To have the lack of annoyance that these two women would follow was almost a gift, though the way Huey saw it, this should have been what was expected. Far too much trouble went into getting around this blasted settlement on that particular night. He would not have such treatment any longer.
As Csilla led them, he tutored her on her newly acquired capability. Closing her eyes, going with instinct, that which suddenly became natural to her to go towards him, simply because that's what she wanted now. He was so enamored with directing Csilla that he didn't even realize that his own instincts were calling him; not until the young woman mentioned it. "I have not surrendered myself to the son, but to mother," he replied, eyes greying over as he looked into the distance. His words faded, and his grip became lax within Csilla and Hævys' hands. The mist swept by them in a stiff breeze, and all at once, the bonfire and the crowd that gathered around it were revealed.

Roleplay posts: 22
Appearance: Maribel is a towering, broad-shouldered woman with skin as pale as polished ivory. Though she has a square jaw and sharp, piercing features, there is a way about her movements that retains a soft, delicate manner.
She has yellow eyes like a cat's with impressively large pupils, becoming pitch black in the absence of light or when she spots something particularly fascinating. Her hair is predominantly white with a few strands of black beneath the layers, similar to how hair changes as humans age.
_______________________________________________________
Equipment: A bladed whip is the last surviving weapon in Maribel's repertoire after the great flood. Other than that, she has the crystal ball, which is little more than a toy now in the mists.
_______________________________________________________
Skills and Abilities: Transformation:
Maribel's vampiric curse can allow her to change her form into several distinct shapes: a shaggy black dog, a humanoid bat creature, and an oily snake, none of which are smaller than Maribel's human form.
Her senses and natural strength are heightened considerably at night and gutter just as significantly during the day. She has excellent night vision that causes her to be blinded completely in the presence of the sun. If in direct contact with sunlight, she burns.
The Correa family's shared ability is that which to create loyal thralls without having to sire them into vampires. Thralls are created with a bite, and sired vampires are created with a bite that doesn't kill the victim, and then feeding the victim the vampire's blood. Thralls share a portion of the vampire's strength and can still walk freely in the sun, though with a newly found disdain for it.

What a mess.
That was the first thought Maribel had as she walked through the camp, surrounded by those consumed by desperation. When they bumped into her, she would grasp them by the shoulders, look into their eyes, and witness the abject terror within them. It was rare to witness that expression without being the cause of it. Funny, she thought she even saw relief flash in their eyes for a moment.
"... y-you're not the Reverend!" one stuttered. He was a thin man, built like a young willow tree; all limbs stretched out with no substance. Maribel raised her brows, not in curiosity or surprise, but in a way that softened her expression and reflected her pity.
"Why, no. I can't say I am," she replied. Before he could answer, she held up a finger to shush him, saying "What's happening here?"
"People are getting swallowed! Swallowed by the mist, like before! Run, run away, before it gets you too!"
The vampiress tilted her head to the side, then looked around. The breeze was already parting the heavy fog. She took a moment to think, knuckle up to her lips, then hummed. "No," she told the man, "It will not swallow me, nor will it take anyone else. What is your name, dear? Tell me."
Stunned, either by her words or that he survived the ravenous evening, the man mumbled, "Gunter."
With a delicate smile, the woman put a hand on his head. "Gunter. My name is Maribel Correa. I'm here to help. Spread the word, will you?"
Silently, Gunter nodded his head.
"Good boy."
___________________________
This became a popular event as the vampiress strode into the middle of the encampment. If the survivors weren't looking out for themselves, they were looking for their children or loved ones. Even more often than that, she heard them call out for their leaders. It became apparent all too soon that these people were long gone. With such a whir of events, Maribel had nothing set in stone, but a plan was beginning to formulate inside of her head. In years past, they procured many lands through threats and manipulation, sheer force, court politics... but now, it felt as though the new world felt like handing one over to them. With their leaders gone and people desperate, what was there to stop her? No, this was just too easy.
There was the matter of this mist to figure out, but for now, it was retreating, and that suited the matron fine. She would deal with it another time when it became relevant. The present was giving way for a speech, as people were gathering around as she hoisted herself atop a rocky stool. She was already taller than many of the humans here, but she needed everyone to see her. People squabbled a moment, unsure of what was happening and who she was. Maribel waited for them to silence themselves before speaking.
"A tragedy has struck," she began, looking them over one by one, lost eyes preying upon her. "A foul thing, this mist. It has already taken so much. Now, you don't even have your leaders to guide you."
The crowd started with their worried chatter again. This time, Maribel did not wait. She held up a hand and boomed, "I am Maribel Correa. You do not know me, but I am a saint in my home: a thaumaturgist. It seems your Reverend was not prepared for this wretched plague to overcome you, but this mist cowers at my feet." Gesturing outward, she presented to them the clearing air. "My only regret... is not being able to make it any sooner. You have my deepest apologies." Her eyes cast down, hands clinging to her cloak. "But I will do what I can to help if you'll have me. I hear you took in my children while I was lost, and for that, I am in your debt. Allow me to do the same for you."
More whispering. More bickering. Then, "How can we trust you? Why do you wear the Reverend's robes!?"
Looking down, the vampiress patted her new robes. Her lips formed into a silent, curious, "Oh."
There was a grunt. The air was tense.
"I will not force any one of you to believe me, as these times are difficult. My son procured these robes." Her smile tightened, feigning discomfort. "This is clearly inappropriate. I will change, but... I have nothing of my own. Allow me to follow my children to camp, at least. That is where I will be if you wish to seek me out."
When she stepped down, the crowd parted around her. None reached out, not yet. How could she expect them to? It was too soon... but that's exactly how a good poison worked. Slowly. Gently. That was how corruption took a populace.

