Lady Naoki, having been told of an exotic celebration from one of Port Argentium’s recently arrived refugees, has decided that the celebration must be held — here and now! It is called a ‘Lūʻau’, or the anglicized ‘Luau’ if you can’t be bothered. It is a celebration — a party, held on the beach, featuring delicious food, music with drums and chanting, and traditional garb consisting of grass skirts and flower necklaces. And indeed, food has been arranged, and page boys are going every which way with boxes of grass skirts and flower necklaces, encouraging all that attend to leave their clothes at home and don the festive garments.
Port Argentium’s celebration doesn’t quite check all the boxes as fully and as traditionally as they may have been back from wherever that refugee was from, but Lady Naoki is at this party and she’s wearing the festive garments. Plus, there’s proper alcohol, so that more than compensates for any perceived shortfalls.
A short way away from the BBQ Spit, a rectangular area has been marked off. A line has been drawn down the center, and a net ( a repurposed bit of spare rigging from The Depravity) has been strung up on poles between it. A page boy stands nearby with a slate, hollering. “BEACH VOLLEYBALL! Sign up for beach volleyball, right here! The winning team to receive favors from Lady Naoki!” What exactly ‘beach volleyball’ is, or the extent of the favor advertised is, as-of-yet, unclear. However, the page boy goes on to say that the match will begin at sundown, and if you wish to be considered, you ought to give him your name. On his slate already are the names ‘Joey-John’, ‘Harry Ballsogna’, and ‘Brisket Barnes’. He seems willing to record any name given to him, but only one per person.
In addition to the Beach Volleyball arena, a curious contraption has been set up on the hot sands: a limbo bar. Looking like a capital-H, it’s two poles stuck in the sands, with a third pole suspended between them. A pageboy stands nearby, explaining and overseeing the competition. The rules of the limbo are as follows: The LIMBO NUMBER begins at 16. Each character participating rolls exactly one d20 in their post to represent their attempt to pass beneath the Limbo Bar without touching it. If their roll is lower than the current LIMBO NUMBER, they pass under the limbo stick without touching it. When they do, the LIMBO NUMBER is lowered by 1. If they roll higher than or equal to the LIMBO NUMBER, the bar is knocked down, they fail the limbo, and the LIMBO NUMBER is not changed. Characters may not limbo twice in a row, nor may they limbo again until after two other characters have attempted the limbo (regardless of outcome). You’re discouraged from participating with multiple characters. The winner is whichever character most recently passed under the limbo stick without touching it when the competition ends on Monday, February 20th, at 12 Noon EST Monday, February 27th, at 12 Noon EST. or if any character passes under the bar when the LIMBO NUMBER is 2. The winner will receive a Fabulous Prize. To insert a die into your post, input the bbcode “[roll range="1-20"” (with a closing bracket) or follow these instructions: You may post again after your initial post to ‘react’ to your character’s attempt to limbo, or you may edit the initial post once the result is posted. However, you may not delete posts to try again. Anyone who cheats at the limbo will be disqualified. 1-20N5QUqG1i

Having just come from her speech near the BBQ Spit, Lady Naoki makes her way over to the Beach Volleyball, with Keph on one arm and Roxanne Fletcher on the other. “ Behold!” Naoki declares, gesturing grandly to the beach volleyball court, such as it is. “The beach volleyball arena!” She allows a moment for “ oohs” and “ ahhs” before continuing, “It’s a far cry from the Oculis Solis, I’ll admit, but this unassuming rectangle and net is where the exotic game of ‘ beach volleyball’ may be played. Observe!” Planting her two volunteers by the side of the arena, Naoki takes up a position on one side of the court. A page boy brings her a ball a bit larger than her head, which she holds up for them to see. Then, holding the ball in one hand in front of her, Naoki levers her other arm around to hit it from underneath. There’s a satisfying ‘ bap’ sound as her arm connects with the ball, and it flies in a beautiful arc up, over the net, to fall squarely in the center of the other side of the court, where it bounces once, then settles in the sand. “That’s the objective of the game,” Naoki goes on to explain. “You want to hit the ball over the net and have it hit the ground within the bounds of the other side — that’s how you score points. The only trouble: as the ball comes soaring over the net, the other team will want to hit it back over to your side, and so, and thus develops a ‘volley’ of sorts, with the ball being hit back and forth over the net between the two teams.” “The two of you,” Naoki continues, moving back to her two captives volunteers, “Will be team captains! When the time comes, around sundown, you two will draft teams from those that have signed up, and face off on the sands not of battle, but of beach volleyball, in a wonderful spectacle! … Any questions?”

