Corvus stood near-motionless at the front of the small rowboat. Both hands gripped his staff, which he held in front of him. He had his eyes closed and he was mumbling some phrase. Finally, a bright light emerged from the tip of his staff and cast outward into the Mist. But the light was extinguished, as it had so many times before. "Damn!" he cursed, sighing before sitting back down. "Will we ever be rid of this mist?" Across from him sat Raphael Williams . The two of them had both accepted a contract to hunt down a river monster some time ago, and met at an old crossroads inn. That establishment was run by a peculiar old man, but he dutifully served his patrons with fresh meat, fruits, bread, and an array of beverages. He was host of mercenaries, travelers, and other road-weary individuals, who sat in eerie silence in the dim light of his tavern. But that very night Corvus and Raphael met it began to storm. The rain came hard, and the thunder boomed through the skies. Soon the fog rolled in, and not even the lightning strikes could reveal what lie beyond. A flash flood prompted the two monster hunters to flee the tavern, and they both jumped out of a window and made for a nearby swollen river. Some small boats were hitched there previously, and the two managed to snag one for themselves. The peculiar old man and his eerie patrons remained in the tavern, apparently unperturbed by the crisis. And now, for what seemed like days, Corvus and Raphael drifted through an endless domain of mist. His magical talent could not dispel the fog, no matter how hard he tried. After burning through their road rations he shared some of his alchemy ingredients with Raphael, which helped to make them feel full. Bonk! Their wooden boat came to a sudden stop. It seemed that they had ran into some shallows. "Oh!" Corvus announced, "we must have reached a shore line." Stepping out of the boat cautiously, the alchemist found that the water was indeed shallow. He led the way slowly, for the fog prevented him from seeing any kind of sudden drop-off. But strangely, and miraculously, it seemed the mist began to dissipate. Indeed, it almost seemed to vanish as quickly as it had arrived before. "...curious," Corvus commented. For the first time in days they could see the sky, the sun, and the clouds. It was the evening, or so Corvus predicted. They could see now they were on the shores of a small lake. Had they been under some illusion? Or was something else at play here? Certainly they were drifting aimlessly in that boat on such a small body of water... In any case, a quick look around revealed something even more strange. The Inn at the Crossroads - the very one they had fled from. But everything was... different. The trees, the very tree line, the river, the lake... it was all strangely altered. The window had also been repaired. "Should we... take a look inside?"

Raphael sat in the small row boat, he had his hood on and he was tightening the bandages around his hands, Corvus tried his best to disperse the mist but no matter what he did, the mist stayed
"I don't like abandoning a job like that," he said "At least we didn't drowned."
The job was hunting a river monster that had been killing people near an inn but the rain came, the water rose and the mist settled. Raphael chuckled as he remembered the way out they took, a window wasn't the most common but it sure was fun
They drifted for days in a row boat after the rain started, or at least it felt like that, and than they felt the boat stopping, "Finally ! I was getting dizzy," he said following Corvus.
When he jumped out of the boat he felt something on the back of his neck, he put the hood down and picked what it looked like a piece of glass
Walking a little further his expression turned into a confused one "what ? How ?" The inn, it was in front of them, "how is that window fixed ?"

Corvus shared Raphael's curiosity. "Something is amiss," he commented, scratching his beard. "Something is... different. Almost like we have been transported to another realm. Let's inquire inside. But be wary." The alchemist led the way and when he came upon the door he gave a few cautious knocks.
"Come on in," a voice said on the other side. Corvus pushed the door open and entered. There, behind the counter, in the dim light, stood the peculiar innkeeper. And the patrons? The very same individuals from before. And yet there was no sign of a flood anywhere. It was as if nothing happened. "What can I get you?"
"...I could use a meal and some ale... assuming the flood did not wash away your supplies." The novice mage looked around for signs of water damage or displaced items - but nothing.
"Take a seat," the man replied as he began to prepare some roasted pork , bread, and ale for the two patrons.
Corvus took a seat in a booth across from Raphael. They sat beneath the window again in case they needed a quick getaway. "This place makes me uneasy," he said. Corvus kept an on eye on the innkeeper until he brought over the food and beverage.
"Enjoy. Now, are you here about the river monster?"
Odd. It was the very same question he had asked them the first time they were here. "Yes... yes, we are. Do we not remember us?"
The innkeeper shrugged, "we get few visitors around these parts. I don't think I've ever seen you two before." The man turned and returned to the bar.
Corvus shook his head, "let's eat and rest, and see if we can't find that creature." As he began to prepare his plate he would ask "want to tell me about your most dangerous encounter?"

