"It is still my burden to bear as a queen," she signed, "regardless of where the fault lies, I still have to see to the protection of my people and I feel as if I am failing miserably right now. But we are so few from what we were and we needed the victory." She paused and then changed the subject, "I will see to the still sooner because the alcohol would be good for medicines and we are in short supply of medicinals as it is, and I must get it done before my baby comes." She hadn't told Asa yet, but it didn't matter because everyone seemed to already know including him because her grandmother couldn't keep her mouth shut.
"Is there something else I can do for you... something more immediate? I feel like I owe you more than just some whiskey and a still."

"Aye, ye do. But some whisky and a still are all ye can give me that I cannae make myself."
Mostly because the process of setting up a distillery wasn't one he'd learned. Maybe an oversight on his part but he'd talked to the brewers and brewing a proper batch would require a level of attention he couldn't give daily with the other things on his plate.
"Maybe once yer more settled and not flailing about I'll negotiate for some other things. Cause yer hardly have a forge iffin ye don't have a mine or materials."
They just had a pile of rocks at best and new iron, or better yet, steel tools and weapons were something that he could make himself but only if he had a forge and material. Which he usually traded for both when he required them.

"I am hoping more of our people come out of the mist soon, perhaps it would be exactly what we need," she was starting to feel like the dwarf was growing on her even though he had been so grumpy the times before. But dwarves were like that. "Thank you for coming to their aid." Then she glanced toward a few of the people returning from the village and motioned them over.
Then she nodded to Duen and signed, "Tell the blacksmith to design a still while he has some free time and then find a few volunteers to do some mining. I am sure a few hands less with building the huts will be fine for now." Both of the women looked at each other, then gave Tana a nod and a couple of bows before they went off to grab a meal.
Then she signed to Duen, "It shall be done."

"Good, send fer me at my camp when those two are ready ta head into the woods again. I'll keep em alive."
The dwarf says with the deal made for the moment. Then the dwarf stomps out back into the camp heading towards Basco and once he had his bear he'd head back home to prepare for an extended trip into the woods.

--------------------------------------New Scene-----------------------------------
Where had Asa gone to? She needed him. The queen woke up with him not there one day and wasn't told anything by anyone that she remembered. She lay on her pallet and sighed, wiping away some sweat from her brow. Tana was about to rest when labor struck low and hard. Ugh.
Her breath was sucked in through her teeth and she gave a moan. With nobody around, she stumbled out of the tent and went in search for someone... anyone...

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 305
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

As long as Tana was near the forest, she wasn't alone.
Not a minute had gone by before a set of eyes was on her. The creature scampered through thick brush until its head burst out of a nearby bush and skidded to a stop in front of her. It was a hawkwing fox, followed by a second and a third.
They had grown up quite a bit since Jun had befriended them.
One of the creatures cautiously approached the woman and took a quick whiff of the air. Then she howled. A second hawking flanked Tana and began to make strange purring sounds. The first one came closer to lick Tana's ankle. They seemed to be trying to tell her everything was gonna be alright.
The third observed for a moment, and then ran off back into the forest.
(Avalux had once predicted that repeated exposure to magic would increase the intelligence of animals. And Jun had not stopped training since the day she was defeated by a giant moss-covered cow.)
In under a minute Jun herself made a flying leap over the same bush and almost tripped over the fox who retrieved her, who had run alongside her. He yelped indignantly at the clumsy female biped, who comically skidded to a stop a few meters in front of Tana.
As she recovered, Jun's eyes bugged at seeing Tana's condition. "Y-your highness really needs to adjust the guard shifts a bit." She did her best to conceal her nervousness (though likely that ship had sailed with her entrance). But Tana's birth was enormously significant, not just because it's a baby and babies tend to be important, but also because her baby would be one of the first people to be both conceived and born on the isles!

Roleplay posts: 106
Age: 42
Appearance: Avalux is quarter elven which makes his age slightly hard to guess. His hair had turned a silvery blonde when he was quite young and most of the signs of age on his features are due more to squinting to read in candlelight than his years. He is on the tall and lean side but not to an excessive degree. Perhaps a hair's breadth over six feet and with enough meat on his bones to be healthy. His features are angular and they have a slightly severe cast as his habitual expression is a frown of thoughtful consideration.
-------------------------
Equipment: Utterly insufficient for the task he has been presented with but he has the essential. A fresh notebook, a pen enchanted to replenish its own ink over time, a rune scribes etching tool, his glasses, and various crystals for creating apparatus.
-------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Avalux is a magical engineer (Artificer if you wish to offend) and researcher. He specializes in the creation of devices that use magical power to power mechanical designs. He tackles magic with the scientific method trying to quantify something that most people believe to be unquantifiable. His drive and determination to do so often make him overlook certain things.

