Up on the second floor, down at the far end of the hallway, tall double doors and a little plaque that says “Naoki” mark her room. The interior is sizeable, dominated by a large, four-poster bed, and features not one, but two fireplaces, one on either side of the room. A wide desk is built into one corner, with a tall-backed chair facing it. A grand wardrobe, taken from her quarters on The Depravity, was an absolute nightmare to get into the room but serves her needs well. A small bookshelf is hidden behind it, and a small door adjacent to that leads to destinations unknown. A tasteful painting of Old Isra (again taken from The Depravity) hangs above the desk.

Just outside Naoki's window, a heavy, beetle-like buzz reached its crescendo. Then-
*Thunk*
The glass barely shook.
Something like cursing in a high-pitched, unknown language would come through muffled from the outside.
Although the fae creature had made several fruitless attempts to breach the bedroom window, she considered herself the very embodiment of dogged determination of her people, and would not surrender to such primitive tall-one sorcery so easily.
*Thunk*
As months went by, it seemed many more people had adapted to the harsh realities of the mist. And the Pchelinaya were overjoyed... in principle. More survivors living sustainably in the mists was always a good thing. However-
*Thunk!*
-it also meant more competition for farmland. Saxi, for her part, was willing to take up arms and fight the tall ones tooth-and-nail for every single flower patch that the tall-ones might recklessly uproot for the sake of their grain. However, the wise Pchelinaya Queen had divined a better solution; a treaty in the form of a symbiotic relationship between the Pchelinaya and the tall-ones. The tall ones (the queen explained to the querulous Saxi) had no direct means of producing the valuable substance which they called honey. For them, flowers were but a means to an end, fruitbearers at best and-
*Thunk!*
-famine food at worse. However, if the tall-ones could be persuaded to plant many flower-bearing crops, the Pchelinaya could ensure that both their larders could be filled with as much honey and mead as either side could ever-
*Thunk!*
-want.
Saxi herself had misgivings about the plan, which she planned to bring up (without the queen's permission, not that she thought that was a big deal). But first she'd have to get past this-
*Thunk!*
-accursed-
*Thunk!*
What even is this sorcery?!
*Thunk, thunk, BZZZZZZzzzzz!*
...

A pair of hands rest themselves on Saxi's shoulder. This would be one of Saxi's first diplomatic missions, and a rather important one. So important, the queen of the Pchelinaya has made the long journey to ensure the success of this mission.
"Saxi, you will injure yourself if you continue this way." This sorcery Queen Qathreen had observed before. She considers herself well-versed in the making of the larger world. "I have lost good people to the likes of this sorcery. The large people call these windows. They provide optical information about what's on the other side. I suspect it is solid to keep out unwanted company and protect the interior from weather."
"This window will not be damaged or cracked by beings our size." The queen buzzes up to inspect the window. She peers inside. "This room does not seem to be the main entrance." The bedroom of the Pchelinaya did not differ so much from those of the large people. It has a bed, somewhere to store your items and even a way to light the room. She doubts that this bedroom is as sticky from the honey though. She has gone to visit these large beings a few times in her lifespan, the biggest trouble is alerting them of her presence. These things called doors have proved to be quite troublesome when your knocks go unanswered. Some doors have the luxuries of a knocker, but those have gotten quite heavy to lift. Knocking on doors is much easier in the hive.
"I suspect this house must have a main door. I say we search for that but the problem comes in whether the being inside will hear our knocks. I think it would be uncouth of us to enter a house without being invited in."
The queen out of all the bee fae is the most to resemble the insect. Her eye round black orbs without the presence of whites, she dresses in a regal style ballgown that covers a bulbous abdomen sporting six fuzzy legs. A crown sits on her head, she may be small but she is still a ruler.

