To the north sits a massive land bridge. Heavily forested, with the slopes of the mountains gently laid beside it, the isthmus makes a dashing sits. Beaches line both sides, giving easy access to the central sea through the woods, should someone discover its path.

Appearance: Like most Correas, Alvaro boasts sharp features and long, wavy, flaxen hair. Though he has a strapping figure, it's easily hidden behind layered blouses, doublets, and embroidered capes. Alvar trims and oils his beard often, keeping a well-groomed appearance where he can. Just below a pair of long lashes, he has a couple of blue eyes that fade to black.
________________________________________________________
Equipment: Alvaro is a political man and prefers not to fight if ever he has the chance to avoid it, but he knows his way around a few bladed weapons. This time, however, he has found himself with a singular dagger.
_________________________________________________________
Skills and Abilities: The baron's vampiric curse can allow him to change his form into several distinct shapes: a shaggy black dog, a vulture, and a centipede no smaller than his human form.
Alvaro's senses and natural strength are heightened considerably at night and gutter just as significantly during the day. He has excellent night vision that causes him to be blinded entirely in the presence of the sun. If in direct contact with sunlight, he burns.
The Correa family's shared ability is to create loyal thralls without having to sire them into vampires. Thralls are made with a bite that doesn't kill the victim; instead, using the blood that pours from it, they create a sigil that binds them to the vampire. Thralls share a portion of the vampire's strength and can still walk freely in the sun, though with a newfound disdain for it.

For three days, Alvaro battled the ocean as it tossed and turned in conflict with a ferocious storm. Thankfully, the Desmodus was wise to such tantrums of nature, leaving Alvaro to the rigging while the ship avoided any reefs that would scratch its hull and drag it below the waves. On the third day of rain and seawater keeping his clothes soaked and heavy, of him straining the ropes, and keeping himself from being flung overboard, he spotted a faint flicker of light in the distance. Before, it was impossible to tell what was land and what was anything else. But what if it was nothing?
With a grimace, Alvaro screamed a horse command through the howling wind at the Desmodus, and on a dime, the ship turned. It took him by surprise, and the momentum just about flung him from the deck, but he dropped his knees fast and slammed into the taffrail. The man cried out, instantly aware of the bruises that would await him hours later. He thought he heard a crack... was that him, or the railing breaking? He had no time to find out.
Skidding to his feet, Alvaro pulled on the rope tied around his waist and pulled himself back to the bow, where he kept his eyes on the orange flicker.
An hour later, the boat came to a stop. Confused, the vampire screamed up to the vessel and heard no answer. Alvaro lashed around and leaned over the deck, spotting the waves wash over a massive sandbank.
His eyes rolled.
"Fine! Fine, I get it!" the aristocrat cried, throwing his hands out to his sides. "I'll begone... but don't you dare leave me out to dry like the rest! I'm keeping my eye on you, Desmodus!"
And with that, his shape collapsed inwards, melting with the darkness of the night until it spread itself up and to the sky with a pair of massive wings. The wind and the rain knocked the creature around, and it flapped with a tiredness that barely kept it aloft, but some way, somehow, it followed that orange light until it smashed into the sandy shore next to it.

It was fast becoming apparent to Eliza Winterlight that this island was very much toying with her, and enjoying it at that. Which, she supposed, she couldn't help but respect. Indeed, if some stranger dared barge into her manor uninvited, then started rummaging through every closed door they could find - why, it would simply be a missed opportunity not to have a bit of fun with them first, wouldn't it?
That being said, this was proving to be quite the inconvenience.
She had no idea how deep she was in the woods west the colony when she came upon it - an arch, made from the crossed boughs of two trees, a thin curtain of shimmering mist hanging beneath. Eliza couldn't resist - she may not yet understand this island, but she could certainly recognize a portal when she saw it. She was simply hoping it would have deigned to take her somewhere more... festive, perhaps. Somewhere with wine. Instead, her curiosity was rewarded by yet another stretch of boring coastline. How typical.
Eliza at least counted herself lucky that she had worn her riding clothes into the woods. Spending a night in the wilderness sounded like a perfect way to ruin one of her gowns.
So here she was, utterly lost and alone, the sun long having dipped beneath the horizon. She would have to find her way back in the morning; even if she knew what direction to begin walking, it was far too dark to start the journey back. Before long she had made a fire, rolling a fallen log up to the flames to sit on while she waited with boredom for morning to come. When it began to rain, Eliza jutted her lower lip forward in a pout and released an indignant 'hmph'. Eliza was not afraid - far from it. Despair was unbecoming of a woman of her stature, and she had little patience for it. But she also was not delusional. This was uncharted territory, in all likelihood filled with beasts and brigands that wouldn't think twice about crossing her. Who knows what was out there, just waiting for the right moment to strike?
This thought was almost immediately answered by a large shape careening into the coastline. A puzzled expression formed on her face, but Eliza did not rise to investigate it up close. She didn't even uncross her legs.
"You know, i'm far from an expert on the matter, but in the future might I recommend landing on your feet?" Eliza raised a condescending eyebrow at the bird. "Far less concussions that way, and all that."