Vasco ripped through the crowd as swiftly and quietly as he possibly could. He wasn't sure how long his mother's speech would be, but he did know that she would seek him out when it was over. It was imperative that he find Csilla in that time, hopefully avoiding Huey all the while. Now that the mist was gone, he could feel his connection to Csilla strengthening. She was the only thrall under his belt- metaphorically for now- and that made it easier to pinpoint where she was. In fact, she wasn't far away at all! She was just...
The vampire's heels skidded in the dirt, body arching over Huey, mere inches away from bowling into the child. He didn't seem to mind this time, as his eyes were focused, expression melted into comfortable emptiness. Any worries he had, the anxiety that was growing every day he couldn't find mother, was now gone. Vasco waved a hand in front of the child's face several times before huffing, satisfied. He took no time looking to Csilla with a smile, hands reaching for hers.
"Csilla! Lovely one. You look so much better compared to the last time I saw you. Are you feeling better? I bet you are. Unfortunately, we have a problem. My mother is visiting." He paused, looking to the right, paying attention to Hævys for the first time. "I'm sorry, who are you?"

Roleplay posts: 61
Age: Nearing her mid-30s
Appearance: She has a dark brown, bordering on black head of hair, kept short, not reaching halfway down her neck. Her skin is a darker tan-ish shade, with grey eyes. Standing around 5'10", she has a rugged frame, used to heavy labor and working in the forge. She usually wears a pair of loose fitting pants, with a snug cloth wrap covering up her chest. While in the forge, she wears a black smith's apron as well. While her pants usually covers it, there is a large indent into her skin on her thigh, as if part of the skin had been sheared off of that area, a few layers deep.
Equipment: While a smith before she got here, most of her equipment couldn't be carried during the flood. She's lucky she got out with a few forging hammers and a pair of tongs for handling hot metal, as well as her trusty pata(a type of sword-gauntlet), for if someone attempts to cross her or steal her wares.
Skills and Abilities: A skilled blacksmith, focusing on weapons and armor, with some skill also with jewelry and building materials such as hinges or nails. As well as this, she is skilled in the magics of enchanting her wares while creating them, giving enchantments of durability, of good health, or other small enchantments to make using them easier. However, she could only do this for things she was forging, not finished works, and even then she currently refuses to enchant her works. As well as this, although she currently refuses to do it as well, she can give people permanent marks on their skin, that would not wash off no matter what, and even enchant those.
Biography: A skilled smith from a young age, Hævys loved to create. She would work with her father in his forge, learning his craft, even if many others said she couldn't, or that she shouldn't and she should be proper. Naturally, Hævys wanted to prove them wrong. After learning all she could from her father, she travelled her land, looking for the best smiths to teach her what her father could not. Eventually she'd stumble on a smith who taught her many other talents, including, most importantly, the art of enchanted forging. Upon returning home and beginning her own work, she was soon summoned to the capital, to work towards making equipment for the army. Here, she would gain the epithet of Magesmith.
As well as working for the army, she would open a small business on the side, giving people permanent marks on their skin in any design they chose, a skill she picked up on her travels. However, one day she would experiment(with a willing participant) on attempting to enchant her marks. It was a success, and word soon reached the king. Immediately, she was given a new position with the prison. She would use her marking ability to give prisoners permanent enchanted marks, ones that would seal any magical ability they possessed, as well as teaching others to do the same.
However, soon, it became apparent that many of these prisoners did not deserve their punishment, nor prison time at all. Many people were sentenced to this not only for crimes, but for things outside of their control and for speaking out against the war. Hævys could not take this, speaking out against it. As a result, she was branded a criminal and given one of the marks she taught others to make, sealing her magic as she was thrown in prison.
Eventually, she would escape, and cut the mark off of her body, barely surviving with the bloodloss and possible infection. Even though she was no longer sealed, she refused to make another mark for anybody, and refused to enchant anything anymore. She refused her old epithet and became simply Hævys Bladesmith, and opening a small, struggling smithy for a short time, before the flood hit.