Saxi would have jumped out of her exoskeleton if she wasn't paralyzed by the queen's graceful touch. As soon as she was able to move, she swiveled around and bowed profusely... several times.
She buzzed to the queen in her native Pchelinaya tongue. "F-forgive me your majesty for making a fool of myself. I... I..."
She took a deep little bee breath and remembered her station. She certainly was not the queen, but she was still a noble... darn it. "I wished to bee a diplomat so that I could spare others the burden of having to face these... ungainly mammalian behemoths. I wished to confront them bravely and without fear. You're the last of our kind that I would have wished to endanger... But if you are here, then surely I am the fool. These creatures must not be so dangerous. Still..."
Saxi did a quick sort of lap around Queen Qathreen, her eyes darting about for signs of trouble. *ZZZZzzzZZZZzz* "Good, you were not followed by fae wasps or tall ones with nets."
She peered through the window again. "I am certain this is where their queen resides. But, this... window is indeed much too small to accommodate her... incredible girth. And although I have seen tall ones with wings, the majority of these creatures do not seem capable of flight. So it stands to reason the main entrance must be below us, and at least a meter wide and two and a half meters tall."
The queen would see an officially sealed scroll mounted to Saxi's back which would be in accordance with said queen's wishes, as well as another, smaller scroll made of cruder paper and a blank wax seal on it.

Lady Naoki, who was — until a moment ago, enjoying a precious moment of downtime, arrives at the window half covered in a negligee. A bolt of fire flickers in her hand, ready to repel a would-be assassin or send some little rapscallion packing with a third-degree burn for his impertinence.
But what she sees in the window gives her pause. It's two… bees? One is visibly armed, but the sword is only a few inches long, and it doesn't seem as though they've figured out the window. Naoki blinks.
Standing up a bit straighter, Lady Naoki adjusts the hair from her eyes and stands up a bit straighter, regarding her… visitors?
“Can I help you?” she asks, looking between the pair of them. She doesn’t move as if to open the window, but the fire has left her hand as she crosses her arms over her chest.

"I forgive you Saxi, that is why I have distanced great lengths with you to ensure that things go smoothly and you return safely. Remember your status Saxi. I know you are fierce and tough, but you must remember your lineage. I have not spoken with these creatures personally, I have heard accounts of these people from the bees. Most are quite kind to them, but some show fear and violence when meeting a bee. If any indication of violence should be shown, we will retreat swiftly. We can not hope to win a fight against goliaths. That is an important skill as a leader, knowing when a battle can not be won." The queen moves to float next to Saxi. Saxi has been a favorite of the queens. She is the queen's spawn after all, then again the majority of the hive are her Majesties spawn, but Saxi has proven herself quite capable. "The window is rarely an entrance for these beings to enter or exit from. They are simple to look into or through. Sometimes they will open these windows to allow a gentle breeze to cool the room. The homes in the hives of the Pchelinyy Dom didn't have doors or windows. They simply had holes to enter/exit from. People can look out these holes like windows if they wish to.
Queen Qathreen pinches the sides of her dress and curtsies, listing the bottom of the dress slightly up as she does. "I come from distant lands from my home the Pchelinyy Dom. We are a race of fae called Pchelinaya. We have come to seek an audience with the ruler of this civilization. I am Queen Qathreen accompanying my Emmisary Saxi. We send our highest apologies for disturbing your slumber. Some of my kind have not encountered objects made by the larger species. We can return at a later date that will suit you better."

Saxi placed her fuzzy fist over her thorax and bowed.
"Pleaaaasure." Her common speech still had an insectoid trill, like an accent she couldn't quite get rid of. She so wished she had the queen's beelingual talent. But then again maybe simply needed more practice.
The gigantic woman seemed to have a bit of big people magic prowess. Though, at the very least she wasn't particularly... well-armored.
It occurred to her that the human queen must have guards around, so Saxi kept her peripheral awareness up. Then again, the giant's room seemed strangely sparse, silent. Surely swarms of such massive creatures would make quite a buzz, would they not? The room would also be a lot mustier. But instead it smelled devoid of activity.
This was all very odd. Saxi's antennae wiggled nervously towards the back of her head, though she tried to keep them under control. Big people might consider it rude to sniff their abodes so brazenly, but they also knew nothing of antenna, so maybe the human queen would just think it was breezy outside.