Age: 53(?)
Appearance: The reference image is a commissioned piece and is accurate.
Alden is 6 even, with shoulder-length messy black hair, and several days worth of beard stubble. He is handsome, with a powerful jaw, mid-set cheekbones, and a perpetual grin that makes him seem younger than he really is. His bright green eyes, constantly sparkle with barely contained mirth. He has the lithe well-muscled body of a swordsman, and he moves with considerable grace and dexterity.
If one were to do a more thorough examination of Alden's eyes they may notice a further detail. Around the outside edge of his iris, there's an intricate series of minuscule grey runes.
Underneath his shirt, Alden's skin is a mass of scar tissue. Starting from just below his neckline, there is very little space that does not sport some relic of a past injury. A particularly observant person may also note that among these scars, some are a bright scarlet. These scarlet scars form an intricate series of runes hiding amidst the rest of the scars.
-------------------------------------------
Equipment: Alden's general loadout when he goes fighting consists of the following:
A twin set of enchanted shortswords. The simple straight blades are unnatural dark, absorbing rather than reflecting light. Giving the enchanted steel an appearance closer to cold iron. The guard has the Isran sun emblem emblazoned in a medallion shape just above the guard, which is wrapped in simple leather. The enchantments increase their sharpness and durability, as well as being able to ignite the blood of anything that he has pierced with either blade.
Numerous braces and hidden throwing knives all over his body. At one point, these were also enchanted but when the calamity struck he didn't have time to grab his original set. So these are all well-made but ultimately mundane weapons. Still, with his strength and skill, they can be quite deadly.
Unfortunately, at present, he is also missing his armour. His preferred armour is leather dyed in mottled black and greys, with strike plates sewn between layers for added protection. His old set was also enchanted for increased protection from physical and magical attacks.
-------------------------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Alden is, for lack of a better term, a weapon master. He has been trained to use almost any weapon you can think to name. Relentless daily training with each, with extraordinarily demanding expectations on performance and harsh incentives for failure giving a level of skill with most of them that make him formidable.
However, his preferred style involves twin short swords. While he is skilled with all of his weapons thanks to training, he discovered a natural talent with the blade. His level of skill when wielding his short swords is on another level entirely, nearly transcendent in his skill.
On top of that, he is a living magical enchantment. Carved into his body are a variety of runes that grant him numerous innate abilities. He is inhumanly strong, around three to four times stronger than a man in a similar state of physical fitness would be. This also applies to his endurance, speed, reflexes, and other physical traits. He also has regenerative abilities exceeding human normal, able to heal from even broken bones in a matter of days rather than weeks.
In addition, he is immune to most poisons and resistant to the rest. The runes etched into his eyes ensure he can see the same no matter the level of light and reveal magical auras to him. Runes along his back make him impossible to scry on directly and provide him a measure of resistance to magical attack. This, combined with training, also makes him immune to magical mental influence. Finally, runes on his feet dampen any sound he might make taking his already considerable stealth abilities to another level entirely.
Speaking of his training also included all of the skills one would think an Assassin should have. He knows how to mix poisons, move without being seen or making noise, scale walls, lie or disguise himself, pick locks, pick pockets, just for starters. He is also quite skilled at clerical work and he has some diplomacy ability after thirty years leading the Sun Marshals.