Raphael stayed quiet as they entered the inn again, he looked at the people around, and at the innkeeper, he felt weird in that place, something was wrong.
The two sat by a window, and waited for their food and drinks and once the keeper brought them, it seemed that he didn't remember them.
Raphael crossed his arms and frowned "couple years ago some people was disappearing near a village, every time someone walked alone to the big city near, that person would go missing." He took the cup and dranked the ale "I used myself as bait and some goblins showed up, it wouldn't be a problem but one of them was over 9 ft tall and he held a big piece of wood."
Raphael looked outside of the window, "the thing fell as hard as he was tall, one the small ones ran and I tracked it to their cave. They killed the mans and kidnapped the womans, god knows what they did to them, I lit the whole place on fire, there was no survivals "
Raphael looked angry, he clearly hated monsters and took his job seriously, he sighed "I've seen a worst monster but that wasn't my kill, it was my master's, I don't want to talk about it tho, it was a painful experience."

Corvus nodded his head, "aye, monsters always stalk the smaller villages. I theorize it is their remote locations. The proximity to natural habitats like forests, unmolested rivers, and large lakes. There's comfort, safety, and opportunity there a creature cannot find in the depths of an urban environment." Corvus then shrugged, "unless, of course you're a vampire. Or something of that nature."
As Raphael continued his story Corvus noticed he grew increasingly angry. He was curious to know about the fight between the man's master and the 'worst monster', but he would not push his new partner into discomfort. Perhaps he would reveal the story at a later time.
"My mother was an augur," Corvus shifted the conversation to his background, to ease the anger and tension Raphael was feeling. "Twigs, branches, and roots. Rocks and minerals. Heck, even the blood, guts, and brains of her own critters. She used all of these to... I don't know predict the future. Surprisingly, her predictions came true more often than not. And when they didn't come true she blamed it on interference - for one's destiny can be changed when they know the future."
Corvus munched on his meat and drank some more ale before continuing. "I was always intrigued by her occupation, but I sought a more... scientific approach. There is a natural connection between all things. Well, that is my theory at least. This is why I study alchemy. Through alchemy, we can understand the symbitotic relationship between the animate and the inanimate, the animal and the plant, even the mortal with the divine. Alchemy, my friend, is the secret to understanding... everything."
Corvus raised his tankard and took a large gulp, happy with his explanation. "I was searching for ingredients to use once - for my mother, that is - and I was attacked by a forest dwelling beast. I would have met my end that day, but a wandering adventurer rescued me. He had been hired by the locals to rid the forest of the foul creature. That night he explained to me the various toxins that the flora in the area produced, and how they could be mixed to produce different, or even stronger toxins. We foraged for ingredients the following morning. I watched him prepare an oil, which he applied to his sword. Then we tracked down the creature, and he slew it within minutes." Corvus tapped his head. "It's all about what you know. Do your research, plan ahead, prepare, and strike when the opportunity comes. That is where success lies in monster hunting."
He shrugged, for he knew everyone had their own approach to monster hunting. "'Course, that's just my take on the profession."

Raphael started eating, he would listen to the man in front of him, Corvus told his story, the way he hunted
Raphael nodded and drank his whole drink in one swig, he than looked around to see if anyone was paying attention to them, he than opened his coat.
Hanging from his shoulders there were leather strap that held three really expensive looking bottles of alcohol and he discreetly poured into his cup.
The liquid that poured out had and amber colour,it tasted almost the same as whisky and it definitely had corn in it. Raphael drinked half of what he poured than he passed his cup to Corvus "one of the farmers of the village was rich and had plans to make the village bigger, he gave me six of these bottles for burning the goblin's nest, it's strong stuff so go easy," he whispered
"I take a more personal approach to monster hunting, and by that I mean that i use my fists, as my master did, I understand the power of knowledge though, so I think we'll make a good team and once I see what you're capable in this job I'll tell you everything about me, I'm excited to work with you Mr Corvus," he said.
His fingers tapped the table, how did this ended up back in the inn ? They surely were drifting in what I seemed like an ocean after the flood, he looked out the Window, something was definitely wrong and Raphael had his guard up

Corvus hesitated when Raphael passed him the cup. While he did enjoy a strong drink, he was wary about drinking after others. He remembered a theoretical study about miniature organisms that traveled from one person to another and made them sick. 'Germs', they were called. Then again, Raphael didn't look sick, nor did he act like it. Thus, Corvus determined, he was healthy. He took a sip from the cup and nodded his head. "Good stuff." He chased the whiskey with his ale, if only to rid his mouth of the flavor.
Corvus tried to imagine Raphael using his fists to fight a monster. Such an approach would require an extremely close encounter. His method seemed dangerous. But at the same time, it revealed Raphael's skill, courage, and determination. He was capable, Corvus was sure of that.
After finishing his plate and tankard, Corvus looked to Raphael. "I'm full and ready to go, if you are. The contract said the beast was amphibious. Perhaps we should investigate the river first."