The longer Hævys spend around these individuals, the more uneasy they made her. Obviously there was some magical connection between them, but to her that was such an unorthodox thing. She had heard of people magically linked to artifacts, but to other people? She was wary of what the nature of this connection was, a suspicion only further deepened by what happened as they approached Huey’s family.
Upon feeling Huey’s hand slip, her first instinct is to grab back at it in fear of losing the child, even as the mist started to recede. However, when she looked to him to see if he was alright, she saw his eyes. They were blank, staring with an unnatural emptiness. He almost looked soulless at that moment, like it was taken away with his words as they moved closer to the crowd she could now start to see. She shudders, letting go of his hand softly and letting it drop. Something told her that this connection to his mother was far from an equal one, even if he seemed not to notice.
The blacksmith looked up towards the one this crowd had congregated around. From here she could not make out what the woman said, but her imposing stature definitely left an impression. However, Hævys’ musings about her are cut short when this pale, thin man ran up to them.
As he spoke and moved, it seemed he at first did not notice her, focusing instead on the other two. From what he said and how he spoke he seemed to be the Vasco individual they were speaking of earlier. Her eyes drift back to Huey. He didn’t even respond! Not to the hand in his face, nor did he make so much as a sound while Vasco talked to Csilla, and then to her.
Hævys raised an eyebrow as her eyes narrowed slightly, taking in the man. “Hævys Bladesmith.” She answered curtly. She points with her head to the two she travelled here with. “They spoke of a Vazcó. Assume that's you?”

Csilla had followed the guidance of the child, against adult judgements that there was no way a child should know better than an adult in this situation. Yet, he was right. The more she trusted her instincts, the more the anxious knots in her stomach turned into the fluttering of butterflies. She hadn't seen him since he'd visited, but at least she knew he hadn't just been a dream that night.
Huey felt.. like her but different, and when he shared his true goal it made some sense. When Huey's eyes glazed over expressionlessly, at first Csilla furrowed her brow but she only looked on, and there was something in his gaze that she understood. She understood, because she also heard the call her heart longed for, she just didn't see him yet. The child's grip loosened, but she didn't let go just yet. It was understandable, and reasonable in his state. They stopped walking when suddenly, out of the mist, her guardian angel himself appeared with a start. Her heart leaped, despite how ungraceful his reveal was. He checked the state of his little brother who, naturally had no care in the world.
The world may as well have disappeared for her too as the vampire addressed her. He held her hands and she smiled with relief in her eyes, relief that he was safe and whole. Unfortunately, jubilation would have to wait as there was an evident rush in his words. Could they just not savor the moment? His Mother? While initially she looked as if under some kind of charm while Vasco addressed her, the mention of his mother seemed to snap her right out of it. "I'm- Sorry??" She asked a bit incredulously.
His anxiety about this alarmed her. As Heavys introduced herself Csilla had been trying to think on a way to make the man feel better about this situation that so obviously distressed him. "Ah, I'm the one who troubled Heavys to accompany us. I'm starting to feel better but I'm still not very strong yet, so I thought it was better to have more help to find you. She's the one who found your little brother. Perhaps she can come with us to meet your mother?"