“The Pchelinaya, hm?” Lady Naoki looks between the pair of them again. They’re upfront about being fae, and outwardly polite.
After a moment, Naoki shrugs, tossing a hand in the air. “Sure,” she says. “Why not? I am Lady Naoki, leader of this settlement, and these are my bedchambers. Usually, diplomatic meetings would be conducted downstairs, usually with more clothes on, but sure! An audience, here and now.”
Unlatching the window, Naoki is careful not to bump either of her visitors as she swings it wide and beckons for them to enter.
“Rest here on the table, if you’d like,” she offers, indicating a low table currently cluttered with a few books and errant writing utensils. Naoki clears some of these off to an adjoining chair before turning back to her visitors and pausing a moment before asking, “Would you like… Something to drink, perhaps?”

The queen will buzz herself in and take a delicate seat on the table. She has folded her legs underneath herself and allowed the dress to fan out around her.
"I do not require any refreshments, thank you for your generosity. I once again humbly apologize for our intrusion." She bows her head to Ladi Naoki and gestures for Saxi to follow suit. "Our hive is located in south southwest region of these lands. To garner our longevity, I find it is best to acquaint ourselves with others in this land. We are a peaceful species. I should let my diplomat Saxi speak with you more. Depending on the outcome today, she will be how you remain in contact. I rarely venture out of the hive these days." Queen Qathreen finishes her introduction and allows Saxi to begin her work. She will help Saxi if she ever feels stuck, but this will ultimately be her mission to succeed.
Queen Qathreen has great hope and pride for Saxi. All she will do now is watch the product of her teachings.

Saxi felt a great deal more subdued around her queen. She had hoped to take on an assertive tone with the behemoth...
But now that she was within the bedchambers and could see the mammalian up close, a calmness came over her. The enemy... uh, opposing, uh, alternatively invested queen had allowed her into her chambers and was even offering refreshment. This wasn't an arena. It wasn't a battlefield. It was something else, something Saxi would have to grow into, with less immediate danger but greater stakes.
Ok, I can do this. She flew down to meet her queen and Lady Naoki.
She brought forward both scrolls and laid them before her. There was no sense in hiding the second scroll. Saxi realized she needed to take responsibility for her thoughts and ideas. If they were valid, then the queen would understand.
"Oh, yes." She muttered... in Pchelinaya. She paused for a second, realizing that was a bit rude. She cleared her throat.
"Aaaah, yeeesss. Aaaas the queeen has stated, I am Saaaxi, Eeemissary of the Pchelinaya." She focused on steadying her voice. "Thaank you for welcoming me into your hoooome." She saluted again. "I wish to discuss terms by which our peeeoples may coexist peaaacefully and perhaaps form an alliaaance."
Saxi's antennae twitched slightly with annoyance. She was confident that her words were intelligible at least, but the insectoid trill simply wouldn't go away. She would need to keep practicing.
She unsealed the first scroll, approved by the queen. "As you maaay knooow, we are fae who embody the spirit of beeeees. We turn the nectar of flowers into honeeey. We can also make meeaade. Ouur hives are waaarm even in wiiinter. Weee can surviiiive in tiiimes of strife that youur people may find aaaarduous. Buuut weee are alsooo... smaaall. We suuurvive by nuuumbers. There is saaafety in numbers."
Unrolling the scroll revealed diagrams of several flower species located in and around Port Argentum, some of which were the flowering stages of vital crops such as potatoes and various fruits. "Wheeen you cleaar land for faaarms, we aask you make eeevery attempt to preserve these flooowers. When you plaaaant your crops, knooow that these are useful to uuus. Consider uuus and our neeeeeds, and allooow us to buuuild hiiives near your laaand. In retuuurn, we will offeeer you tribuuute of hoooney and meeaade."
She took a breathe, looked towards the queen in confidence, and unsealed the second scroll.
It contained a poorly scribbled, but surprisingly eloquent bill of rights of sorts. Saxi's humanoid handwriting was pathetic, but clearly she had done her homework.
"Foor this arraaaangement to fuuunction, weee must establish that youuur kind... and ouuur kind, are equaaals in rights despite our diffeeerences. Weee are both sapieeents and surviiivors of the greaaat flooood. There shall neeeever bee slaaavery betweeeen our peooples, and ouuur laws must reeeespect each other's bodily sooovereignties. Weee... must beee like one hiiive."
Saxi's throat was suddenly very, very dry. That had taken much more courage than she imagined.
"Uuuuum, uuum, is it toooo laaate to ask for waaater?" She looked up somewhat insecurely to both queens.

