The Winterlight Estate
History
The Winterlight family is one of the oldest noble houses of Lychcroft, established by Vizier Grathan Winterlight centuries before the Dark Wars. Before the cataclysm swallowed Komali whole, the Winterlights could easily claim to be one of the land's most influential voices, practically ruling Lychcroft's capital from the shadows.
Beliefs
"Zabra vin Zabouros"
At their heart, the Winterlights are a power-obsessed cult hiding behind the facade of nobility and stewardship. The core tenant of the Estate is that power belongs in the hands of the powerful - those who can wield it to its fullest potential. They believe that they are the only force worthy of commanding the future of Komali, and claim that if powerful magic is left to the will of the masses, it will lead the world unto a new dark age. Their members are practitioners of corrupting elder magic, and have a long history of trading mortal lives as a means of amassing their collective might.
They tempt outsiders to their ranks with the promise of power, promises that they are all too capable of delivering upon if they are willing and able to pay the price. They excel at alienating newcomers from the outside world, manipulating them into believing that the Estate is the only faction capable of delivering Komali from ruin. The reality is quite the opposite - The Winterlight's meddling in the latent extraplanar magic of Lychcroft was directly responsible for much of the darkness and corruption that plagues Komali to this day.
Historically, the Estate has sought out and abducted children with significant magical potential to raise as their own, cut off from the rest of the world at an early age. Many of these children grow up to become the most loyal and fearsome members of the Estate.
Organization
Currently, the Estate is commanded by the joint leadership of Eliza and Julius Winterlight.
The Estate is comprised of two parts; those who carry the blood of ancestral Winterlights in their veins, and those who have otherwise proven themselves to be worthy allies of the cabal. Anyone is welcome into their family, so long as they are able to align themselves to the same set of ideals, as well as possess some aptitude for matters of the arcane. The most gifted, respected, and ambitious members of the Estate can make their way into the organization's ruling caste.
The Estate is not entirely made up of sorcerers - also counted amongst its ranks are a skilled network of spies, assassins, and diplomats that help keep the Estate informed and on top.
Plots
After making landfall, the Winterlight Estate will be interested in learning more about the laws of magic that govern the Mist, and the possibility of bending its power to their will.
Contained on their ship is a magical artifact dating back to Komali's pre-history. It is capable of furthering their goals, but was damaged in the cataclysm, and many of the pieces required for it to function are missing - scattered across the Mistborn Isles. The estate will do whatever it takes to retrieve these artifact shards, and establish their dominion over the new world.
The Winterlights have discovered the existence of House Correa, and seek to learn more about their numbers.
