At the far end of The Basilica, past what will eventually become a beautiful atrium, a single wooden door serves as a stand-in for what will eventually become at the very least, a much nicer wooden door, leading to Lady Naoki’s office. A plaque on the door identifies it as hers, and there's usually a guard somewhere around to make sure people don't go sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.
The interior of the office is about on-par for newly constructed Port Argentium interiors, which is to say, a bit rough around the edges, but sound enough construction. The floor is smoothed stone, which would be cold to the touch, if not for the fireplace roaring away against one wall. A large wartable sits in the center of the room, and Naoki’s tall-backed chair is backed directly up to the fireplace, casting flickering shadows all about the room. Some smaller chairs are scattered around the edges of the table and could comfortably seat up to eight. On the wall behind Naoki’s seat, on either side of the fireplace, there are some miscellaneous cabinets, filled with miscellaneous types of paperwork, with some ledgers, some writing supplies, and items of that ilk.

Naoki sits in her office, the fireplace roaring away behind her. (It’s not very cold just yet, but she enjoys the heat and the sound.) Before her on the table are a good many items, but importantly, the Master Ledger containing records of all those who live in Port Argentium, and her just freshly finished map of the settlement as it exists now, complete with rows upon rows of little houses. They’re getting closer to having a place for everyone to live, but the food reserves are dangling just barely shy of having shortages. It’s not an altogether comfortable position to be in, knowing the details.
Naoki sighs, and bites the knuckle of her thumb, looking over her map to check for inconsistencies. The settlement is shaping up nicely, and she’s proud of what they’ve accomplished so far, but the food concern is a nagging one. Perhaps she ought to — what’s that? Naoki’s ears turn toward the door. ... Someone’s approaching. It’s not any of the pages, she can’t quite tell who it is, and she isn’t expecting anyone. She stands, silently, and listens.

Keph wondered what in the Leviathan’s name he was doing there. He had been out mapping for Hel knows how long. It had been, at the very least, a few months. It wasn’t an easy affair, getting a good idea of the land, and accurately presenting it on paper; it was an even harder affair when one had his knack for getting into trouble. Maybe it was best had he had lost track of time, he told himself.
That, of course, still didn’t answer the question. He had been battling nerves for the walk up to that very door, pacing back-and-forth, wondering what to say, where to look, what to do, and as he had done this, nervous amnesia suddenly struck. This hadn’t helped, grating nerves further. So now, there he was, pacing back-and-forth, like a deranged lunatic, trying to remember why he was there in the first place.
His eye lit up, managing to gather another piece of a madman’s memory puzzle. He had asked several locals where-this and where-that, which led him to that overly posh-y tent. His maps had been handed over, but something-or-other had to be stamped! That’s it, you idiot! He shook his head. Of course, he was here to deliver his maps! There was just a teeny, tiny, little problem: why was he so nervous? The pacing resumed.
Step, step, step, step, CLACK!
A stone bounced across the floor, smacked into the wall, and echoed through the hallway. A couple of guttural, frustrated grunts followed the rock’s echoing clack. It sounded as if some wild beast had managed to find its way in!
So why was he so nervous, he asked himself again. He got to… he got to whatever this place was. This miniature piece of Isran architecture. A master’s try at replicating what Old Isra had, with one-thousandth of the resources, and one-hundredth of the unnecessarily extravagant size. At the door, he handed his stuff in, asked for the something-or-other to be signed, or for him to sign it - he couldn’t remember which. A man, at the front, recognized him, told him to go in.
This still hadn’t answered anything! He disheveled his hair, reaching the peak of his annoyance. He decided that there was a simple solution: nerves be damned, he was going to charge in and deal with the fallout, afterwards. It was reckless, it was blunt, it was very Keph-like.
After the sound of innumerous steps, the growling of a beast, and a lengthy, echoing stone-kick, the door was finally opened—or, perhaps, opened wasn’t the best word, as the young man nearly kicked the hunk of wood off its hinges.
He charged inside with heavy steps, an undaunting look. The result of several months worth of cartography, of mosquito bites and misadventures, held high with pride! As he stood there, wearing his practiced, adventure’s pose, sporting a gleaming, heroic (and rather smug) smile, he finally noticed Naoki’s presence.
All that bluster broke in all but an instant. His hair was slapped down from its frazzled chaos, and he chucked the several scrolls onto the war table. His mood had done a 180°, attempting to make up for that shameful display. The back of his foot pushed up against the door, and slooowly closed it behind him, its hinges creaked - their steady whiiiiine receiving a grimace.
Ink sprouted from that oh, so characteristic bottle that had always hung from his belt, magical lettering formed above his head. “He can fix the door."

