She looked in the direction of the ones who may have been the one in charge of those who did the desecration. "What have you done?!" she screamed, her raw grief evident in the way she cried out. "She did not deserve this!" She fell to her knees beside the grave and lovingly touched the stripped corpse who no longer resembled the young woman who'd died. "This is wrong!"
Other people noticed the shift in the atmosphere, and the celebrating ended on their part as more people approached what was once consecrated ground.

Tana had given Mara over to the old crone and was among those who approached. She looked at the carnage, and because she was in the first stages of her second pregnancy, the smell caused her to cringe and vomit. She had no choice but to pull back. There was a devastated look upon the young queen's face and horror mixed in.

The shadow people looked back at what they had left behind. They didn't have time to bury the graves, or fix their own appearance. They had made sure the bones where left in tact, but it seemed that wasn't going to cut it.
Their king looked most disappointed, his glowing red eyes illuminating him as he stared back at the crowd. The dragonkin skeleton stepped in front of the king and his subjects. It was like and invisible force was pulling him towards them.
His glowing heterochromatic eyes, stared at the crowd. He couldn't emote much, but the soul inside writhed within his skull. He wasn't threatening, more just showing he was protecting them.
"Don't hold it against us. If you knew what it's like to be like this you too would scavenge a grave." Some of the shadows tried to explain. They have excuses and apologies, but due to their voices and smiles they sounded ingenuine.

It seemed their negotiations were off to a fantastic start.
Mina was still torn, but she quickly decided that deceit get them nowhere.
"Your majesty, they... they need it to survive. I tried to apprehend them but, they were too strong." She thought about lying, saying she just found them. But some of her injuries were obvious. "They could have killed me, but they accepted my surrender peacefully and now they want to parley. I gave them a chance to flee rather than risk further bloodshed, but the leader insisted. Apparently he is, some sort of king. Or, he was."
With that, Mina nervously got out of the way. Her guardian spirit sensed more people coming. Most of them were not as powerful as the Ghoul King. But their numbers were significant.
The hell is that?
(Most weren't. Near the village was someone or something with a massive aura, comparable to the Ghoul King. Fortunately it wasn't heading towards them. But she had the impression that it was watching and waiting for things to go south before intervening.)

With the Blessing of Ma'ar more or less complete, a few of the Eygor Mjok broke off from the group to investigate what was happening. Rakki himself moved the fastest.
He did not like what he saw when he arrived. Desecrating a burial site was a universal sign of contempt. But they hadn't robbed the bodies, but rather the very flesh itself. Why?! The entities had frightening visages and seemed formidable.
Rakki began chanting rapidly, quietly under his breath. But he stared daggers at the creatures, threatening them with his gaze. However, he did not dare put himself between Uma and the Queen and their new foe. Rather he would defer to the wisdom of the Usqueans. He'd stand by whatever they decided to do.
The few Eygor Mjok who trickled in were equally aghast. But like Rakki, they composed themselves and held themselves back to see what was going on.

The king shook his head." I did this for my people, I needed to please them. Our ancestors used to eat the flesh of those that dared venture near. We inherited those old cravings of long ago." He summoned his soul next to him. A large ball of fire that looked like it was made of glass. It writhed and pulsed like a heart and was missing a piece of itself.
The ghouls in the shadows nodded, looking ashamed at their cravings." Our king is one of the few of our lineage to have lost the taste for flesh. We still hunger for it, living or dead." One of the shadows explained, they came out of their formless mass and revealed themselves to be a humble young man. His mouth was permanently put into a smile but his eyes clearly where not very happy.
The king came out as well. A piece of his soul snapped off like wood chips." Have a piece of my heart, perhaps one of you will understand. See if one of you see what I see." His soul piece usually made people more empathetic and easy to sway, due to it's properties of adding parts of his own feelings to another person. He snapped more and more pieces, eventually leaving him with very little left. He sent two pieces to Uma and Rakki then finally to a few members of the crowd, offering them to take them.