Once her guests are inside, Lady Naoki shuts the window but doesn’t lock it. (There are flies and things, you know.) And once her guests are settled, Naoki seats herself in turn, in a chair next to the table.
Lady Naoki listens politely, ears forward, hands folded, as Queen Qathreen introduces her people and explains their mission. This is far from Naoki’s first diplomatic meeting, so she nods and murmurs assent as appropriate, mostly out of habit.
Then the diplomat Saxi begins to speak. Her command of the common tongue isn’t as strong, but admirable, considering, and quite cute, besides. Naoki listens as Saxi details her ideas. She’s had these in mind for a while, it’s clear.
After she’s finished speaking, Naoki nods. “Certainly. All of that sounds quite doable, I’m sure we can come to an agreement on all those points.”
Naoki briefly glances over the second scroll before standing and crossing over to her nightstand. “It’s admirable you would speak of rights,” she says, taking the water pitcher back to the table. For lack of something better, she pulls a wine glass from a cabinet and pours Saxi a wine glass of water.
It’s a bit tall for Saxi, so Naoki places it adjacent to a ledger that should provide the missing inches. Lady Naoki offers with this an apology and states that she’ll have more fitting amenities for their next visit before returning to her seat, and to business.
“Before you knocked on my window, the most I knew of your people were a few reports of largish bees to the south. You could have, rather easily, kept your distance and your peace. But you’ve gone out of your way not just to seek me out in pursuit of friendly relations, but to draft up this document…”
Naoki would, if permitted, take the scroll and look over it now in more detail.
“This document,” she continues, squinting slightly to read the writing, “Bandying around concepts like ‘slavery’ and ‘bodily autonomy.’”
Lady Naoki is quiet for a few moments more as she reads the document.
“-- Which is very much overkill,” she eventually declares. “You could have approached, introduced yourself, and said ‘We desire friendly relations, if you leave the wildflowers alone we’ll occasionally provide you with honey and mead,’ and that would have been sufficient to ensure that my people would never bother yours.”
“What you have here…” Returning the scroll to the table, Naoki considers how which words to use.
“Documents like these,” she begins, “Are best suited for presenting to more complex decision-making bodies than a single individual like myself, or in situations where there has been some hostility in the past, where you need this level of specificity. I didn’t know who you were five minutes ago. In personal negotiations like these, it’s most important, first, to establish tone and rapport. You were right to first suggest a mutually beneficial arrangement,” Naoki continues. “But going right from that to asking me to agree not to enslave you comes across as a bit strange.”
“Not only that,” Naoki adds, gently, “But it leads me to think that you fear being enslaved. Regardless of if that’s true or not, it’s not what you want to convey in a negotiation like this one.”
“Pray forgive my words,” Naoki is quick to add, realizing that she’s lecturing a visiting emissary. “You’ve done very well, I like you, and all of this will work out,” she assures Saxi.
“It’s just that… Years ago, I was once a fledgling diplomat like yourself, and I made the very same misstep. I walked in with a scroll of my own, and lofty ideas of what the partnership between our nations should look like. It worked out in the end, but I felt foolish when the King suggested I stop talking and join them for a meal.” Thinking back to those times, Naoki chuckles, amused in her reminiscence.
“That’s the other important thing,” Lady Naoki adds. “People feel good when they eat and drink. If the intention is friendly relations, it has long been tradition to break bread. You mentioned honey and mead? It might be prudent to bring some of each with you if you ever have need to meet a leader like this again. It could serve triple duty: as a sample of your product, to get them wanting more, as a gift to establish rapport, and as something for them to eat, so they associate the good feeling of eating with you.”
“And I’m not merely suggesting that because I enjoy honey and mead,” Naoki further adds, smirking at her new bee-friends.
“But before we get to the details, allow me to ask this: As I mentioned, you could have left well enough alone, but you’ve clearly gone to some lengths to approach me with this proposal. Why?”
“Why do you believe this is worth doing?” A deeply personal question for Saxi, as it seems this whole arrangement is born of her passion.