As she listens, Naoki grows increasingly confused, her eyebrows furrowing deeper with each passing moment. Steps, a tossed stone, grunting. Growling? Just what manner of — But Naoki doesn’t finish the thought, as the answer comes busting through the door.
“Ah,” she says, “Keph.” This is an acceptable answer, and she nods in greeting.
“Good to see you’ve made it back alright,” she begins, gesturing broadly to him. “You’re looking hearty, whole, and still in prime… door kicking form,” Naoki supposes, looking Keph up and down, then glancing to her poor door. Struck down in its prime. She remembers when it was fitted — it was only yesterday. It was never meant to be a permanent door, but now it never will be. A terrible shame.
She looks then to the scrolls strewn across the table. “These are your maps, then, I take it?” Stretching, Naoki reaches across the table to make a neat little stack of them within easy reach before reseating herself.
“Here, have a seat,” she says, gesturing to the seat adjacent to her own. “I’m eager to hear of your travels and see the results of your work. You’ve been away for a good while. … I worried,” Naoki continues, twirling the end of her tail around her fingers.
“There are monsters and such out there,” she says. “... And I worried about what might happen to them if Keph found them,” Naoki smirks.

One tentative step followed another, then another, moved by autopilot until he found himself seated on the cushined, red velvet chair. You could always leave it to Naoki to bring luxury with her, even if it was the middle of a deserted island.
A map was unraveled, presenting an impressively accurate layout of the surroundings. The paper was lightly damaged. A few tears, a few water stains, all battle wounds from lengthy stays in the wilderness. Yet, nothing short of the complete destruction of his work would stop impassionate, fluid lines from getting across the geography, the perils and benefits of local fauna and flora, and extent to which the unknowns amazed as to the possibilities of the continent’s size.
Keph had looked upon his work many times, but every time, it had been with a professional mind, the mind of someone looking to accomplish, not enjoy. His face lit up with pride, now that he had the time to appraise it all. Ego squashed nervousness, and soon, the twenty-something man was gleefully sharing every detail of his long trek. Ink indulging the Empress-turned-Captain-turned-Empress, while Keph pointed out the here-and-there of his misadventures.
The snapping, alligator-like beasts of the rivers; trees that dwarfed the largest of Isra’s towers, and blotted out the Sun; insects that hid amongst poisonous fruit; deadly, sentient fungi. If allowed to, this would go on for what felt like an eternity, until the young adventurer was satisfied. His tales being imparted to someone’s ear, and hopefully not forgotten anytime soon.
“And that is how he almost lost his leg to the Pit Snapper.”
He dropped back into his seat, having stood throughout his storytelling, having been too excited to keep legs still. He calmed down, looking around the room. It was luxurious, but definitely less so than what he had been accustomed to seeing Naoki surrounded by.
It felt weird to him - having a conversation. Usually, he was too engulfed in the immediate to properly appreciate a casual, social exchange.
“She doesn’t look like she’s aged a day.” He had noticed that, for some, decades had passed, for others, only a few weeks since he had last seen them. A few more recollected events that had never happened.

Naoki’s mouth forms a small ‘o’ as the map is revealed, and it takes her a moment to tear her eyes away when she realizes Keph’s begun to spin his tale.
As he carries on, Naoki pays close attention, as these tales of adventure are exactly the sort of thing she can’t get enough of. There are plenty of tall tales in the books, but they’re old and usually mired in this and that. Here, this is something fresh and new. Keph lived these things quite recently, and they’re directly related to the land around them and this marvelous map he’s made. This is wonderful, wonderful information, and Naoki eats it up.
That said… it is a touch inconvenient. Her two ears, which are usually more than sufficient for listening, are of little use here, and her eyes don’t focus independently in the same way. To ‘listen’ to Keph and look at the map, she’s got to glance up and down and up and down as though she were following a bouncing ball. She does, as it’s quite compelling, but next time she’ll ask him to place the words nearer to the map.
When all is said and Keph seems finished, Naoki nods, appreciative. That was exactly what she was looking for. Then he says something more, prompting the corner of her mouth to curl up into a smirk.
“That’s kind of you to say,” she says, “Though you needn’t resort to flattery when you’ve just treated me to such an excellent story and brought me these incredible maps,” Naoki says, running her fingers along the edge as she again looks it over.
“The work you’ve done, this is all of great value to me. As you of all people well know, it’s dangerous out there. Those that I’ve sent out, the logging parties and that, have encountered great difficulty. … People are dying,” she admits, glancing away. “With a fraction of what we had back home — well.” Naoki’s mouth slides from side to side. “... No, I won’t say that,” she supposes. “It would be an undertaking to truly pacify this place, but even with just the magic we had, I could at least keep people safe.” It’s clear, the situation troubles her.
“These maps, this information you’ve brought, this will go a long way toward improving how I plan things,” Naoki continues. “For example, there’s a logging camp…” Consulting the map, she eventually taps a location southeast of the settlement. “Here, I believe. They’ve been having difficulties getting back and forth safely, as you’d expect. But if there’s a pass through here, as you say, that ought to be a much easier trek for them,” she says, tracing the route with her finger.
“Keph,” she says, fixing him with a look as she turns that same finger to point at him, “Keph is owed a great many favors,” Naoki insists. “You’re also due for some rest, a fine meal, and you might also stop by the Infirmary and have Marks take a look at you — but not before I’ve pampered you at least a little. Name something, just to start,” she prompts him, turning in her seat to face him.