Beyond all of this, Alden also possesses an incredible amount of willpower. If Alden decides that he will do something, there is very little that can stop him from doing it. In fact, at present, the only thing that could deter him from a course of action is Captain Naoki. The former Empress is the only person he has any loyalty to and he often values her judgement on matters above his own.
-------------------------------------------
Biography: Alden was born to a small farming family in an out-of-the-way village. His parents named him Toan and until he was five his destiny was most likely to live and die on the same farm he was born. However, that all changed when Pride arrived.
The leader of a criminal group known as The Set, Pride offered his parents a sum of money that would make any poor farmer's heart stop. Enough money to change their lives forever and all he wanted was Alden, one of nearly a dozen children. A child that wasn't even old enough to help with chores around the farm yet. And the man as so nice, he wanted a ward that he could train to be a retainer how bad of a life could that be?
The answer to that question was basically Hell. Pride was a potent alchemist, enchanter, and scholar and he had but one goal in mind. To create a superior warrior. Alden was subjected to hellish daily training along with six other children. Forced to learn to fight with every weapon, against any foe, in any condition. His limbs were broken deliberately and he was forced to continue to fight and train in constant agony. And this was among the mildest of the ways he was trained.
The culmination of the training came when he was twelve. When he and the six other children were locked in a room and told that the only one who got to leave... was the only one to survive. Of course, surviving was hardly a reward.
Once Pride had only the strongest of the children left he proceeded to the next step of his plan. Alden's memories and identity were seared away as Pride carved runes into his flesh and his very soul. Transforming the young man into a living magical artifact and keeping him on a drug that suppressed all of his emotions.
From there Alden became the new Wrath of the set, a weapon meant only to slay those he was told to. That may have been all he would be but Pride made a miscalculation, Alden's runes helped him to build an immunity to the dosage meant to keep his emotions in check, a weakness made worse by Pride having let him keep his anger thinking it would make him a better weapon. Eventually, events conspired and Alden snapped when the only member of The Set to be kind to him, Sloth, was killed for threatening to expose Pride.
Alden, driven into a deeper rage than ever before killed Envy, Lust, Gluttony, and even disembowelled Pride. Greed manage to escape and Alden slaughtered everything in his path trying to catch the man. Eventually succeeding in his goal. Bereft of a target for his rage and the chase having left him in the middle of nowhere Alden finally collapsed the trauma and coming off of the dosage causing him to bury most of his memories.
He wound up in Isra where his talents and skill soon earned him the eye of the then, criminal Madam Naoki. She recruited him as one of her enforcers a role he continued as her power expanded and grew until she finally became Empress. His reward for his loyalty? Appointment to the head of The Sun Marshals her special police force, effectively making him her right-hand man.
During this time he also uncovered his own past and learned that Pride had survived, the man had made preparations for such an eventuality and his death only saw his soul moving to a phylactery as he became a lich.
Pride created a new Set, this time making each member just as he made Alden. Eventually, this culminated in Pride attacking Isra and his eventual, final defeat.
Decades have passed since that time and Alden, whose power kept him at his prime for years continued to serve Isra until the new calamity took him to The Island of Mists, his empress reduced to a captain and he now serving as her first mate.