While Avalux had met a few monarchs in his time this was most certainly the most interesting situation he'd experienced involving one he'd had. But when Jun had told him what was going on he'd agreed to come and scribe the runes around the queen's bed himself. While they wouldn't help much with the pain, they would speed her recovery post-birth which would hopefully be of some relief to the woman.
Once he'd finished setting it up he'd moved to one side to try and work out a rune sequence that might help with the pain. While this was a bit short notice for him to get it ready he did have a fairly good idea of where to start so depending on how long before things really got under way... He'd manage to keep himself busy and not thinking about the small new life that was about to be born a few feet away from him.

She looked wide eyed. "Asa...?" There was that normal fear in the mother-to-be's eyes as she peered at both her friend, Jun, and the man who she hardly knew, as she had been in her tent mostly since the poisoning. She was still affected by the poisoning on that day, the jagged scar still the pink of newly wrought flesh. Though she was a strong young miss, she was easily winded and the birth was something that frightened her. What if it killed her?
Her head tilted back and she gave a grunt as another contraction ripped through her belly. Her water broke, then, and things only frightened her that much more. She wrapped her arms around her belly and doubled over, giving a raw cry.
Moir, alerted by the cry of a woman in pain, appeared with arms filled with plants that had been identified as herbs. "Now, now, I am here..."
She turned to the others and then said, "I need boilin' water, lass, a blade, and somethin' ta tie the cord off with. Ye," she said to the man, "I'll need ye ta carry her back to her tent.
Assuming people did as directed, Moir would let the man do what it is he was going to do to help before she got to work.
Eventually, people were shooed away since there was not much room in the tent.
Hours came to pass, the sun moving higher and then lower as the day waxed into night. Eventually, a tired Moir came out, looking around. "The child is large and harder to pass. I need for ye," she pointed to the man, "to sit behind her and help her. She is exhausted and her mate is not here, else I'd ask him."
It was deep into the morning, when the sky was starting to light up with pinks and oranges, the sound of the babe's cry could be heard throughout that part of the island. A princess was born that morning, a rather weighty and broad lass with the dark hair of her father. Tana was exhausted but otherwise, sound.

Jun, without hesitation, untied her bolas and gave Moir the twine. She pocketed the two " stones" and then removed her sword from her belt and carefully laid it at Moir's feet. Then she went to fetch the water, imagining Moir thinking to herself it's an umbilical chord not a dragon.
--- Childbirth. The great messy miracle of life. Jun spent a great deal of time pacing. Occasionally she was able to sit down and feign some semblance of calm, despite the copper and bile in her throat. Avalux was probably calmly musing over his rune formulas and thinking of adaptations that could be made for childbirth in the future. She envied that focus now more than ever. Without magic, childbirth is surprisingly dangerous. Tana is just over half my age, and is enduring something which requires incredible bravery and grit. Shit.
Between menstrual cycles, external testicles, and birth canals the size of Isran coins, whichever deity designed human reproductive organs was clearly a cruel jester of some kind, or an idiot.
The sun is high. I should eat something. Her thoughts were interrupted by occasional leg twinges of empathy. I really should eat something. Avalux will not approve. Elder Moir would force me to eat, but she's occupied.
I wonder if men hold their testicles the way we hold our breasts sometimes.Tana, if I could absorb half of your pain I would. Damn, there was probably a spell for that back in the old world.Where is Asadrack? I hope he's alright.Jun did eventually stomach some rations. When asked what she was waiting for (she technically did not need to be there the whole time), she joked that she was just waiting to get her sword back. Her thoughts drifted to Camilla, and how she had abandoned her to play hero in other parts of the world. Maybe her staying there until the night would serve as some sort of penance. --- The hawkwing foxes licked Jun's face awake a split second before the new baby cried.