After laying there for a few seconds- nay, a minute, the trip was indeed so tiring- the bird rose shakily onto its talons. Briefly, it took a look around, brain rattled by the landing, as the woman had so eloquently stated, before laying its eyes onto the ravishing figure before it. Why was this woman so appealing at the moment? Not just for her looks, though there was no doubting that, but it was in her beating heart, thrumming in its ears, filling its mouth with drool that threatened to spill forth. It was in her warmth, feeding on the flames, inviting it to do the same from her.
The bird stooped forth and laid its wings against the sand, form shifting as it did on the Desmodus. This time the darkness expanded, became more narrow than broad, became the man known as Alvaro Correa. But she didn't know that, did she? To her, he was just a bird that became a very raggedy, pale, near-drowned man, and oh! He was hungry! How did he not know before how much it clawed at his stomach? Was it because there was nothing to eat?
As these thoughts swam through his head, he didn't even know that he was hobbling toward her, his broken body willing him forth with only his curse to guide him. The vampire's lips curled over his teeth, sharp as needles. He did not speak; no, he growled like a wildman, like a feral thing. He was not Alvaro Correa here, before her. He was a beast. He was hungry.

Eliza scoffed. Men.
She watched the bird as it transformed before her, shifting and changing in grotesque shadow until it was a man that stood before her. Typically, her approach to such an advance would be to talk him down, perhaps tempting him with the promise of flesh before gutting him unceremoniously when his guard was down. However, it quickly became apparent that this man was in no state to listen to reason - and beyond that, it seemed that something was deeply wrong with him. When his mouth opened to reveal those rows of teeth, well... Eliza arrived at a few conclusions.
Eliza was no stranger to vampires. While there were some differences between this man and the breed of night creatures that once roamed Lychcroft, there were enough similarities present for her to wager a guess in that direction. He's certainly handsome enough to be a vampire, she thought coyly to herself. Regrettably, she found herself uniquely devoid of any silvered weapons to defend herself with, and the feral figure was getting closer and closer with each hobbled step. He looked weakened, perhaps injured, but she imagined that he was still fully capable of rending her flesh from her body given the opportunity.
Ah, well. She had yet to meet a man who was invulnerable to lightning.
Still sitting placidly on her makeshift bench, Eliza exhaled. "Naughty, naughty. Aren't you at least going to buy me dinner first?"
She willed her magic to climb from her heart to her wrist, red sparks crackling at her fingertips. Her hand shot out, discharging a crimson bolt of arcane energy at the man's torso, preparing to leap back from her perch should the man prove to be more dexterous than he appeared.

There was a scream as Eliza's lightning surged through the beast's body. It didn't come from Alvaro, but rather, somewhere inside of him. It was a high, reverberating screech, inhuman in every way, that rattled their teeth and flesh down to the bone. His body seized, back arched, hands clasping towards the wrist that discharged the spell. His eyes, once pools of inky black, swirled and guttered as water would down a basin, leaving them a pale, crystal blue, the hunger in them all but vanquished.
When the surge left his body, the vampire fell to his knees with a gasp and a grunt. He heaved as though to vomit, but none came. After a few moments of raspy breath that he scarcely needed, he looked up, hair streaked across his face. A hand went up in defense, expression fearful.
"Halt. Halt! I've come to my senses," he rasped. "My apologies? You wouldn't kick a man when he's down, right?" He smirked, trying to ease her caution. "My name is Alvaro. I've... not had the best time here. Just a mishap, yeah? Won't happen again. The beast has retreated."

Eliza was thankful for the vampire's bout of nausea - if he had been looking at her instead of dry-heaving into the dirt, he would have easily observed the toll the spell had taken on her. It was the first time she had used magic offensively since her arrival on the Isles. Thanks to the dampening of the Mists, what was meant as a low-effort warning shot was enough to make her lightheaded. She gripped the edge of the log and composed herself, stowing any sign of weakness and putting on her best façade.
"The beast, is it?" Eliza smiled dubiously, her words laced with derision. "How very convenient for you. I will have to remember that one the next time I'm caught with a hand in somebody's pocket."
She did believe him, though. She just couldn't resist an opportunity when it presented itself to her.
The sorceress made no further motion to raise a hand against him. "Eliza Winterlight, Exemplar of the Winterlight Estate of Lychcroft - though I expect most of those words mean very little to you." The woman remained sitting out of concern that should she stand, her dizziness would become apparent. "You may relax if you so choose. I have no reason to harm you so long as you continue to exhibit an appropriate degree of cognizance."
She took a moment to study Alvaro, now that the immediate danger had passed. The wretch was beaten to hell and back, but Eliza guessed by his lavish (albeit drenched) regalia that the man was born to some wealth - or, he at least had a connection to somebody who was.