After acting a podium for Naoki and greeting Chamvert Alden made his way over to the limbo bar. He gave his name to the young man in charge, not that he needed to, the young man blurting it out before Alden even said it. He was nervous, hard to blame him considering Alden's reputation and the armored figure of Chamvert who was presumably looming behind him. Still, Alden was permitted to try and he made his way to the bar. It wasn't particularly low at present and Alden was fairly certain he could make his way under it without trouble. Though he has never limboed before so who knew for sure?

While it seemed like a simple task on paper it wound up being slightly harder than anticipated. Alden approached the bar and then walked towards it leaning back as he did so. Things were going well but one thing he hadn't banked on was the skirt. He had never worn one before and he accidentally stepped on one of the grassy strands of it. This caused him to stumble a bit right as he was almost safely underneath and his chest brushed the bar hard enough to upset it.
"Oh, it appears I failed."
There was a look of mild surprise on his face but he sets the bar back in its spot. Despite the failure he was smiling, it had been an interesting thing to attempt and he was actually glad he failed. He had no desire to win and this meant that another person could have a chance to succeed at their attempt while the bar was still quite high and easy to manage. Over all, the result was better than he had hoped for.

Yips can be heard from three fox spirits rotating around Ori like stars as she approaches watching poor Alden slip on a strand of his straw skirt. The foxes seem to find his failiure amusing, Ori couldnt help but chuckle herself. She wasn't quite as festive, but she did change into her less formal Sakura patterned summer kimono. She figured it might be fun to test her luck. She signaled for her fox spirits to linger on the side as positioned herself to shimmy under the pole. Ori was a tall and slim woman standing at 6ft not including the wooden sandals she wore giving her an extra few inches, she too have never tried this festive party activity. "Wish me luck" she spoke to the shirtless man that went before her. Her purple hair long enough to sweep the ground as she arched her back and waddled towards the bar.

In one smooth motion, the ornately dressed matchmaker is able to gracefully slide under the bar without much trouble. Her fox spirits bouncing in unison at her success. The mischievous little guys even though she has succeeded will knock the bar over anyways. Ori sighs and will help the attendant set it up while giving them her name for when it will be her turn again to limbo on under. She finds this game fun and in her success holds a thumbs up to Alden. "Beginners luck I think is what they call it" her speech has an accent to it that seems non native to this place. Who knows where Ori is truly from. Ori will also sign up for volleyball making clear to the page boy that her fox spirits were not playing as to make the game fair for those who were unfortunate enough to not have helpful fox spirits. The fox spirits in mention are already playing with one of the balls bouncing it between the three of them.

Roxanne had scarcely made it back from the woods, hog in tow, when she'd been caught by one of Naoki's many pageboys and told that Lady Naoki herself had requested her immediate presence. She hadn't liked the sound of that at all, especially not after the pageboy had given her a skirt made of grass and had told her that she had to wear it. After changing into the rather thin and dubiously substantial garment, she'd found that it had been cut for someone far shorter than herself. It also seemed extremely prone to blowing in the wind, and she feared that it'd offer anyone who happened to look more than they'd expected to see. When she'd complained about this fact to the pageboy, he'd told her that it had been made "to Lady Naoki's specifications" and that she was already late. Fearing the worst, she'd followed the lad and considered the sort of excuses she could try and make. Could she claim that she was married? No, Naoki already knew that her cousin hadn't been able to marry her off. Perhaps she could say that she was pregnant? That seemed promising, but would raise more questions she didn't want to answer. Maybe she ought to pretend that she had a heart condition, and that any sort of excitement could be fatal. Maybe that would work.
Upon arriving to the strange arena, Roxanne looked up at the net and went pale. What was the net for, and why was there a crowd? Images flashed through her mind of limbs being bound spread-eagle in the net in front of a cheering, hungry crowd. Was this Naoki's sick game? Did her perversions extend to showing off to the entire settlement? The entire scene reminded her of a scene from The Emerald Spear in which the travelers had met with Chieftain Kuruk's acrobatic harem. She shuddered and turned to run, but found herself caught by the arm and dragged along to meet with Naoki. Thankfully, the cat-woman explained the sort of game that would be played, a simple ball game of the sort she would have played as a child. The relief that flowed through her at the explanation brought more comfort than all the mugs of kelp ale she'd ever consumed, and she found herself relaxing and wondering who she'd pick for her team. Brisket Barnes may have been a ruffian, but he certainly seemed athletic enough. As for the others, she hadn't the slightest clue. She'd have to look over the list once everyone had signed up. For now, however, it seemed that she was free to enjoy the festivities.

