shackled to an altar about to die, the next moment, I am waking up here. I thought for a moment that I had died but I feel very much alive."

"Honestly, it is entirely possible you did die. There is a chance that this is some sort of purgatory though, if so, this new life is very much like the old." Renaux said with a shrug of his shoulders. It did not feel like death, but what did death feel like? Gauldin hadn't had a formal religion, they'd a sort of spiritual philosophy of wisdom shared by the spirits of air and wind that had endured through the ages but that had mostly had temples and sacred sites rather than churches and masses. However, he'd heard some religions promised life after this one, perhaps they'd just been optimistic about it being a better one. Either way, he could have easily been struck by lighting travelling through a cloud and just not realized it so he hadn't ruled it out.

"Hmm," said the young woman as she used the moment to repair her appearance a little bit at least. First, she handed back the water after having her fill, which wasn't a lot because she did not wish to cramp... then she splashed cold river water on her face, dispelling cobwebs too from her foggy brain. "I see," she went on to say, even though she didn't really see. But it didn't matter, all that did at the moment was that she was alive in a way, she thought. She was still breathing and her heart was still beating. That had to mean something, right?

Renaux suspected that she did not, in fact, see. Then again, he probably shouldn't have waxed philosophically about the question and just answered her honestly.
"You are not dead. I came to these lands riding the back of Neige, my pegasus." So unless this place could mend stab wounds when you were brought to it he doubted she'd been sacrificed, something he should question her about but that could wait. "We are, however, stranded."

"Stranded?" she asked, pausing mid swipe and looking up at him. She seemed a little more there after washing the cobwebs of sleep away, but she also seemed quite lethargic, which had to have been from the fog. She cupped her hand in the water and gave her face one last splash before standing up and moving closer to him. She eyeballed the pegasus, wanting to touch but at the same time, frightened of equine types for their size. "Why do you say we are stranded?"

"Because, while there is a fair bit of land in this area it is cross-able by pegasus within four days of travel. This is naught but a large archipelago of islands. If you head out a few miles away from shore you eventually hit a wall of mist, no matter what time of day, no matter what direction I've tried the mist. Not that it would help since I have no idea what direction the main land might even be. So, yes, we are trapped."

Trapped had seemed like an understatement at the time of her meeting the man with the Pegasus. She spent the next amount of time wandering about and decided to find her way back to the place with the waterfall. The next months were spent learning the lay of the surrounding lands. Viessa was like a sponge when it came to information. It soon became clear that she would be alone and had to make peace with it for a time. Once she figured out where she would begin to build a shelter...
At first, it started with a lean-to. She relied on her knowledge of plants to cultivate a garden, expanding it as she found new plants that she saw the wildlife eating. Then, too, she planted flowers from the ones she found in the wild, and so on. There were a lot of trial and error situations as she started working on trapping small animals for her supper. The longer she stayed, the more effort went into her shelter. She was working on digging out the side of the hill nearest her camp.
Viessa had nothing better to do with her time than work day in and day out to fend for herself and was content to live out her life in solitude. The hill happened to be right up against the river, the intended door dug from the side opposite in case of floods during the wet season. It also served as a buffer for the wind, even as the half finished structure seemed like it would be bothersome. There too was utilizing the hillside for more gardening. Every now and then, a random stranger would come along and stay if she let them. They would often help her work if they were able to, showing her other techniques, trading things for her foodstuffs if they couldn't help otherwise, or simply just passing the time with her by the fire pit. It seemed that being trapped wasn't so bad.
This was one of those times where she was alone. There was a rather large pile of various rocks that came from the area that were gathered by some of the stronger folk. She surveyed the makings of what she thought would be perfect for her. The floor had been dug out and leveled, the timber had been put into place to support the hill that served as the roof. She had an oven she had built from the smaller stones with the help of various passersby. There would be lots of work to come, but she was grateful that she had more shelter now than she'd had since finding herself on this godsforsaken island.
It had been quiet for a time as it'd grown harder to get around during the time of the snow, which was thawing at the moment and she knew that someone would show up soon enough. She had enough food, water, shelter, and even a surplus of supplies. She was clad in furs, as there was yet a chill in the air.

When Renaux had found the woman on the beach he'd given her what provisions he could provide. He'd also offered to take her to a nearby settlement on the back of his Pegasus. With how dangerous the lands they found themselves in he saw it as his duty to ferry those stranded alone to a safe harbour. Not everyone took him up on this and Viessa had been one who'd decided to try and make a go of it alone.
That hadn't sat well with him but she was a grown woman and free to make her own choices. So once he'd been assured that she would not immediately die after he left, he'd departed to continue his patrols. His duty was no less important to him when it was self-imposed than when he'd worked under the king's banner. More important now actually, without his work rescuing people he feared he'd go mad with worry.
Of course, he made time to visit the various communities and people he'd already discovered whenever he flew through an area. Spreading a bit of news and good cheer was another way he could help the people of the isles. Letting others know that survival was still possible and some were even thriving instilled hope and drive in most. Even if the communities would never manage to meet formally in their lifetime.
But those were concerns for another day. Today he made his way down to the newly built shelter he'd espied from the back of Neige. He well remembered the woman he'd helped on the bank of the river a few weeks prior and as he came to a landing he spotted her. She appeared to be no worse for wear, indeed, she seemed to be doing far better than she had on their first meeting.
"Hail and well met, I was in the area and thought I'd check to see if you were still doing well and I can see you have been."
