She pointed over to the lone figure who was training. Then before he could say anything else, Moir started walking off back to the camp.

Asa approached Magda, making sure he wouldn't get o her way as she trained "Excuse me, can I talk to you for a second ?"
If the woman would reply with "yes" Asa would explain what he was planning and what he needed, otherwise he would wait until she was done first.

Magda eyed the man and said, "What about?" She wasn't exactly keen on talking to people. Her mouth moved into a frown and she listened patiently to his story. Well, it was good he was making an honest woman of the queen. At least that was how she thought despite most Usqueans believing in free love.

Appearance: Avalux is quarter elven which makes his age slightly hard to guess. His hair had turned a silvery blonde when he was quite young and most of the signs of age on his features are due more to squinting to read in candlelight than his years. He is on the tall and lean side but not to an excessive degree. Perhaps a hair's breadth over six feet and with enough meat on his bones to be healthy. His features are angular and they have a slightly severe cast as his habitual expression is a frown of thoughtful consideration.

Equipment: Utterly insufficient for the task he has been presented with but he has the essential. A fresh notebook, a pen enchanted to replenish its own ink over time, a rune scribes etching tool, his glasses, and various crystals for creating apparatus.

Skills and Abilities: Avalux is a magical engineer (Artificer if you wish to offend) and researcher. He specializes in the creation of devices that use magical power to power mechanical designs. He tackles magic with the scientific method trying to quantify something that most people believe to be unquantifiable. His drive and determination to do so often make him overlook certain things.

When Avalux had initially landed his boat he'd had some hope that things would improve. Of course, scientifically he'd known that was unlikely. Being out at sea had certainly lowered the density of the magical environment and that had increased once he'd made landfall, yes. However, the array's output still wasn't anywhere near where it should be. Though it was, at least, now producing an Aum worth of magic per tick now which was something he supposed. He'd never been so underwhelmed by a near doubling in production but when it was still a fifth of what the array was supposed to be capable of there wasn't much joy to be had.
Without magic, he would be at a distinct disadvantage when it came to the matter of his survival. The food he had aboard his vessel would last him another week if he rationed extremely carefully but he was dangerously low on freshwater. That, at least, was an issue that landfall would help solve more directly. All waters flowed to the sea eventually so if he searched the shoreline he was sure he’d eventually find a source of freshwater feeding into the sea.
What he did not account for was that his shoes, while quite comfortable and perfect for his normal work in his lab were… not suited for scrambling over slippery stones and unstable rocky sand. There was also a bit of mist due to the early hour which exacerbated issues and it wasn’t long before he slipped on a stone and was sent down to his hands and knees just barely catching himself. However, his glasses had been flung from his face in the process.
“Oh, blast it all.”
The man grumbled as squinted at the ground. Where had they gone off to? He was incredibly short-sighted and without them, anything more than a foot from his eyes was an indistinct blur. Was he going to have to wait until the mist cleared and the sun was high in the sky to find them? He certainly couldn’t risk standing up and accidentally stepping on them right now.
“This is… infuriating.”
Avalux had no better word for recent events than that as he reached up and rubbed the bridge of his nose. Things had only gone from bad to worse, any momentary triumph quickly eclipsed by some new set back so he supposed it was only fitting that this happen when he was trying to do something as simple as gather water? The only question was, how could things get any worse?
While he wasn’t foolish or crazed enough to voice that sentiment aloud it appeared that the universe did not care overmuch. Because something was watching him from the forest and the creature decided it had found some likely prey. The big cat-like thing stalked out from the bush line toward what appeared to be a crippled animal to it, something it could quickly kill and consume. Considering that Avalux was half-blind it wasn't exactly wrong and it was silent enough that he couldn't hear the thing over his own annoyance and grumbling.