"Good luck?"
Alden was not used to being so casually addressed by... anyone. At least, not anyone who didn't know him. While he wasn't displeased by it he was surprised and he lingered to watch the woman dip underneath the bar. Her style of dress brought Katashima and Tawakoshi styles to mind. She moved just a bit awkwardly but showed she was far more used to long flowing garments than Alden was when she smoothly made her way under the bar.
"If it was beginners luck then I suppose your request for it before was a smart move."
While Alden did not actually think he'd provided her with luck, perhaps the act of asking for it had helped. He really couldn't say as his gaze moved over the little spirits that were bouncing about her. They were certainly interesting, he wasn't quite sure what to make of them in all honesty. At least they seemed more benign than the last spirit he'd encountered which was something.

"wishing for luck always seems to make people feel more confident at the task they're about to perform." She walks close to Alden, the man was no longer the spring pup anymore. Upon closer inspection, Alden could see, though her skin holds no cracks, her eyes show a glimmer of her true age, an age many humans do not live to. There's a type of ancientness in honey eyes, the color of fortune and favor. Ori looked both wise and mature, and young and naive all at the same time.
"I have heard of your tales. I mean no disrespect in the way I speak to you. We have all found ourselves anew in this land and figured that we all must play our part in its success making us all equals in a way" Ori figured that would be the most logical explanation to how she spoke to a man of such revere, though to truth is it was much better than Ori referring to him as a child. His age is but a shy sparkle compared to the years she's walked these lands. "My name is Ori Akiyama and these are my little helpers" she refers to her fox spirits, the markings on their faces discerning the three. "Mochi, Matcha, and Mizu." The foxes seemed to be all named after decedent desserts. "Do you think you will be playing in the ball and net game later on?"
Her slender fingers reach out to lovingly pet one of her foxes.

Tybalt smiled as he donned the grass skirt and flower necklace. He also puts on a shell-bead anklet, and twirls around, smiling at his companion. "What do you think?" He asked to her, his fluffy hair flopping down as he tilted his head.
"I-It looks good, but.. It looks kind of short, don't you think?" She muttered, a foreign something in her voice.
"Eh?" Tybalt echoed, confused. The skirt's tips went right at his knees, which in his opinion was a bit too-long. He stared at her for a few moments before recognition dawned on him. "Ahh, I see. You're filthy," he joked before teasingly shortening the grass skirt even further, so it rested comfortably at mid-thigh. He crouched down to pluck a a small, yellow flower and cast it behind his ear. He plucked another one before standing up and stepping closer to his companion, his height putting her head right below his chin. He wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on the crown of her head, as he tucked a matching flower behind her ear. "I'm afraid, Mars, this is where our ways part." He whispered, running one of his hands in circles.
A broken sob poured out of her mouth, as she cried. "Why? We've had such a great time, haven't we? Why now?" He stepped back from her to look at her in the eyes, as unshed tears gleamed in his.
"You asked me to accompany you here. You are so smart, Mars. So charming, and kind, your wisdom is beyond what mine shall ever be. You are so good, and I'm nothing but trouble. This is best for you. We'll always have our memories, and I will cherish them until my final sleep. See this flower?" He pointed at the one in his ear. "I put a matching one in your ear. I've casted a spell, so you'll never be alone. That flower will bring you new love. A better love. A pure and true, the most true kind of love there can possibly be, Mars. I have loved getting to know you, but this is for the best."
"But.. I don't want a new love. I want you."
"Everyone wants me, Mars. It's time to grow up and move on. Goodbye." Tybalt hissed, standing upright and marching away. He wiped his eyes as he walked away, before a spring in his walk developed as he began to smile again, greeting every person he saw with a wide grin and a thoughtful compliment.