"These grounds are sacred to us! By robbing them of their flesh, you take their ability to give their essence to this forest! You don't understand what you have done!" She was the one who cried out, not the queen. "These aren't mere people, these are descendants of the fae and their blood and flesh deserve to help us begin anew in this world, and you take that from them! Some of these people are newly buried and we haven't yet mourned them properly, and you would strip them of any resemblance they have? We are not delicacies for you to feast upon when we die!"
That was the most she had ever said in one go to anyone besides Rakki at this point. Tana, who was also hurt and angry by the happenstance, was next.

She pulled Uma back, putting a hand on her shoulder, and then lifted her own chin.
You should be able to eat, but you should never eat for pleasure in a time you are supposed to eat to live. We have worked hard and long, building from the ground up and making a new life. You desecrate the graves of those we hold dear, and you would offer us little by way of penance. We do not wish for your heart! Your heart is comprised of evil if you think it is alright to take from those of us who have not yet served the rest of their purpose. We are of the earth, we are the people of the Usque. You know nothing of us besides the fact some of us have died.
Then she lifted her staff and sent out a wave, nothing violent or even remotely attacking, only a vision of the past if the king was so receptive and even heard her inner voice. Many images, things that were passed on through the very DNA she carried in her veins. There would be visions of the people who enchanted the forest in the old world, visions of the living entity it had become, the creatures small and large that roamed the vast forest. He would be able to see the rivers that ran iridescent with mana, hear the whispers of the dryad and the gallop of the elusive unicorn. The feeling of the sunlight sat different in that forest, and there was a delicate system in place where death was regarded as the next stage in making the forest what it was. And then the images would fade.
We are the people of the Usque and these people you see as your next meal were people of the Usque too. The dead play a role as much as the living in the growth of the forest and in the very core of our beliefs, and you dishonor us with your gluttony for rotting flesh.
Then, one by one, women young and old came out of the crowd... about two dozen... And they stepped forward and flanked the young queen. While the voice in the king's head, if he heard it, was strong and confident, the woman who held the moniker of Tana the Tongue-tied, raised her real voice. "L-l-l-leave th-tha-tha-this p-p... place. Now." And then the women began to chant and their right hands would form fists, beating upon their left breasts hard enough to mimic the sound of drums.

The king felt the rush of visions. It was a familiar feeling he felt countless times before. When he would stitch souls to their own dead bodies, he would always feel them writhing and screaming. It wasn't usually a pleasant feeling.
The feeling of being almost one with the world felt so familiar too. Back home he would hear stories of people being so ingrained with the universe they felt connected with the world itself. Back home most of the people also believed in the cycle of life and death. Some considered them the scavengers and apex predators, who made sure every ecosystem was rid of disease and stable. He wondered if this is what that felt like. This magic felt so familiar to their home yet so alien and so wrong.
He already knew where this could head. He already had bad run ins with those conquerors that called them savages. He looked at his soul pieces. They rarely ever swayed people this determined, but it was better to try than to let this situation get worse."Just try them." He said, sending his soul pieces towards a few people in the crowd.
If they hit they would feel the pain he the king felt. The disappointed children, who can't stave off the cravings of flesh. The elves, humans, angels and dragonkin faces, all who attacked them once before, seeing them as monsters for defending themselves and having to eat to survive. The expeditions the king had to make as their kingdom grew and the desire for carrion became more.
They would feel a similar world to their own forest. Massive trees the size of castles, massive beasts beautiful and monstrous. An ecosystem similar to theirs, balanced by the growing flora and constantly destroyed by the fauna. It was chaotic, violent, alien but also beautiful. Animals lived in harmony with their world and even the most vile looking beast had a purpose to keep the place alive.