Alvaro caught that tone, the one that said she did not quite believe his words or was otherwise unfamiliar with "the beast." He quirked a brow, keeping his hands to his chest as he dumped himself next to the fire. He didn't think explanations were in order. Some part of her appeared to accept his plead for mercy and his promise of civility. Not only that, but she proved to be the more dangerous one here. Who was he to trust her? He looked around at the bleak scenery around them, all rainstorms, and who knows what the hell else was out there. Hm. Not much choice, then.
"I can't say that Winterlight does ring any bells. What of Correa? Do you know the name?" he asked, looking her up and down. Though not the fanciest of dresses, the riding gear was no second-hand gift from her mother. Such things were tailored to her form and expertly so. Not only that, but the softness of her hands, the fairness to her skin, it all pointed to the same assumptions she had of him: that they were nobility.
"You don't seem terribly concerned. I can't imagine this is such due to a lobotomy." The man smirked. "Though I suppose I'd find kinship if you did, what with the concussion."

Eliza chuckled. An excellent recovery.
"I'm afraid I know nothing of the Correas. Your family, I presume?" The woman asked, probing for additional insight. Eliza gestured vaguely at him with her hand, shifting her posture to something a bit more casual. "Despite what I think we both can agree to be a truly dreadful first impression, you certainly have the air of a highborn about you. Did you come here in their company?"
Even in the dreary atmosphere, Eliza quickly found herself falling back on the instincts of a socialite. If there was another noble family populating these islands, she would very much like to make their acquaintance. Whether they would be regarded as an ally or a threat, only time would tell. In her experience, it was usually some combination of the two.
"You mistake concern for fear. There is plenty to be concerned about, given the circumstances - concern is what keeps us alert, and alive. But running around like a headless chicken will do little to improve said circumstances, wouldn't you agree?" She raised an inquisitive eyebrow, admiring the man from her perch above. Even in the firelight, Alvaro's skin looked as pale as the moon. He was still an utter mess, but Disciple help her if he wasn't a pretty one. And my, did he look right at home broken at her feet, she thought to herself with a soft tilt of her head.

"That they are," Alvaro replied, "And that I did. Or, well, so I thought. They abandoned ship while I was-" He waved his hand around floppishly, "-taking a little beauty nap, as one does. It was a long journey. You understand." He paused, thinking of what else he could tell her, or if he should. There was one amusing detail he could share. "I had the chance to look for them, I've just decided not to. One of them will come to find me in time anyway." As she always did when she wanted one of them.
Listening to the explanation of her current demeanor, Alvaro could certainly agree. As she'd frightened the beast back to the very corners of his mind, she had the power to assure herself of some amount of safety.
Feeling her eyes on him, the vampire flicked his eyes upward, watching her back. There was something about her eyes. It wasn't just the golden sheen, but the predatory, catlike gaze she had. More thoughts than he could read swirled behind them, just like hers. A prickle ran up his spine.
To change the subject, he asked, "And what of you? Did you come with your family? Magehands, I presume."

And there it was - that small seed of dissent. Eliza could hear it in the way he talked about them, that flippant dismissal of the Correa's whereabouts. There was tension between Alvaro and his family - perhaps even some resentment. To Eliza, the observation was not unlike that of a shark, catching the first scent of blood in the water.
And to think, this little black sheep was almost literally dropped into her lap! Was it her birthday already?
"Your family really just up and left you there? At the expense of one little nap? How barbaric." Eliza tutted her tongue with exaggerated judgment.
"I did arrive with my family, as a matter of fact. The Estate has established a colony some distance from here. Thanks to this island's refined sense of humor, I have recently been... shall we say, displaced." She exhaled with a huff, the corner of her mouth lilting into a frown. "Between the night and the rain, I haven't yet had the chance to get my bearings. I'm hopeful that come daybreak, i'll be able to pick out the mountain range that borders our settlement and follow it home."
Eliza's thin eyebrow raised with interest. "I can't say I'm familiar with that last term. What constitutes a Magehand?"