Raphael nodded, got up approached the keeper and payed for the food, he gave extra too "I'm taking this cup with me, here's some extra for it" he said, he looked at the door than at the window, than he looked at his coin purse, picked up even more coins and smacked them onto the table
"Let's go !" He said to Corvus while he jumped through the window. Assuming that Corvus followed he started going in the direction of the river, he had a bottle in one hand and the cup in the other, he took a swig of his drink every other second
The river wasn't far from them, once there he looked around, he tried to find tracks or any indication of where the creature might be "I..." He took another swig, this time a longer one "I think if follow the river we'll eventually find something." He poured more of his drink in the cup.
He crouched near the water, almost falling on his butt for a second, "what do you think ?" He took another swig "we can..." He coughed, looked at the bottle "that man wasn't kidding when he said that this is good." He turned his attention back to his partner, "we can go up, downstream or something else if you think it's a better idea, I just want do deal with this thing before I start to get sober."
Raphael didn't look too drunk but he had dranked almost half of the bottle and started to look a little wobbly, he talked a bit slower too but somehow his eyes looked ready for a hunt

Corvus jumped out of the window after Raphael. He followed his friend to the river, and once there started looking for clues. For starters, he tried to locate pawprints along the shore. Unfortunately, there were none. Corvus gauged the area. To the north, from where the river flowed, were trees. To the south was a plain. He deduced the creature might be upriver, where it could stalk prey from within the woods.
"Let's head upstream," he told Raphael, "I figure the river monster might find comfort in the cover of the forest." He began to lead the way upriver, but cautiously. A wary eye kept a check on his surroundings. However, it was not the creature he was looking for - rather, ingredients.
"Ah! Costortis Boletus!" Corvus approached a nearby tree which had mushrooms growing the bark. "The spores find their way to the bark of a tree, then siphon the water and nutrients from the host!" The alchemist started to pluck the fungi from the tree. "And now its spoils belong to me!" He tucked the mushrooms into his satchel. Afterwards he drew a dagger and started to shave some bark from the same tree, dropping it into the satchel as well.
"Tell me, Raphael, have you ever ate random things in the wild?"

Raphael followed Corvus upstream and into the trees, he was still drinking and was getting more drunk "I... Have... not..." He said in a drunken tone
Raphael lost balance for a second and tried to take a swig but the cup was empty, he turned it upside down but nothing fell, he looked at the bottle, took a sip and put it back on the straps
"you want me to eat that don't you." He wobbled a bit as he spoke "if that thing doesn't make me sober I'll eat it." Those words came out very drunkenly out if Raphael's mouth as his eyes scanned their surroundings, looking for traces of the creature

Corvus
New
Alchemist and Mage
Roleplay posts: 6
Appearance: Corvus stands 6'5, and his body is naturally well-toned on account of his diet (owing to his knowledge of alchemy). His skin has been tanned by spending time outdoors, and his dark brown hairs matches his short hair and beard.
--------
Equipment: Mage's Staff: The staff itself isn't magical, but the 'perfect' metallurgical properties allows Corvus to channel his mana. The staff acts as a sort of conduit, and can magnify and focus the effects of his spells. A greater mage or other magic-user could probably put the tool to better use - but this novice mage barely scratches the surface of its potential.
Alchemist's Tools: Corvus carries with him a satchel and kit of various alchemy tools and ingredients.
Liber Alchimia: Corvus' personal log. Includes recipes, journal entries, alchemy information, and much more.
--------
Skills and Abilities: Minor Mage Abilities: Corvus is a self-taught novice mage. His abilities are more supportive or
Master Alchemist: If there is one thing Corvus is great at, it is alchemy. He is able to identify many alchemical ingredients in nature. He is well-read and understands the effects of the ingredients, possible mixtures, uses, dangers, and more. He has even discovered many recipes himself. He has logged many of his experiences and knowledge in his Liber Achimia, but he has never published a book on the subject.

"Well," Corvus casually continued as he cut the bark from the tree, "some things are good for you. Others, bad for you." He turned towards Raphael, the shaved bark in his hands; "sometimes, mixing such natural ingreidents have... advantageous effects." Shrugging again, he chuckled, "or disadvantageous." Corvus shoved the bark into his satchel, alongside the mushrooms. Next, he approached the nearby river, whereby he withdrew a mortar and pestle. Filling the mortar with a bit of fresh water, he then proceeded to drop some of the bark into it, as well as a generous amount of mushrooms. With this simple but strange mixture, he started to mash it together with the pestle to form a very simple mixture.
"Honestly? Disgusting. It's the texture that gets me. But... it's necessary. Costortis Boletus is poisonous - but it can stop you from bleeding out should you suffer a laceration. Naturally, the tree has measures to negate the poison - which is why we add the fibers of bark. The mixture is a safe elixir that can save your life... should you get injured in the fight, of course."
After the explanation, Corvus raised a finger and smiled, "but not for the river monster. If it were to bite one of us... well, let's just say the fibers aren't going to help it. It will certainly feel the effects of the poison." Corvus winked, then approached Raphael with the mortar. "Would you like to try?"

Raphael looked at the mixture and than at Corvus than at the mixture again "Ah, fuck it, you only live once," he said, picking the mortar and downing everything inside, than, he took another swig of whisky, not specifically because it tasted bad.
"Welp, honestly, not as weird as I would imagine but still pretty weird. It's good to have someone smart beside me, honestly, i only know how to punch things," he said, before taking a long sip this time and saving the rest of the bottle for when or if they find the monster.