"L-l-la-leave th-th-this p-pl-p-place!" demanded the young queen. And then more women came out of the crowd in solidarity. It seemed as though the only folks who held back were the men of the village, and perhaps the men that came with Rakki. The chanting grew and they would cast away the shards, even those slightly affected and confused only let it happen for a moment before the women of the Usque beat their chest in one handed drumming.
Something shifted that hadn't happened in quite some time, the magic that had been held at bay for so long finally started to simmer through the air. The language that they sang with was one that sounded ancient, the spirit of the old world thrumming through the hearts of the warrior women whose voices rang into the air.
You will leave this place. You do not sway us. We have survived for many centuries without being seen until we let it happen. We have survived the end of the world many times. This is our land, our heritage now. OUR blood has stained the blades of grass on which you stand. We revive our kingdom from the floods of the old. The daughters of Croeria stand before you and we will fight for what is ours. You will never come here to eat our flesh, be it living or rotting again, or you will face dire consequences. Leave us now while we allow you, take your ill gotten gains and go.
The brown haired queen who stuttered so when she spoke with her physical voice was stronger than she knew, her powers growing the longer she worked at them and trained before her mate had returned. She started to lift the staff and then rap at the ground to the beat set by the others. Tendrils of mist of glittering gold seemed to come out of the forest around them, as if loving hands as it started to clean up the mess and close the graves, but not to attack.
A warmth seemed to flood the area as the ground knit itself. "You... w-will... LEAVE," she yelled and pointed the glowing end of the staff toward the king, "And... never... c-come back!" The forest began to whisper around those who would intrude, one could feel, rather than hear these whispers, perhaps. One might feel it in the shift of the many blades of grass beneath their feet and the way that all the trees surrounding the village began to take on that life that the old forest had once had in such splendor as to take one's breath away, maybe.
The louder the chanting became, the more the forest began to thicken.

Think you better do as they say, buddy. You might not realize it, but you've scored a big victory just by convincing them to leave you with your prize alive. You took a gamble, and you broke even. Sometimes that's good enough.
It seemed the soul within Mina's guardian spirit still had one last word of wisdom for the ghoul king.
Although some part of Mina still felt for the ghastly leader, she had to admit to herself that the Usqueans were... kinda cool. The Eygor Mjok had chosen their friends wisely. Their storied past, the challenges they had overcome, it reminded her of her own lost kingdom of Medan. It was strange that through all the excitement and battle, her predominant emotion at the moment was sadness.
(Actually, the more she observed the Queen, the more she saw some similarities between her and the nobles of her old home land. That was strange.)
Mina waved a shy good-bye towards her former foes, the ghouls, hoping they'd take the hint. She did hope someday they'd find a cure for their affliction, or at least find a group or culture that was willing to tolerate them... Perhaps somewhere in the north?

The ghouls quietly began to seep into the shadows of the forest, as the king waved them to leave. He was not deterred by this interaction, he showed no fear and stared through them. His false smile grew as his tension grew. He looked at the villagers, filled with contempt but also understanding. His soul pieces returned to him as he drew them back
The living skeleton dragonkin decided to talk, it's glowing blue left eye flashed. It moved it's jaw as it trying to say something. It shook in it's body as if trying to alert the one controlling him that the soul was writhing." Something to say? What is it? "The king asked, surprised by their agency in this situation. He rarely ever did this.
He snapped his finger, and the voice box of the skeleton moved. They only said one thing." You are more similar to each other than you think you are." It didn't say anything else, and the king decided to take them back. The bones collapsed into a heavy pile as the light in their eyes disappeared. The king bagged them up in his large bag, and disappeared into the shadows

She... she spoke!?
The Usqueans weren't alone in their chanting. After all, it was the ancestral power of the Eygor Mjok's runelords to harness the power of the landvaettir. Their unified invocation shook the forest and the village with energy. The men and women together, a harmony of two cultures.
Rakki almost couldn't believe what they were witnessing. The might of the Usqueans had been the stuff of legends. That power was gone. And even Rakki wondered if it would ever return. The singing of songs over the uniting of their peoples had been a bit of a hyperbole before, but now... It felt like they had created something special together.
Not to mention Tana overcoming her affliction, even briefly, was likely a seminal moment in their history.
Some of the Eygor Mjok did touch their respective fragments of the ghoul king's soul. And it was true. The Ghoul King was as much a victim of his birth and circumstances as he was a villain. Once upon a time, they had been regular people too. But the consensus among the villagers was far too strong. Letting them survive in exile was about as much charity as they could be expected to give.
It was a good thing the Ghoul King had retreated. Their combined power, had it actually been put to use, might have imbued itself into the Usquean spear women and Eygor Mkoj warriors and allowed to overrun dozens of ghouls. Or perhaps it would have gone into Tana herself, who then could have channeled it into a mighty psionic smite. Or maybe the spirit of the forest itself might have come down upon him and his ilk. Who knows? The possibilities were endless.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 292
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Yah, harmony magic's no joke. I haven't seen that in years.
Jun sat atop a branch in a tall tree, watching the spectacle from just far away enough to not be noticed. She'd caught the tail end of Mina's fight, and had stopped herself from intervening. Though, she would have descended like a lightning bolt (almost literally) had the Queen been in serious danger.
She nodded approvingly. "Now that's how a queen does it."
It would have been calloused to admit that the ghoul king had a point. But Tana had done right to defend the honor of her people. Still, Jun did look on at the retreating monsters with pity. She'd traveled many lands and encountered more than a few creatures who walked two worlds. She understood the trials of those who stood on the sword edge of twilight. It was a thankless existence that required an enormous strength of character to see it through to the end.
Like Mina, she hoped he'd find a home for his people someday.
Just not my house. Jun thought bitterly. She'd known that villager who was about to be eaten, too.