"How lucky that both our families survived the great deluge. The world is here for the wealthy and privileged after all," Alvaro half-jested, letting out a brief chuckle through his nose. Despite this, he knew his status came from a very different type of family than Eliza's. Was there a chance she knew that already? It was likely that she thought that the Correas were related before becoming vampires, but if she came to know of their ages, she would know they weren't quite blood like her own family was.
He looked out into the dark, seeing much farther than Eliza could without help. "The night is no challenge for someone like myself. I suppose you've figured that one out already. I will say I'm a bit too tired and otherwise- mind my language- fucked up to make any journey. My sense of smell may come in handy, however. If you wouldn't mind a straggling puppy following you to your doorstep. I don't know how long I'll last out here on my own."
"As for magehands... well, those who make magic their profession. Funny that's not a term where you're from. Our accents are so alike."

Equipment: Elizabeth carries little with her, relying on her magic to solve most problems. She does, however, have many items hidden amongst her outfits, including daggers and poisons.
Skills and Abilities: Elizabeth is a fearsome sorcerer, though not many have witnessed her ability first-hand. Unlike her brother, she does not often flaunt her power, preferring to keep others in the dark about her capabilities. She is a skilled manipulator, negotiator, and a known socialite, having taken on many of the diplomatic responsibilities of the Winterlight Estate.
She is learned in many studies typical of Komali nobility, and is highly intelligent, despite her frivolous nature.

"If my brother were present, i'm sure he would make some comment regarding - oh, what was it he called it - 'convergent evolution'?" Eliza shrugged, rolling her eyes. "In any case, its not an inaccurate description of our ranks. Though, officially speaking, our profession lies within influence and stewardship. The arcane is secondary, at least as far as the masses are concerned."
In regards to his offer, Alvaro had beaten her to the punch. Eliza was only a few snide remarks away from suggesting that Alvaro accompany her herself. The present outcome was preferred anyway - by inviting himself along, she could keep him in her debt for a while longer.
"Mm... let us suppose, for the moment, that I did allow you the privilege of my company. I daresay, it has been too long since my last opportunity to entertain guests." Eliza smiled, her mind flitting back to the lavish parties she used to throw at the old Estate. "However, we should perhaps first broach the proverbial elephant in the room."
Eliza finally felt well enough to stand without making a fool of herself, striding over to a nearby pile of kindling. She knelt down beside Alvaro, gradually feeding a bundle of sticks into the fire without meeting his eye. "I harbor no inherent ill will towards creatures of darkness. Whatever manner of beast you call yourself, it makes little difference. That being said - I would appreciate some reassurance that we won't have to suffer a repeat of your... incident."

Roleplay posts: 31
Age: 67

Arcane was secondary? How interesting. Alvaro supposed, what with her intricate wear, that she had to be a noble first and foremost. Contrary to what peasants thought- and how little they did think!- being wealthy was no easy task. People easily spent outstanding amounts of gold in one place, and investments had to be made wisely to keep their wealth. Furthermore, class politics gone awry could quickly get one killed or worse... groveling at the feet of another noble. One had to learn the talk, the walk, when to gossip, who to dance with, who to take to tea, and when. Yes, to outsiders, it seemed frivolous, but it wasn't easy to keep it up day by day.
With this in mind, Alvaro thought deeply when Eliza entertained the possibility of taking him along with her. She brought up the obvious, and indeed, he couldn't say for sure if the beast would rear its head again. Alvaro was hungry. It might have been months since he last feasted. Still, he had to say something to reassure her.
"Just a snack is all I need," he lied with a smile. "Some animal lurking in the woods. Allow me a moment's rest before a hunt, then all shall be well. The Beast accepts all forms of carnage, so something as simple as venison should satisfy it twofold."

This 'Beast' business again. Was he speaking in metaphor? Was 'Beast' just a theatrical way to indicate this dark hunger of his, this bloodlust? Or were there darker, more tangible machinations in play that Eliza had scarcely skimmed the surface of?
Eliza stood, placing a hands on her hip and surveying the surrounding wilderness. She turned her head to Alvaro, studying that wry smile of his. There were as many types of smiles as there were stars in the sky, all with their own vastly different uses. It was clear to the sorceress that Alvaro hadn't gotten this far in life without his fair share of secrets, and it was easy to arrive at the conclusion that the man wasn't telling her everything - not just in regards to his hunger, but his entire identity to boot.
It made for good company. Eliza found that people were often too simple to keep her attention for very long, but Alvaro was a man who would not be so easily unraveled.
"Well, do inform me if you develop a taste for more conventional fare. I have rations and a waterskin that you are welcome to, at least for the time being." Best to let him keep his secrets, for now. In time, she would come to learn all she wished to know. "And rest away. Disciple knows I'm not going anywhere in a hurry." She smirked, narrowing her amber eyes at the vampire. "At least not without your nose, little 'puppy.'