Vasco wagged his eyebrows with a smirk. "Oh, I see I'm already being talked about. Not very surprising, I tend to get popular if I stay in one place too long." He said this with all manner of feigned bashfulness that had every bit of meaningful intent behind it. Pausing for a moment, he took the chance to look Hævys over but didn't let his eyes linger too long. Csilla was right there, after all!
"Ah, yes. I thank you for taking care of her, but we very much should be- wait, brother?" Vasco paused, then looked down at the runt butler. "Oh. Nononono, you see, meeting my mother is exactly wha-"

"- you should be doing."
A heavy, commanding voice cut through Vasco's words. He knew it even without turning around. The vampire's body tensed, eyes closed, before turning around on his heel to face her. "Of course, mother. Of course. This is Csilla... and Hævys, as it seems. I just met the latter."
Before them stood the broad-shouldered, older woman who'd been standing above the crowd, which started to disperse behind her. A fountain of white hair fell around her shoulders, down to her waist. The heavy robes adorning her body were that of the man Csilla knew since childhood. Slowly and deliberately, she walked toward the group. Before reaching them, she took a knee and held a hand out, looking towards the child.
Huey, expression still, ran towards her and buried himself in her arms. Her smile was motherly and warm, but... but there was something else in there; something not so comforting and kind. It was in her confidence and calmness.
Lifting him up, the woman addressed them at last, giving them a little curtsey. "A pleasure. I am Maribel, Matriarch of House Correa. You may refer to me as Lady Maribel, as I believe Marquis is a title lost to us all." There was a bit of bitter humor in her tone in the end. "I see you were spending time with my little Huey. Did you take good care of him? What wonderful ladies you are. Perhaps I owe you a favor. I will be spending time in my tent. Would you join me?"
It didn't sound like a question.

If Vasco’s reaction to his brother’s state wasn’t enough to make Hævys’ first impression of him slightly sour, what she saw of his ego surely was. That, however, didn’t matter all too much. She had some questions for this man. She opens her mouth to speak her mind to him, to finally get some answers as to what in blazes was going on here.
Then, the imposing woman’s voice cut off her son, as well as Hævys’ thought process. She examined the woman, watching her stride through the crowd towards them. She had this air around her, like one who thought themselves born to lead. To be obeyed. An air that was only enhanced by the cold smile as her emotionless son raced into her embrace. So much about this woman, about her demeanor, it all just seemed so…chilling.
Hævys didn’t trust her.
She listened to Maribel as she spoke, trying to gauge what her intentions may be. Why did she wish to meet with her? Csilla she could at least understand, as it seemed Vasco had quite the vested interest in her, for better or for worse. Perhaps the blacksmith just found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time once again. She wanted to refuse the offer, she wanted to run off and get away from this wretched place. However, she knew that even if she could still run, it’s unlikely she would make it very far, and a simple “no thank you” would do little here. So, for now, she had to go along. At the very least, if she played it safe she may get some of her questions at least partially answered.
Hævys took an uneven step forwards, nodding in greeting. “S’my pleasure, Miss Máribel. The boy didn’t cause trouble.” She tells her, trying not to let her wariness of the situation drip into her tone. “It’d be’n honor.”

Csilla linked as at first it seemed like Vasco was about to tell her they were trying to avoid his mother, but alas his mother wasn't about to let him off the hook. The modest brunette felt the butterflies in her stomach turn to ice as there was something threatening in the air of this woman. She looked to the side at Heavys almost as if she were apologetic that the blacksmith was now entangled in this.
"Huey was nothing but polite." Csilla acknowledged as a reassurance to the matriarch. "I'd be delighted." she replied to the invitation into her tent, and paired the acceptance with a small curtsy, something her father had enough sense to teach her for whenever they dealt with higher class clientele. The Forgotten title of Marquis was the tip off, and there was a sense that she should be extra respectful in this instance.
Her eyes glanced over to Vasco as if waiting for instructions, advice, reassurance, anything to guide her as she followed Maribel to the proper location. The fact he was at least there filled her with a sense of calm in the storm, a sense of safety, a warm numbness like the medicines she'd been drinking up to less than a few days ago. Looking at him she could feel herself give into the fog that clouded her best judgement. It was like an escape out of the uncomfortably awkward situation they were now in.