Keph’s mind immediately lit up with too many requests to sort through. New clothing? No, his last fashion-swap had been disastrous, the memories of what his younger self found to be wearable still keeping him up on the odd night. Perhaps new weaponry was in order? He decided against that, as well. Why bother with a new sword or bow when he was so used to their specifics? He rarely used either nowadays, when it came to combat - his ink was simply too convenient to maintain.
Sky-blue eyes sparkled with an energy that hadn’t been there moments before. Ah!, he thought, Keph could ask for a temple! Something small would do. But, again, this too was shot down. To let those that lacked a covenant with the Leviathan work on a temple would be a disgrace to him and his ancestors. Materials! An excellent suggestion… for another time. He had to first figure a proper location. Keeping the ancient covenant honored was major business that required every detail be followed to the T. Now, if only he could remember all the hymns…
The explorer looked about the room, searching for ideas, but they fail to emerge. He frowns, his aesthetic life style making even a simple request difficult to come up with. But even Keph himself could not keep Keph down for long.
His expression lightened and his smile reformed.
“Keph would-”
He stopped himself. With a flick of the quill, the ink is plucked from the air, and brought back. The way he was saying it - writing it - it did not feel right. He ponders, but only briefly, before repeating himself.
“Keph would like to have dinner with Naoki. He has no other requests, for the time being.”
The ink’s master read the words he had written, they were reversed for him (of course), but an instinct had been built up for this sort of thing. He couldn’t help but wonder if he wasn’t sounding too demanding, but it’d be shameful to erase his thoughts a second time in a row.

Naoki looks on with a hand on her chin and no small amount of amusement as Keph considers. It’s always a joy to watch him think.
He starts but then stops, and Naoki quirks an eyebrow before seeing the full extent of his thought written out in the air before her.
“Ahh, but of course!” Naoki says, nodding beneficially in response to this most reasonable request, “The only prize befitting an adventurer of Keph’s caliber — the grandest prize of all!” Rising from her seat up to her full height, Naoki gestures grandly to the adventurer of the hour.
“And it’s about time for dinner, too,” she adds. “… By which I mean only that lunchtime has passed, so the next meal would be dinner. Help me roll up these maps and we can be on our way.” Gesturing to them, Naoki takes great care in handling the maps as she starts to roll them up. She has nothing else that needs to be done here, so they can be out of here in short order.

Keph slid a hand across his brow. He swore he felt a bead of sweat starting to form. With a smile on his face, he took great joy in carefully rolling up the maps. It’s universal, the fulfillment one gets from having their work appreciated.
It didn’t take too much time, in a matter of minutes, several months of work found itself neatly lined across the table. With lunch being behind them, he offers the former Empress his arm. He looked up at the ceiling, briefly wondering if it was still apt to call Naoki an Empress - after all, was there much of an Empire to govern over?
Then again, he’d never been much fond of noble titles.

After the maps and all are all rolled up, Naoki moves as if to pick them up, but glances over when Keph offers his arm. “... Oh!” Naoki places the tips of her fingers across her mouth, “What a gentleman.”Taking his arm in hers, Naoki leaves the maps and ledgers there on the table for a pageboy to fetch later. It takes a bit of rough jostling and a rude word on her part to get the door back into its frame, but before long they’re away, off on a short walk to her estate. The days immediately following the bit with the dragon on the beach have been significantly more sedate for Lady Naoki. That is, nothing of particular note has happened.
Now, she’s asked for the centerpiece of the engagement, the one known as Rune, to come to speak with her at their earliest convenience. She dispatched the page not long ago, so if they were to come, they would probably arrive sometime soon. In the meantime, she’s standing before the table in her office, drawing up plans for a new section of houses.