Saxi was a bit confused at first, being offered an entire flower-shaped swimming pool of water for refreshment. But once she realized that the drinking implement had been designed for comically large hands, she nodded and hopped on top of the ledger. She was able to peer her head over the glass, bend it downward at and angle slightly, and stick out a bright pink, not-quite prehensile tongue just enough to reach the water and lap it up into her mouth.
Saxi was able to maintain her composure as she waited for and listened to Lady Naoki's reply. However, her antenna gave away twitches of nervousness. She also noticed that the Queen's handwriting was indeed much neater than her own.
The one comment that stood out to her the most was that demonstrating a desire to preempt slavery could be considered a sign of weakness. This was a strange way of thinking for her, but it very quickly made sense. Posturing was often necessary in combat, and useful if done strategically. But in a strange mathematical way, posturing during the inverse of combat, diplomacy, might yield the opposite of intimidation. Eh, it was still difficult for Saxi to wrap her head around it, but she was able to grasp a key takeaway: being conciliatory and gentle were not signs of weakness in diplomacy.
Hnnnnn, it's still weird.
When Lady Naoki posed her deep, personal question, Saxi suddenly truly felt like she was surrounded by not one, but two queens. (It was a bit of a motherly question, and the Queen of the Pchelinaya was essentially their hive's supreme mother.)
"Hmm." ("Hmm" sounded like "Hmm" in both common and Pchelinaya.)
"Amooong, noooble caste, we haaaave, scholaaars, can bee diplomaaats. Buuut this wooorld is... much more dangerous than our old one. Weeee're not weaaaak. Weee don't feeear enslavement. But... I waaaas afraid for the ooothers. I aaaaam from... noooble warrior caaaste. I waaaant to proteect the hive. It is, it is my whole life. So I retraaain, learned arts of diplomaaacy, so I can heeelp. Not question of streeength, question of iiinstinct. Duuuty. I muuust protect hive, throuugh battle or throuuugh... frieeendship."
Saxi paused, having a sudden realization. She thought about how some of her instincts might have to be reversed if she was to fulfill this role.
She drew her amber sword, held it by the tip instead of the handle, and hopped down from her ledger. She bowed down and held it up to Lady Naoki, seemingly offering it.
"Truuust youu to loook at it."
The tiny weapon was made of polished amber. It had an unusually bright shimmer, and the stone was unnaturally clear and clean all the way through. There was a hint of magic in it, if Lady Naoki could sense such a thing. The cross-guard was adorned with a silky material like fur.