Appearance: Thin and lithe, Vasco is his mother's antithesis, taking only her broad shoulders as his own. His narrow, diamond-shaped face and long features can be seen as striking, if not handsome, by many.
He has a head of immaculately trimmed, dirty blonde hair and it is clear he takes great care of it, trimming and oiling and all the works.
_______________________________________________________
Equipment: Vasco's preferred weapon of choice is a special rapier that houses a thin, hollow chamber typically filled with a neurotoxin found back in their homeland. The chamber can also be filled with other substances.
________________________________________________________
Skills and Abilities: Vasco's vampiric curse can allow him to change her form into several distinct shapes: a shaggy black dog, a blackbird, and an eel.
His senses and natural strength are heightened considerably at night and gutter just as significantly during the day. He has excellent night vision that causes him to be blinded completely in the presence of the sun. Despite this, he does not burn in direct sunlight.
The Correa family's shared ability is that which to create loyal thralls without having to sire them into vampires. Thralls are created with a bite and a magical sigil. Sired vampires are created with a bite from the vampire, and then the ingestion of the vampire's blood. Thralls share a portion of the vampire's strength and can still walk freely in the sun, though with a newfound disdain for it. They are not vampires themselves but have a substantial, artificial fondness for them.

It would have been a miracle if anyone else had caught it. That, or a very sharp eye.
Vasco did, and only because he'd known Maribel all his life. He knew her little habits, the things she did while she tried to keep her emotions hidden. This time, it was the smallest hesitation in her step when Hævys said "Miss." He didn't know why he did it, as he acted before he thought, but he stepped between them to chirp, "That won't happen again. She didn't mean it."
He surprised himself. Was it years of defending his mistresses that urged him into action? It must have been. Hævys wasn't quite his type, but she made a rather common mistake, and she was affiliated with his type.
Yes, that's what he told himself.
Swiftly, he turned around, pointing a finger at the blacksmith with stern eyes. He mouthed "Lady" at her silently before spinning on his heel, beckoning for Csilla to follow him by his arm.

Csilla pinched her skirt, lifting it ever so slightly as she gave the matriarch a parting curtsy. She was promptly led away by Vasco, whom gestured to both women to keep silent. The seamstress paused for a moment only long enough to glance pver her shoulder where the curtain now blocked the view of Maribel. As asked, she didn't break the tense silence that shrouded their group uncomfortably. If there was one saving grace is that she was pretty sure most of her tastebuds had burned off as she no longer tasted the tang of iron. Or anything else for that matter.
For him she remained quiet, at least until she could see the tents from her and Haevys' camp: Pannoa.
"Vasco, What in all of the heavens is the matter?" She finally dared to ask. "I know things are moving a... Little fast, but is it really worth the worry?"

Hævys followed the pair away from the matriarch’s tent, staying similarly silent as she stewed in her thoughts. All of it, from the children, to Vasco himself, especially to the mother of the house, it all raised so many questions. What were they? The longer she stayed around them the less they seemed quite…human. What did they do to those children? It seemed quite obvious to her that something about them wasn’t natural. What did they want? So many questions, building on top of one another. As they began to approach the tents of what they knew as Pannoa, Hævys decided she had enough questions.
She wanted answers.
Upon hearing Csilla speak, Hævys took the chance to also break the tense silence. “”Mom’s a real delight, prettyboy.” She said, turning to Vasco with her voice dripping in sarcasm. “Gotta say though, has an odd taste in drink. What’s she season’r tea with? 'Cuz it tasted-” She let out a tense, slightly frustrated laugh. “Tasted like blood. And’r kids! All seem so well behaved. Tell me, how’d they do that thing with their eyes?” She stared daggers at the man. “Y’all just seem so…interesting. Raises a lot of questions.”