Rune's approach would first be heard as he hummed a tune nonchalantly, at first faint but growing clearer as he grew closer to Naoki's office. It would been a good twenty minutes of waiting before he arrived. Either he had taken his time or was already wrapped up in something else.
He wondered what Naoki could have been calling him here for, perhaps because of the dragon incident a couple days ago? Perhaps he was in trouble, even. Either way, these thoughts didn't seem to cause pause in the young man, it was worth it to fight the dragon. The countless horrifying monsters from other dimensions he had faced in the past had very much dampened the effect of a reprimanding.
The humming tune would stop suddenly, and a moment later, Rune stepped into the office. This was the first time he had actually spoken to Naoki since even before his first expedition up the river. Of course, he greeted her with his usual exuberance.
"Lady Naoki! Our magnanimous ruler! You've called, so I have come!" he said, spreading his arms out in a flourish and slightly bowing in a manner that skirted between sincerity and joking. A moment later, though, he lowered his arms to his side and strode into the room, a slightly more serious air about him despite a smirk still being present on his features. Taking the chair directly opposite Naoki's own, he leaned back, lounging as he laced his fingers behind his head. His pink hair, normally in a longer braid seemed shortened now ever since it was partly burnt off during his fight with Valignat.
"So, what did you need from me today?" he asked, his purple eyes meeting Naoki's for a moment as he asked, before wandering around the room taking particular interest in the map of the settlement and whatever documents might be in plain view on the desk.

Looking up from her work as Rune enters, Lady Naoki looks on with veiled amusement as he does his little flourish-bow routine and seats himself. She allows him to have his moment and nods in greeting when he looks to her. “Rune.”
“Let me begin by congratulating you,” Naoki says, replacing her quill into its holder and folding her hands on the table. “That was a fine show you put on with the dragon — not to mention, you saved the town a great deal of trouble by handling it by yourself in the manner you did. I’m sorry that the fight didn’t come to a more satisfactory conclusion, and that I wasn’t able to offer congratulations earlier, but…” Trailing off, Naoki shrugs. There’s little she could have done about that.
“That’s not all I’ve asked you here for, though. There are a few items. The first of which: I’m curious about your weapon.” If it’s visible on his person, she’ll nod to it.
“It seemed to function remarkably well,” Lady Naoki says. It’s a leading sort of comment, prompting him to offer whatever information he might.

"Oh... thanks. It was nothing really," Rune said non-chalantly, "And if any more dragons turn up you can count on me to deal with them too!"
Rune was happy Naoki wasn't mad that he ignored her orders, it would have been such a drag to come here to be lectured. At the time he figured she wouldn't mind him taking the initiative, he interpreted her order mostly as one to protect those who might not be a match for the dragon.
At the mention of his sword, Rune's brow raised slightly before an amused smirk splayed across his features, "Oh, did you like the demonstration of my sword? It was a pretty standard weapon back at Fort Adamant. All kinds of different monsters attacked the Fort, and often times one type of weapon alone wouldn't be able to do the job against all different kinds of monsters. That's the main strength of my sword, It's versatility," Rune reached to his waist, and would slowly draw the golden blade, showing the column of runes engraved upon the flat of the mirror polished double-edged blade.
"It is enchanted by the smiths from Fort Adamant using these runes, and also the sword is made out of a special metal called corium that can be enchanted easier, it looks a lot like gold though so it is also quite stylish. It did lose some of its power from the mists, but like you said, it still works pretty well."

Listening, Lady Naoki nods, seemingly appreciative. It’s certainly fortunate for all involved it works now as well as it did.
“Oh, Fort Adamant?...” Trailing off, Naoki hums, and then chuckles to herself as if remembering some long-forgotten joke. “I haven’t heard that name in a while. It explains much, though. If any items would still work, it would be those created for use at Fort Adamant. Would that I had thought to have a crate of those blades loaded to The Depravity.”
Lady Naoki hums again, and shrugs to herself. “In any case, I thought it would be fitting to offer you a boon. Isra’s vaunted Dawn Riders began as dragonslayers, and it would be improper, I feel, to allow such a display to go unrewarded.”
“Of course,” she gestures around them, “You can see the state of the settlement, and the scale of the boons I can grant is similar, but then, the dragon was weakened. So a modest boon for a modest task, I figure.” She spreads her hands, prompting. She rather enjoys granting boons but rarely has the opportunity to do so.