Jun of the Celadine

Roleplay posts: 305
Age: 33
Appearance: Jun stands at about 5’ 4”, with a willowy, slightly rectangular build. Her tawny olive skin has lost its flush from constantly wearing cloth armor, and she is dotted with small scars, including wrinkled patches of old burns on her left arm. She has deep brown, slightly hooded eyes and not quite straight dark auburn hair. Her face is still youthful and strong, though her gaze suggests she’s seen way too much for her age.
Equipment: An emerald, muddy long coat-style gambeson. A chrome blue longsword with a rusty hilt. Rusted shackles on her wrists ending in broken chains, giving a false impression that she had been a prisoner; the bracelets are easily removed.
Skills and Abilities: What remains of Jun’s power is a mix of animal friendship and elemental control. She can communicate with and control weaker animals, like insects, and request the help of larger, sentient animals (though they are not compelled to obey her). She can perform subtle manipulations of fire, water, earth, wind, and other “elements” like light and shadow. Her most unique ability is to imbue elemental magic into other life forms and channel her spells through them.
She is a decent cook and survivalist and has a solid academic understanding of agriculture and ecology. She is also a decent sword and hand-to-hand fighter.
Biography: Jun of the Celadine was a stereotypical hero of legend. She was one of Isra's mightiest spellcasters, had gone on dozens of adventures, possessed several powerful artifacts, and helped bring peace to the world on many occasions.
A notorious overachiever and workaholic, Jun had driven herself to near madness pursuing powerful magic. In standard fashion, it was the power of friendship that kept her sane.
Now Jun must cope with the fact that much of the world she helped protect has been lost, and that most of the magic power she had accrued over the years has stopped working.
Her family (whose whereabouts are unknown) was a clan of farmers and gardeners. Her tribe lived in peace and harmony in a mostly forested region. Every two hundred years or so, their people produced a powerful mage and master of all elements. Jun was not this chosen one, but rather her grandmother was. Still, Jun's (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with keeping up with her ancestor made her a pretty close second.
Jun has no regrets about her journey, though she sometimes wishes she had spent more learning other skills, like cooking and dancing. She also feels she made a poor lover, though it's likely her old partners passed away in the floodwaters anyways...

Nearby, a woman shrieked.
It wasn't a shriek of panic or fear. The tone was one of sudden, profound agony and annoyance.
There was a good chance the sound would alert Mr. Kesterven to his surroundings. Though if that didn't work, there was always the briefest blur of kicked up sand speeding towards him from his side.
And if that didn't work, the gust of hair behind him would surely do it.
And if somehow all that failed to get his attention, then he'd have quite a jump scare to look forward to as, one eye blink before the predatory cat landed its jaws onto Avalux's neck, a green object would strike it with the force of a small cannonball.
A feline hiss was followed by the skid of two bodies along the sand. Then came the flailing of limbs. Something small and feisty had engaged the much larger creature. If Avalux's had one of his instruments on him, his little savior's Aum output would certainly stand out!
After several thunderous flippery strikes, the cat would decide that enough was enough and retreat back into the forest.
Then, all was quiet save for a faint sizzling. The triumphant little creature's aura warped the air around it and tinted it with faint rainbow hues. If Avalux squinted very, very hard, he might be able to make out the outline of a frog.
Or maybe it was a toad. It was up for debate.

In point of fact, the shriek got Avalux’s attention nearly immediately. He went from hands and knees to just knees peering about. Of course, he couldn’t bloody well see anything without his glasses so he opened his mouth to say something when there was the sight of sand being kicked up in his peripheral. This had him looking behind him and finally spotting the shape of something that looked quite dangerous.
“Damnation!”
While he was scrabbling away from the monster his voice sounded more annoyed than frightened. In all honesty, he should have been terrified since none of his devices had enough charge to work so he was hardly equipped to handle the thing but… He was just angry that yet another complication had occurred on top of what had already occurred. This was just getting ridiculous, he was a researcher, not some blasted adventurer!
Just as his fingers curled around a rock as he tried to think of something else he could use to defend himself something shot out of the fog and slammed into the creature. Whatever it was, it was small fast and capable of flight apparently. When the monster finally decided it had enough his rescuer stayed there floating and glowing.
“Visible aura, so it has enough energy that it has to release aumic pressure. Fascinating…”
There is a pause and then he adds, louder and to the floating thing.
“Are you sapient? Should I be thanking you for my rescue? Or are you some kind of summon or familiar? Either way, are you capable of helping me find my glasses.”
Because he absolutely wanted a better look at whatever this thing was. It had more mana in it than anything he’d seen since entering the blasted mists.