Avalux kept himself occupied until the labour started. That was the point at which he left the tent to go find somewhere else to be. While he was, generally, not that squeamish something about the thought of a baby had him slightly on edge. Probably because he'd not actually been around any small humans since he'd been one, baring the ones he crossed paths with occasionally while out and about. Still, that was a far cry from interacting with one directly and further still from helping with the birth of one.
Still, he'd done all he could for the moment. He'd only puzzled through about half the numbing spell and he wasn't entirely sure how he would even test it. Trying to deaden someone's nerves seemed like the thing that could very easily go awry. Jun would probably disapprove of human testing even if he found volunteers. Ah well, it was mostly just a thought exercise at present anyway, he was trying to keep himself occupied.
"Er, I am sorry, what was that?"
It had sounded as though Moir had just told him there was a problem with the birth, something about the baby being too large? He supposed, based on what he'd read, he could see how that might cause an issue. But how exactly was he supposed to help with that? She must have been meaning to point at someone else. He was... Well, he wasn't a midwife or even a medic he was ill-equiped to do anything more than what he'd done.

All she really needed was someone to hold her up. Pushing the baby out was exhausting! But soon enough, the baby was there and crying lustily, her little princess. Her mouth curled up tenderly as she gazed at the next generation of Usqueans. She was so tired though. She lay on her back with her bundle of joy resting on her stomach.

At the entrance of the tent, a groggy Jun poked her head between the curtains. She gingerly walked into to get a better look at the baby, moving cautiously along the side of the tent. Seeing the baby seemed to wake her up real quick; she was staring in awe at the little miracle.
"She's beautiful," Jun said, wiping a little tear away.
The hawkwing foxes trailed in afterwards, circling Jun's feet and then Tana's feet, sniffing curiously.
"They wanna know what new human baby smell is like. They're weird." She gave Avalux a questioning look, as if looking for approval despite the obvious concern for sanitation. She was prepared to shoo them away.

Avalux Kesterven
Dedicated

Avalux was standing awkwardly in one corner when Jun entered. The look on his face could be best described as awestruck. A mixture of wonder and fear. Participating in the birth had been one of the most... Well, stressful seems like a better term than traumatizing. Though being present when the babe took her first lungful of air and let out a cry had filled him with undeniable amazement. When Jun addressed him something finally snapped for him though.
"I need some fresh air."
The man had always been pale but now he was even more so than usual. He bustles out of the tent and a few moments later she would hear him retching. The excitement and stress of the night before finally catching up to him. The sudden impact of it hitting him making his stomach revolt.

Tana is a young, shy girl who has a voice but doesn't use her vocal chords to produce it. She was born deep in the usque, a tribe of Humans who had descended from fae of the Usque. She has such a stutter that she chooses not to speak for she was perpetually tongue tied, but instead does her best to communicate in her own version of sign language.
In the wake of the next cataclysm, she and a few of her people drifted through the mist... Not many people made it out alive, or in the same area.
Allegiances: Usqueans

Tana lay resting with the large baby girl. She would grow into an amazon of a woman one day if her length had anything to say about it. Tana named the little one "Mara," without stuttering her name. She was not surprised that the man who was forced to see a bit more than he needed to, she felt bad for him as she heard him retch outside. That could not be helped. Mara was cleaned up soon enough and so was Tana, who was changed into clean clothing after a bit of a sponge while Avalux was out of the tent.
She began to sign tiredly, too tired to write things out on a sand table. Moir translated, "She says to thank ye, sir," she said out of the tent and then to Jun, "And to you, she wants you to be Mara's guardian if something should happen to Tana or her mate. Where has that man gone off to anyway? He shoulda been here with Tana."

"I don't know..."
Jun turned her head towards the entrance of the tent, partially out of concern for Avalux ("euuuh, oh dear"), and part in contemplation of Asadrack.
She turned back to Moir and Tana. "I know that Asadrack was struggling with feelings of insecurity. He's young. He feels unworthy, given his past. But I don't think he wouldn't have been here without a very good reason, which, probably doesn't help either way."
She forced a smile. "Regardless, I will help take care of Mara if something should happen to you. But don't forget you have a whole village looking out for you. And the research me and Avalux are conducting will also help protect the Usqueans both directly and indirectly. On top of that, we are starting to make allies. You're far from alone."
As if on cue, the hawkwing foxes lined up in front of Tana, in order of height no less. Jun chuckled. They weren't as formidable as Mr. Frog, but they were much more agreeable.
Hearing Avalux wretch again, Jun winced sympathetically. She hadn't been feeling well either, given their circumstances, although she had somehow weathered it much better. "I should tell him to work on anti-nausea runes next."