Listening, ears forward, Naoki nods, slowly.
“You think diplomacy and peaceful relations with us tall folk the best way to protect your hive.” This, Naoki can relate to. She was digging for a deeper reason, perhaps some event that inspired Saxi to feel the way she does, but perhaps another time.
In the meantime, Naoki is being offered a sword. Taking the miniature blade between thumb and forefinger, she’s careful not to drop it as she holds it up for a better look.
“A beautiful weapon,” Naoki eventually says, turning it around in her hand. There’s something peculiar about it, but she doesn’t have her glasses close at hand.
“Ah.” A thought occurs to her. “Do you know what may be fitting?”
Gingerly, Lady Naoki returns Saxi’s sword before standing, gesturing for her guests to wait a moment. Crossing over to a cabinet, Naoki opens a drawer and begins to rummage. It’s a fairly impressive cabinet, intricately carved and inlaid with gold leaf. Having been brought her from her quarters aboard The Depravity, it should contain…
“Aha!” Having found what she was looking for, Naoki produces a quill. Returning to the table, she places it down before Saxi.
“It’s a quill,” she explains. “Taken from an owl or somesuch by the look of it, but enchanted. Watch.”
Reaching out, Naoki touches her hand to the quill where it sits on the table. The quill reacts, sparkling slightly as it rises into the air, assuming a writing posture. At some unseen signal from her, it moves through the air of its own accord, tracing letters in the air. If one were to follow, it’s Naoki’s signature, complete with a few of her lesser-known ancillary honors. After it’s done, Naoki plucks it from the air and returns it to the table, where it lies inanimate.
“I’m glad it still works,” Naoki says. “It takes a bit of practice, but by thinking about the words, the quill will write them. For you,” she offers.

Queen Qathreen leans in a little closer to inspect the feather. The feather is just as tall as her. She finds this amusing and a little insulting. She does not outwardly display that the feather has offended her. The queen understands that she is small but at times one forgets their own smallness when the majority of her time is spent with those her size. Compared to the other Pchelinaya, Queen Qathreen is quite tall, almost 7 inches tall, but who's really counting the quarter inches? Maybe her bulbous abdomen helps to enhance her height.
"This gift is most kind of you. We will be able to send messages the right size for you to read." Many of the contracts and other messages that the Pchelinaya hive have sent in the past have been an inch or so, this scroll is the largest type of paper they have almost 3/4ths the length of your average beeple. These minuscule sizes cause communication to be a little troublesome. Queen Qathreen will have to work with Saxi on her penmanship when they return.
"I am glad that you've taken a liking to our act of diplomacy here. Whenever you wish we can work on drafting a plan for routine deliveries from our hive to yours, or you may send a representative to collect it. The latter option may be the faster one. I am looking forward to the blossoming of a good friendship between our new civilizations. The hive keeps me busy, I'm afraid I may not be here as often as I would like but through letters, I will always be in touch."

In a way, Saxi was dumbfounded. Had she actually done something right? Her show of vulnerability, letting the opposing Queen hold her favored weapon, had yielded a permanent gift in return. Of course the feather was significantly larger than Saxi as well, but she didn't mind this as much. Just as she had forged armor from the remains of armored beetles and wasps she had bested, she wondered if its enchanter had perhaps engaged the owl in a mighty clash to obtain the treasure. A bit gingerly, Saxi gestured to her queen if she may see it. She touched the feather, imprinting her will onto it. Then she strained, making little vibrating bee noises as she did. Her eyes widened with joy as the quill began writing perfectly neat letters in common, a feat she had thought impossible for her, on the back of one of her notes. Saxi, Ambassador to Isra, on beehalf of Queen Qathreen She then focused again, and a similar length of words appeared underneath in an unknown script. It was the exact same phrase in Pchelinaya. Saxi folded her arms. She turned to the queen and spoke in Pchelinaya. "I think we can write our native language better than it, but that is ok we will teach it." It is quite clear Saxi approves of the gift, but she decides to make it abundantly clear by bowing to Lady Naoki. "Iiiiiit's peerfeect." To add to what the Queen had said about staying in touch, Saxi said, "Aaand I'll deeliver thoose letters. I'm gooood at thhaaat."