Vasco really didn't know what to tell Csilla. It was so sudden. Usually, he created thralls on trips far away from his mother when she sent him on quests to lands far beyond the horizon. This way, he was able to ease them into the intensity of his family, teach them a few manners, hope that they were up to mother's standards before she moved in. Recently, before the flood, he didn't even have them come home at all. It was all for naught, it seemed, what with the end of the world and all.
Oh, but this was so much worse! Now he even had to deal with this infernal smithy being pissy and questioning him! Why did he have to answer her? Why did he even go through so much effort to help her case?
In an attempt to get his thoughts together, he briefly ignored Hævys to answer Csilla first. "Well, you see, mother is very particular, and she doesn't like sharing, and that's going to be a lot to explain-" He spun on his heel, facing the strapping woman with a glare. "And I really don't think I deserve all the sass coming from you, who I don't even know!"
Suddenly, out of nowhere, he paused and stared into the woods. One of the pale children was behind a tent, barely visible. He picked up a stray rock from the ground and chucked it at them, sending the thrall running away with a squeal of laughter. "OUT! GET OUT OF HERE!" he cried, pointing towards the Coterie.
The man pinched the bridge of his nose and faced the sky, taking a sigh of frustration to steady himself. A second passed before he gave Hævys his attention again. In fact, he took a step back to face them both.
"We're not like other people. That much is clear, yeah? You know drinking blood is part of the Pannoan culture too. Nothing wrong with partaking if you're not being judgemental." He put out an accusatory finger toward Hævys, expecting her to try and interrupt her. "And my mother likes to adopt sick children! And she saves them. It just so happens that doing that comes at a little price. Or would you rather see them shriveled up with disease and hunger?"
Gods, why was he defending his mother? He understood where the smith was coming from! He hated Maribel almost as much as Laszlo did!
"So, you know, I think you should calm down and get a feel for what's really happening here because she's willing to give you a chance even though you called her a whore! Count your blessings, fool!"
He stormed off, then, reaching for Csilla's hand.

“We ain’t done here!” Hævys hobbled after him as he started to walk away, letting out a frustrated growl. “‘Cuz what’s really happening here? Half the town disappears and your mom walks in like she has free reign to take over, that’s what’s really happening!” She points towards him forcefully, as if throwing her finger in his direction. “So how about instead of saying I said things that I didn’t, you start actually answering some questions, stuck up snob. What kind of different? What price?” She threw her hands up. “An’ where in the gods’ names did you get the idea I called her that?”
Her mind raced as her blood began to boil. Who did this prissy little noble boy think he was?! ‘Count her blessings?’ She had to claw for every chance she got, there were no blessings to count, especially not from these people. And obviously they weren’t like other people, they had an army of half-hypnotized children and drank blood! It was her leg she couldn’t use, not her eyes, and yet he answered her question as if she were blind. This man pushed more of her buttons than the blacksmith thought possible for one man, and she didn't know how much more she could put up with as she kept after him.

Csilla had been following right besides Vasco but paused once he'd turned on his heel to address the Smith who was now drilling him with questions. What he'd said about his mother was vague but already sounded like it would be a challenge to keep her happy. That meant the clothes she'd make for her would have to be done meticulously and with as much love in every stitch as she could for his sake.
Why was she thinking of love for a man she'd only met and spoken with for an hour. The realization seemed to pull her out of a fog she felt under, just in time for the irate vampire to yell at once of his siblings, something that startled her slightly, obviously by the sudden slight tense in her shoulders.
It wasn't helped by Vasco's heated defense of his family, but everything he said sounded reasonable. She was living proof that what he said was true. Vasco quite easily grabbed hold of her hand, and she didn't resist him as her pulled her along with him. The Smith hadn't been ready to let the battle end however.
"Haevys, I know things are stressful right now but if we start jumping to conclusions we'll just cause divide among ourselves. Vasco is right, Pannoa also has many rituals where we consume blood out of reverence, even if that was the case. I noticed they used an iron kettle, and in the past I've found iron kettles impart a taste. The tea was red from the flower petals, neither of these things are crimes. Their children are well behaved, if only a bit unsettling, they just have a different culture." The seamstress began defending the vampire and she could feel that fog start settling in again. "He saved my life. I don't think he's a bad man, give him a chance on my account."
The fog that was starting to settle wasn't the warm fog from earlier, but felt no less familiar. For a moment her vision swam as the stress from the day took its unexpected toll. While she'd been far healthier than the days prior, she still felt weakness. She gripped Vasco's hand tighter while her fingertips pressed against the side of her head in a vain attempt to stave off the weakness until they got to her tent.