Roleplay posts: 33
Age: 42
Appearance: He is a humanoid figure that is tall and thin. His skin is grey and smells like ash. He wears royal robes with the symbol of his people in the center. Underneath he wears only raggedy worn black pants.
Due to his neutral face shape, he looks like he is always smiling to people. However, his does not mean he is happy. When he grins, it's an indication of anger and not happiness.
Equipment: His royal robes and crown are the only thing he keeps on him. His crown is made of wood, that is especially tough.
His robes meanwhile are heavy and durable. They're big enough that he is able to hide his form inside them, to block damage.
Skills and Abilities: Despite being a thin man he has surprising speed and strength. He may not be very durable physically, but he has enough strength to tear into live prey. He uses this as a surprise, to make opponents lower their guard and allow him to strike.
His limbs are also long and flexible, with him being able to move in unnatural looking ways. He uses this flexibility to try and restrain people.
His strongest weapon however is his snake and shark like jaws. His bite is powerful enough to crush flesh, metal and bone. His teeth are thick with sharp serrations and replenish over the course of a few days. He is also able to unhinge his jaw to eat things bigger than normally possible
He also has two magic abilities he has honed.
Firstly he is able to manipulate his own blood. He is capable of solidifying it and transforming it into bone or solid blood. He rarely ever uses this however, and it is more of a last resort.
His second magical ability is within his Soul. His necromancy comes from he ability to give pieces of his soul to death things. If he gives a piece of his soul to something he can manipulate their flesh and blood to do his bidding. These pieces always return to him when needed. Revived beings are semiautonomous and follow his every order.
He is capable of giving a piece of his soul to living beings. He is unable to hurt of control people with it however, as it is not strong enough to fight something living.
When a living person is given a piece of his soul he is capable of healing injuries and pain from others. He can pour strength into a person and make them stronger as well.

The ghouls retreated, shamefully walking as black shadows beneath the canopy of the forest. They knew this feeling before, but they could never get used to it. It was not their fault tradition and blood lines made them this way. It was not as easy to stop being this way by just simply erasing their own culture and wiping the slate. They were born with the cards they had and they had to adapt.
Some pointed out with resentment that they didn't understand the true cycle of nature. Agents of chaos and order always fighting in a ceaseless struggle had been the natural order for them.. Life sprung forth from the fallen, like two dragons eating each other's tails. Whether eaten by scavengers, left to rot on the ground or brought back to life, energy always returned to the world in some way or another. Good, evil, large, small, everyone played a role in the world to both destroy and bring it to life.
A few however understood the Fae of the forest. They lived a different way of life to them, perhaps that was just how it was. Perhaps they did not understand the concept of Chaos like the boogiemen, and saw it as evil like most other species did. The burning energy of the Sun, the life and emotion of one's soul and the savagery of the animals in the forest where all forms of chaos, but perhaps the Fae didn't see it that way. Some pointed out that they could have explained themselves first, but they had already been shunned by many villages for their requests and looks. They knew that was barely an option.
The king didn't think of it much. He contemplated trying to think of it further but he knew that might hurt. He relented, allowing himself the time to feel the burnout of their actions. He already alienated his species once again, despite just wanting peace and for his people to be safe. He wasn't so sure how he could ever fix this situation. He kept walking without a thought, returning to their shelter inside a darker area of the forest. He would hopefully figure things out there.