The amphibian turned to face Avalux, but only gave a ribbit in reply. Its throat pulsed with mild excitement, as frogs tend to do.
A second source of magical pressure hobbled out of the tree line several meters away. A woman, wearing a dark green padded coat and boots, was clutching her nose. A thin stream of blood poured down her chin and curled around her wrist.
"You could have used a tree as a launch pad." She scolded. "You could have used my knee as a launch pad. But no, you insisted on using my face."
"Ribbit," the frog replied.
The woman shambled her way to Avalux, paused, bent down, and carefully picked up a pair of glasses. Then she held them out towards the researcher.
"The first time I imbued him with magic he tried to beat the crap out of me," she said flatly. "I think his species is extremely territorial. Fortunately I was able to establish dominance that time." Her neck craned towards the beast. "Which is ironic since I'm where he gets his powers!"
"Ribbit," the frog replied.
"So ungrateful." The woman released her face and crinkled her nose. Satisfied that she had stopped bleeding and that nothing was broken, she extended her (not bloody) hand again in friendship.
The woman was relatively young. Her hair was shoulder length and wavy, and she had dark olive skin and brown eyes. Despite her injury, her posture towards Avalux was both gentle and confident, utterly devoid of fear. She was quite short and thin, but her hands were calloused and firm. Her coat was patched up and with small tears. Her eyes had seen way too much, and yet seemed constantly ready for more.
"My name is Jun. Are you ok?"

Bereft of his glasses Avalux focused on listening to what was being said as it was currently the best way for him to learn. However, the vaguely humanoid shaped blob offered up his glasses which he accepted with a. "Thank you." As he placed them back on his own his vision resolving to reveal the humanoid shape was a woman in a cloak and the indistinct blood of glowing energy was a frog.
"Fascinating."
Avalix blinked as he took in the creature a stream of information floating across his vision.
"Hrmm, so, speculation if you were the one to invest this frog and it has enough energy that the over fill can be measured at about 7 Aums per tick then you must be quite powerful. Which means that you could have dealt with the creature without the intermediary of the familiar… unless you are having similar issues with channeling magic that I am and the frog has some quality that makes it possible to charge it more easily?"
With that he turned his attention back to Jun. In some ways he was in sharp contrast to her. He was nearly a foot taller and pale where she was tan, blond where she was brunette. However, he shared the same eyes, eyes that spoke of age beyond his years. Eyes that took in her extended hand and he blinked at that.
"Oh, my apologies. Forgetting my manners."
With that he accepted her hand and gave it a firm shake.
"Avalux Kesterven, former researcher for the University of Glade Citadel though I suppose I am rather out of a job now. Thank you for your assistance Miss Jun."

Jun shook his hand firmly. "If it's any consolation, I know the feeling." She and many others were "out of a job" now.
She strode over to the frog and bent down to place her hand on it. "Thank you for helping me save this man. I really appreciate-"
With a lightning quick lunge, the frog clamped its entire mouth over Jun's fingers.
Jun took a deep nasal breath as she restrained the urge to toss the frog into the ocean. Thin threads of rainbow-like energy whipped up along her arm and inserted themselves into various pressure points on her body. The frog seemed to be paying back its loan.
"Your hypothesis is correct. Back in my old world, I was a powerful sorceress. My specialty was elemental magic. Fire, water, wind, darkness, light, you name it. But in this world, I need the assistance of other lifeforms to produce anything above... based on your system I'd say 2 or 3 aums? And what's even stranger is not every survivor has this same limitation. Some people can manifest their magic normally, but at a greatly reduced output. Others seem to incur a different cost, such as fatigue, reagents that weren't necessary before, even blood."
When the frog's aura dissipated, it released Jun's fingers and immediately hopped its way back towards the tree line.
"By the way, he didn't need to bite me to return the magic. He's just a little asshole." She shook her fingers comically and smirked, somewhat embarrassed. "But he's also one of my strongest... I don't really have a fancy word for the auxiliary lifeforms I use. I just call him Mr. Frog."
Looking at Avalux gave Jun a warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. Something about the man's speech and demeanor reminded her of the academics she had met in the city of Gauldin, an ally of Isra and her home region of the Land-Tiller's Expanse. It was nice to meet a fragment of something she hadn't seen in ages, though the pleasantry was tempered by the knowledge that the poor man, like herself and so many others, had probably just lost everything.