The foxes seemed to be all named after decedent desserts. "Do you think you will be playing in the ball and net game later on?" Her slender fingers reach out to lovingly pet one of her foxes. "Does it?" Alden said as he cocked his head at her. He couldn't see how but he'd never asked anyone for luck that he remembered. Perhaps the next time he was about to attempt some task he would try it out for himself. "I was not particularly bothered by them." Honestly, he was a hard man to offend for a variety of reasons. In this case, because he hadn't not minded the revelation for why she'd asked for luck. He'd heard others do so before but hadn't thought much behind the surface level of the exchange. If you believed in it, why not wish for fortune to be on your side? "Though if you mean no disrespect yet suspect you might have paid it, perhaps that means you should take greater care with your words." Certainly Alden tried to be exact when he spoke. His life experiences skewed his views on things sometimes and he'd learned that exactness in his language and being clear in his intents made things marginally easier. Though honestly he'd found people were still often caught off guard by the directness of his thoughts. "It is a pleasure to meet you Ori, Mochi, Matcha, and Mizu." Alden inclined his head to each spirit in turn, a slight grin playing at the corner of his lips as he found some amusement in the alliteration. "I am Alden, though I imagine that if you heard my tales you knew that." His gaze drifts toward volleyball pit and he shrugged his shoulders at the question. "Perhaps, its hard to tell if my presence will be... a hindrance in such things." It was hard to encapsulate his exact feelings on the matter but hindrance covered enough of them.

she chuckles lightly at his responses. "I do not think I will be good at that ball game but sometimes we risk doing things we may not succeed at solely for the reason of fun and excitement. I told that boy taking names that my dear foxes would not play. It would be a disadvantage for the other side even though they too do not know of this game."
she bows her head as he introduces himself. "Yes I do know your name but I did not expect to have found you at a place like this, but I suspect where the good lady is you will be close" When she talked her voice was sweet and gently some have described it like sticky honey, her words seem to linger a little longer in the air.
"It is quite fun that she had you wear a grass skirt" Ori thinks that the grass skirt makes him seem more relatable and thus more approachable, maybe that was one reason she felt she could easily converse with him.

"I suppose you have a point."
Though in all honesty, it was not a fear that he would be bad at the game that held him back. Failure was not typically a concern of his, even when he did he found more amusement in it than anything else, like when he failed at limbo.
"I've been told it is proper for me to attend these gatherings considering my position. As vague as that has been in recent times."
Aboard The Depravity, he'd been First Mate but now that they were settled in The Port he had no official title. There was no need for a High Marshal and even if there was, he had little desire to return to bureaucracy, he'd had his fill of it.
"Had me wear this? I was offered one and accepted."
There hadn't been any harm in it and he'd thought it would be interesting to wear a skirt for a change. The lei around his neck he'd accepted mostly because he thought the flowers were pretty. Despite what some might think he was not overly concerned with looking or being intimidating.

"it seems like you're someone she trusts and I think the flowers and the grass skirt are a good look for you" She will go and take a flower necklace and grass skirt herself and put it over her kimono. Her eyes darted over to the man that was seen walking over. "It looks like a new challenger approaches the dreaded bar"
Alden was tall but Ori stood a few inches taller next to Alden. It was quite the peculiar sight, though her sandals aided in adding the extra height. She will put both hands to her mouth and shout a word of encouragement to Tybalt. "Good luck young man!" Ori wasn't exactly sure if he was young by human society standards but if he was younger than Alden, then in her eyes he would be an adorable young child.
"I hope he can duck successfully under the bar, but a part of me also hopes to be the victor. It is quite a conflicting thought. Are you having fun being here at least Alden?"

"I believe she does."
It would be rather odd if Naoki didn't trust him considering he'd acted as her bodyguard on more than one occasion. Though he wasn't sure how complete that trust was. It was hard to believe that Naoki did not keep some secrets from... Well, everyone. Grandma might know all of them but even that Alden questioned.
"Thank you though."
While he wasn't sure if the grass skirt was a good look for him or if she was just being polite he knew it was meant as a compliment.
"I think if you wish to wind, you'll likely have to go again. The bar is still quite high as for if I am having fun..."
The man trailed off to look around the crowd.
"Some, I often feel out of place at these events. But I'm trying not to let that bother me."