"Well, despite him being an asshole he still saved my life so I suppose I should thank him by name."
Avalux said as he looked at the frog and inclined his head.
"Thank you one last time Mr. Frog."
While he wasn't certain if the creature would understand him at present, he knew it likely would eventually. Repeated exposure to magic had a tendency to cause strange reactions in living creatures. For familiars and animal companions it often resulted in an awakening to true sapience. Then he decided, after observing the flow of energy between the two, that he should address something she'd said previously.
"Also, two or three Aums would not be quite right."
The researcher began a slight sigh in his voice. It was not a sign of disappointment or judgement in her lack of knowledge but it was one she'd heard before. The sigh of a man bracing himself in expectation of something he is imaging will be unpleasant.
"The visual phenomena Mr. Frog emitted measured in at about three Aums per tick, so you were close on that front. However, that was just spill over that his body couldn't properly contain from your investiture so the actual amount would be... Well there are a few variables and the like but based on the energy flow between the two of you I would say you invested him with about..."
A pause as he did some quick calculations in his head.
"Thirteen mox and six mana. Which would work out too roughly one thousand and thirty-six Aums total. There are five classifications for magical density. The smallest is Mu, one hundred Mu make one Aum, ten Aum make one Mana, ten mana make one Mox, and one hundred Mox make a Flux."
With that explained he braced himself for her response. He was not used to natural born sorcerers handling his application of scientific study to magic particularly well. In fact, he usually got ridicule for trying to make an art into a science from those so blessed.

Jun of the Celadine
Dedicated

A man who treated animals with respect, even the dickish ones, was a good sign. "He probably likes you more than he likes me."
Jun blinked and cocked her head as Avalux explained his mana quantification method. She'd never heard anything quite like it before.
Jun wasn't foreign to the concept of having an academic approach to magic. In fact, she considered herself well-read to an extent. But this man was on an entirely different level. Jun could write rune formulas, but there was still an art to them. Runes were very subjective and different cultures used different kinds of runes to help them focus their powers.
But this was more... architect talk.
Jun grinned. "I'm just curious. In my old world, I once held back an angry fae's strikes using a large light construct. It was a rhombus shaped, hollow, but thicker around the edges. I think it was about... maybe 10 meters tall and 8 meters wide? The fae had used some sort of matter expansion spell to make its fists about two dozen meters wide. It was trying to kill a dragon friend of mine that had offended it. It's a long story."
Old Duen would be disappointed in her for reminiscing about the past. But, to hell with it.
She put her hands on her hips. "About how many fluxes of power do you think that spell was?"
She sniffed and felt another drop of blood dribble out of her nose, somewhat ruining her bravado. She quickly wiped it away.

Avalux Kesterven
Dedicated
Roleplay posts: 106
Age: 42
Appearance: Avalux is quarter elven which makes his age slightly hard to guess. His hair had turned a silvery blonde when he was quite young and most of the signs of age on his features are due more to squinting to read in candlelight than his years. He is on the tall and lean side but not to an excessive degree. Perhaps a hair's breadth over six feet and with enough meat on his bones to be healthy. His features are angular and they have a slightly severe cast as his habitual expression is a frown of thoughtful consideration.
-------------------------
Equipment: Utterly insufficient for the task he has been presented with but he has the essential. A fresh notebook, a pen enchanted to replenish its own ink over time, a rune scribes etching tool, his glasses, and various crystals for creating apparatus.
-------------------------
Skills and Abilities: Avalux is a magical engineer (Artificer if you wish to offend) and researcher. He specializes in the creation of devices that use magical power to power mechanical designs. He tackles magic with the scientific method trying to quantify something that most people believe to be unquantifiable. His drive and determination to do so often make him overlook certain things.

There was an easing in Avalux's shoulders as Jun asked her question the man's expression going from surprised to thoughtful as she asks about her previous feat of strength. Honestly, he wasn't sure he was out of the woods in so far as having to deal with potentially spiritually wearying dismissal of his field of study but she was expressing an interest which was more than he was used to receiving.
"Well, as I am sure you can imagine that is a complex question that I don't think I can accurately answer."
In fact, he could not even come close. It was similar to being asked how much weight a person gained after a meal. Well it was possible he would have had to been present to measure each ingrediant used during the meal, gotten a baseline for metabolism, and learned how much excercise was done before and after. In short, so far removed from the event he was estimating at best. However, he figured that was what she was looking for and she almost certainly didn't want to be bored by him explaining the fine details of his scale.
"But based on your description, I would say the spell probably consumed two to three Mox worth of magic per tick. So if you kept the construct up and active long enough you would have expended a Flux worth of mana in around the minute mark."
Most spells could be measured in Mana or Mox since the average available mana pool of a master wizard, based on his studies which had given him a frustratingly low sample size, was just over one Flux total. Most spells were designed to use significantly less than that amount considering spells that did require that much were quite dangerous to handle.
